Hi all
Just been chatting to Steve Redfern on facebook re: Pingpong.
I"ve only recently started playing (I played quite a bit on holiday last month, though that was the first time I"d picked up a bat since I was a kid - and then I only played a handful of times). Therefore I am pretty much "total beginner" standard, though it seems to be a game where you can quickly pick the basics up.
So... quite fancying a game, I"ve come up with the:
The Official APAT* UK Table Tennis Championships, to be held on Sunday 27th January in Luton!
This is the morning of the 2nd day of the Team Event, and will be arranged to allow plenty of time to get back to your hotel and have a shower/get changed etc. before day 2 starts. (this might mean a "on the table" time of 10am (again depending on number of runners), so a relatively early start for some of you!...).
Entry will be £5 or £10 each (depending on number of runners), and will pay for the tables, bat hire (though feel free to bring your own if you have one), and a funky trophy for the winner. Any remaining cash left over will be paid out to the 2 finalists on a 65%/35% split.
Just getting a list of people who are interested at this stage. If there"s enough, I"ll look in to hiring tables, sort out a format (mini league/knock-out) etc. etc.
So, if you want to play, add your name to this list. Please also mention roughly how good you are, how long you"ve played for, and any other relevant PingPong info etc.
Update: Blimey, this is proving to be a lot more popular than I anticipated. I"m therefore limiting it to 12 16 entries to start with. (may increase this later once I"ve thought of a format to accomodate everyone!). However, still stick your name on a Reserve list if we have the initial 12 16, and you"ll get to play if there are any dropouts, or (more likely) I work out a way so that everyone can play :) (we may have to find a nearby place with several tables!).

Lol at "ping pong"
Kinda reminds when my dad calls a radio a "wireless".. Or a dress a "frock"
Like the wake boarding in Nottingham, gonna have to give this one a miss,
Although if you get to many "pings" and not enough "pongs" give me 12 hours notice I can help you out nothing a good baked bean casserole can"t sort out ;D

Yes please, this is a poker format I reckon I can beat Steve Redfern at.
Count me in.
-
ha, this is proving a little more popular than I thought it might.
So, I"m going to limit the number of entrants to 12 to start with, or we"ll be at the venue all day!...
-
In dependent on if I can actually get there on the Sunday morning.
Never played the game before in my life but I have to be better than Stu Ward.
-
Following on from my silver medal in the APAT Wakeboarding Championship, I"ll obviously be keen to have a go at this, so long as the clubs and safety equipment are provided.
-
I would be up for this, think I am the 12th, only experience being played using bookends on parents dining room table with a golf ball, should be enough I would imagine.
-
please count me in i will dig out the old bat ;D
-
sorry never played the game before hmmm of course i meant cue ;D
-
haha :) stuck you down Brian.
We"ve now 12, so I"ve increased max players to 16.
The format I"m thinking of is:
4 leagues of 4 players, everyone plays each other in their league in a round-robin format. The top 2 of each league (so 8 players) go through to the knockout stages.
8 players (Quarter Final) > 4 players (Semi Final) > 2 players (Final).
For the Round-Robin/QF/SF stages we"ll play "Best of 3", then moving to "Best of 5" for the final. Note: It"s first to 11 points wins a game, and you can win on your or your opponents serve (you each get 2 serves, then swap). To make it easier to remember, whoever loses the first game serves first in the second game and so on. (we"ll toss a coin for initial server and starting end, and swap ends after each game).
Right, time to do the math...
Based on 16 players, we"ll be playing:
6 matches in each of 4 leagues = 24 matches * "best of 3" matches = (average of 2.5 games a match) 60 games.
A game takes 4 minutes on average, so 60 x 4 = 4 hours(!). However, if we can commandeer 2 tables, that means 2 hours.
The rest of the tourney will take a maximum of:
4 x QF (12 games = 48 mins / 2 tables = 24 mins)
2 x SF (6 games = 24 min / 2 tables = 12 mins)
1 x F (5 games = 20 min / 1 table = 20 min)
24+12+20 = 56 mins.
Total tourney time = 2hrs 56mins. Start at 10am, finish at 1pm. (that"s cutting it a bit fine with any inevitable delays, so I suggest a disgustingly early "first game" time of 9.30am!!, to ensure everyone gets back to day2 of the APAT Team Champs in time).
Note: This is just an initial format idea, so is subject to change.

You could just come for the table-tennis. Quite a long way for potentially 3 games though... unless you"re a pro on the sly?...

You could just come for the table-tennis. Quite a long way for potentially 3 games though... unless you"re a pro on the sly?...
Depends - it might be worth it. How much is the prize-pool?
-
11-0 = 21.8 secs per point
11-10 = 11.42 sec per point
The average being 16.62 per point, giving you around 15 point game as an average 11-4.
4 minutes seems short per game when you consider,
chat/banter inbetween
mis-serves
ball behind player fetching
what is the score enquires
final league postions
QF set up games
just my thoughts. Great idea though!
-
Thanks Waz.
I based the timings on a match I played vs a mate on Tuesday night...
We ended up 13-11 in games, and it took about 75 mins. Most games were very close. That gives just over 3 minutes a game, so I rounded it to 4minutes in my calculations to be generous.
I think most games will end up 2-0 to one player, as there may be some difference in skills. Also, a lot of points can last just 2 or 3 shots, or sometimes even a foul serve - there is no "second serve".
But... I may ditch the "best of 3" for the Round Robin stages and make them either:
a) "best of 2 games" and award 2 points for a win, and 1 point for a draw.
or
b) make it just a 1 game match. (this will speed things up considerably, but might also mean some players don"t feel they"ve played enough...)
Hard to please everyone, and fit the game into a 3 hour window. (I think 10am to 1pm is about the best time to run this, 9.30am start is just a bit toooo early)...
-
(I think 10am to 1pm is about the best time to run this, 9.30am start is just a bit toooo early)...
I"ll just stop off there on my way back from Day 1
-
In other news, this is now sold out.
However, if you want to play, don"t despair I"m running a Reserve List. Stick your name down for that here, and if a player either drops out or doesn"t turn up, you"re in!
-
Enjoy it, will be lots of fun I"m sure. didnt meant to question the timings, (clearly you"d thought about it)
-

No, it"s totally cool and appreciated. I"ve never run anything like this before, so feedback/input defintiely welcome!
As posted above, I may have to change structure/timings to make sure it all finishes on time, and depends on how many tables we can get. If we could get 4 in one place, that would make the whole thing massively quick :) But, if we can only get one, then a major format rethink will be required! :D
-
Would prefer best of 3 in the round robin as some of us will take a while to dust off the cobwebs!!
9.30am start is fine as long as the stockton c*ck is in my group, since he"ll defo have a hangover ;D

As a long term early bird I"d be happy to start at 8 if this helps

Hi Wayne, I"ll put you down as first reserve. It"s 99% likely that some players won"t turn up (hangovers), so I reckon turn up on the day and you"ll almost certainly get to play.

Aye, it"s just that it"s looking like BO3 this early in the tourney is going to make the whole thing 3 > 3.5 hours. Still, if we finish at 1.30pm that gives an hour to get back to hotel and then to casino = doable. And of course, everyone who hasn"t qualified for the QFs can head off after the RR round if they like.
An alternative format would be:
2 leagues of 8 players each.
Everyone plays 2 games vs each other. 1 point for a win. 0 for a loss.
Top 4 from each league progress to QFs.
I"ve got to dash out now, but if someone could work out how many games that is in total, I"d very much appreciate it! :) (if not, I"ll do it on my return later).

Ha, there"s no way it"s that many :)
Each game is one set, so it"s more like 48 isn"t it?...
edit: Have just borrowed a pen and paper and have done the math... I think it"s 88?... If we say just 1 game that"s 44....

ooops, you"re right. No idea how I ended up with 44...
So... if we have 2 leagues of 8 players each, and everyone in each league plays just 1 set against each other player in their league, then I make it:
7+6+5+4+3+2+1 games = 28 games x 2 leagues = 56 sets x 4 mins a set = 224 minutes = eeeek. Divide that by 2 tables = 112 minutes.
Then all the other shizzle as before:
4 x QF (12 games = 48 mins / 2 tables = 24 mins)
2 x SF (6 games = 24 min / 2 tables = 12 mins)
1 x F (5 games = 20 min / 1 table = 20 min)
24+12+20 = 56 mins.
Total time: 112 + 56 = 168 minutes. 2hrs 48mins.
That"s a saving of 8 minutes vs. having 4 leagues, and everyone playing best of 3 matches through the whole tourney... Tough call..
The advantage of having just 2 leagues, is that it makes it a lot easier to organise with the inevitable no shows...
-
All assuming just 1 table? So the key is finding somewhere with more than 1.
Vauxhall sports centre is a pretty big place......
Still prefer to play 3 games against each player so 4 leagues of 4 is my preference.

Think you"ll find most will have already checked out of the hotel on Sunday morning, so won"t need to head back for shower/change - that will have to be done at the Leisure Centre

I would put my name down for this but seeing as I can"t even see what"s right in front of me ... like stairs, banisters, big TD Desks, coffee tables etc ... then seeing a small white ball going at speed really isn"t happening ;D

Matt....seems u have 18 players interested. No need to exclude anyone.
2 leagues of 5 and 2 leagues of players.
4-player league = 6 games in total (round-robin). That is 6 x 10 mins = 60 mins.
5-player League = 10 games in total. That is 10 x 10 mins = 100 mins.
Run these side-by-side on 2 tables
Then top 2 from each group into Q/Finals = 4 games on 2 tables = 20 mins
S/Finals (best of 3) = 30 mins max
Final (best of 3) = 30 mins max.
4 hours MAXIMUM and this can be cut down if you only have best of one at the end if time is tight.
Some games wont last 10 mins either.
Also, doing it this way, the 5-man groups can be cut to 4 if you have no-shows.
I dont mind running it for you if you wish. Just seems a shame to limit it to 1`6 players when it is easy to get around it.
If you can only get one table then run it as 2 knockout sections of 9 with top 2 from each meeting up in the semi finals( also easy to run :) )
Hope this is of help.

lol :) It"s still 16 atm :)
BO3 pleeeeeeeeease to justify getting up at the crack
If we have e.g. 4 leagues of 4 players each, then it will definitely be BO3. Meaning you get to play between 6 and 9 sets in the knock-out stages.
If we"ve 2 leagues of 8 players each, then it would just be BO1. You"d still get to play a guaranteed 7 sets, so not that much difference, and could be easier to organise that way.
Haven"t decided the best way yet... Though, I"m swaying towards 2 leagues as makes it easier to organise when people don"t turn up, and makes sense if we can get 2 tables (both tables will be constantly in use, with less sitting around waiting).
-
I am bringing some sort of alcohol with me. You have been warned :p
-

I"ve been trying to figure that one out, but you"ve got me stumped. Won"t both tables be constantly in use during the preliminary rounds either way? And if you play roughly the same number of games, why would there be less sitting around waiting? Am I missing something?
-
Well if it is only 16 it looks like I am missing something.
-
Well if it is only 16 it looks like I am missing something.
That"s not the final decision, just that atm it"s 16.
There is 100% bound to be some drop-outs before the game anyway, and a bunch of no-shows on the day itself. There"s already been one drop-out, that I need to knock off the list above.
-
I think you are under-estimating the amount of time that will be taken up by fetching errant balls,
arguing discussing rules/formats/playing order/etc. Squeezing into a 3 hour timeframe is overly ambitious imo - you need to have more contingency room..... create your structure to aim for two hours, and it will probably run for three.
If the first stage is a round robin, there really is no need for BO3 games.... BO1 is sufficient. To alleviate the perceived negative impact of BO1, you could switch the games to 15 points per game with 3 serves per handover, as opposed to 11 points with 2 serves. When you reach the KO stage, you then switch to 11 point games with 2 serves, and change to BO3
-
How"s about:
Going back to... 4 leagues of 4. Each player plays 2 sets vs. each other. = 3+2+1 = 6sets x 2 = 12sets. x 4 leagues = 48sets. 1 point per set you win.
48sets x 4 mins = 192mins / 2 tables = 96 mins.
Then add QF/SF/F:
4 x 2.5 (10) + 2 x 2.5 (5) = 15 sets x 4 mins = 60 mins / 2 tables = 30 mins + Final 2.5 sets x 4 mins = 10 mins.
96 + 70 = 166 mins.
We could arrange it so that I referree all the games on table 1 that I"m not playing in (and make sure everyone plays fast, knows what the score is, doesn"t argue etc.), whilst someone else does the same for table 2.
There are sure to be no-shows, so this gives us plenty of time imo.
Just waiting for Luton TableTennis association to get back to me with a venue suggestion.

Sounds like a good compromise to me

Someone from VRC is going to get back to me with prices, number of tables, etc.
Will keep you posted.

Vauxhall sports centre is a pretty big place......
Tried to save you some time ;)

lol, ooops! Thought I"d heard that name somewhere before!... :-*
Right, I"ve just heard from Vauxhall Recreation Centre, and they"ve offered the following (it"s all they have availability-wise):
4 tables from 10.05am to 11.55am.
So, I"m just going to rejig everything now so we make most use of those tables.
-
Okay, it"s possible, but everyone is going to have to turn up on time and be ready and in position to play at 10.05 exactly!...
Here"s the Math:
Group stages
4 groups of 4 = 16 players.
Everyone plays Best of 3.
6 matches per group x 2.5 average sets per match = 15 sets per group.
60 sets in total over group stage (4 groups of 15 sets).
Time: 240 minutes (60 sets x 4 mins per set).
Total time: 60 minutes for group stages (240 minutes divided by 4 tables)
Top 2 from each group stage progress to:
Quarter Finals
8 players left = 4 matches to play
4 matches * 2.5 sets (on average) = 10 sets.
Time: 40 minutes (10 sets x 4 mins per set).
Total time: 10 minutes for Quarter Finals (40 minutes divided by 4 tables)
QF winners progress to:
Semi Final
4 players left = 2 matches to play
2 matches * 2.5 sets (on average) = 5 sets.
Time: 20 minutes (5 sets x 4 mins per set)
Total time: 10 minutes for Semi Finals (20 minutes divided by 2 tables)
SF winners progress to:
Final
2 players left = 1 match
1 match * 5 sets max. (we"ll play best of 5 in the final) = 5 sets.
Time: 20 minutes (5 sets x 4 mins per set)
Total time: 20 minutes for Final
Overall time:
60 + 10 + 10 + 20 = 100 minutes = 1 hour 40 minutes. We have the tables booked for 1 hour 55 minutes, so that gives us a small window for anything over-running.
-
Though, it might make more sense to run the group stages to:
Group stages
4 groups of 4 = 16 players.
Everyone plays 2 sets versus each other (1 point per set won).
6 matches per group * 2 sets per match = 12 sets per group.
48 sets in total over group stage (4 groups of 12 sets).
Time: 192 minutes (48 sets * 4 mins per set).
Total time: 48 minutes for group stages (240 minutes divided by 4 tables)
That would make the total time:
48 + 10 + 10 + 20 = 88 minutes = 1 hour 28 minutes. (gives us more time in the event of delays, which are probably pretty likely?)....
Will make a final decision and post on a new thread (this one is way too long now! :) ) later today.
-
Entry fee is going to be £10 per player, and will be spent thus:
£70 hire of tables.
£30 special trophy for winner.
£40 winner of tournament.
£20 second place.
I wonder if Des will put any added value in? :D
-
Think your second option of 2 sets per match, with one point per set, is a far more viable option given the time restriction, and the definite need to reserve contingency time. (delays will happen, it will not run smoothly all the way through).
I presume the draw will be entirely random for the four groups, and that each group will umpire/score for itself - what happens if a group contains four novices, none of whom is able to umpire?
£70 for table hire? Hope they"re gold plated and in private rooms!! ;)
-
This is starting to get serious, £40 winner + £30 cup, thought this was a bit of fun to fill the time in, will have to start training now. First of all no drinking on Saturday night. :D
If I Don't get in the 16, I will still come and umpire. Trouble is I don't know the rules; the last time I played it was first to 21, each having 5 serves
-

Aye, and that"s a special deal they"re doing for us. The normal cost is £12.15 per table per hour Strewth!... (http://www.vauxhallrecreation.co.uk/sports_price.php)
In Bristol, the tables are £5 to £8 an hour, depending on where you play.

Aye, I"ll do a draw on Day1 of APAT Luton. Will get everyone to pick a card from a deck, which will determine the group they"re in. Will also collect tenners off everyone then. No show = no refund!

Are they supplying bats?
and balls?

Are they supplying bats?
and balls?
Aha, that"s a very good point! I"ll ask (I expect there"s a further cost involved too - will ask if they can chuck all that in for free).

I can probably bring a couple of decent "spare" bats, and probably have four balls kicking about too. Won"t have 8 bats though.
-
I"ve got 2 bats + 5 balls.
So, that"s 4 bats + 9 balls so far.
Any more for any more?
Also, can I have 2 more volunteers for Umpiring duties please? (I"ve already got 2, but need one per group - they won"t be in the random draw).
-

We"ve had a drop-out, so you"re in :)
Rules are simple:
2 serves each, first to 11. If you get to 10-10 then it"s just 1 serve each.
Toss a coin to see who serves first. The loser of the first game serves 1st in the second match.
Here"s some basic rules: http://www.pongworld.com/more/rules.php .
Just read the "What you need to know to play a fun game of ping-pong"
To simplify things a bit: For this game any serve will be considered "legal" as long as it bounces first on the servers side, then on the opponents side. We won"t bother with the "6 inches" rule (this can make it really difficult for beginners). Note, you don"t need to serve to a certain side of the table (e.g. right/left), just getting it over the net is fine (as long as it bounces before the net before going over).
-
1 bat, 5 balls
Surely we can self umpire? With a restricted set of rules it"s basically about whether the ball hits the table or not, and whether Matt W is too loud/abusive/drunk. Now if the umpire fetches the balls, then happy days :D
-
It"s surprisingly easy to forget the score when you"re playing and doing the scores at the same time. I think it would move things along at the hectic pace they need to be, if we had 1 person who has played before in each of the 4 leagues.
As for bats, sports centre say they will provide "basic" bats to make up any shortfall.

Am I in?

There"s been 1 drop-out, so you"re first reserve: http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13062.0
I"d say that means there"s a pretty good chance of playing if you turn up.

best take me out and give my place to Brian, Matt, Im not guaranteed to be there at the minute

Some of us haven"t played for over 25 years.
Anyone who has been practicing should be penalised.

It"s going to be a stretch to get it finished on time as it is (we only have 2 hours max.)

How big is it? I"m a bit concerned at having to carry two trophies on the underground.

Can you take my name off this list please?
Sorry.

If anyone staying at Days Inn is driving or wants to split a cab to this please let me know.
-
Collected money, and have drawn cards for everyone except for:
Adrian Long
Cecilia Sparke
Brian Harland
Nazar Wrigley
John Laight (due to a dropout you"re now playing - can someone tell him please).
Please can those grab me in a break or when I"m walking past the table to pay your tenner, and pick a card for the draw.
-
We"ve had a last second drop out. Can anyone fill the space? Please post here if you can. Thanks..
-
Space filled.
-
Thanks everyone for playing today. Was an awesome event, and ran a lot more smoothly than I thought :)
Did anyone leave at bat at the venue? I picked it up after everyone left, and have it with me. Will bring to next APAT or post back if you PM me your address.
I have a bunch of videos from the event that I"ll upload to Leigh's excellent Live Update thread here: http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13160.0

Thanks for organising this Matt. It was more fun than my results suggest :)
What next? Bog-snorkelling?
-
Yep echo that, thanks Matt.
Nothing worse than the Sunday morning of an APAT weekend - can"t stand hanging around being bored.
-
Thanks Matt for organising this. Woke up Sunday morning wondering what the hell am I doing playing this and although I was crap I really enjoyed it. Obviously it's going to be an annual event.
Suggestion for another Sunday morning activity
POOL

What a great event. WP Matt, genious idea and well organised. Felt good to blast away some 20 year old cobwebs.
Suggestion for another Sunday morning activity
POOL
I ain"t going anywhere near a feckin pool on a sunday morning ;)
-
Thanks everyone :) I thoroughly enjoyed it too, despite being awful!! :)
David, you could tell you definitely had the skills - just a little rusty I think.
Wayne, yep I think I"ll organise an official APAT* Pool tourney for one of the mornings for the WCOAP. Also another pingpong tourney maybe, and a wakeboarding competition :D at the National Watersports Centre there (John Murray won Silver in that event at the ECOAP).
*APAT in this instance stands for Amateur Pool Association & Tour. It should not be confused with any similarly named organisation.
Update: Edited.
