Title: APAT Scottish Amateur Poker Championship 2012
Post by: Chipaccrual on October 12, 2012, 18:14:44 PM
APAT goes North of the Border for some, or home for others, but one thing is for sure, live from 2:30pm on Saturday, APAT's answer to The Proclaimers will be bringing you all the action, thrills and spills from the Alea Casino, Glasgow.

Who will take home the coveted title of APAT Scottish Amateur Poker Champion 2012, and will they resemble a slightly overweight Hollywood actor ?

We can guarantee, they will be WINNING.

Join Matt "You take the high road" McDale and Adam "I"ll take the low road" McSharples as they walk 500 miles, they"re already on their way because they are kings of the road.

Now, how can I squeeze Letter From America into this intro ?

Passing by table 5, I notice a hand where I actually know all the players!

John McMurray has bet 550 on a flop of 6h 5s 3h and GiMac has called. Ben Burnhill Des Duffy overcalls and Shug has value so he calls too!

The turn is the 9s and Burnhill leads for 1600. Shug grimaces but eventually calls and McMurray folds loudly (the dealer puts his cards to one side as John wants to show after the hand). GiMac has a wry smile as he also calls.

The river hits every draw in the world, the 7h. Burnhill checks, and Shug takes his time before betting 2500. GiMac folds pretty quickly and Burnhill has a resigned look on his face as he calls with 9d 8d for the straight. Shug has  10h 9h for the flush though, and rakes in the pot.

McMurray"s hand? Ac  A s

Some of the tables here are a bit on the wee size. e.g. the one below featuring Michelle Gascoine.

It"s so cosy on that table, that Michelle has had to remove her jacket. That"s the first time in APAT history this has happened! Proof below:

Curly just won another nice pot when he turned broadway and Ian McGoldrick managed to fold the river of a K-J-T-Q-4 rainbow board. McGoldrick flashed the 9 and obviously Curly had the Ace.

Grant "Fat Charlie Sheen" Speirs, the defending champion, has about 28k. I asked him how, he said he can"t stop flopping sets and full houses. Davie "ForthThistle" Blacklaw added "just for fun!".

Lucy Amos has trebled up and said it "would be nice bragging rights" if she can outlast Phil TC.

We lose Derek Liddle at the hands of Grant Mushet

5 limpers in a pot before him, Grant joins them with 97o.

Flop 9K6 rainbow.

Derek leads out for half the pot. Grant min-raises on top. Everyone else folds. Derek min-raises Grant back. Grant repays the favour with another min-raise. Derek min-raises one more time, and Grant finally calls.

Turn is a Jack.

Both insta-check

River 7. Derek shoves all in, and Grant calls.

Grant"s two pairs is good enough vs. Derek"s 86o sending Liddle to the rail.

John McMurray on 22k, despite his bad luck with Aces earlier.

He"s been spewing his chips all over the place, like some kind of Uber-Lag though...

Last 4 hands of the level he"s raised with junk each hand, and got beaten off the pot 3 of those times. The 4th time he took the blinds.

Still, 22k versus an average stack of 16,350 is a good place to be at this early stage.

113 111 remain. Blinds will be 100/200 when we return in a couple of minutes.

Lol pls say this is misreported? What?!?!

G-Mac has doubled up to 10k (he was down to a rather small 5k stack) with 55 against AA when he flops his 5. Some check-call wizardry sees him get all the chips in the middle.

Grant Speirs is mounting a serious defence of his title. He just knocked out someone who we think is William Kelly after raising A2dd preflop and shoving the T-5-2 flop. His opponent called with A-K and Grant naturally hit trips on the turn to settle it.

Rodders had 25k when I asked him. Then he found Queens and raised to 725. One of the locals 3-bet to 2200 from the SB and Rodders called. They both checked the A-A-3 flop and the local bet 2500 on the J turn. Rodders called this, then called the 3600 river bet after a 4 peeled off. Queens were good and he now has 33k. He"s sat next to Craig "Zozzy" Dawson who also has around 33k.

Michelle Gascoine is out after getting crippled in a hand with Frank Bailie where she raised Queens and Frank called with A-J. The flop was Jack high and it all went in on a blank turn, but the Irishman rivered another Jack to leave Michelle with shrapnel.

Very next hand she found 7-2 suited and shoved when it was folded to her. The blinds called and although Michelle flopped a 2, both guys had flopped an Ace and it was eventually James Ellis who won the pot, eliminating Michelle in the process.

Big-ish hand on table Speirs / Phil TC (he has recently been moved to this table).

level 9, blinds 300/600 ante 75.

Donald Cummings who is utg flat calls. Folds round to hijack who makes it 2100. Phil TC in the cutoff looks down at  A s Qs. Thinks for quite a while, but eventually folds.

sb folds, bb folds. Donald calls.

Flop: 8h 10h 4d

Donald checks. hijack fires out a bet. utg min raises. hijack jams all in (another 14k-ish). utg calls.

Cards:

utg: Ah 6h
hijack Ad 10c

Turn: 10d

River: Kh

and admist confusion as to who has won the pot, Donald scoops. Is now up to 43k

John Murray loses a 23k pot leaving him a little short stacked (I"d guess about 9k). His QQ getting outdrawn by AJ aipf. (I arrived as the board was being scooped up).

We can confirm we are down to 58 players.

Meanwhile, Mr Ballie Jr. has waited 40 minutes for a club sandwhich, and is not best pleased. He"s marched off to the bar to complain.

At the same time another player departs Table Marked Cards, so now 57 players.

Phil TC has just busted, and with him the hopes of the Stockton Massive as he was the last to go.

He bluff-shoved 99 on an ace high board but his opponent wasn"t folding AJ, although according to Phil "he nearly did!"

Down to 54. There are still 7 levels to play. I think we might just get down to 3 tables by the end.

John Murray back up to 17k, slowly rebuilding after his QQ vs AJo nightmare. The AJ outdrew him by 4 flushing after a pre-flop dingdong raise festival.

With the room measuring just 3 on the International Lumere scale of Brightness (a sunny day is approx. 63 on the same scale) it has been asked if I can take photos sans flash (it"s just too damned blinding at the moment. In my last photo the subject ducked under the table, thinking he was in the path of a large goods lorry).

Lol pls say this is misreported? What?!?!

Nope, from the horses mouth. Though I may have missed out a couple of min-raises to be fair.

WoW..... That’s interesting but I should point out a couple of things. Firstly I can only guess that someone has me confused with another player. Secondly I would not know how to min raise and finally, just for the record, my exit hand was AK which I raised pre flop with one caller and got it all in on an A high flop….. the flop also happened to be all spades and the caller did happen to have another 2 spades. All in all I played as poorly as usual but had a fun day and did not min raise at any point…..    :)

Edit: Just figured out who Grant is.... I got moved from that table very early on so I"m not sure who the min raiser was but I"m guessing he took my place at seat 4..... wish I had stayed at that table.... think I would have done better there ;-)

Grant Mushet has also just eliminated a short stacked local on a 9-8-K-Q-A board with K-Q vs 8-7 suited all in preflop.

Zozzy Craig ships it all in pre-flop with a pair of nines. His opponent calls with Ad Jd. Zozzy gets up, resigned to the fact he is about to be outdrawn...

7h 5x 10h 10d 4h

and Zozzy scoops a 95k pot!

27 minutes to go until the end of the day and some interesting new tables - Rodders has been moved to table Speirs/Zozzy and Shug finds himself sat opposite Ben Burchill and in position to Billy McKay.

Yes :(

We lose last year"s champion Grant Speirs.

Grant shoves all in preflop with 77 for 29k. He"s called by the AA of Jonathan Bannerman which holds. In a strange quirk of fate Grant knocked Jonathan out in this event last year, so the favour has been repaid... 12 months to the day. Spooky!

There"s 8 minutes left of level 13. After which time we"ll be posting up everyone"s chip count for you.

Superb day gang, loved table 2 throughout with a great bunch of regulars and locals, as well as the unknown soldier who thought it was ok to take his mate"s seat around level 5, when his mate had disappeared into the ether half an hour earlier  :D

Cheers to everyone for their support, wish i"d been able to do the double, but alas, the wheels pretty much ground to a halt after Craig Dawson decided to join us  :P. Our blind v blind confrontation almost saw me exit much earlier. I managed to claw my chips back up to around 50k for a while but never really got going again.

Well done to everyone who made day 2 and good luck to everyone I know still in. Busted out by Jonathan Bannerman"s AA and to be honest wouldn"t grudge him after having a few skirmishes with him at last year"s FT. A very likeable guy with a good game, who was unlucky to finish 4th in 2011. He"ll no doubt put my chips to good use tomorrow.

Is John McMurray MintTrav in a kilt or is there 2 of them?

MintTrav in a kilt. Matt will be happy that someone noticed!

Was kinda hoping for a John Murray v John McMurray HU for comedy updates  ;D ;D ;D

TBF this didn"t help the all day confusion:

Today"s runners and riders:

...

Table 5:
1. Paul Mchenry
2. James Allan
3. Ben Burnhill
4. George Mackenzie
5. Huge Cairnie
6. John McMurray
7. Thomas Clark
8. Gordon Mcarthur
9. Terence Tochel

...

Table 13:
1. Kevin Harvey
2. Craig Denham
3. Robert Stewart
4. Gary Palmer
5. Gerald Thomas
6. Colin Telfer
7. Frank Bailie
8. Paul Mcsherry
9. John Murray

All the interchangeable Murray and McMurray talk plus the above I genuinely believed they were two different people.

Helen Godfrey has doubled through Shug Cairnie when her A-Q won the race against Shug"s J-J all in preflop on a 7-Q-A-3-2 board.

Ben Burnhill is like a yo-yo. Firstly he doubled up Donald Cumming when Donald"s Queens easily held against Ben"s Eights. He then 4-bet shoved over the top of a Grant Mushet 3-bet with A-Q. Mushet held A-K but Ben sucked out on the 8-Q-5-5-7 board to take the pot and stack up 80k.

Alas, we lose John (Mc)Murray.

Mid position limps. Late Pos Neil Rankine raises to 11k. John Murray in the cutoff, looks down at JJ and ships for 45k. Mid-pos folds. Neil calls with KK.

The board runs out: Qh 3d Ks Qd 3h.

Mathew Lind has doubled through Graham Cornell.

I joined then hand with the money flying all in on a 2c A s 6c flop, with Lind holding Jc 10c for the flush draw, and Cornell had Ad Qd. Instant service on the turn 5c and the irrelevant river was the 6d, sending the 100k pot heading in the direction of Lind.

Stuart Fitzsimmons had grinded up another 20k since the previous big hand, but he"s just exited in a sickener.

Simple preflop all in"s...well you do when Alan Horsburgh has K-K and Stuart had A-A. However, in a trend we"ve seen in here over the 2 days, the Aces never held as Horsburgh flopped a set and held on the T-K-3-4-6 board.
Title: Re: APAT Scottish Amateur Poker Championship 2012

Billy McKay was left with around 20k after the Shug hand above and shipped it with Kc Ks a couple of hands later. Shug called with 8c 8h and managed to spike a set on the 5c 2d 4h 8s Qd board to send McKay to the rail in 23rd.

Grant Mushet is, somehow, out.

He shoved all in with A-T but ran into Steven Tracey"s A-K and got no help on the K-5-8-9-J board. Tracey and Mushet had been battling all day and when the chips were counted, Tracey had a small amount more which sent Mushet to the rail.

Eck has just bust with A-J no good vs Q-Q.

Big hand from table Burnhill.

Graeme Cornell goes all in utg for 12k. Helen Godfrey calls from button. Alan Horsbrough and Ben Burnhill both call too from sb and bb.

4 see the flop of:

6c 10h Qc

Alan leads out for 30k. Ben and Helen both fold.

Cards on their backs.

Alan: TT

Graeme announces he needs runner, runner, and flips a pair of fives.

Turn 3d , River 9s

and it"s all over for Graeme who leaves us in 19th place.

We are now down to 18 players and the final 2 tables (and ranking points). Level 16, blinds 3000/6000, ante: 600.

Average stack: 100,800. Will go and get a few counts now.

Shug: A s Qs
James: 9h 9c
Paul: Kh Ks

You are such a bok.

In the last hand before the break, Alan Horsburgh limped UTG. Ben Burnhill shoved 35k from mid position and Russell Skimington shoved 50k from the SB. Horsburgh snapped both off with the inevitable Aces - he was that eager he called before Craig Dawson in the BB had folded!

Alan: AA
Ben: 98
Russell: TT

The Aces held on the 6-5-8-K-4 board to propel Alan into the chiplead and reduce us to 15 players left - with 12 paid...

The unlucky bubble-boy today is Shug, who has made a lot of fans here this weekend in Glasgow, but alas just failed to make the money.

All in utg with 7s 7d, Neil Rankin shoves all-in over the top with his Ad 10d.

Board: Ks 3h 10c 10h Qc

Ian Rankin raises from small button. Jon Little with only 12k back after paying the 8k big blind has to call with 56o.

Ian"s 88 remains the best hand after the board is dealt, meaning we lose Jon in 11th. Jon takes home £140 for his efforts.

We had a rash of exits here and the internet went down!

Now on the final table.

Donald Cumming exited in 12th, no hand details but Rodders was the beneficiary.

John Little exited in 11th, Matt has the details above.

Jonathon Bannerman busted in 10th when he was left with 200 chips after a massive pot with Steven Tracey. That went all in next hand and Craig Dawson rivered a flush to set up our final table.

Steve Tracey raised to 22k UTG and Rodders called from the SB. They saw a 7c 6h 10c board and Rodders check-called a 28.5k bet. On the 2c turn, Rodders checked and Steve bet 48k. Rodders pretty quickly went all in for 135k effective and Steve went into the tank. He eventually called and found out the hand was over...Tracey"s Kc Qc defeating Rodders" Js Jh.

Roderick - 200k
Tracey - 300k

Grant Mushet is, somehow, out.

He shoved all in with A-T but ran into Steven Tracey"s A-K and got no help on the K-5-8-9-J board. Tracey and Mushet had been battling all day and when the chips were counted, Tracey had a small amount more which sent Mushet to the rail.

Eck has just bust with A-J no good vs Q-Q.

Gutted to have busted out. Should"a held back. Ahkwell eh! Had a great weekend, freindliest bunch of folks I"ve played with. Looking forward to playing another APAT Tournie =)

Alan Horsbrough limps utg. Steve Roderick calls from small blind, and Steve Tracey checks in big blind.

Jh 5d 10s

Steve R checks in the dark. Steve Tracey leads out for 45k and Alan calls. Steve R folds.

Both check the 7d turn.

The river is 8c.

Steve Tracey checks. Alan bets 90k.

After a 7 minute dwell, Steve Tracey folds (KK). Alan tells us he turned the straight.

Please can you reserve me a seat as well. I am in Ireland for the week before hand and don"t get back to Prestwick till half 1 on the Sat, so it is highly unlikely I"ll be there for the start.  If I arrange for someone to pay my entry on the day, will be ok and I can just blind out for first 30 mins/hour maximum?

Rodders raises to 50k from button. Alan 3-bets to 145k..., but was a dirty string bet, so only counted as 110k.

Rodders takes a sharp intake of breath.. but, even though his pot odds have increased nicely, still elects to fold. "Nice bet" he states. "No it bloody wasn"t :)" is Alan"s reply.

This is true. Peter"s strategy appears to be to ladder as much as possible - it"s worked so far today and with the aggression of both Rodders and Alan, he has a good chance if he continues to run well during the important hands.

James Allen just eliminated an unknown gentleman with 8-8 vs A-J all in pre. James flopped a set which was needed as the flop was 8 high!

Grant Mushet has also just eliminated a short stacked local on a 9-8-K-Q-A board with K-Q vs 8-7 suited all in preflop.

Just back from the casino,I only live 10 minutes away but for obvious reasons I stayed back for a few celebratory drinks! Thanks to all of the APAT guys & the Alea for a great tournament, aside from the new variation of poker called "Poker in the Dark" it was a great tournament. Thanks for everyone"s well wishes, tho at one point I thought I was gonna start cheering on Rodders as well :-) Thanks especially to Grant who I wouldn"t have been playing yesterday without & Andy for all his forum support. It"s a bit of a cliche & I"m not saying the money isn"t nice but as someone who has followed APAT from the start & played in a number of these, the Gold Medal means so much more than any sterling :-D Off to bed with it under my pillow!

Thanks all, Alan Horsbrough/Horseborough/Horsesbother ;-)

p.s Look out for Super Blind/Super River poker. Some gents know what I"m taking about but it"s definitely coming to a cardroom near all of us!!

p.p.s Grant, budget cuts meant there was no trophy this year so get that 1 replaced with a 2 & send the "2012" trophy my way ;-)

What a great Tournament yet again from Apat. Enjoyed it immensely.
I made a few more friends. Rodders and his Crew great fun.
I got on well with Alan after meeting him for the first time , and yes Alan even before you reached the final table you said to me wouldn"t it be great if I could go around saying

"My name is Alan Horsburgh and I am the Scottish Amateur Poker Champion"

Another great APAT, congrats to the medal winners and all those that cashed.

Great work by Matt and Adam, watching the chap jump from 127,000ft on Matt's laptop was amazing.

Good to catch up with the usual crowd, it had been far too long !

Massive congratulations to Alan. For me the best player won and it was a great game. I cam believe I didn"t super river you in the sitngo though. Let us know how the Genting goes when you play it.

It was a real pleasure to meet you and play that game.

Congratulations to everyone who played, cashed or made the medals in Glasgow on the weekend.

We now move online, with the start of the Scottish Poker Online Series.  If you played on the weekend, you"ve already picked up at least a point towards the player of the series.

Click below for all the details of tonight"s first event and the schedule for the week.

Alan Horsburgh (whose name I have spelt incorrectly all day, and who is H-Man81 on the APAT forum)... finishes 1st for £2,285, a Genting Main Event seat, and an APAT Gold Medal!

Brilliant stuff, well played and to Peter and Precious too.

Signed up to your forum last night after dealing/TD"n the event over the weekend.

Was a pleasure to be involved over the weekend, good bunch of folk involved who played the game in good spirits. Some good laughs at the tables over the weekend. Great atmosphere overall.

Congrats to the medalists and cashers. Well done to Alan for winning the event, solid through-out and a worthy winner.

Jack

p.s. apologies for the lighting issues

Helen Godfrey raises to 35k from the button. Alan Horsbrough asks for a count. Helen has 143k behind.

Alan shoves all in...

Helen calls.

Alan: 10h 10c
Helen: 6c 6h

Board: 7d Kh Qd 7s Ac

Helen Godfrey finishes in 6th place for £540

Alan now has a stack of over 900k!
.Thanks to everyone for the support!  Well done to Alan, you had winner written all over you and I was so pleased to see it fulfilled when we arrived back home last night.

Looking at my watch at 7pm and thinking of the 4hr drive we had to get back home to Leeds last night, I felt I had to get things moving a bit quicker and decided to make a stand against the over-shove to either make a timely exit or get chipped up to make a late night journey worthwhile!  More than happy with the result having started the day with less than 10BB and surviving getting it in bad on most of my showdowns!  Sorry, I think we left without saying bye to many people, but everyone had dispersed on the break and we just headed straight off.

Big thanks to Michelle and her staff at Alea who were brilliant without exception and did their utmost to overcome the twilight conditions indoors.

Will use a couple of my Scottish £20"s to play some of the online series this week, although my online results don"t live up to the standard of my live ones unfortunately!

You"re more than welcome mate, and I"m sure if I"d switched the tickets and the seats were the other way round you"d still have won it  ;)

No joy with the trophy, that"s a real shame  :( No way you"re getting mine though, would mean I"ll need to go polish it first  :P

"My name is Grant Speirs and I am the EX Scottish Amateur Champion"  ;D

Enjoy every minute of it mate, thoroughly deserved win  8)

Alan Horsbrough limps utg. Steve Roderick calls from small blind, and Steve Tracey checks in big blind.

Jh 5d 10s

Steve R checks in the dark. Steve Tracey leads out for 45k and Alan calls. Steve R folds.

Both check the 7d turn.

The river is 8c.

Steve Tracey checks. Alan bets 90k.

After a 7 minute dwell, Steve Tracey folds (KK). Alan tells us he turned the straight.

He called the 90K bet Matt, not just my name you got wrong in these posts  ;) And I did turn the straight  :D As you can tell I"m re-reading the days events!

Hi Leigh,

Please can you reserve me a seat as well. I am in Ireland for the week before hand and don"t get back to Prestwick till half 1 on the Sat, so it is highly unlikely I"ll be there for the start.  If I arrange for someone to pay my entry on the day, will be ok and I can just blind out for first 30 mins/hour maximum?

Thanks

Alan Horsburgh

Alan, you are specifically not allowed to play in this event. Sorry and all that but you"re just too good.

C"mon Alan :)

Your original post was definitely some sort of reverse mystic bok Andy and for that I can only thank you greatly  ;D

Welcome to APAT "Uncle" Jack. Couldn"t of done it without you! Thanks for running/dealing and most importantly the banter, made what are always enjoyable tournaments even more enjoyable.  I"ll see you again in the Alea soon and at my mum"s for dinner next week  ;)

Thanks Rodders, was a pleasure to meet you and that final table was one of, if not the most enjoyable/interesting live poker I"ve played (maybe wasn"t thinking that when that Jack hit mind you ;-)  Was just a great battle back and forth and throughly enjoyed it. Congrats again to you on another medal, tremendous record and doesn"t really need me to echo the sentiments of all that the Gold will arrive to complete the set at one point.  Good to get a few drinks after as well and already worried plain old "normal" Hold em is going to be so boring after Super Hold Em! Take care and good luck in Stoke

ooops lol. It was such a long dwell that I must have fallen asleep, and missed the call :D

Congrats again on the win, and thanks for the pintage after :)

For the Genting Seat, all you have to do is pick an event (next year if you can"t make this year) and give one of us (me, Des, Leigh) a shout, and we"ll stick you in it.

Thanks Matt, I would have loved to have played Sheffield if I was able to. I"ll wait till schedule is announced for next year and let you guys know.  Though since there was no trophy this year think it"s really only fair you buy me in to the Genting Main Event instead. Just think of the APAT exposure when I take that down as well  ;)

Thanks again for everything, was good to get a few pints after and hope your early morning rise was not too painful!

Played the alea glasgow at the back end of 2010 in a decent sized comp and everyone was complaining about the lighting back then. So I wouldn"t be holding my breath on that one!

Great to see some positive comments about the casino staff, sounds like the alea treated us very well.

Yeah lighting is and will probably remain an issue I"m afraid. I keep trying to get lights put in but to no avail! Frustrating and a bit romantic in some spots! Lol. X
