Title: Coming Soon - National Online Cup
Post by: Des on June 17, 2012, 23:42:33 PM
Many congratulation to Scotland for their outstanding performance on winning the PokerStars.com National Online League, and to every region and player who participated, for supporting the League over the past 15 weeks.  I hope you"ve had as much of a blast playing in the League as we"ve had organising it for you.

Details of the next National Online League will be announced in the next two or three weeks, in the interim, we"re busy planning a National Online Cup knockout competition.

The event will run as a team event with each region able to enter as many 4 person teams as you wish.  Players can name their team whatever they want, as long as it"s connected with their original region, so you might have the Scottish Bravehearts, Scottish Ladies, East Scotland, etc etc.

We"ll get a more detailed information thread up on the forum during next week, but in the interim players can pool their friends together to form teams of four, or start advertising on the forum for others to join them in teams of four ahead of the National Online Cup.

The format will run as per the League.  If we have 60 teams start the league, then the leading 32 teams after the first round will go through to the second round.  The leading 16 teams will go forward and then the leading 8 will go to the quarter finals etc.

So whatever chance you felt you had in the National Online League, any team from any region can win the National Online Cup.  The event will be very competitive, so I"d like to see a lot of players step forward and organise teams for this unique tournament.

Look out for full details later in the week.

Just to clarify how this will work guys.

You can enter as many teams of 4 from the regions of the National League.

Just get together with some of your team mates, think up a relevant team name, and there you go, you can enter the National Online Cup.

If you want to use this as an opportunity to introduce new players to the APAT National League, then get them to sign up to the region and then they can play as part of a team in the cup competition.

The only condition is that all players in the teams of 4 must play for the same region in the National League and come up with a suitably relevant team name to their region.  i.e. "The Wrexham Ladies", "The Luton Exiles", "The Black Country Rubdowns", "The Scottish Champions", "The North East Geordies"

We are currently finalising the structure, but would be interested in players views on one thing.

With a cup competition, half the teams go out each round until one is left and declared the winner.

There are two ways to "knock-out" teams each round, either :-

A )  The top 50% of teams go through, rinse and repeat.

or

B )  Each team is drawn with another team, and the higher placed team of those two goes through, rinse and repeat.

Thoughts ?

I would go for option B - it means you can follow your 4 opposing players through the tournament.

Early rounds are likely to be ultra nitty - is there a way to incentivise attacking play - could points be awarded for number of kills.

I seem to recall that certain sites (perhaps all) had headhunter tournaments where the number of kills was recorded.

STEVE REDFERN
CLIVE PADDEN
TONY TRIPPIER

prefer B here. Though it would be gutting to run brilliantly and get ko"d by a team that runs even better, whilst at the same time,  a team that runs much worse can go through.

Still this seems better than the potential nit fest that option A offers

option A seems more plausible....... but B seems more exciting, and would add a really weird dynamic within the MTT.

If we went for option B, I wonder whether we could live stream the draw for each round.

Invite a couple of has been APAT champions along to draw the teams.

"Steve will draw the home teams, and Brian will draw the away teams."

"Make sure you give the balls a good mix up Bri."

Going to be difficult to fix the draw if we go down that route Leigh.... ;)

I"m very much in the B camp on this.

Option B sounds good.. Could add extra spark at the table if you get drawn versus a table with a couple of your opposition  ;D.. Draw could always be recorded a couple of days or so before game then posted on YouTube with a link to be viewed..?

Just thinking out loud for a moment regarding options A and B..... how about an option C....

Teams drawn against each other and run as a straight knockout, same as option B..... but rather than having a single MTT, what about having 8 handed STTs where each STT contains the 4 players from each team seated randomly.  Now that could make for some interesting team play opportunities.....

Did consider that, but would most definitely be delegating the admin on that one.  Trying to ensure the right players join the right tourney would be an absolute nightmare to manage, let alone setup in the lobby.   ;)

I had thought of something along the lines of:

Would it be possible to set this up as a "shootout" type comp with one round played each week.

Each player drawn on a table from which they earn points as per a STT.

Say 8 handed points 1-8

As the teams are only 4 strong the chances of being drawn with teammates at same table is small.

Points are tallied and top 50% teams advance to the next week, rinse and repeat

Hope this all makes sense. if it"s to be on Stars I"m sure they should be able to accomodate

would also like to see a plate comp for the teams losing out in first week to keep interest going?

Thoughts?

Geo

awwwwwwwwwwww that"s very nice thank you   :-*

Yes I played for Notts, before the rule came up that a player needs to play either where is born or where lives, and both is currently Germany.

I will finally move to the UK this year, but I think it is not east midlands, more likely essex and i do not know which area this is lol, I would be happy to play for east midlands though, i loved the notts team

just out of interest as we live in modern times  :D  could not the Internet count as region, for this 4 player team knockout cup? As this means I could play in any team of APAT members who are on my facebook friendlist  :D

I would vote for Option A

Just a couple of thoughts:

- Pref the games not at weekends as they would clash with various live games. I hear there are also some people who have what they call "family time" then.

- Ban anyone else who uses the phrase "rinse and repeat".

I think that 4 per team is a bit shallow as not everyone can play every match, plus with the holiday season approaching, a team could loose 50 per cent of their team in any one week. Perhaps 6 per team with 4 to count?

Q2. Is it all 4 players score or best 3 or 2 scores etc?

Interesting point, if the result of all 4 players counts, then play is still likely to be nitty. Best 3 finishes should open it up a bit.

And option B, by a million miles.

Whichever option you go for could you consider the following:

- A 4 from 6 option as Foggy mentioned earlier as teams may progress but find themselves unable to play the following week so 4 scoring from 6 would help in some way, either that or allow players to be subbed in the latter rounds (e.g. I can"t make R1 for an East Mids team but JB does and then it R2 it"s the other way round so I take his place??)

- Half of the players will be eliminated in week 1. Is there an opportunity for a plate competition?

FFS I"ll be in Sorrento  ??? How does that leave our team????

You unlucky, unlucky man.

I"ve just returned from Napoli. One day in Sorrento - absolutely HATED it!

How? I thought it was lovely

Went to Naples first - 3 lovely days, great food, great weather, great people, great fun.

Sorrento on the Saturday, walk out the train station and all I see are "ENGLAND", "FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST" at all the nearest pubs/bars etc. Felt like I"d gone to Spain.

In summary, Sorrento is very English compared to Naples. And I hate English targeted resorts.

I really didn"t get that feeling when I was there, maybe it has changed. There was one english bar I remember, avoided at all costs though.

Didn"t see any of that either Adam, my experience was the opposite and found loads of great Italian restaurants and bars to spend my time in. Maybe just went in to the town a bit further as I found the area round the station a bit manic with too many shoppers
