Alternates
APAT:
The following was part of the English Amateur Championship Player Briefing.
Alternates will be allowed the opportunity to take part during the first two levels.
An additional prize of £75 will be created as a result of each alternate who is allowed to enter. This money will be awarded to the players finishing directly outside the above prize pool, so if for example 4 alternates take part in the event, then finishing positions from 21st to 24th will each win back their buy in of £75. The alternates will be chosen from the APAT controlled reserve list started at the venue at midday on the first day of play.
This will enable a small number of additional members to participate in an APAT event.
Alternates have been discussed a great deal by the APAT team and our members.
The decision to allow alternates to play was not taken lightly but we have based our decision on the fact that a lot of members regularly travel to APAT events and join the reserve list. This may give a few more of these players a chance to participate and given the huge demand to participate in APAT events, we felt the decision is a player focussed one.
Alternates will start with 10,000 chips at the start of level three. Historically, three or four players may be eliminated within the 25:50 and 50:100 levels.

Sounds like common sense to me.
I can imagine there"ll be some opposition to it, but it looks like the most reasonable solution for all.
I guess that people who are knocked out in the first three levels will not be able to buy back in as alternates? Is that specified explicitly in the rules, although I guess it"s covered by the controlled reserve list for alternates being created from midday?

Not suprisingly, I believe this is a good decision, well done gents.
However.... (I know some people are never happy!! ;))
I am sure you have given this a lot of thought, but I don"t think creating one additional £75 prize place per alternate is the best way to go.
For future events, I would like you to consider making one additional prize, of £225, for each 3 alternates. I think most people would prefer one additional chance to pick up a prize that would go some way to covering their expenses for the weekend, rather than 3 chances of just getting their buy-in back.
Ken Jude:
Isn"t that likely to be bigger than the last place payout in a tournament without alternates?
