ThinkerJE takes a trip to Vegas

ThinkerJE:
Tuesday (today)

Get up about 1pm and decide that a day off poker might be in order.  I still feel very bad about my cash game play last night and think some time off is a good idea.  I decide to go to the Rio to catch up with the HORSE event and get some WSOP souveniors.

Get the shuttle bus to the Rio from Ceasar"s and head into the main tournament area.  Cue TV cameras and security everywhere.  There are 5 tables left in the HORSE event and it is like a who"s who"s of the poker world.  The spectators are 3 deep to watch and I managed to get round all of the tables over the next 2 hours and watched some of the greatest players on the planet.  Cue the name dropping;

Negraneu (complete with Pokerstars on every part of his body)
Tomko
Hellmuth (in classic hands over mouth pose)
Juanda
Hollink
Madasow (making a load of noise at the table)
Kaplan
Reese
Greenstein
Raymer
Deeb
Mercier (looking very fit in real life)

Also seen about the venue;

Lederer (in deep conversation with his sister)
Duke
Lindgren
Violette

It really is a pleasure and an education to watch these guys play live.  The way they conduct themselves at the table is an example to us all.  The way they take the ups and downs, the beats and the wins.  They are on a different level.  As it is a limit event the HORSE is like an endurance race over 5 days rather than the usual no limit sprint events.  This should ensure that the winner has played the best over the event, great in theory, however all these players are so good that it must come down to cards at the end of the day.  Reese was the only player I saw get knocked out whilst I was there and they play down to 24 tonight, before the final table on Thursday.  So in effect they are only half way through.  A true poker test, I get the feeling it is not about the money, this event is the pro"s world championship with bragging rights on the line.

I then hit the WSOP shop and bashed the plastic by buying up WSOP gear.  Everything from a T shirt to a hoodie to a baseball cap to a deck of cards.  I wanted something to take back from the WSOP and might have gone over the top a bit.  I was such a tourist over those 15 minutes, buying anything with a WSOP logo on it.  I am so sad...

On the way back to the shuttle bus I spot a video poker machine and decide to try it out for $20.  I didn"t even release it was an aces or better machine (I normally play jacks or better), and so have to adjust my style when I don"t get paid for my pair of Kings.  Anyway about $4 in I get dealt 2 5 8 A 9 (2 spades, 2 diamonds and a heart).  I hold the ace and deal the cards.  To my amazement the deal comes A A A, so I have 4 aces!!!!  As I a playing the maximum credits (5x 25 cents) I get paid the bonus which is 4,000 tokens in total (OR $1,000 IN CASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

WOW, I am stunned and just watch as the machine ticks through the 4,000 tokens one at the time.  An old guy next to me peers over and mutters something like "lucky bas****, I have been here all day and you have just sat down".  I cash out immediately and get the ticket exchanged for cash.  I get the bus back to the strip feeling a lot better about life.

So I am now up about $1,150 paying video poker on this trip (and that"s before taking comps into consideration).  Whereas I cannot get a poker cash for love nor money.  Life is strange, is it not...

It is now 8.50pm and I am just about to get changed and off out to Ceasar"s.  It is the last chance to catch the pu$$ycat dolls (hopefully will be able to sneak some photos for the boys) and I will probably play the 11pm tournament.  It will give me a chance to try out a new style and try to get chips early.  Don"t want to have a late night though as I plan to play the $300 deepstack event at the Wynn tomorrow and it starts at 12noon.

NO BAD BEATS - VIDEO POKER RULES!!!

Unlucky mate.  I know it"s of little consolation but you should be pleased with your play.  I know it"s a terrible feeling being knocked out of a tourney, let alone the WSOP (I can only imagine).  Just keep doing what you"re doing and you will be rewarded soon I have no doubt.

Take it easy dude, see you at next friday"s home game?

Cheers mate.  I will be there on Friday, looking for 3 in a row.  Not been done before in Poker Home League history.
