I thought UA was part of the star alliance (as are Lufthansa) so why don"t they honour your airmiles ???

They are...just not sure if I can USE airmiles to book. I can EARN miles with Austrian (if I book direct) but that costs more than booking through Expedia.
TBH...I"m gonna be using up a load in October to upgrade to Business Class to LA so I"m not that fussed.
Hmmm...Austrian (via Expedia) have a 14.05 flight that lands in Vienna at 17.25 only a few quid more and I can leave the car at home, take the tube to LHR and save on Airport parking. Works out about the same.

Great idea - I"ve got some Airmiles somewhere. Found a Statement with 1899 miles, which is enough. Apparently not - their rules say that your account is deactivated unless you add Airmiles at least every two years, so they closed my account in Sep 09 just cos there hadn"t been any added since 2001 - the buggers. I told them that"s the same as a bank emptying your account and keeping the cash if you don"t use it, but for some reason they weren"t persuaded.

In the light of recent developments, where Iceland farts a cloud of dust and all flights in and out of the UK are affected, I have been researching alternative ways of travelling to Vienna.
A leading expert predicts that this will be spewing on and off for the next two years.
So, if the worst comes to the worst, it's either road or rail. Rail is the preferred way as I can relax with a bevy or two. Not bad at all.

London-Brussels - £69 return (Eurostar to Brussels in 1hr 50 mins WOW)
Brussels-Cologne-Vienna £70.60 return (SparNight in a couchette compartment WTF)

Latest "Ash News" is encouraging. Looks like [touch wood] flights will be back to operating normally within the next week to 10 days after the airlines have repatriated everyone and got all their aircraft back to where they need to be.
Being a worrywart, I"ve been holding off booking the flight...I"m about ready to commit although I"ll probably wait "til this weekend just to make sure.
