APAT Cardiff
In the year of the diamond jubilee it seemed appropriate that the queen would visit me with regularity in Cardiff. Unfortunately every time I picked one up, I seemed to flop one to go with it, but then run into someone else with a bigger hand. Vikrum Mehta had me completely owned at our table sitting directly on my left, and I feel no shame in saying that as he's a fine player. Ran AQ into AA more than once (though did bink a straight against Steve Robinson with one of them), QJ into AQ a couple of times and my final exit appropriately with QJ v AJ, flopped a queen but out to the nut flush.
The 4:45am rise on Saturday to get the 7am flight wasn't ideal, followed by 26 hours of poker, alcohol, more poker, more alcohol and a rivered 1k cash pot at Les Croupiers meant I was a complete wreck on Sunday. Not best to then sit down for the APAT PLO game, and it showed when i didn't bother to lay down my FH 1st hand in and another river made it my sharpest exit in a live game ever.
My travelling buddies Chas & Jamie Kearns made it a weekend to remember, we had some great laughs along the way and i can't thank you guys enough for being superb company. Always a pleasure catching up with all the APAT regs (you know who you all are) and was also great to meet the likes of Lucas & Fidel for the first time after some great online games with them. To the locals I met, I also tip my hat to the likes of Jamie and The Doc for adding to the experience and to the G Casino & Les Croups staff for making us all welcome and looking after us. To the chinese restaurant manager I can only say that you're a crazy lucky fish, but i do hope our paths cross again sometime soon

Been reading the blog of Sir Des of All APAT and his opening salvo brought back some really fond memories of my mum, who many of you will know passed away in January 2011. Today would've been her 72nd birthday and I have a tendency to look back on the good with a smile, as opposed to sadness.
What Des wrote about his bus trip reminded me about the strange way your brain operates after a bereavement. She was the first person to enter my head when I won the Scottish APAT in July, simply coz I knew she'd have an even broader smile than me at that exact moment. She'd also be over the moon to know I'll be captaining Scotland at DTD in August when we all meet up for the ECOAP. Even now, I'll occasionally still pick up my mobi and go to phone her and for some strange reason still have her number on my phone.
So here's to Wee Mo, Happy Birthday Mum, Love you always

Just finally watched Moneyball, directed by and starring Brad Pitt as has-been pro baseball player Billy Beane, now General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Based on factual events around the 2001 & 2002 seasons, it's a very interesting take on how The A's took on the baseball big boys with a far smaller budget. Other than that I won't give any more away, other than to say there are some fine strong performances and if you like baseball or know anything about the game, then you'll surely love this

All gone a bit Van Per-shaped!
So all teams have now played their opening games in Euro 2012 and I for one have been rather bored till today. Add to that the fact that I pinned my hopes from day 1 for a Netherlands win and Van Persie as top scorer
So it really couldn't have started much worse for me. Thankfully I'm feeling much more inspired following the Greece v Czech and Poland v Russia games this evening, particularly from some of the fantastic intricate play and movement during the latter.
After watching the first lot of games I can only suggest that the likes of Netherlands, Spain & France could play with the same kind of direct approach and urgency, as opposed to trying to walk the ball into the opponents area. Not only would it be far more entertaining but would possibly reap them more rewards.
Here's hoping Van Persie & Co put it into practice, play with a bit more width and flair, don't rely so heavily on Schneider and get themselves back in the running

Many of you will no doubt know that, following redundancy from my main employment in Jun 2010, my bankroll took a bit of a beating over last 2 years due to only having a 12 hours a week part-time job for 18 months of it, up till january this year when I finally got back into full time employment. Basically any money I won at poker was used to supplement my income and keep me afloat. This has meant that my levels have dropped significantly and other than my 4th place in the opening week of the online league, there's really been not much to cheer about.
So I've found myself playing these little low-stakes MTTs, needs must and all that, more or less to keep me conditioned till my full time wage levels out my finances again and I can make a reasonable deposit into my account(s). I've also found myself playing far less than I've ever done over the past 5 years and that can't be a good thing.
Last night I'm quite chuffed to say that i gave my meagre bankroll a nice boost when I finished 2nd of 1865 in a little $1 Stars MTT for a nice profit of around $230. It was a long 7 hours grind, but for me feels very very worthwhile in the general scheme of things

Cheers guys, happy with how I played and overall result. Hopefully can continue to build on it and get back to levels I was at in 2008/9 now that I don't have to keep withdrawing the money. Nice play in the Big $55 as well Curly, you'll run deeper again one of these days soon mate
Cheers also to Chas, Suzanne and GiMac who railed me for spells through the night, didn't finish till 6.45 this morning so all encouragement was welcome
