Title: A Poker trip to the Algarve
Post by: Curlarge on April 13, 2012, 16:41:07 PM
For those that may have missed this yesterday, there is a trip to the Algarve in Portugal booked from 8th-13th November to play in a Portuguese Poker Tour Event in Vilamoura. The buy in is 110 euro for 10k and 30 min clock over the 10th and 11th, sorta APAT stylee. It is envisaged that merriment and laughter will accompany us, along with drunken frolicking.

A large villa has been booked and flights have been organised by 6 of us at present, but there is room for more. All in cost, excluding food and drink, is from £310 - £360 for 5 nights, but you can come for as many nights as you wish. This includes, poker, flights accommodation and transfer.

Let me know if you are interested as the price of flights is going up daily it seems.

A couple of links for info.

This is totally awesome...how much, you ask, so much that I"m actually planning on delaying Vegas for it...that"s how much.

Now, can I actually afford it?

Yes, we can book whatever accommodation we need to suit. Prices vary, but it should be fairly competative.

Spoke to Matty the Stockton Rock about this the other day..... interested but probably need to make a call later on in the year, disappointed no foreign shores "adventure" was on the APAT schedule this year, so this gets a big thumbs up from me. Would double look forward to it if the Portugal team were getting involved as well, miss those guys.

We can book additional accommodation as required, but remember that flights go up the longer you leave it. Numbers will dictate how competative another villa will be, but at the moment the are 2 twin rooms available at £100 per room for upto 5 days in the big villa. First come first served.

Still interested, Vegas aside, but working on factoring in the time off and/or cost.

Worst case, i may just book a separate (smaller) apartment with 1 or 2 bedrooms depending on requirements from others ITT.

BTW, Rich...do you have an address for the villa in case I/we"d like to be relatively close?

Google Maps is my friend.

Dont have an address yet, but it"s on the south side of Pinhal Golf course, about 1km north of the marina at about 1 o"clock. If you look on the link of the villa it shows a map on additional photos.

I would love to make this trip also, will not be able to make any plans until late summer though. Could be quite expensive, but you guys would be worth every penny. :)

We now have 13 APATers confirmed with flights booked (plus Rita Glavin whose there on hols) for this trip, plus 3 more deffos (friends of Ger - yes I know 3 friends seems a bit much but he says so) and another 4 booking over the next 2 weeks.

We can book as much accomodation as is needed, but flights are getting a little more expensive by the day, so if you fancy it, get your A*** in gear (Ger"s words obv.)  ;)

Apart from the ones already booked into the first mansion. 4 people have booked flights (and damn nearly 4 more confirmed) and are asking about accomodation so if you are going get in touch and Curley can work his magic.

If you"d read my blog entry recently you"d know I"d planned on an unofficial trip for January.

If I can"t make this one (and I really want to make it but Vegas is impinging) then I"ll work on a return to Lloret and see how things go.
At the moment, if I can make Portugal, then I may fly back on Tuesday and head out to Vegas the next day.

It"s a hard life.  ;D

Paulie, Sorry to go off topic but can you tell me more about possible trip to Lloret as I know the area well and am actually going there next week.

Is it the Casino in Lloret de Mar you are talking about which is part of The Gran Casino Royal Hotel?

Cheers

Jimmy

Enjoying the forum and just trying to read as much as possible to get up to speed.

I found a great deal for the trip for those that prefer a hotel over a villa.

Expedia are offering 5 night in "The Residences" in Vilamoura from most UK airports for around £220 all in. (plus transfers)

This is a new and quite s****y development, just a 5 euro cab ride from the Marina and Casino. There are a large number of hotels in the centre, but not all are of this standard.

Why don"t you give the chezger event a miss to save a few pennies, and then if you conclude that you still can"t go to the Algarve...... well nevermind eh, you"ll have more money for Christmas?

Davey, the bigger issue is really that you need to find someone to room with as well, as the villas are now full and any newbies are going to stay in hotels. If you are in a room on your own it will cost that bit more.

Hi people

OK, I need to send the buy-ins for the poker and also some information on each player by Oct 5th.

Therefore could you all please IM me with your full name as it appears on your passport, your passport number and your current age. I will in turn reply to your IM with my bank account details for you to transfer the buy in into. There are some charges to absorb in transferring the funds to the casino so I have set the buy-in @ £105 sterling. This may well leave a little to put in a kitty but I"ll only know this when it"s done.

In the spirit of the Travel Guru, who sadly will be missing this trip, I"ll try and give you an idea of what"s what in and around Vilamoura.

Vilamoura is nowadays quite a spralling town, in that the Casino and Marina are at one end and the golf courses are at the other. Therefore property expansion has generally been in between these two areas.

The Marina is undoubtable the hub of the resort, with it"s many lively bars, (particularly The Irish Cabin, which will no doubt be our spiritual home), restaurants and nautical attractions in close proximity to the Casino on it"s eastern fringe.

Next to the Casino are many of the larger hotels, which makes access to most faciltities pretty hard to beat.

To the north of the town are most of the golf courses, namely, The Old, Victoria, Pinhal, Laguna, Millenium and Vila Sol. Many of these are surrounded by villas and apartments and all offer a nice alternative for lunch, particularly Vila Sol and The Old Course.

Further afield, there are large shopping malls in Faro and Guia both about 20kms away), a go-kart track in Almancil (10 kms away), the famous "Julias" beach bar at Quinta do Lago (12 kms), a number of good restaurants in Almancil (10kms away) and a famous local market in Loule (15kms away) on Saturdays.

The main road along the Algarve is the EN125 which runs for the Spanish border to the east, all the way along to Cape St. Vincent in the West. If you are driving and get a bit lost, always try and get back to this road. There is motorway which does the same thing which is about 3 kms inland on the EN125, but this is now a toll road.

Depandant on whether you want to stay in Vilamoura or venture further along the Algarve you might like to hire a car. I have always used ZitAuto based at Faro airport as their rates are very competative, especially at this time of year and again a link is below. I will leave it to each person/couple/group to make their own arrangements here. You will need both parts of your driving licence to rent a car and you must be over 23 years of age.

Finally, we all need to get to and from Faro airport to our repective villas/hotels.

My suggestion for those in hotels is that you simply get a cab outside the airport terminal to your hotel and then book a car with the hotel if you feel the need. The transit time from Faro airport to Vilamoura is about 20 mins. I believe the cost is around 30 euro each way. Most taxis are black Mercedes with lime green roofs. You could also contact your hotels and see if the offer a shuttle service.

Alternatively you can get together and book a minibus transfer.

For those in villas, again the choice is yours dependant on yopu sightseeing intentions. If you do need a car then Zit auto if the best bet.

I have attached some links here for those who would like more info.

Clube Hotel Apartamento do Algarve.

Anyone heard anything about this place? Recommendations? I"m thinking about it as a solo trip IF I can get the following:

*Joobs" permission - the most important obv
*Time off work
*A cheap flight/accommodation deal etc
*An extension of my work contract (should know this week hopefully)

Either way, any recommendations for hotels would be muchos appreciated!

For the record, I really hate sharing rooms so would much rather pay the supplement.

Proximity to the casino would not be my over-riding factor...proximity to the pub would.

...but then I forget who I"m talking to.

Names and passports numbers sent to the casino and euros transferred today. Total buy in was £98.23 including all fees, so I have £6.77 per player (less £5 from Rita as she paid £100) so £184.56 in total. Therefore, please send you bank details by pm if you would like this returned to you, before midday Friday. Alternatively any monies remaining will be donated to a charity, prolly breast cancer awareness or similar.

Also, as we are only 2 weeks away now (wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii) can you all please send me your flight details for the fllght to Faro and I"ll publish a list of arrival times so people can try and double up on taxis

We are in O"Sheas... again!
Stu lost his passport. For some reason partial nakedness was involved in the search. He found it again but only after calls to various embassies.

It"s all good :-)

It may have been organised by Curly ( many thanks Rich ) but it was most definately, unmistakably, an APAT trip.

Fantastic trip. Many thanks to Curly and all the usual APAT"er that made it one of the best APAT weekends ever.

Poker + drink + craic + great company = APAT trip.

do you mean BJB?    ;)

Was not really my dance ... he arrived in the bar, grabbed me, span me round here there and backwards .... then left.   Not good for the head or the stomach when it"s full of cheeky Vimto"s (which I am totally blaming JP for)

I"m sure he just went from bar to bar every night just popping in and out ... never saw him have a drink once.
