APAT held the 888poker European Amateur Championship at the Rendezvous Casino, Brighton over the weekend of 21st-22nd January. This is the final event of APAT’s successful fifth season of live events, where for a £75 buy in players receive a 10,000 starting stack and 45 minute clock two day tournament.

The early chip leader was Julian Brooker, all-in with set under set on the flop he rivered Quads to knock out Robyn Houlford. Regular APAT players Vikrum Mehta and Ben Burnhill both moved to the head of affairs during the day but the chip leader by the end was James Barber.

Barber was helped by raising with Kings, being called by Steve Jay in position. The flop came Jack-Jack-Seven. Barber bet and Jay moved all in. Barber eventually called, and was comfortably ahead of Eight-Seven suited. Kings held and Barber did not relinquish his lead for the rest of the day.

At the end of day one 24 players remained with the chip leaders as follows:

James Barber 109,300
Vikrum Mehta 72,000
Martin Sieder 68,700
Lewis Keeble 67,800
Tony Johnson 66,100

Vikrum Mehta was on great form as the play on day two moved towards a final table, knocking out Ian Thompson and John Murray in quick succession in the minor cash positions, out-drawing both with Ace-Ten against Ace-King. Elsewhere Tony Johnson and Marie Sherwood moved towards the top of the chip counts, and James Barber stayed in the hunt with a magnificent fold of pocket Queens against Sherwood’s pocket Kings on a three-four-five board to a four-bet shove all-in.

The final table line up was as follows:

1 James Barber 99,800
2 Marie Sherwood 128,100
3 Siamak Siamak 95,500
4 Jonathan Walker 162,800
5 Lewis Keeble 61,400
6 Tony Johnson 207,300
7 Mike Johns 48,900
8 Mark Davidson 125,000
9 Vikrum Mehta 311,200

With blinds on the final table beginning at 4000-8000 the two short-stacks were under immediate pressure. Keeble made a move with King-Eight in late position and found Johnson in the blinds with pocket Kings to knock him out ninth. Mike Johns shoved King-Jack and was eliminated eighth by Jonathan Walker holding Ace-King.

Siamak Siamak then shoved Ten-Nine suited on the button and Johnson found a hand again in the blinds, pocket Sevens. He won the race and Siamak exited the tournament in seventh.

Mark Davidson was knocked out by Vikrum Mehta in sixth and James Barber fell to Tony Johnson in fifth.

Four handed, stacks were approximately equal, played continued for some time. Eventually Walker and Mehta had a big all-in pre-flop confrontation with Ace-Jack and King-Queen respectively. A Jack flopped, knocking Mehta out in fourth place.

Tony Johnson was eliminated by Marie Sherwood in third place, his flopped top pair losing to Sherwood’s two overcards, which hit on the river.

Walker began Heads-Up with a chip lead and over nearly two hours Sherwood first managed to get equal in chips with a flopped flush, then in the key confrontation Walker with a turned straight and Sherwood with two pair and a flush draw played out a pot that saw Sherwood river a flush to take control, winning soon afterwards.

So the winner of the 2012 APAT UK European Amateur Championship was Marie Sherwood who won £2,780 and in addition to winning the Championship Trophy, Medal and prize money, she will also receive an 888poker live tournament entry.

With a £100 buy in and a 10,000 starting stack, 45 minute clock tournament, the 119 runners created a £11,900 prize pool including added value of a tournament entry from APAT to the winner.

Play in the early stages was fast and furious and players sought to build their stacks early. Zhang Yangran and John Anderson were way out at the head of affairs from the mid levels of the day, both amassing impressive stacks over double that of their nearest competitiors. Craig Dawson was their nearest challenger, playing consistently throughout a day that saw fewer players return for the second day than normal.

At the end of day one 20 players remained with the chip leaders as follows:

John Anderson 197,100
Zhang Yangran 186,200
Craig Dawson 79,250
Abdul Hafeez 79,200
George Downie 66,500

The field included two former APAT National Champions in Jason Jones and Charles Mason, with 13 players paid.

In the first level of day two Yangran won a key pot to eliminate Dawson, Ace-King versus pocket Jacks all in pre-flop, to become an overwhelming chip-leader with over 300,000 and seventeen left.

George Downie was the player who made the most progress on the run to the final table, winning a key pot with pocket Aces against Mark Holliday’s pocket Queens and Alex Thompson’s Ace-King. He also accounted for Rob Painter on the bubble, Ace-Seven defeating pocket Fours.

The final table line up was as follows:

1 George Downie 209,100
2 Jason Talbot 59,000
3 Andrew Thompson 123,200
4 Abdul Hafeez 69,300
5 Jason Jones 72,250
6 Steve Harrison 85,900
7 Laura Pahomova 101,800
8 John Anderson 210,700
9 Zhang Yangran 280,600

With blinds on the final table beginning at 1500-3000.

The final saw two early exits. On the first hand Jason Talbot took pocket Tens against John Anderson’s Ace-King, a King on the turn consigning him to a ninth place finish.

Jason Jones fell in eighth. His raise with pocket Kings was called by Andrew Thompson with Six-Five in the blinds. Thompson flopped two pair and turned a full house to knock Jones out.

Two players were then knocked out on the same hand by Andrew Thompson. Steve Harrison limped with pocket Kings, inviting action while looking for his double-up. Thompson and Abdul Hafeez completed and checked in the blinds. Incredibly Thompson flopped a set of eights, Hafeez a set of fives and both Harrison and Hafeez exited the competition following the inevitable bet fest.

The final kept delivering huge confrontations. Anderson raised with pocket Aces and was called by Yangran with a suited Ace. Yangran flopped the nut flush, and called flop and turn and then a shove on the river to win a pot for over half the chips in play and knock John Anderson out in fifth.

After a period of four handed play a key pot saw Yangran with Kings run into Downie’s Aces. Pocket Aces held and Downie won the 800,000 pot and took a commanding chip lead, which he was never to surrender.

After hanging on for over a level Andrew Thompson then picked the wrong spot to shove, running into Laura Pahomova’s Aces in the big blind with Nine-Four. He departed in fourth.

The three remaining competitors then concluded a deal that saw overwhelming chip leader Downie take the lion’s share of the remaining prize money. He proceeded to knock out Pahamova in third, then Yangran Heads Up when Ace-five held against King-Seven.

The winner of the 2011 APAT United Kingdom Open was George Downie who won £3,300 and the APAT National Gold Medal and a seat at an 888poker live event.

The Amateur Poker Association & Tour held its first event in the United States with the APAT North American Amateur Championship, which was held at Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas on 19th & 20th November 2011.

Early play was brisk with chip leader Don Logan accounted for several opponents in the first three levels, before he was joined by Jeldon Fernandes at the head of affairs. Indeed throughout the day, with only the exceptions of Robert McMillan (Arizona) and Michael Murphy (Oregon) play was largely dominated by the fifty one APAT members who travelled from the United Kingdom and Ireland to the tournament.

In the mid-levels, former APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker HORSE Champion Andrew Tracey became chip leader, before he lost some ground late on doubling up Colin Wilson and Dawn Dineen, putting them both in contention.

Meanwhile Jack Prime and Glenn Laming clashed on several occasions, Prime eventually being in the ascendancy as Laming exited near the end of day one’s play.

Scotsman Neil Dawson moved through the gears and doubled up near the end through Jeldon Fernandes to end a fast and furious day’s play as the chip leader.

At the end of day one 15 players remained with the chip leaders as follows:-

Neil Dawson 93,600
Michael Murphy 88,400
Jack Prime 86,700
Dawn Dineen 85,700
Tod Wood 75,100

The action and exits continued quickly on day two and the final table; which was railed by a boisterous and good natured contingent of players from the UK, lined up as follows:-

1 Neil Dawson 27,600
2 Dawn Dineen 106,600
3 Steve Roderick 60,700
4 Tod Wood 156,700
5 Stuart Ward 40,600
6 Jeldon Fernandes 64,000
7 Andrew Tracey 153,000
8 Brian Harland 80,700
9 Michael Paterson 135,100
10 Michael Murphy 52,900

Andrew Tracey accounted for Jeldon Fernandes, the first exit at the final, Aces holding up against a flopped flush draw. Tracey was by now over 250,000 chips and a solid chip-leader.

Stuart Ward knocked out Brian Harland in ninth, pocket Kings against a short-stacked Ace-Eight. Ward then ran pocket Queens into Paterson’s Aces in a 200,000 pot. Left shortstacked, former European Amateur Champion Ward was then knocked out eighth when Steve Roderick with Queens defeated his King-Jack.

Welshman Roderick then knocked out Neil Dawson in seventh, calling a ten big blind shove with Ace Ten suited, flopping an Ace to beat the suited connectors of Dawson.

Michael Paterson then flopped two pair after button raising, and Dawn Dineen check raised all in on the flush draw. The American missed the draw and exited in sixth.

With five left Roderick, Paterson and Tracey vied for the chip lead ahead of shorter stacks Tod Wood and Michael Murphy.

Roderick then eliminated Wood in a blind on blind battle Ace-Ten calling a shove from King-Seven before Murphy’s short-stacked vigil ended unavoidably when four handed he ran pocket Tens into Paterson’s Pocket Jacks.

When Paterson then felted Roderick with pocket Eights against a suited Ace three handed, he was a commanding chip leader with over 500,000 of the 900,000 in play

Roderick then had Queens against the Pocket Jacks of Andrew Tracey, three handed. Sickeningly for Roderick a flopped Jack gave Tracey the pot and Roderick was eliminated in the Bronze medal postion.

Heads Up, Paterson began with a two to one chip lead which he maintained before, eventually, the all-in confrontation saw Paterson with pocket Eights beat Tracey with Ace-Queen to win the event and cap a superb US visit for the Scotsman and his wife.

So the winner of the 2011 APAT North American Amateur Poker Championship was Galashiels Michael Paterson who won $4,231, the APAT Championship trophy and Gold medal.

Paterson, a member of the Silver medal winning Scotland team at the APAT European Amateur Team Poker Championship in 2008 was lost for words when presented with the Championship trophy by Charles Nistler, a Director of Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.

APAT now moves on to the APAT UK Open in Manchester in the first weekend of December. For all the details of how to enter this and future APAT events and free membership of APAT visit www.apat.com.

The 184 runners created a £9,200 prize pool, half going to the top three teams (points scored for the top 50 finishers) and half to the top individual finishers. Once again APAT provided added value with a UKIPT seat to the individual winner of the Championship.

As expected play was extremely competitive throughout with the best performing teams in early play Hetton Social League, Hendon Mob and blonde Poker: All three did not lose a player until well into day one play.

In the last level, Rob Swindells who had been near the head of affairs all day, won a big pot against Alan Lake of Black Belt Poker, pocket Queens against pocket Tens to move into a dominating position.

At the end of day one 35 players remained with the chip leaders as follows:-

Rob Swindells – Gambling Network Forum – 235,900
Sam Swannack – Bristol MeetUp – 110,900
Ian Thompson – APAT Forum – 91,700
Steve Roderick – blonde Poker – 90,600
Nick Mazur – Black Belt Poker – 82,600

Top points scorers so far were Black Belt Poker, due to finishes in the top 50 positions, and six teams had three players remaining so there was all to play for.

With Duncan Godfrey’s exit in thirteenth it was confirmed that Gambling Network Forum with two players remaining on top of existing points finishes were to be the 2011 United Kingdom Team Champions, leaving The Hendon Mob, Black Belt Poker and APAT Forum to fight for second and third, while there were also the individual honours to play for.

The final table line up was as follows:

1 – George Lawson – Newcastle Poker Forum – 277,000
2 – John Murray – Live Pub Poker League – 148,000
3 – Peter Newton – Newcastle Poker Forum – 149,000
4 – Gary Peniket – Hendon Mob Forum – 219,000
5 – Phil Laws – Gambling Network Forum – 104,000
6 – Nick Mazur – Black Belt Poker – 195,000
7 – Karl McDonald A World of Poker 170,000
8 – Rob Swindells – Gambling Network Forum – 353,000
9 – Ian Thompson – APAT Forum – 167,000

Having started the final aggressively to try and move himself into contention, Phil Laws was unfortunate when running pocket Kings into Nick Mazur’s pocket Aces to leave the tournament in Ninth. Ian Thompson then accounted for Peter Newton. Pocket Tens winning a race against Ace-King, leaving Newton out in Eighth.

Long time chip leader Rob Swindells, who had led his team to the Team title at this stage, had suffered a difficult final, his aggression back-firing. Blind on blind he four-bet shoved Ace-Three and Ian Thompson called with pocket Jacks. The Jacks held, Swindells was out Seventh and Thompson had now become a commanding chip leader.

Thompson’s form continued. Gary Peniket had re-raised with pocket Queens and Thompson four bet with Aces. Peniket called and was elimiated in Sixth but he had nevertheless guaranteed his Hendon Mob team the runner up position in the team event.

George Lawson was unfortunate to exit Fifth when his Ace-King was outdrawn by Karl McDonald’s King-Jack of hearts which turned a flush. John Murray was the short-stack of four and began to push hard to get a stack to compete. One push too often, with Deuce-Four from the button, found Nick Mazur in the blinds with Aces to knock him out.

When Karl McDonald was knocked out in the Bronze medal position, pocket Tens falling to Mazur’s Ace-Jack, Black Belt Poker tied up the final cash position in the Team Championship and Mazur took a substantial chip lead into the Heads Up battle with APAT Forum’s Thompson.

After an hour of Heads up play with Thompson scrapping hard to overcome the chip deficit the key pot played out. Thompson button raised King Jack and Mazur called with Seven-Four suited. The flop came Jack high, with a Four. Mazur check called and then check-raised all in when the turn produced another Four. Thompson called with two pairs, and was confirmed Silver Medalist following a harmless River card.

So the winners of the 2011 APAT United Kingdom Team Championship were Gambling Network Forum, with Nick Mazur of Black Belt Poker winning the Individual element of the tournament.

The centrepiece of the five day APAT WCOAP festival at Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn Club was the No Limit Hold’em World Amateur Poker Championship main event, which attracted 405 runners over two starting days, creating a £42,900 prize pool with a first prize of £12,900. The event was run in partnership with www.DTDPoker.com who provided several added value seats to Dusk Till Dawn events for WCOAP Champions.

199 players took part in Day 1a, each starting with 15,000 chips and a deepstack structure affording bountiful play. After 14 levels and 12 hours play 26 players made it through to the final day. On Day1b 206 players began and, with somewhat tighter play to the fore, 38 players made it through.

Once the chip counts were combined the chip leaders going into Day Two were as follows:

Greg Yates 274600
Simon Hyde 235900
Chris Salmon 235400
David Garden 225800
Gary Orme 213700

64 remained with 45 paid, while an average stack of 95,000 represented over 25x big blinds, so it was all to play for.

One player dominated the run down to the final in the first few hours of Day Two, Dave Garden. Such was his dominance that he had 2 million of the 6 million chips in play as the field broke to the final two tables. This chip lead inevitably meant that many other players were playing tournament poker with below average stacks and it was Christian Rzegotta of Germany and Andrew Duffin, by virtue of eliminating Greg Yates in eleventh after finding Pocket Kings in the big blind, that came through the pack to be the nearest challengers as we arrived at the final table.

The final table line up was as follows:

David Garden 2,166,000
Christian Rzegotta 1,142,000
Andrew Duffin 1,060,000
Paul Cammiss 385,000
Colburn Tomlin 336,000
Gary Strang 331,000
Bradley Girard 247,000
Gary Orme 227,000
Mark Sanders 185,000

First to exit was Mark Sanders, taking pocket fives in a race against the chip leader with Ace-Queen, only to see Garden flop two Queens. Garden’s commanding position strengthened further when he knocked Tomlin out in 8th in a rollercoaster of a hand. Tomlin had Pocket Eights, Garden Jack-Ten. Garden flopped a Jack on a paired board, Tomlin turned an Eight but Garden rivered a third Jack to give him a higher Full House.

Gary Orme was unfortunate to exit in seventh. Garden shoved an unopened pot in the small blind with Four-Three and Orme called all in with King-Queen suited. Garden rivered a Four to knock out his third player in a row in the early final table stages

Garden continued to cut a swathe through the final table, calling a shove from Bradley Girard with Jack-Eight, and beating Pocket Sevens to knock Girard out sixth. Paul Cammiss then eliminated Christian Rzegotta in fifth finding Ace-King behind the German’s shove with King-Queen.

Gary Strang had clung onto a short-stack throughout the final until he too fell to Garden, who rivered a Straight with Ten-Five in the blinds against King-Jack.

Three handed play slowed until Garden once again accounted for an opponent, his Ace-Seven out-drawing Paul Cammiss’ Ace-Nine, a Seven falling on the flop.

Heads Up Dave Garden started with a 4 million to 2 million chip advantage over Andrew Duffin. This became an equal situation until over the course of two levels Garden took control. In the final hand Duffin pushed Ace-Five suited into Garden’s Ace-King. Big Slick held and Dave Garden became the 2011 APAT World Amateur Poker Champion, winning over £12,000, the Championship Trophy & Gold Medal.

114 runners participated in the WCOAP Omaha Championship, the concluding event of the 2011 World Championship Of Amateur Poker festival at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham. Players began with 10,000 chips and a 30 minute clock providing ample scope for play in this ever popular game.

Chris Peers the Heads Up WCOAP made a determined attempt to follow up in this event but exited with two tables remaining. APAT National Champion Steve Redfern unfortunately bubbled the final table, his second bubble finish of this WCOAP, although on this occasion he secured a minor cash.

The final table line up, which included international team players from Spain and Italy was as follows:

1 Daniel Partridge
2 Neil Dobney
3 Juan De Diego
4 Henry Griffiths
5 John Valentine
6 Ritesh Chauhan
7 Ian Thompson
8 Andrea Lombardi
9 Joanna Sharp

Finishing 9th, in his second WCOAP final table of the year was Dan Partridge, being eliminated by Andrea Lombardi. Chip leader Henry Griffiths then accounted for Jo Sharp, Aces cracked by King-Queen-Jack-Nine.

Out in 7th was Ian Thompson, with Henry Griffith’s once again cracking Aces, this time with a turned straight. Ritesh Chauhan then fell foul of a “run down” hand, his Ace-Queen-Jack falling to Andrea Lombardi’s five-six-seven-eight.

Spanish Captain Juan De Diego fell in fifth at the hands of Neil Dobney’s Kings. Henry Griffiths’ flopped full hosue then accounted for the shortest remaining stack, John Valentine departing in fourth. Griffiths then knocked out Neil Dobney in third, flopping a set of sevens, and took a commanding chip lead heads-up against Lombardi.

This situation soon reversed as Lombardi doubled up twice to assume the chip lead. After the lead seesawed several times Lombardi took Ace-Queen-Jack-Deuce against Griffiths Ace-Queen-Five-Five, hitting two jacks on the board to be crowned APAT WCOAP Omaha Champion 2011.

114 runners participated in the extremely popular Six Max WCOAP Championship event. As befitting the variant, play was brisk with an abundance of early exits before play settled down with the 10,000 chip 30 minute clock structure affording plenty of play.

The final table began with three young players, Liam Batey, Liam Crawford and chip leader Daniel Partridge all holding over 250,000 chips. Short-stack Lukas Dasynski, the winner of the APAT Welsh Amateur Championship earlier in the current APAT season, was eliminated on the first hand of the final by Partridge.

Portugese player Nuno Andrade, a member of the medal winning Portugal team in the WCOAP Team Championship, was then extremely unlucky in consecutive hands. He pushed Pocket Kings and was called all-in by Ian Gregory with Ace-Five suited. Gregory rivered a gusthot straigt to leave Andrade severely low on chips. Next hand, finding King-Queen he shoved and was called by the big blind Partridge with Four-three. Andrade flopped a King but two threes fell on the board to knock him out sixth.

Partridge by now had a commanding position, especially after he knocked Gregory out in fifth. Partridge was playing with flair, in most pots. Liam Crawford fell in fourth at the hands of APAT regular Phil Tompkinson, losing a race with Ace-Queen against pocket Tens.

Tompkinson himself fell in third, Liam Batey flopping top pair maning local player Liam Batey and Daniel Partridge began Heads Up with equal stacks.

Unsurprisingly with two aggressive players the battle did not take long. Batey raised four-three on the button and Partridge called with a suited Queen in the big blind. The flop gave Partridge second pair and Batey a straight draw. Batey turned the straight, which led to both stacks in the middle, and Partridge drawing dead. Liam Batey thus secured the Championship and first prize of over £2,000.
