So you"re on Wheel of Fortune and you get just about as unlucky as you could get. You only hit two letters from the ones they give you and none from your own letters, leaving you with an impossible puzzle. The board is NE_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. So what would you guess? New Year Party? New York Times? New Blue Shirt? Maybe Net Debt Ratio is the first thing to pop into your mind. The answer is nothing as easy as that, but last week this guy got it straight away in one second. If you want to try it yourself, you"ll have to stop the video pretty smartly before he gets the correct answer out. With instincts like that, I need this guy on our poker team.
Good to see that Vanna White, turning those letters for the last 32 years, is still going strong and looking good at the age of 57.

Just had a bizarre finish. You know how people often say that they are bored, usually as a cover for a dodgy call? Well it seems this guy was telling the truth. He played for a couple of hours and then just gave up. He shoved a load of hands in the NL games and, when I asked him why, he said he was bored. Then this hand, where he put 12,000 chips in and then folded, deliberately leaving himself with 506 chips and all-in next hand with less than a small blind. He hadn"t buggered off or disconnected - he acted in the next hand, standing pat on all draws, even though he had junk, in an apparent attempt to lose and end the game. Pretty strange.

The Name of the Year competition is currently taking place. These are all real people whose names have cropped up in the news in the past year. The 64 nominees for the 2014 competition, divided into Regionals named after previous winners, are:
It takes all sorts - Karhonda Porcha was arrested for hiding drugs in her "crotch area", but I can"t see her winning. The favourites must include Cardinal Polycarp Pengo, Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam and Loki Skylizard, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center, New Jersey.
Personally, however, I"m most looking forward to the match-up between Eve Gruntfest, Professor Emeritus of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado and Ginger Pinholster from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
There is a British interest to support in Becky Leckey, England Pool B-International.
MintTrav:
This one might be easier to read. I don"t know why they don"t allow more space for the names. This version includes Bamboo Dong, Managing Editor of Anime News Network, who seems to have been withdrawn from the later version for some reason.
In the final of last year"s competition, Leo Moses Spornstarr, aspiring actuary, beat footballer Pornsak Pongthong, by 482 votes to 481.
MintTrav:
They are down to the final eight in the Name of the Year:
Curvaceous Bass v DeQuarium Lumpkin
Loki Skylizard v Shamus Beaglehole
Equanimeous St. Brown v Eve Gruntfest
S hitavious Cook v Chillie Poon
For my money, Loki is home and hosed, and I would go as far as to predict a Skylizard-Gruntfest final, but you never can tell in these things.
