Jaffa Cakes are not biscuits, they are cakes as, for example, in the name Jaffa Cakes, which was proven in 1991 when HMCE took McVitie"s to court to prove that they were biscuits, which they weren"t. It is precisely because they are cakes, and not biscuits, that there is no VAT on Jaffa Cakes.

I"m sorry Bainn, but Ginger Nuts are at the bottom of my biscuit list. It is only the existence of Crunchies that is keeping them off the bottom off my whole confectionery/biscuit/other-stuff-like-that list. Apart from not tasting very nice, they are rock hard and have to be dunked in your coffee to make them edible, with potentially disastrous results. If I"m going to do that, there are many other biscuits I"d rather use anyway. You did ask.

In answer to point 1 of your post, it is simply my deep understanding of human nature and my ability to sense that this forums users want this debate aired again that has allowed me to steer the topic in the right direction.

Yesterday they were having Royal stuff in work for the Jubilee. Everyone had to wear red, white or blue to work and there were quizzes and food and stuff. I entered the Jubilee poetry competition but the results haven"t been announced, so I have to sweat until Wednesday to find out whether I won.
I wrote it in good faith but, reading it back, it seems very familiar and I am a bit concerned that I may have read it (or something very similar) in the past and thought I was writing something new. If anyone has evidence that I have unwittingly plagiarised a greater poet, I would be glad to know before accepting a prize.
This is the poem:
Tea With The Queen I went to London to visit the Queen But she wasn't in so I went to the cinema instead. When I got home I had some tea and sandwiches in her honour, And a piece of cake.

I"ve been meaning to resurrect this thread for a while, but there never seemed to be something newsworthy to kick it off. What could be more newsworthy than the Olympics, though? I went to see The Flame on Sunday evening, which seemed fairly dull to me, but most others seemed pleased with it.
Today I popped onto the ticket site a few times. It"s really annoying, in that it tells you that tickets are available, but when you try to buy them they"re not, even though the first page still says that they are. Various events that are sold out show up again from time to time, though, and I got tickets for the men"s football final (though it doesn"t say who Brazil will be playing), women"s volleyball semi and a basketball double-header China v Brazil and Lithuania v the Dream Team. Just need the 100m final to come available now. More realistically, I"d quite like to go to the women"s boxing finals.

I don"t really play computer games these days, so I"m not sure I can answer your question. I definitely haven"t played the one you mention, though I used to be pretty nifty at Asteroids and a crack-shot at Breakout. Call of Duty sounds quite militaristic to me, so I wouldn"t recommend drinking at the same time. Funnily enough, I had my front room carpet cleaned yesterday. I was going to replace it as it was badly marked, but cleaning seems to have done the trick. £95 (including a large rug) rather than maybe £500 to replace. I can give you the contact details if you want to bring your carpet with you the next time you"re visiting Portsmouth.
When I was married, my ex-wife once somehow made an iron-burn on the front-room carpet, just like they do in the movies. We told the insurance people and their assessor told us that it was a Wilton or Axminster or something, which we didn"t know cos it came with the house. They valued it at £600 and sent us a cheque pronto, when we only thought we would get about £200. We didn"t really feel like throwing it out once we knew it was a decent one, so we transferred it upstairs to the main bedroom, which was over the front-room and the same size. We needed to change the carpet there anyway and the mark went under a wardrobe. I suggest you try a similar strategy. Otherwise, buy a rug.

I see you are a man of few words. I feel that you have something you wish to express but perhaps you are shy about other people knowing how you feel. Sometimes it is better not to be the strong silent type. As a way of getting things off your chest, I suggest that you start keeping a diary. That way, you can let out all the feelings that are inside you without worrying that anyone else is going to read it.

Thank you for your question. It is true that I once (and only once) folded QQ pre-flop in an APAT event. I have folded QQ pre-flop 4 times in live tournaments that I can remember, once incorrectly. I wish I had folded it a few more times. In the hand in question, I had raised UTG and another player reraised. My initial reaction was not to fold, but the reason I did so was not because he had reraised, but the size of his bet. It was not huge in relation to my raise, but it was substantial in proportion to his stack and I concluded that his bet was sized with a view to getting the stacks in by the end and, therefore, that he was already holding a bigger pair than mine. Unfortunately for this player, he could have gained more chips but he gave away his hand strength by his bet size and the ants in his pants. As a result of this bullet-dodging fold, I went on to make the final table of that tournament while the other player didn"t. I remember this player well, mainly because of his unusual accent - a strange cross between Scotland and Leeds. Someone told me that he been Captain of both, though I didn"t believe it. Having witnessed the whole sorry incident, I find it worrying that you are concerned that it might be repeated. I would suggest that you refrain from such engagements until you are confident that you can pass the entire weekend without getting anything stuck between your legs. Otherwise you may find that gentlemen callers call less frequently in future.

I"m so pleased this avenue is available for me to asked you advice and opinion to tackle an issue that keeps cropping up whilst i"m with my APAT colleagues.
Being a reasonable shy person I never feel comfy correcting people when they are mis-pronouncing my username.
Waz1892 was created from a shortening of my name Warren and the birth year of my football team. My non Apat friends throughout my life have always pronounced it Woz. The prouncement in lower case of "w-a-z" had never been an "issue" before APAT. It was even read as Waz on sky tv by the legend that is tikay, even then I emailed in and said it was Woz, and he told to me to spell it correctly! ( I forgive him as he continued to say can"t spell but played that hand very well!)
Your advice please and I"m hoping the millions of loyal followers you have the word will spread

Is that all you wished to know or would you like a critique? I"m not sure I would advertise on the Interweb that I call pre-flop all-ins with Q6. If you can make the call, you then have to win the hand, which is not guaranteed. I have checked the Hendon Mob odds calculator and 83 is a 78.3% favourite against Q6, so I think you were lucky. Congrats anyway on using my chips to secure your 6/12 finish.

It must be horrible when people get your name wrong. I have to say it"s not something I have experienced myself, seeing as how every Tom, Dick & Harry is called John, but I can sympathize with your predicament. Someone who did have a similar problem was Lisa Minnelli. Perhaps you could deal with it by singing the correct version:
Anyway, wouldn"t an abbreviation of your name would be War, not Waz. You clearly don"t know how to spell your own name (as has been pointed out before), so I wouldn"t try anything tricky, like cycling or hairdressing. At this stage, you are probably stuck with the one you have assumed, so perhaps you should advise your APAT cohorts to pronounce it in lower case, as you report that this has worked successfully for you in the past.

Obviously, without really knowing my standard of play it would be unfair for you to comment so here"s a brief heads up of my golfing history:
I"ve only ever played proper golf twice, but have played pitch and putt a few times, and played crazy golf quite a bit.... However, the most important piece of knowledge you may find helpful is that I used to own a pair of golf socks, and did get a hole in one!

The company I"m working at passing through is taking the Olympics seriously. The best thing is that every day is dress-down day for the duration. Each Department drew a country which we are supposed to support and has been given full-size flags and decorations for their office. There will be various competitions during the Games - table-football, hula-hoop, jenga and can"t remember the rest. Tomorrow each Department is having a meal with food from their country. That might be good if we drew some Caribbean, South American, Asian or African country or even most European. As we drew New Zealand, I guess we"ll just be having the same as every other day.

I was watching the Damon Hill lookalike on my left at the ECOAP last weekend, and he seemed to have a desire to lean back and balance chips on his forehead, but clearly got it very wrong. Idiot! Just played a satellite for the WCOOP $200 + $15 Triple Stud tomorrow night. 63 players - 3 seats, with a bit of cash for 4th.
I was playing some other games at the same time on two sites and didn"t notice either of two quite important things; namely that a) we were on the final table and b) I was chip-leader. I just carried on playing as normal as if there were lots of players still in, which I thought there were. I would have slowed down and probably eased into one of the seats if I had been paying enough attention. Triple Stud (and it"s individual elements) and 2-7 are my main things online these days. Rarely play Holdem or Omaha online now unless there is a particular reason, though I do play NLHE live several nights a week. Anyway, I didn"t slow down, got involved in a couple of dodgy situations and went out. Stupid iriot, as Benny Hill used to say.
I"ll have another go at satelliting in. This is the main tournament I want to play, so I might buy in anyway if it comes to it. Might even look for staking.

I"m in - had to go up to the $8R sat. Had a dream FT - almost didn"t want it to end. 2 seats, $55 for next 3 and $45 for 6th. It was the classic situation where I had the lead with about 25k, a few were on 12-16k and a couple had 6-8k and none of them wanted to risk getting knocked out without cashing. I was able to complete every hand and get to 35k without anyone playing back. Once we were in the cash, they should have been able to play freely, but they were all still mainly concerned with not getting knocked out rather than fighting for the other seat. By the time we were 5-handed, I had over 50k and they were all hanging in. The payout structure just gave a huge advantage to whoever hit the FT in the lead. It"s not often that games go so well.
Rob - I"ve got a seat now but, seeing as how you were willing to support me, you can still have the % if you want it. Not sure about the procedure now cos I didn"t get as far as putting up a staking thread. Maybe I should still do that. Or alternatively can arrange it off-piste if you are still interested in going ahead.

Fraid not - the dream is over. I quickly went from 5k to 2k. Then spent over two hours scrabbling to get back to starting stack. By the last break I had finally found some traction and got up to just under 10k, just outside the top 100 of 400 survivors from 640 starters. I spent the break congratulating myself that I had twice as many chips as KidPoker, GeorgeDanzer, M.Staszko, CharismA3, Donald & j.thaddeus.
The game resumed; bish bash bosh and there I was - out before any of them. Got into some big hands that meant glory or bust. It wasn"t glory. Finished about 320th, almost exactly in the middle, but the position didn"t matter compared to giving myself a chance to take the opportunities that came. Didn"t work out - back to the day job.

Yeah Baby! I just won an $11R satellite into WCOOP-49 Razz $500+$30. Second got $500, so once we were HU we had banked $1,000 between us and were playing for $30! Third got nothing, which was pretty harsh.
Anyway, the point of this post is that I don"t know what to do now - play it or cash out as tournament $? I wouldn"t ever pay $500 to enter a poker tournament, but isn"t playing it the same as paying to enter? On the other hand, I did just win a 37-runner Razz tournament and have won a few before and I could think of it as a freeroll. It"s not a freeroll though, cos effectively I have $530 that I can bank or invest. On the other other hand, I could win a few thousand or more than a few. Or I could lose it all.
I"d be grateful for advice from anyone who has been down this road before (or anyone who hasn"t). It"s not until the 18th, so I have time to think about it.
In the meantime, I need to go wheeeeee!

As you say, you"d never pay to enter a $500 tournament, so why not treat youself and have a crack at it.
You maybe be in a position to achieve a very nice result if you play - Nothing ventured and all that. Assuming you entered the sat in the first place to get into the tournament in the first place, why stop now?
By banking the $500 you"ll never know what you could have done, and assuming you balance isn"t zero, you have your bankroll to do as you wish anyway.

What was your plan when you entered the sat? Being a top poker player you had a plan right?
Another option would be to take the T$ and sell them at around 85-90% or whatever the going rate is these days on those sites that trade T$. Dull, but money in the back pocket.

They exist, they are basically the same as real money (assuming you were going to play tournaments on there anyway) and you will make more than the $530 by playing them. The razz event may well be soft, I would not know, but it sounds like to big of a shot (depending on your bank roll, I don"t know what that is).

- Play the game for full value, as Waz & Steve said - Play it and sell half, as Wayne & Adam said - Bank it and use it to play a number of events, as Andrew, Carl & Rodders said - Sell the T$ at 80-90% value, as Andrew also said
Thanks for the input - it has helped to clarify things for me. I"ve now got more options than I thought I had to start with. It would have been simpler if I came second and got paid in real withdrawable beer tokens instead of this, cos I wouldn"t have considered buying in.
One thing I know is, I ain"t selling them at a discount. I think I"ll go the staking route, if I can find anyone who wants to come along. This is kind of a combination of all the options, as I get to play with the grown-ups and to find out whether my star would have soared in this event and I still have a possibility of a good payout, albeit a percentage of what I might have won, though with less concentrated risk, but I also get to spread my buy-ins over more than one tournament.
I might test the water to see if I can sell part of the Razz, say 60%, which would use $200. There are a few $300 + $20 tournaments I would like to play, ie Stud, Badugi, 2-7, so if the Razz sells, I might spread the rest across those and try to sell the balance (or 50% if that is too much).

You may have heard the expression "Old accountants never die - they just lose their balance". Well, I earn my keep in the accounting trade and I have clearly lost mine, as the waterfall of chips demonstrated.
I used to have no problem balancing untold quantities of chips, as you can see below, but that was before the old-timers disease kicked in.
Chip-balancing is a skill developed by experience. If you wish to develop this skill for yourself, I suggest that you try to go deeper in tournaments in the future than has been your usual practice. That way, you can build a large stack of chips, which you can then practice balancing.

That is one which I would definitely have unregistered from. I"m not as strong at Omaha as at HE, though better at PLO8 than PLO. I was surprised to get that far from 94, but the truth is that there was a lot of luck involved - maybe the turbo dilution of skill was to my advantage. Several times I just had to hope for the best, though the turbo nature of the game forced uncomfortable options to be taken. A couple of times I wasn"t in good shape but the split saved me. I would feel uncomfortable investing $530 in any Omaha tournament, though, so I would have banked the $, whereas I do feel comfortable going for it at Razz. I"m probably not much better at Razz than Holdem, but the fields are definitely much weaker, which amounts to much the same thing.

I"m sorry that your question was overlooked. I"ve been a little distracted lately, what with one thing and another. You know how it is - you mean to attend to something but then something else comes up and the first thing gets left - like your question. I"ve had it at the back of my mind all along but for some reason didn"t bring it to the front. Maybe it"s a motivation thing - we all have a tendency to do the easy thing first instead of the important thing - which is probably why I have neglected you until now.
So.......your question. You bring up a thought-provoking subject, the complicated milieu of males and females living in the same space, complicated further by the adult-child and adult-teenager scenarios, with their repeating patterns that will drive you crazy and make you happy at the same time. You are provider, protector and teacher, whilst you are also policeman, judge and prison guard. For you is this amazing terrible fantastic experience and you should soak it up while it happening. At the time, it seems like it will last for ever but, too soon, it is over and is just another collection of your memories.
Anyway, back to your question. Em, there doesn"t appear to be a question. Were you just sharing your living arrangements with us?

I finished in 26th when I turned my queens full of 2s into a bluff on the turn and was called down on 2 streets by queens full of 3s.
I would have played this. Loads of players (myself included) are terrible at this, so I figured I had an even chance :)

I was surprised to get that far from 94, but the truth is that there was a lot of luck involved - maybe the turbo dilution of skill was to my advantage. Several times I just had to hope for the best, though the turbo nature of the game forced uncomfortable options to be taken. A couple of times I wasn"t in good shape but the split saved me. I would feel uncomfortable investing $530 in any Omaha tournament, though, so I would have banked the $, whereas I do feel comfortable going for it at Razz. I"m probably not much better at Razz than Holdem, but the fields are definitely much weaker, which amounts to much the same thing.
I finished in 26th when I turned my queens full of 2s into a bluff on the turn and was called down on 2 streets by queens full of 3s.
I would have played this. Loads of players (myself included) are terrible at this, so I figured I had an even chance :)
FFS, it was you that gave me the idea of unregistering from tournaments in the first place, when you posted about how you satellite into the Sunday Million for fun every week and then unreg for the T$. I didn"t enjoy the randomness of that tournament, even though I nearly scored, though I suppose the final will have a more playable structure.

OK so now you"ve spun up the T$ into another entry. Personally I would play the stud, most of the players out there are terrible at the game and it"s effectively cost you a scratch out of your original Razz roll. There"s much less luck in Stud too and lots of the old school pros believe Stud is the purest form of poker. Seriously go for it, I"ll be on the rail if you do. GL.

I have already unregistered. Doesn"t mean I cant rereg, of course, but I prob won"t. The luck thing is one of the things I like about these limit games. It would take a few bad beats to cause the same devastation to your stack that a single one can have in NLHE. If you"re going well but come unstuck in a hand, you can absorb the hit without it wrecking your whole tournament.
At low buy-ins, it is true that a lot don"t know what they are doing. So you see people misreading their hands, not realising when the game changes (that"s the best one) or calling all the way and folding on seventh. That is much less the case at the higher-cost games. In the Triple-Stud Main last week, I found a very high standard. I don"t just mean that they weren"t doing the dumb stuff, but they were making plays that you never see in the cheap games. I enjoyed that game a lot, but the quality of play was much higher than might be expected.

Agree with Andy (yikes, that"s twice today :) ) - I understand the concept of conservatism and being risk averse to some degree, but as they say about the lottery.... you gotta be in it to win it!! Having won the entry fee for a modest amount in a game where you know you have an edge over at least half the field and probably more, you surely have enough justification for taking a punt.
Come on John - give us something to get excited about (again).

Scraped into the cash, which I have to be happy about considering where I was, but I can"t believe I was knocked out in 44th by that same player vivavsmtv, who again called with 3 spades, the well-connected 28J, and again made the flush. I had a small pair in the hole, with an A showing and might have slowed down if I didn"t pair my A to give me 2P. It wasn"t like he would see the cards cheaply, cos I had doubled up by then and taken the antes twice after that, so had rebuilt to about 12k, I think. It would have served him right if I had filled up. How do players like that end up in a $300 tournament? I think of 3-flush or 3-straight cards on 3rd as trap hands where I could lose a lot and don"t play them unless I can get in cheaply, but all 3 of the critical hands I lost tonight were against players who called large bets on every street with those hands and overtook me by the end. Anyway, my theory about a tournament not being destroyed by one or two hands has been blown out of the water. It still mainly holds, but I guess a crunch time always comes and there"s always someone who will call you behind, and sometimes they"ll get there.
Anyway, we cashed ($543), so you were all right and I was wrong. I was looking forward to saying that I told you I shouldn"t play. I got a few presents early on, notably from Deeb, who probably wasn"t that interested, judging by how he was giving it away. The truth is, though, from my position in mid-game, I should have gone deeper - and would have if some arbitrary play didn"t got there. I can"t cry too much when I"ve just cashed for 500 quid, but you do wonder. 40th place was worth another $130 and so on. I could have been out for zilch though - had to race for my life with JJ against an A about two places off the bubble. Maybe I should have folded, but I thought I might need to win a race just to get to 48th, so may as well take it then.
I don"t want to make this too much of a moan. That"s two I"ve played and I didn"t feel out of my depth at any time; in fact in both I felt I could have gone much deeper if things had just fallen differently. That"s how it goes, I suppose. Might do some more now.

WP last night. You got stiffed the first time the german hit the stupid flush, so you did well to make the $ from there. Not convinced he did much wrong on the flush that knocked you out, but by then we were happy to take the $$.
Think you need a tad more confidence around the bigger buyin games, as I"m sure deep down you know (as we do) that you are more than capable in those games. If the $$$ hurt then sell some action and you will soon find out how much faith people have in you.

I did join Facebook about 3 years ago, due to something to do with Colin O"Prey. Can"t actually remember the reason - I think he just invited me or whatever it"s called. He is still my only friend.
I have had quite a few requests, which I have ignored meant to get around to. Some of them are nearly 3 years old now, including several from APAT members. Sorry for ignoring not getting around to your request. I think I might make a point of blitzing it and catching up with 2005. Maybe I should pass that level and go straight to twitting.

Played on a TV table for the first time last night. One of the local card-rooms, The Phoenix, has had one for months and uses it for all its FTs, but I hadn"t been there for quite a while cos it"s further than the other two venues. You have to put your cards on the readers, and there are two small cameras sticking up from the table at eye-level, recording everything. Pretty nifty. It does all the percentages and tick-marks, etc, just like on the telly. I would tell you that you can see it on YouTube soon but I don"t want you studying my game. £600 for winning it plus £200 from the PLO cash table made it a pretty good night. I might not leave it so long the next time.

Not sure what to do today. I had thought of going to London for the LCI tournament at The Empire, but there"s plenty going on in Portsmouth. The Phoenix has got the first of its monthly satellites for either its £1000 entry game or its WSOP tournament at 3pm, not sure which. I should have been paying attention, but it kinda doesn"t matter which it is. If that goes sideways, there is the £25 FO tonight. Meanwhile Shuffles has the weekly satellite for its £550 tournament at 4pm, with a £20 semi-FO later.
I like going to London, cos it"s London, right? Buzzing. And it"s a bigger tournament, whereas the others will come around every week (yeah, apart from the monthly one). But then there are the costs of getting there and being there and the inconvenience.
Poker is about decisions, but this is a tough one. I wasn"t sure what I would do when I started this, probably going to The Phoenix, but I think I"ve talked myself into going to London. Sometimes it just helps to talk - thanks for listening.

You may be my saviour ( no pressure ).. I"m in (was) one hell of a predicament!! . I"m a easy going kind of guy, always here to help and please family and friends. Then this situation arises.. Am flicking through music channels on sky for my three year old daughter who wants to practise busting some new dance moves, no probs find a channel there she is dancing away having great fun happy days. Then after about twenty mins I look up from pc as I just bust from a tournament, only to my shock and horror that she is dancing to Jedward!!.. Ok I can cope for one song as much as it pains me :"( the song finishes wiiiiii, only to find its a Jedward special of their top 10!! Didn"t realise they had top 10!! So I quickly turn it over, but poor little Ava screams at me " Daddy I want Jedward back on".. Do I "A" do the right thing and keep it on hence appeasing my princess. Or "B" switch it over and watch Reading V Spurs appeasing myself and also keeping the horrors of Jedward away from a very impressionable three year old.. Please help for future Jedward problems yours sincerely fandango Suffolk

Some of you will know that I play from time to time in the LivePubPokerLeague, though a lot less than I used to, and played for them in the last two APAT Forum tournaments. They are probably the most successful of the pub leagues.
Anyway, it"s congratz to Tom Brady, one of the founders of the league, who today made the final table of the IPO in Dublin, to be played in a month"s time. More than made it - he is chip-leader, with 8 left from 1148 starters.
I know most of you don"t know Tom, but there are some who do, including Matt. (But then, who doesn"t he know?)

Unfortunately, he had 2k left so, for the next hour, I had to listen to him and agree with him about how unlucky he had been to lose when he had a full house. I couldn"t see any reason to tell him that he was losing to a King.

It"s nearly Halloween, and the shops have got their Halloween stuff in - which reminds me of this time last year.
I was working on a contract for a large farming company that grew lettuce, onions and suchlike for most of the supermarket chains. For Halloween they also grew pumpkins. Pumpkins are usually orange, but they also come in several other colours, the most popular being purple, which are often called blue for some reason.
Last year, one of the major supermarket chains decided it would make a big thing about blue pumpkins and their marketing department decided that they would promote them as a new word they invented - "Blumpkins", being a combination of blue and pumpkin.
When they emailed their plans through to my company, one of the guys decided to Google the word Blumpkin in case it was a swear word in another language or something deviant in ours. It is fair to say that it was lucky he did so.
I"m not going to post a link - you can Google it yourself if you wish. A blumpkin is a combination of two activities, neither of which you could give the necessary amount of attention to and concentrate on properly, in my view.
The promotion didn"t go ahead in the intended format, there wasn"t a national scandal and everyone at the supermarket chain kept their jobs (unlike the lettuce company, which is now closed - partly my doing, but that"s another story).

No two ways about it - this is a brag post. I try hard not to post about my two daughters, cos they basically win at everything they do and people are not terribly interested in someone posting a string of boasts. I sometimes wonder if they are really my daughters, cos their achievements are way ahead of mine. I"m gonna do it this time, but I"ll try to restrain myself in future.
They have had a lot of their schooling in Australia. Rosie went right through at a very nice boarding school, finishing two years ago. At the same time, Rachel, who had two years left to do, got herself a music scholarship to Geelong Grammar, which is basically Australia"s equivalent of Eton, and switched to there. [Yeah, that"s right, they both finished Grade 8 music at about age 13, one sax & piano, the other clarinet & piano - what did I tell you?]. A lot of prominent people have been schooled at Geelong, including Prince Charles, Rupert Murdoch, the King of Malaysia, some Australian Prime Ministers and so on. Even if you do nothing and just pass through, it is an amazing formative experience and the contacts made are unsurpassed. But she didn"t just pass through. She is coming to the end of her time there (their academic year is opposite to ours - ie summer holidays are in December/January) and yesterday she won the Elisabeth Murdoch Award for Student of the Year out of one of the most talented groups in Australia. Just thought I"d tell you.
[For those who are not Australian, Elisabeth Murdoch (mother of Rupert) is a prominent philanthropist, whose achievements it is not worth bothering to start listing. Still going strong at 103.]
Rosie is doing okay too. She took a gap year and is currently stressing over upcoming first year exams in Medicine. Don"t think she needs to stress, though, cos last week she got 100% in something that counts for 10% of the year.
Okay, that"s it - I"ll go back to my usual level, posting about blumpkins and suchlike.

I have sailed now and then and been flying light aircraft for a little while and i"m ok"ish on meteorology in northern Europe, its all to do with in the winter, the pole is under a six months night and the difference of temperature with the equator is greater, thus the depressions deeper, the wind stronger and u get more rain fall.... Us poor souls who live north of latitude 40 will get rain most in the winter, some snow :) so in short it all depends where u are latitude wise as this will mean we will get influenced by the passing depressions on the front between the polar and temperate air masses... ck188 find that article, i"m confusing myself thinking about this, let alone trying to put it down in words...

Can"t find the article but that was basically what it was saying. The rain is always there but the pressure and jet stream dictate where and when it falls. For us winter. For others it can be summer.

It"s Winter in the whole Northern Hemisphere at the same time and vica versa. Even the hot bits are less hot. Does that mean the rain is constantly travelling across the Equator from the Summer Hemisphere to the Winter one and then the opposite way for the other half of the year?

I once spent two weeks in Trinidad from Christmas til the end of the first week of January. It rained every day quite hard from 4pm til 5pm (or maybe it was 5pm til 6pm), but not at all apart from that.

for my limited understanding its hard to explain :) although i"m pretty sure there are plenty of scientists that know how it all knits together.. my tuppence worth of how the climate works would be the seasonal cycle is complicated ;D i"ll try and give it a go but forgive my grammar as i write this out quick, for starters the Earth"s axis isn"t always the same thus at different times of the year, different latitudes get the most incoming solar radiation but how a lot of the weather/climate works stems from the equator getting hit by most of the solar radiation due to the angle it hits the earth at, when the sun is overhead at the equator then the northern hemisphere gets most of the the heat then when it shifts to the tropic of cancer the southern hemisphere gets the lions share.. also having a effect is land mass, the oceans and mountain ranges also have an effect on how it all works, the earths rotation plays its part and the atmosphere [from what i know the boffins call it the inter tropical convergence zone] then all this heat spreads from the equator to either poles on the jetstreams, then the oceans play there part in spreading heat ::) god its complicated, my heads hurting lol :) oh add in clouds :) and the fact how land mass and ocean mass effects them ??? the ocean effect i refer to is far as i know is called thermohaline circulation, from what i"ve gathered the boffins aren"t 100% sure exactly how this works...

in short the sun evaporates it into a cloud and it rains again ;) BUT incoming and outgoing radiation CAN determine the temperature of the ocean surface to the air and this part isn"t always guaranteed :"(

I"m working from memory but I think trilobyte fossils are very common.

Yeah Waz, I took it to the local Natural History Museum. It enjoyed that so I"m taking it to a poker tournament next.
It"s true - they"re not that rare, though most are found in Morocco or US and a few other places, but not Portsmouth. Of course, it might not be native - someone could have brought it from America and lost it or it might have escaped and got lost in the garden. All the ones on that link are stuck to rock, whereas mine is free to move about. I don"t know if that makes it more or less special, probably neither.
I thought the museum would be straight on the phone to London, saying that they had the most amazing discovery in history. Instead, they took some photos and said "enjoy your fossil". They emailed me a few days later to confirm that it"s a Calymene, for those who are well up on Trilobites.

I have been given the job of representing Wales at an event in Stoke on Friday.
Part of this role seems to be that I have to wear Welsh colours. This would normally be a great thing but last time I tried to enter a casino wearing a Welsh football top I was refused entry due to being drunk (which I am fairly sure I wasn"t). Further inspection of the facts seem to reveal that said Welsh top may have been the cause of me not being allowed on the premise.
With this in mind I am concerned that the team will not be allowed to compete in the said colours, and I believe it may be a cunning plan to prevent Wales winning the event, can you help me with what to do here as I seem to be in a bit of a pickle.

Clearly, the casino cannot restrict your entry on the grounds of something you MIGHT wear although being Welsh it"s quite likely that you will be wearing something objectionable anyway.

Delegation and outsourcing are part of the modern environment and there is very little we can (or should) do to slow their continued expansion. When you place a contract, the actual work is rarely undertaken by the principal you place it with. This is not the first time that a question on this thread has been answered by someone else and I am happy for this to continue. There are still some unanswered questions if you go back a couple of pages. Why not pick one and answer it yourself?

Tonight was the first chance I"ve had to see the Grosvenor in Gunwharf since it"s been refurbished and turned into a G. There is now a separate poker room with 10 ten-handed tables. However, there is a lot of space on the gaming floor and in the new show-bar, which they are intending to use for bigger tournaments. They have got a GUKPT this year, which I"ll definitely be playing (APAT please avoid the first weekend in June).
In tonight"s tournament, my play was pretty mediocre. Finished 5/66, not by adventurous play or even by sucking out good, but just by plain old waiting for a good hand and then doubling up with it. I haven"t tried that method for ages; maybe it"s time to resurrect it.

I"ve been having a strange time online recently. I haven"t played any significant tournaments, just whatever I fancied as diversion at the time. They have all been $2-$3 Stud/Razz/Badugi 20-60 runner type things (mostly 20-30 runners) - just the sort of thing I usually cash in for fun and win quite often. The thing is - in the last dozen, I haven"t won any and I haven"t even cashed in any. I have never experienced a run like that in those games before. The only thing I have cashed in this year online was 3rd place in a 20 runner Omaha Hi-Lo.
Either I"ve got worse, they"ve got better or it"s just one of those things. Them getting better could mean an improvement in the abilities of the existing players or an influx of better ones. So far, I"m putting it down to it just being one of those things that happen from time to time. I"m still expecting a turnaround, but it is already very overdue.
[Live has been a different story. I cashed in a tournament on Thursday and last night I decided on a whim to go to Brighton for a change of scenery and play some cash there. So I popped over to the Brighton Grosvenor, played £1-£2 NLHE for a few hours and finished £380 up due to a combination of a soft table to start with, the tougher players who joined trying to bluff on various rivers and getting lots of good hands. TBH it was largely due to getting lots of good hands. Of course, it was just one night, but I think I"ll have to go back soon to see if it was random or whether it is a worthwhile trip to make from time to time.]
But the Stars Stud-type games are usually my most reliable consistent go-to. If that is gone I"ll need to rethink what I do. I"m sure(ish) it"ll come back, but I thought that after missing in 4 or 5 tournaments. At what point do I accept that something has changed? When I miss in 20 tournaments? 30? I"m not concerned yet, but we"ll see what happens.

I see that the list of cities that have applied to host the World Gay Games [Gay Games X] in 2018 has been published. It is a list of many of the great cities of the world, including London. Boris Johnson and David Cameron have backed the London bid and are offering many of the Olympic facilities. As usual, Paris is in the running, along with Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It has recently been held in Sydney, Germany and various US cities, so they are not in contention this time.
There is one city in the list which seems a little surprising, to say the least. Competing with these great cities is Limerick. Limerick! Not even Dublin, which would be a stretch, but fecking Limerick. How ridiculous is that? From what I know of Limerick, it is pretty much a dump and has one of the highest crime rates in Ireland. My knowledge is 20 years out of date, so things may have changed, but I doubt it.

So my younger daughter Rachel has arrived in England for a gap year. She was going to spend it as a Jilleroo, which is like a Jackeroo, which is basically a kind of cowboy, but instead she chose to come to England to work at a boarding school helping with younger children, the same as Rosie did. First reaction - "I can"t believe how cold it is". That was before temperatures went down this week. To rub it in, yesterday was Sydney"s hottest day ever.

Yeah, it seems you were right. I went 18 games without cashing, then very min cashed 6/45, then 3 more blanks. That was horrible. I didn"t really think that everything could have changed so dramatically, but when you have made 1 cash in 22 at your best games, you start to wonder.
Now suddenly it has all come back with a vengeance and at exactly the right time. From an exceptional number of misses straight to a ridiculous number of bullseyes - poker is pretty daft. I have been playing the satellites for the TCOOP Stud, Stud Hi-Lo & Razz in the last couple of days, and have been smashing them. Not just crawling over the line, but finishing 1st by a distance from 50-60 runners several times. Picked up 6 seats so far, so a few T$ up irrespective. These are only small-stakes $3 & $5 games with $27 seats for the winners, but it is good to turn that corner.
The main tournaments are on the next three nights and I am looking forward to them now. Obviously you can sink in any event but, on average, I should have reasonable hopes of going deep in one of the three.

Thought I"d share a funny(ish) story about my mother. She tends to fall quite a lot these days and often can"t get up again without help. Though there are family and various state agencies that are in and out of the house several times a day, at night she is often on her own and has spent a few nights on the floor. I came back to the house one afternoon when I was home at Christmas and could see her on the floor through the window, but I had forgotten to take my key, so had to get one from one of the neighbours.
That"s not the funny bit.
Every Tuesday, a minibus takes her and her like to a local shopping centre and the poor driver sets them free for an hour or two. She has a walking thing with wheels and a seat, so she gets around at her own pace. Anyway, one day recently, she fell in the shopping centre. Some people came to help her up, but the security staff said that she had to stay on the floor til she had been examined by their medical people. She objected to this but was told she had to stay put. One of the original helpers was someone she knew as he ran a small shop that she often visited and she told him that she was embarrassed because people kept coming over to have a look and then going off again. So, he said that he would lie on the floor beside her and the two of them lay there for about 15 minutes while the centre staff did their thing.
That was the funny bit. The pathos is coming.
She still hadn"t done her shopping, so the Head of Security went round the supermarket with her and picked up what she wanted. There may have been a bit of CYA in his & his staff"s actions or they may have genuinely been concerned; probably both I would imagine. She was impressed anyway and sent thank-you cards to the two guys. When she went back the following Tuesday, she went to see them and say thanks again. The Head of Security had the card on display on a board and said it was the first one he had received in 20 years doing security. Then she went to the shop of the guy who lay on the floor and.........it was closed - he had gone out of business in the intervening week.
I don"t know what the moral of the story is. That"s life.

My online game selection skills are as bad as ever. I just see a couple of games that are starting and decide to play. I will often hop into a Stud or Razz game or two to wind down before bed. An hour and a half later, they have finished and everything is fine. Sometimes, though, I feck it up big-time by not paying enough attention to what I"m joining. I used to sometimes join $1 NLHE games on Stars that had a thousand players and cash out a long time later in 15th place for $10. The big problem with those games is that they pay a huge portion of the field, a lot of cashers getting twice their buy-in or less. The first 3-4 places get a decent amount, but all the ones from 4th to 20/30th get squeezed. I have avoided those for a long time but about 10pm tonight I registered for a Badugi game that was starting soon and noticed a $1 Omaha Hi/Lo already running with late registration, so I joined it for a bit of diversion while I was waiting for the Badugi, without noticing it was a mass-entry game. I was soon regretting having joined. 6 hours later, the Badugi is long finished and I have just busted the Hi/Lo in 6th for $32 and feel pretty dumb for getting involved. I hate these games and their payout structure.

What is the point of red sweets?
I like yellow sweets very much. Also orange. And green. Even purple. Or black. Green and yellow are my favourites though.
But red or pink can GTFO. I don"t know why they make them. And sometimes they make a lot of them. Tonight, for example, I found that a good half of my bag of jelly babies were flippin red or pink. WTF! Stupid things.
However, I am aware that there are many people who, for some unknown reason, like (even prefer) red and/or pink sweets. This is unfathomable to me, but I know it happens.
Some years ago, I used to have an arrangement with my wife"s sister"s husband, Harpreet, whereby I would keep all my red and black jelly babies for him and he would keep all his yellow, green and orange ones for me. Now he is my ex-wife"s sister"s ex-husband and I am not in contact with him. If anyone has seen a non-traditional Sikh walking around with a excess amount of jelly babies, please put him in touch.
In the meantime, would anyone be interested in entering into a sweet-swapping arrangement? You can have all of my red and pink sweets (and black if you want?) for any green, yellow or orange you have. I"m not just referring to jelly babies - l like most sweets (except toffees obv).

I"m developing an unwanted tradition of just missing final tables. In the last nine months, I have played four non-APAT tournaments outside Portsmouth and have made the last two tables in all of them and the final table in none.
888 Superstack - Mint - 11th
PokerPlayer Magazine - Vic - 11th
LPPL Nationals - Southport - 16th
And this weekend, Sussex Masters - Rendezvous - guess what - 11th
I don"t think I am ever going to make a final table again.
At least this one was different. In the first two, I had a big stack with 11 left and was nailed on to final, but was playing to win. In both I called an all-in from a smaller stack with AK and lost (to J7 and AT) and then went out when I shoved the next hand. This time I was the short-stack from more than twenty players out and just grinded into the cash and then laddered up some spots. It"s nice to have a change.

Granted, not every office ... but my latest one we did have rocking loungers "musical chairs/lounge", play elastic band wars, office cricket (gets quite dangerous that one) office golf (again, can be quite dangerous, especially when I"m filming it ... but worringly we have about 4 chainsaws lying around at the moment so hoping the Marble Arch Chainsaw Masacre isn"t about to happen ;-)

I thought horses sleep standing up. Yesterday, on my way to work, I saw a horse lying on its side in a field. Two others nearby were taking no notice of it. A mile along, I saw another one lying down, with one standing nearby. And then again, the same thing. I can"t recall ever seeing a horse lying down before, and then I see three within a few minutes. Unless there is a horse epidemic of some kind in the Chichester area, I assume it is something I just hadn"t noticed before.

They could have been. The worldwide web says that horses lie down every day - you learn something all the time. But then, as Richard points out, so do London buses. There is a logical mathematical reason why three buses arrive together, Richard. I think it"s cos the ones behind have to wait for the one in front to be straightened up. Something like that, anyway.

Hardly everyday....in fact, as I recall, it"s pretty hard to roll one of those bad boys. I think there is legal requirement of something like 28 degrees from vertical.

A local radio station, Wave 105, is broadcast in the factory and we can hear it clearly in our office. They have quite a limited MOTR playlist which changes from time to time, a mixture of 80s and current easy listening, which is very pleasant most of the time. I"m quite content to work with Queen or Rihanna in the background. But they are driving me spare with what must be the worst song ever. Justin Timberlake has one out that is the most tuneless, awful, horrible, grating noise I have ever heard. And it has been on at least twice a day for the last month. I was just about to post this and the bloody thing has come on again.

A lot of people were late for work here today. The Festival of Speed is on at Goodwood this weekend, starting yesterday, which means very long traffic delays on the carriageway by Chichester. Other entertainment events tend to start a bit later in the day, but not this one. According to the website "The action on the hillclimb commences at 08:45hrs on each day of the event. Gates open at 07:00hrs, which provides a great opportunity to look around the paddocks before the action begins. Car parks are free and open at 06:30hrs". No matter what time you leave for work or to go home, you will get caught in the traffic. There is no quiet window.
The programme shows that 8.45-9.30am today is "Land Speed Record, Pioneers, Pre-War, Classic Endurance Racers, World Sports 1953-68, 911", so I can see why people who are interested in cars get there early. I have no interest, and upset a guy I was working with a couple of years ago when I mentioned that I hadn"t bothered to use some free tickets I had come by.

Bee numbers are in decline and my company hasn"t helped. It employs bees to pollinate tomatoes, but as tomatoes have no nectar, the bees have to be fed. Unfortunately, no-one took the lid off the feed and the bees all died. A bit embarrassing. Tomatoes have been slow this year, due to poor light levels and dead bees.

Played on Full Tilt last night for the first time. I joined up to have a go at the FTOPS Razz and ended up finishing 22nd. I found myself in 3rd place when there were 47 left and started having delusions of winning thousands, but then I lost two big hands and ended up with much less, but enough to cover shots at the Stud Hi and Hi/Lo.
I was expecting the FTOPS to be similar to the SCOOP but it wasn"t at all. Losing one big hand put me in serious trouble early on, whereas in SCOOP you can weather losses more easily. It was a bit fast for my liking, though it turned out not too bad in the end.
So now I have another site to play in addition to the 476 others I already had. It seems pretty weird compared to any other I"ve been on before - not sure if I like it.

I played a Win-The-Button tournament for the first time at Gunwharf Grosvenor last night. Interesting format. I learned a few things, one being that if you fold your BB to a min raise from the Button, you have to put in another BB anyway, so making the call becomes more attractive.

Update on Gay Games X.
You may recall that I was surprised earlier in the year to learn that Limerick was mixing it with some of the world"s great cities in the competition to host the 2018 Gay Games.
The contenders were:
Amsterdam Limerick London Orlando Paris Rio de Janeiro Sao Paulo
It was announced last week that Paris has won. But the amazing thing is that Limerick made the shortlist. Somehow, it saw off most of the others and was in the final three-way run-off along with London and Paris. Of course, that was a two-horse race, but how did Limerick get that far? It is a small, unattractive, scruffy, dangerous, crime-ridden pit, nicknamed Stab City, though that is misleading, as gun crime is rampant in the gang wars there. I can"t believe it had the temerity to enter the contest at all, suggesting it has any place among the cities on that list, but I am gobsmacked that whatever nutters were judging this ranked it in the top three. I would rather hold an event in Kabul than consider holding it in Limerick.

Thank you to everyone who entered the limerick competition. The standard of entries was very high and I had a hard job deciding a winner. Unfortunately, two entries were received after the competition had closed and were ruled ineligible. The winner of the competition is the smexy Debbie Kimm, for rhyming poker with mediocre. In second place is me, for rhyming ChezGer with wager. Debbie"s prize, appropriately, is a weekend in the beautiful and historic city of Limerick.

You didn"t get that many entries for your little competition - I think you should be grateful for the ones you did get, rather than excluding them arbitrarily and offending people who have taken the time to stroke your ego. I finished a contract on Friday. It was along the coast near Chichester and I went there by train. I love travelling by train, but there are so many people using them who take the pleasure away. I won"t miss those.
The ones I hate the most are those who:
- listen to music on the train. A lot of people do this. Is it possible that they are not aware that the noise escapes? - talk on their phone. - put their feet on seats. There is an epidemic of this going on. - stand on the platform in front of the doors instead of to one side. - take dogs on the train. This one doesn"t happen much, especially in rush-hour, but it"s objectionable when it does.
I still like the train for its comfort, safety and lack of stress. I just wish there weren"t other people on them.

Before I left, I got to taste two amazing herbs last week.
The first was Lemon Verbena, which smells really strongly of lemon - just as strong as lemon meringue or lemon sherbet sweets.
The second was more amazing - Stevia. When you bite the leaf, it tastes just like sugar. It"s not just a bit similar to sugar or off-sugar like some sweetener - chewing a leaf tastes identical to eating a sugar cube.

Currently in Melbourne, where the big news is the spying scandal. Australia has been hacking the phones of the President, his wife, the Veep and half the government of its ally Indonesia, which is not pleased.
In other news, WA has passed a new law requiring Muslim women to remove a burqa or niqab to prove their identity to police, after a prosecution was unable to prove that a woman who had signed a police statement was the same woman who was in court. After consulting with Muslims and Sikhs, the requirement to remove headwear was changed to face covering only, which seems a sensible outcome.
Quite pleased that I managed to keep packing down to hand luggage.

I flew to Australia with Royal Brunei, which was very pleasant. I booked it on price, but checked the leg-room first, both to find out the leg-room and as an indicator for other aspects of the flight, and 33" is pretty good. One thing I hadn"t realized, though, is that it is a Muslim airline. We had a nice prayer before take-off, translated into English and two kinds of foreign on the screen, though it went on for about five minutes, which was a bit long. A nice touch is that the information screen always includes the distance and direction of Mecca, so you can keep your own prayers on track, if you so need. The biggest impact, though, which came as a surprise to many passengers, is that there is no alcohol served on its flights, which is why there will never be an APAT event in Brunei. Otherwise, the in-flight service was good. A bit disconcerting, though, to be told each time you land that the penalty for bringing in drugs is death.
There was an Orthodox Jew in full regalia on the flight from Melbourne to Brunei. I don"t know whether he didn"t know the set-up when he booked or didn"t mind. I didn"t need to run into any trouble en-route but, luckily, there were no incidents, though I never did see him again after take-off.
I made the mistake of stopping off in Brunei on the way back. If you fly with them in the future, don"t do this. There is nothing there. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is about the size of Banbury and you can walk around it in twenty minutes, unless you stop at the department store. In fairness, there is more out-of-town shopping than in the centre, but nothing interesting. I don"t get to see many movies, but I usually enjoy them on a flight. There were some bad ones on these flights, though. One was The Internship. If you haven"t been to see this, don"t. It is simply the worst film I have seen for years. I also started watching Ocean"s Thirteen. I hadn"t seen any of this series and was expecting it to be entertaining, but it wasn"t. I stuck it out for half an hour but with over an hour and a half still to get through, I couldn"t bear it any longer and switched it off. I did enjoy Chronicle a lot, though,

I popped into The Crown Casino in Melbourne a couple of times last week. It is something else - gaming tables and machines as far as you can see. Apparently there are 500 tables and 2500 machines, though I can"t verify that. Also, there are lots of bars, restaurants, cinemas and nightclubs and a fast-food court. Three hotels, totaling 1600 rooms. The casino gets almost 50,000 visitors a day and is the largest private employer in the State. Lots of pretty girls around (plus transsexuals in a couple of the bars, if that"s your thing). And the poker wasn"t very tough. What more could you want? The only negative was that they don"t serve food at the poker tables. They do serve drinks, though, which the waitress puts straight onto the poker table.

Dinner break. It has been one of my worst tournaments ever. I usually only get runs like this in the WCOAP ME. In six hours of play (hourly levels), I won one hand in Level 2, one in Level 4 and one in Level 6. I also nicked the blinds without resistance twice in L6. That"s it.
I played really tight for the first couple of levels. That wasn"t hard, as I was on a very aggressive table with lots of 3-betting and so on and I was getting 93, 94, T2, etc all the time. Moved table to an easier one and played a few hands with small pairs, Q8 suited, 78 suited, KT and the like. Whatever I have had, the Flop has been the opposite. Down to 6k now and the BB will be 500 after the break, so something has to give soon.
At least I have had the opportunity to play a larger buy-in tournament, which I have been wanting to do for a while. The frustrating thing is that the standard of play isn"t all that. I have seen large bets on the River when there was a gutshot and three of one suit on the board. Each time, they have been called and an overpair has been shown, which has won. Top pair was shown by the caller on two occasions and, the other time, they mucked, but I assume they had something like that. The bet would never have been called in APAT (or LPPL), but it probably wouldn"t have been made in the first place. These guys won"t fold, so I need to hit a hand.

Because he has made the world more dangerous. He has made the position of the US and other Western governments much more difficult. Should governments have information that the public is not privy to, or should the public know everything that the government does? I think that the latter is not desirable. How difficult does it make future negotiations with allies if they know everything that the US really thinks about them, for example? Releasing classified information to the public is more than just irresponsible; it is downright criminal and traitorous imo.

Stopped off at The Vic on the way back from Stoke and played a 19-runner £30 rebuy GUKPT satellite. Banked tyvm. I should just play at The Vic all the time; it is by far my winningest venue. I played a 10-runner STT satellite a couple of years ago and won a seat in that year"s GUKPT ME, though the actual event didn"t work out. I also won a 70-runner MTT and an APAT there, and I crashed in another APAT. So this one brings the running score to 4/6 (albeit two of which had tiny fields). My game selection remains as crap as ever, though. I am due to play an LPPL game online on Saturday night, which should be interesting if I"m still in the live game (yeah, I know - won"t be a problem, etc).
This is in stark contrast to my bogey venue, DTD, where I can never win a blasted thing. I have played no end of tournaments there, but never seem to get very far, whether it is an APAT event or one of their own. I"m probably the only person who is delighted that the WCOAP is taking place elsewhere this time.
It"s all very strange. I have no doubt that the venue thing is an illusion - random occurrences showing some repetition, and I am seeing a pattern that doesn"t really exist. I wonder whether other people find the same thing with venues.

I"ve been reading the novel Crystal by Katie Price, which I found in a drawer at some company. I recommend this inspirational work, which does a brilliant job of portraying life in our post-modern world. Be warned, though, that it is not an easy read. This book is quite challenging and you may need to stop and absorb what has been presented, probably re-reading certain chapters to grasp them more fully before moving on to the next.
Here is a short extract, to give you a flavour of what to expect, but you will only obtain the full benefit by reading the entire work:

So, had a fun day at the GUKPT. I had Willie Tann on my right in seat 3, I was in 4, Alan Vinson in 1, so there was plenty of catching up done. Tann was a lot of fun. He knows everybody, and they all came to touch the garment of the great man. I didn"t know most of them, but those I recognised who came to our table to pay homage included Padraig Parkinson, Boris Becker, Bambos Xanthos and a Boatman.
There were a couple of bizarre incidents. Simon Trumper arrived with his second bullet. On his first hand, he raised my BB from 200 to 5400. He told me straight away that it was a mistake and he had mixed up the 25 and 5000 chips cos he"s colour-blind. Christ. I was mulling over whether it would be considered bad form and I would be disowned by the poker community if I shoved over it. T2 didn"t seem the best option if he called though. As it happened, Tann shipped anyway. Back to Trumper, who says "Oh well, let"s compound the mistake by calling". He wasn"t in such bad shape with 99 against AQ, but he was down to 2500 after the board came xA22x. Hmmmm. A while later, with BB 600, Tann raised. "Thirteen thousand". He puts in 1,300, but the dealer makes him put in the 13k. No-one calls this time. Keith Hawkins came to seat 1 halfway through and told me about his days in Portsmouth.
I was short-stacked all day and, in the end, crawled through to Day 2 with an pathetic embarrassment of chips that I wouldn"t glorify by calling it a stack. I was expecting to be eliminated any minute for at least the last four hours, but somehow didn"t get put out of my misery.
I suspect I"m not long for this game today. I appear to be on a table of mostly shorter stacks, though not many as short as me. Got one of the chip-leaders to my immediate left though.

Went back with 16k. After two hands I had over 50k. First hand AK; shoved over a raise, called with AQ by mement_mori himself, Mickey Petersen, which made the original raiser fold. Next hand I get AQ, flop is AQx and I get loads. Then I had KK cracked by someone who doesn"t know the difference between early and mid-tournament play and called a raise with 89 and ended up back where I started, where I"ve been ever since. Went even lower, but shoved anything pretty a few times to get back a bit. Shoved over Brammer"s raise with 22. Told him some nonsense about not minding getting knocked out now that the dinner had just been served. Anyway, he folded.
60 left now, 31 get paid. I"m still favourite to bust soon, but who knows? Looking around, there seem to be only two others from my table yesterday still in, which is amazing considering the stacks some of the others had.

Out 47th or 48th, doesn"t matter which - they both receive the same prize as 300th. There are plenty of pro players scattered through the field, but it seems that there are also some people playing these tournaments who regard them the way I regard LPPL games in the pub during the week - as a bit of fun, with a poker game thrown in, but mainly a chance to meet their friends. A quarter of the field re-entered, so those have an advantage over the ones who satellite in with one shot as they can go all out (all-in?) with their flush draws, etc and either get a double stack or come back in with the same chips. If they lose, the other player who can afford to take big risks gets the chips.
Anyway, no spondulicks, but I enjoyed it a lot.

A couple of observations:
I saw plenty of people squeezing out the corner of one card and then the other. Slows down the game when a few of them do it one after the other in turn. It"s a K! Aw, the other one"s a 3. Just look at your fecking cards! I haven"t noticed this going on in APATs or other lower-cost tournaments, so why are people in high buy-in events drawing out the suspense like a bunch of housewives playing 3-card poker?
On the Trumper thing, the only place I have seen this happen before is DTD. Some of the tournament chips are quite close in colour there and I have seen people put in a hugely wrong amount on several occasions, not because they are colour-blind, but because the chips are too similar. As I say, I have never seen it happen anywhere else. If he has a particular personal problem in this area, you would think that the issue at DTD could have been avoided.

Had a strange one the night before last - I cashed three times in the same tournament. Had three entries in the MTOPS HORSE and they all went deep, so I finished 18th, 55th and 107th for a total payout of not very much. As usual, all the cash was top-loaded, so I took on all the flips, was riding high for a while, but eventually lost some huge races. It"s bizarre, though, to look at the player-list during the game and see that you are 11th and 14th at the same time.

I know we all get bad beats all the time, but sometimes you just can"t believe it. First, one of my entries got dumped out of the MTOPS 10-Game by a 3-outer, when winning the pot would have put me near the top with 630 left. NLHE KQ v KJ. Bet pre and Flop, all-in on Turn. He called each time. [8s Ks 3c 4h] [Jh]. Can"t blame the other guy too much for that one, I guess.
This pot, though, was to go 14/181 with one of my other entries. Playing PLO, I couldn"t believe his hand when I saw what he had got it all in with. Just an over-pair and a dodgy flush draw, which was drawing dead to my made top Full House. He effectively had nothing, drawing to two Queens. TYVM, that"s the hand I needed to push for a proper result. Already thinking about how to play this big stack. The river is a Q - you"re kidding me!

The Eurovision Song Contest is regarded quite differently in Ireland than it is in the UK. They are quite proud of having won it more than anyone and the lead-up is an established landmark in the year.
It all kicked off on Friday night when The National Song Contest was incorporated into The Late Late Show. A panel gave comments after each singer and the manager of one them objected to Louis Walsh being on the panel when he has links with two of the contestants (who ended up finishing first and second btw). Linda Martin, who was also on the panel, looking as much like a drag queen as ever, represented Ireland twice in the Eurovision, coming second in 1984 and winning it in 1992, both songs written by Johnny Logan. She is part of Louis" in-crowd and set about the complainant.
I see he"s from the same area as you. I thought you were going to tell us that he"s your cousin.
No not cousin John, we were pals as kids, nonetheless, he"s a really nice guy and makes a valid point.

Just had a bizarre finish. You know how people often say that they are bored, usually as a cover for a dodgy call? Well it seems this guy was telling the truth. He played for a couple of hours and then just gave up. He shoved a load of hands in the NL games and, when I asked him why, he said he was bored. Then this hand, where he put 12,000 chips in and then folded, deliberately leaving himself with 506 chips and all-in next hand with less than a small blind. He hadn"t buggered off or disconnected - he acted in the next hand, standing pat on all draws, even though he had junk, in an apparent attempt to lose and end the game. Pretty strange.

Shamus used to play for Chesterfield and has played for Northern Ireland Under-18s http://mobile.irishfa.com/news?id=5885, but his career seems to be in decline. Until three weeks ago, she hadn"t ever won a poker tournament (though she had four second places in March). Then, in the first two weeks of April, she won six tournaments in a row at Caesars Palace.

Plenty of fun near our office today. Nigel Farage was in town to press the flesh, but things didn"t go smoothly. First the UKIP bus, covered in slogans about Common Sense, veered dangerously to the right and crashed into a train station. Then the UKIPers were kicked off the Guildhall steps and told they couldn"t photograph Nigel there. All in all, not a good day for the nutters.
I hope, for the sake of the locals, that Calrl Pirlglrim never decides to move to China.

I got a new job a while ago, working for the Council. I"ve been supplied with my own brush and a hat.
It"s quite different to the commercial companies I have been working at before, but I"m finding it really interesting. I"m still doing accounting, which is fine cos I get to play with spreadsheets, though I did have to attend a couple of snooze sessions on Council Year-End Accounting. So I now know the difference between a Condition and a Restriction and between a Provision and a Reserve, zzzzzzzzzz. The interesting bit is being involved in quite a few things that are going on around the city and having meetings with people from the local Leisure Centres, Golf Clubs and so on, and a company that is going to provide dog & litter wardens. I had to attend a public meeting on the Lido and was mildly chastised afterwards for smiling at one of the people who had come to speak against the proposal. Being the lowliest Council person there, I was the nearest to the public, which was a bit worrying, in case I caught something, but it seemed natural to give a little smile when she came forward. Apparently, we"re supposed to be impartial.
It has been uncomfortably hot in our area these last couple of weeks, so we have now been told that we can move to the hot desk area if we like. It"s cooler there.

So, it seems that Portsmouth has got state-of-the-art kennels, built not that long ago. First I heard of them was yesterday, but apparently they are the envy of other Councils. People came all the way from Leicestershire last week just to see them, which wouldn"t have been my idea of a fun day away from the office.
That"s all great, but it seems that, having been built, the kennels are not being used to anywhere near their capacity. As I understand it, strays and unwanted dogs are kept there until someone takes them, but that is the only use to which the kennels are being put at present. My boss has asked me to go there to see the place some time this week and then to come up with some ideas as to how the facility can be used more - if they bring in income, so much the better, but they don"t have to. Yeah right, so that"s easy then. I thought I joined to do Accounts, not to have to think. If anyone has any ideas, I"d be grateful to hear them.

A new guy started in our office today. His name is Bo, short for Bohun. I think Bo could be quite a cool name, especially if he was a 25-y-o Australian with longish blonde hair. In his case, he"s an English accountant, about 45, with short grey hair. The name doesn"t seem to suit him, but maybe I"ll get used to it.

They played the Bristol Dot2Dot festival the last 2 years. This year they played the Nottingham leg of the same festival. But whereas MC stormed off the stage there after being booed, heckled, and soaked after having wave after wave of beer thrown at him, Bristol (and Manchester) seemed to really enjoy them :)

I"ve been back from Vegas a while now. There were a few things there that surprised me:
The Prices It was so annoying the first time I went to pay for something and was told that I had to pay more than the price-tag because of tax. The second time was also annoying. However, by the end of my time there..........it was still bloody annoying. What a dumb system. At least those ones showed a price though. There were lots of shops that put no prices on their stuff, so I tried to avoid those cos it felt that they could just charge me anything they liked.
The Outfits The dealers and waitresses mostly wore very little, especially the waitresses in The Rio, who basically wear lingerie. Harrah"s clearly has a different policy to other places, as it was the only place where I saw older women serving. They still wore the same outfits though. Quite strange to see several sixty-year-old women in hot pants carrying drink-trays around.
The Moustaches I imagine that I can go a year in the UK without seeing someone who has a moustache without a beard. While they may be an endangered species here, they have clearly never gone fully out of fashion in the US.
The Under-Beards I had thought that the beard hanging below the chin, with no hair on the face, was just found on good ole boys down South. I was surprised to see it on cool dudes and family men. Still looks weird though.
The Displays I didn"t go to any shows, but I saw the fire and water fire displays outside a couple of the hotels. I"m not really interested in these but, not for the first time, I was bemused to see half the crowd recording the displays on their phones. Hey guys, it"s on now - you"re missing it in order to record something you"ll probably never watch. And if you do want to see it again, there"ll be a much better recording on YouTube than the crappy version you"re making.
The Shorts It was damned hot and a lot of men wore shorts, but they all only seemed to wear khaki shorts. I was surprised that the men"s clothing was so conservative when it came to shorts, but old and young, cool dude or not, if they had shorts on, they were khaki. Very disappointing.
The Pianos The duelling pianos at Harrahs are incredible. How they achieve they atmosphere they do in that bar is beyond me. Two singers bash out middle-of-the-road songs and play baby grands and, somehow, whip a couple of hundred people into a frenzy. "Sweet Caroline, dum dum dum........"
And finally.............
The Hookers More to the point - where were they? I never saw one the whole time I was there. I had heard that you couldn"t walk on The Strip or go into the hotel bars there without being accosted. Well, I spent plenty of time walking around and tried the casinos and bars in The Rio, Harrah"s, The Quad and Flamingos without once being approached. As there was nothing doing in any of those, I tried The Mirage and The Venetian, but still no luck. There was one very attractive girl who spoke to me in The Venetian, but it turned out that she was just looking for her friend. We chatted for a while about general topics, like which hotel I was staying at, but then, just when I thought we were getting along well, she had to go to carry on looking for her friend.

I played this hand pretty badly. The scenario was that 1,350 were being paid and there were about 1,360 left at the start of the hand. At the end, there were still about 1,354. I assume he was just calling on the Flop and Turn with the intention of making a big bluff on the River, in the hope that I couldn"t call on the bubble, and then accidentally found himself with a straight. Or perhaps he thought that my small bets meant I was light and hitting one of his over-cards would be enough to win.

This article made me smile John. Especially about the 60 year olds wearing hot pants. Whatever next. As for the mens" shorts, they were probably brits. Surprised they didn"t have hankies with knots on their heads. Unlucky with not finding the lady of the night which you wanted. You didn"t go to the right place obviously. I don"t think they are as brazen as the Italian girls who stand beside their burning braziers waiting for good looking guys to come along.

While I was in Vegas, I played against several big-name professional players. I saw Seidel, Negreanu, Brunson, Raymer and Ho numerous times, though I didn"t recognise Negreanu the first time with his new dark hair colour. There were a few that I had closer dealings with:
Barry Greenstein Two to my right in the Stud tournament, with an empty seat between us until Steve Sung arrived. He didn"t say much. Spent most of the game watching basketball and golf on the telly and discussing his bets on them with the guy beside him, while playing poker on his tablet. I got into one particular hand with him and he spoke to me afterwards "We both had what we said we had". Oh mercy, I"ll never wash that hand again.
Steve Sung An Asian guy arrived late and sat in the seat to my right. "Hi Barry. You were on my first final table. Maybe it"s an omen". Oh crikey, that doesn"t sound good. So this guy has had multiple final tables? He turned out to be Steve Sung, who has already reached fourteen final tables and won two bracelets. He turned out to be the luckiest player I have ever played against. For some reason, I kept getting big starting hands and whenever he completed on 3rd street, I reraised. This happened about ten times in succession - whenever he opened, I reraised. If I was him, I"d have been sick of it, but he never showed any indication of annoyance. I won several pots, not just against him, and got up to 10k from an starting stack of 4.5k. Then it started to go wrong and he had a succession of hands where he backed into straights, when he shouldn"t have been in the hand. I remember him filling one on 7th against me for a big pot, when he should have folded earlier and then, the very next hand, he completed and I reraised, holding (AK)A. He was holding (T8)Q, but completed and then called the reraise. I caught another K on 4th, while he got a 9, called another bet and hit a J on 5th for a totally disguised straight, with three rounds of betting to go. I lost loads in that hand, but I was WTF internally when I saw his cards. He was chip-leader at the end of the day and finished an undeserved 9th imo. He did make another final table later in a 2500-runner event though, so maybe he gets the benefit of the doubt.
Sam Farha We were already well in the money in the Seniors when I got moved. I had just lost most of my chips, so probably looked like a nitty hanger-on. I was in seat 9, Simon Trumper was facing me in 6, Farha in 7, both with lots of chips. Trumper recognised me, as we had recently played an extraordinary hand at the GUKPT in London, where he raised my BB, but mixed up the chips due to being colour-blind, and raised to 9,000 when he meant to raise to 450, which resulted in him losing his whole stack (not to me). Anyway, I wasn"t there long, though both of them followed me out soon after.
Phil Hellmuth I didn"t play against him, but I saw plenty of him. He was on the table next to me at one point. Later, I watched him in the late stages of another tournament. If you know the Amazon Room, there is an area with four tables where the penultimate stages are played and where you can sit on raised seats right over the players. Anyway, there were fourteen left in this tournament and a guy moved all-in against Hellmuth on the River and then produced a large plastic space-gun and offered it down the table for Hellmuth to zap him. Hellmuth - "I was going to call but you"ve convinced me. I fold." Good decision, I expect. Hellmuth was butting heads with the guy next to him, who was giving it back just as much. This got Hellmuth into full flow. "Are you out of your mind?", "Look Sonny,............." - all his usual phrases. His antagoniser promised to take all his chips. I wandered off and came back half an hour later. Hellmuth was still there, but there was no sign of the other guy. Whether that was as a result of their spat, I don"t know. However, I do know that they were in a dark corner with no cameras around, yet Hellmuth was giving him the full treatment, so it ain"t done just for the cameras.
Erika Moutinho I got into a big hand against Erika quite early in my other Holdem tournament. I had QQ and raised pre-Flop. Flop was 4xx and she called a bet. The Turn was another 4 and she bet. Hmmm, I don"t like this so much but the bet isn"t that big; I have to call. River Q - Kerrching! She led out and I asked to see her stack (she was at the other end). "It"s a bit early, but I"ll call if you go all in" she told me. Oh really? Okay, all in. She called. I felted a pro!
Mukul Pahuja On my table late on Day 1 of the same tournament - see above. Been tearing up the WPT and went on to finish 101st in the Main Event this year. Didn"t say much.
Ken Aldridge What, you"ve never heard of him? He"s not a pro, but he did win a bracelet in 2009. He was on my table towards the end of Day 1 in the Seniors event and he was wearing the bracelet, which was very shiny. He had the sleeves of his hoodie pushed up a bit to show it and told us that he has worn it every day since he won it. Along with the bracelet, he also has another quirk. Don"t know if you can spot it:
And I played the early shift of the Portsmouth 25/25 and hightailed it to the wedding afterwards. Back today with buckets of chips, so we"ll see what happens. Chris Webber also through. Dave Howard played the late shift, so I don"t know if he"s still there too.

I"m posting, which means I"m not busy playing poker.
Had one of the the most ridiculous days I"ve ever had playing poker. There were about 54 players back for Day 2 and I started as one of the leaders with 122k, thinking I had a great chance of going deep. I then proceeded to lose just about every hand I played. The first 30k went quickly due to calling a raise from the BB and catching a bit of the Flop, then opening a few times from the Button, being called and either folding by the end or losing at showdown. Then I called a 28k shove with AK against someone who had A7, so that was me down to 60k.
I still had a little more than average stack and could have shut down, and probably made the money, but I decided to carry on playing, raising from the Button or seeing Flops. I played quite a few hands, and lost all of them except two - I got one Flop c-bet through and I got a double-up when I shoved AT, called by 88. Apart from that, it was one-way, just continuously reducing my stack. Finally I shoved 20k with AK, hit a K, but he made a flush, and I finished 26th (17 paid) in only the fourth level of the day.

The war is over. Wars, in fact. Ireland has been at war for the last 348 years, since declaring war on Denmark in 1666. It also declared war on France in 1744, so has been fighting on two fronts since then. Now, a ceasefire has been called and both wars are over. A good thing too - we should be trying to get along as well as we can with our European partners, notwithstanding them being foreign and all, and being at war with each other doesn"t foster a good working relationship. The governments of Ireland, Denmark and France have issued a joint statement - "The ending of hostilities will allow us to work together towards a better future for Europe and focus on our common enemy, the British".

Daryl Peach (England B) called him "the scum of the earth" after a nasty match and he had an infamous match against Steve Davis. England A came through a strange match against USA, racing to a 7-2 lead, which disappeared when the Americans tied it at 7-7. A dry break from current US Champion Shane Van Boening gave England a chance, and they ran out to get to the hill and then broke and ran the last for a memorable win. Earlier, the day started with an upset as Austria broke and ran four racks to see off China and then Finland emerged on top from a tough match between the last two winners.

In the semi-finals, England came through a tough match against Finland 9-6, while Holland ran away with their match against Austria, losing the first but then not dropping another rack, including running out four-in-a-row from 4-1 to 8-1.

In a match full of errors from both teams, Holland reached the hill first at 9-7 and should have finished it, but allowed England back in and the match went hill-hill. England then squandered their opportunity by scratching the break in the final rack to give Holland ball-in-hand. That should have been the end of it and Holland ran the first seven balls of the final rack, but then made an error to let England in. England then should have won it, but missed and that should have been it in Holland"s favour, but they were very unlucky as the cueball and eightball went either side of the nine. They hit it but left an opportunity and this time England didn"t miss and finished off the nine.

With two cards to come and all the chips in the middle, I already have AAAJJ and he has a pair of eights. There is only one way for him to win, which is if his last two cards are the other two eights. What was even funnier is that he then sat out. The whole point of playing is so that you can induce opponents into making hopeless plays.
So what if occasionally we experience a run of those hopeless plays paying off? Variance sucks, and it may never even out in your lifetime, but you have to keep playing in the anticipation that it will.

Hadn"t realised you had replied, David. I have always rolled with your view and spurned the internet-is-rigged argument. On this occasion, I couldn"t come up with any explanation for why the people involved had played their hands as they did, unless they knew what was coming. I played one hand where we had both doubled our stacks to 100k early and were both top ten out of a few hundred. He called a big 3-bet pre-flop, called big amounts on the flop and turn, such that he had a third of his chips in by that stage, holding T6 on a K937 board. The position we were in was not the time to start risking his stack on a wild goose chase. An 8 at the end put me back down to 50k starting stack. I managed to get back up by winning a race and then the same thing happened again, almost identically. I played two other tournaments there and pretty much the same thing happened, with people putting very good positions in jeopardy for no logical reason (and receiving the freak card every time). These tournaments were all satellites for a live DTD event and were filled with DTD regs, which was the main reason I was suspicious. I haven"t played on Party since. Think I"m ready to try again now.

So the first Republican debate Is tonight. Seventeen candidates split into two groups. It is likely that Jeb Bush or Scott Walker will be the nominee next year but, in the meantime, the debates should be a lot of fun - and could change history.
Some the candidates are very well qualified, but just don"t seem like people I would want to have running the world.
Would you want Rick Perry, three-time Governor of Texas, who can"t remember which government agencies he wants to abolish, running the world?
How about Senator Ted Cruz, who has a glittering legal career behind him, including being the youngest Solicitor General in Texas history and arguing more landmark cases in the US Supreme Court than anyone else in Congress?
And, of course, there is Donald Trump. As the unexpected front-runner, Trump suddenly has something to lose, so the word is that he is going to tone the usual bombast right down.
Some of the others are just as deranged.

But they have it on a small screen, with no sound, as you"re supposed to have a cable subscription. You can fake it by also calling up Fox Radio, which has it live (the sound is in sync) and expanding the screen.
These are the options for the new New Zealand flag. The old New Zealand flag is crap and looks pretty much the same as the Australian one (a bit like the one on the left of the second row of the new options), so they"re getting a new one. 10,292 designs were submitted and these are the 40 that have made the long-list.
Unfortunately, the new options are crap too - and a lot of them are very similar. They nearly all have stars, a fern or a koru. I thought a koru must be a wave, representing the sea that surrounds them, but apparently it"s not. It is also a fern, but one that is unfolding. Ferns are a big deal in New Zealand. There are a couple of triangle things and one that looks like a sex position.
A few of the options would be okay as company logos, a lot of them look like ice-cream containers and most are just terrible. Makes you wonder how bad the rejected proposals were.
The cost of the whole process is estimated at nearly $26m, mainly for two referendums. Keeping the old flag is still an option too.
From what they"ve got, I think one of these will win. But, really, they should start again.

Interesting, so this is not the first steps to Independence apparently. All this bloke wants is a new flag. If the voting figures are high for the flag choice then it might result in a high turnout in 2016. I would rather them keep the Union Jack in any design but the one they have as a choice is not good. Hopefully, when the choice comes they will vote to keep the flag they have now.

It wasn"t like a child"s one either - it was a compact A6 booklet which seemed to be aimed at adults and she was using fine-tipped markers. But it was still a flipping colouring book. Checking on the Internet, I find that adult colouring books are now a thing.
This is what we have become. In a world of boybands, frappacinos, Kardashians and WAGs, we have reached a new low where adults are doing colouring books.
I have to admit that she did colour some lovely flowers though.

Come on JM, this girl was afraid of flying, and doing the colouring thing was a way to ignore her fears by concentrating on that. On the other hand, she may have liked you and indicated that as she was not on the iphone or pad, you could talk to her. Maybe missed an opportunity there. oops

I was reading some people"s bucket lists on the interweb yesterday and I realised that a lot of people really want to do things that I have no desire to do.
So, mainly based on other people"s bucket lists, this is my F.uck-It List of things that I have no interest in doing before I die:
