Title: ECOAP Wakeboarding.
Post by: Matt D on August 20, 2012, 10:12:06 AM
Not expecting much of a reply to this message :P

I"ve recently taken up wakeboarding (4 weeks ago) and absolutely love it. So, I googled for nearby wake parks in Nottingham, and found this one: http://www.nwscnotts.com/water/water-skiing/ (it says Waterskiing, but they also do Wakeboarding). It"s 6 miles (15 minutes) from DTD.

I"m planning on hitting the park for a couple of hours each morning before the DTD events start. Say, 11am (or even 9am if I can find a session at that time).

Posting up to see if anyone fancies joining me? It"s oarsome (water-based version of "awesome" :P) fun!

I"m a complete beginner myself (may post a link to a Youtube clip of how bad I actually am later) so don"t worry about being crap if you fancy giving it a go :D

In the mornings, I regret that I am previously booked.

Recovering from the previous nights efforts &/or snarfing down a full English in a local hostelry.

Feck it, I"m on holiday, I don"t plan on rising much before noon.

Any time I get near any large body of water all I can hear are cries of..

"Thar he blows" ...or "Oh the poor thing is beached, let"s help him back in the water".

Wakeboard...I"d rather be waterboarded. :)

I was tempted ... very tempted ... then I saw the time it started ... I have only ever managed to get to one APAT Main event on time, so doubt very much I"d have a hope in hells chance of getting here at all.

Must be 50/1 against getting this off the ground Matt !!
Some of us poker players  USED to have energy to burn but
I fear most have us have passed our best "wakeboarding" days.

It was tempting (for about 30 seconds) but then I realised
a, how old I am.
b, water is cold in Nottingham.
c, any time before noon at an APAT event is too early.

Good luck to you & anyone mad enough to join your venture.
We look forward to a full report.

Don"t mind all the ones posting that they"re not going - I"m sure a few will soon appear who want to do it.

I"ve already done water-skiing once in 1987, so should be alright for this. Will there be jumps?

I"d hope so, but I"m not sure. The one I go to in the Cotswolds has jumps. Though I"ve only just mastered standing up, so not quite ready for them yet :)

Will give them a call tomorrow and find out. They do waterskiing and wakeboarding at the same place on the same course.

Just found this: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g1930093-d617239-r135717156-National_Water_Sports_Centre-Holme_Pierrepont_Nottingham_Nottinghamshire_England.html#REVIEWS

Sounds pretty bad, but meh. I"m still up for it :)

Here"s a YouTube video of the place:

Ha! I run an Extreme Sports group in Bristol. The last wakeboarding event I ran we had a 70 year old woman turn up and do it. And she put many of the young"uns to shame!! True story :)

b, water is cold in Nottingham.

You wear a wetsuit. If anything you get too hot, and long for the plunge into the cool depths of the lake! :D

I"ll video MintTrav going over the jumps :P :D :)

Yes :) I"ve not managed a full lap of the lake where I go yet. Video above is my most recent trip and furthest I"ve managed round yet.

I could strap a board to each wheel of my chair  :D.. But I can"t swim so with much regret I must decline this tempting offer. But posting pics and vids of anyone nose diving is fine..

You pretended to zip line in the Vic, now that was epic.

Don"t quote me on this, as I"ve never waterskied (or snowboarded), but I believe it"s something like:

Wakeboarding to Waterskiing is similar as Snowboarding is to Skiing.

I"m going to check the forecast now, but I was thinking Friday early afternoon (1pm > 3pm maybe?), then one other morning before DTD (either Saturday, Sunday, or Monday depending on the weather - will play it by ear). Then, depending on if Monday is a late finish, I might stay Monday night in Notts, and hit the waterpark for a few hours before heading back Tuesday afternoon.

By the way, the place does wakeboarding and waterskiing on the same course and at the same time. So you can choose which to do (it doesn"t have to be wakeboarding).

Edit: Forecast looks like rain, rain, with a dash of rain (of the torrential variety :(). But, I guess you get soaked anyway doing this kind of thing (so the weather makes no difference?). Temp-wise it"s ideal: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2641170

Probably not best to say ""I"d like to see you try"" .... challenge set there and then haha

Although tbf, wakeboarding probably would have been the easier option for me  ;D
