Title: A Journey to the wsop, then Blackpool
Post by: jacklevel06 on July 01, 2008, 21:27:06 PM
Tomorrow i set off on a journey which involves, planes trains and automobiles.A 1 hour drive ,a near 5 hour train ride,a night in london then off to vegas.
Now being a tall ,skinny chap a 10 1/2 hour flight doesn"t appeal to me what so ever, but the chance to play in the wsop main event is every poker players dream
I"m just a recreational player ,i have no dreams what so ever to make a career out of poker. The thing is i just love the game and playing live is what its all about.Staring some one down ,pulling off an outrageous bluff  but most of all just having fun at the table.Untill i joined  apat i had never set foot in a casino ,then a year and 1/2 on im in vegas for the first time.
In the blog i will try and put down the key hands(sorry not in thinkers league),if i last long enough ;D.Hopefully some amusing stories and in general my thoughts on vegas. Finally on my return i get 7 hours sleep then off to Blackpool for the forum challenge.I think i"m getting to old for this carry on.

Good mornig/afternoon/evening (if any one knows what time it is,please post and let me know) from Las Vegas.Sorry for not posting but life is just a blur at the moment.Arrived on thursday and was totally knackered after the so went straight to bed. This was a bad move as i woke at midnight and have been up ever since.Went to watch the las vegas darts yesterday and my plan to stay sober till i played the main event was going well. Then eck phoned and we arranged to meet up.

Met eck and the virgin poker guys in the luxor, including Brian who i knew from the apat events and we decided a small beer was in order. As always with me the small beer turned into a bloody great ,huge beer.Brian got a call to say the punter"s lounge guys were in planet hollywood so we head of to meet them.Meet another 3 guys i know from apat including Graham morilspin and we decide the $70 tournament looks good. After doing my usual of getting loads of chips early i finally bust out when after 2 limpers i push with  kc ts and run into  :as: ah, 9h 9s. tbc

A king and a ten  on the flop put me in front but the ace on the river put me out.Eck and morilspin chop the tournament and my 10% of eck covers my day  :D.
I totally ripped all the punters lounge guys about the forum challenge so i"ve put some extra pressure on us to win .Eck plays today so i"m off to rail him later ,i play on sunday ,i will try to update later on ecks progress but for now i think i will try some sleep.

Well i finally have calmed down enough to put my thoughts down.I was sat at table red 30 in the amazon room and got there early to let battle commence. My table consisted of no one i had seen before but in seat 6 apparently (i was in 4) was Duncan Bell who won the $2500 bracelet earlier in the series.Unlike me i was feeling rather nervous and had a dose of the shakes(or was it the lack of alcohol in my system  :D).I dont want to get involved early but on the button i get  :as: kh and make the standard 3x the big blind bet (50-100 blinds),big blind makes up and on a jack high flop i fire out another 300 ,its called again .The turn brings a flush on the board and we check it down mr bracelet winner shows  td th.So with the blinds i"ve lost 750 chips not what i planned.Next hand i get queens ,standard raise again flop comes king high and we check to the river where matey boy hit two pairs.FFS.At the end of level 1 ,i"m down to 17500.

Wish i knew how to do longer post but any way.LEVEL 2 100-200.Level two was pretty uneventfull as i remember but i had still managed to dwindle my stack to 15500.The dealer called last hand before the break and i find  9c  9d utg ,i flat call and its folded round to the serial table raiser who makes it 800 to go.I call and as every one has gone of for the break there is just us two left at the table. 4s 5c 4h flop and i feel my pair is good but check for some reason,mr raiser fires 1200 into 2400 pot ,i call.Turn is  5d and it goes check, check.River is a blank and i check again so i have the option after i see what my rival does.To my surprise he fires 5000 into a 3600 pot.Looks like a steal to me but calling 5k puts my stack down to 10000,so in typical micky mode i dwell then push them all in.Hes in the tank for ages then says you"ve got the house and folds kings face up .I run out side for a ciggy and check my boxer"s arent full. :D.24k ish at end of level.

Level 3 150-300 Level 3 was fairly uneventfull.Didnt get involved in much and ended up with 26k or there abouts.By this stage the table had found out i was scottish so i was named brave heart or william which led to a funny situation later. So i head off to the dinner break feeling pretty confident and believing i that i could actually play at this level, which wasnt the case earlier on.Meet up with eck and steph who is an internet pro from scotland and we have a liquid dinner.

Level 4 150-300 ,25 ante.Being in a positive mood im looking to build my stack at this level ,iv"e been playing pretty tight so its time to loosen up.There"s 2 short stacks to my right about 5 or 6k each and im looking to get those chips in my stack.About 3 hands into the level i get  ah kh utd and bet 1k,its folded round to big blind who pushes for 4 1/2 more ,i feel i have to call(rightly or wrongly)he turns over  js  jd Flop comes  :as: 5h 9h ,ya beauty he"s drawing to 1 jack, turn is a blank ,river  jc.Fck my life that hurt.im down to 20k.Looking back with the blinds still so low i didnt need to call but i was trying to push on a little at that stage. In the same orbit i get  ah qh and raise ,the other short stack pushes for 5k .I decide to call but i think i was tilting at the time .He shows pocket 9s.First card on flop  :as:,river 9.I cant take this again so leave table and go for a walk.I end level on 15k.

Right people apologies for the lack of updates but i figured if i am going to do some they better start now before i forget what the hell happened.

Disclaimer: Details may be blurry due to what will become obvious.....

Day 1:

Standard flight delayed at gatwick we arrive in vegas staying at the Luxor get checked in and head over to the Rio to register. I forget to lift my passport so will have to come back next day to go through the process (sigh). By now we have been on the go for best part of 30 hours and it is about 9pm vegas time. So we decide to have a beer or two in the Rio. Meet Morlspin, DaMatrix and GamblingGaz (only knowing people by forum names seems a strange world). Anyway a couple of crap lagers later Brian (MCFC on various forums) suggests if i fancy a Guiness we go to O"Sheas so it would be rude not to.

We have a few drinks of the black stuff in O"Sheas and we are down to about 4 guys left. Myself a young lad called Ollie Crawford who won a seat on Virgin, Brian who has came out for 5 days to Rail his mate who he travels to lots of festivals with. His friend is called Stephen Boyd some may know him as the "the Mole" on virgin poker where he plays cash up to the 300/600 euro blind level.

This is Steph:

So this is steph"s first time in Vegas (amazingly he has only been playing a few years) so i decide that on his frst night seeing the Rio (which is pretty tacky even for vegas) and O"sheas (which is a bit of a dump) wasn"t giving him a good idea of the place. I suggest we head over the road to Caeser"s and have a look at the card room etc which are pretty impressive. Arriving at caesers about 10pm (remember how long we have been up here and well on the sauce) some idiot suggests we play the 11pm tourney (ok it was my idea) young Ollie thinks this is a great idea and registers i have second thoughts and decide to sit down at a 1/3 cash game and steph decides to play some 5/10 cash.

At about 2.30am Steph and I are sttod outside the poker room having a ciggie i have ran my $300 up to about $650 and he has increased his $1000 to about $6500. we couldn"t see ollie and figure he has busted so decide to play for about another 1/2 hour and head as we are absolutely shattered and pretty drunk (trust me there is a theme developing here) Can"t remember much about the hands apart from annoying a guy from luton by calling his flop bet with the stupid intention of making a play at him later but actually hitting my gutshot for broadway and he couldn"t lay dowb his 2 pair  :)

Just at that point Ollie appears he has been out of sight at his table and is well chipped up with about 3 tables left. Well it would be rude to leave the guy i mean we have known him for about 8 hours now so we decide we are there till he bursts. We leave Caesers after 5am (gets rather vague here) Ollie has chopped the tourney ($120 buy in btw) for $1k. I cash out over $1k from the 1/3 game and we realise Steph, who was last seen tipping a wee chinese woman $50 at a time to stack his chips when he went for a smoke, wasn"t about. we figure he has gone back to hotel as he was well gone earlier so we head back and find most of them in the bar at the luxor. Steph soon joins us and it turns out a couple of yanks he was playing with took him to a bar but he got a bit wary and left fairly soon. so after more drinks we head to kip after 6am ish  ???

Steph is in the room net to mine and i ask him how he finished up? he is that drunk he pulls out a bundle of notes and asks me to count it. i made it at least $9k so a cool $8k profit first night in vegas..net morning he said he found another grand in another pocket  :D

Right that was day 1 im off for a coffee may come back and try and post some more in a bit but i need to pass the bar to get it and there are people and drink there.....you know how it is.....

Well that was an achievement getting past the bar..

Day 2:

pretty knackered up about 11am Steph and i went to the rio to get me registered. Steph managed to leave his i-phone in the taxi so not a good start. Got registered had no real enthusiasm to play so we had a chilled out day we went to binions as we thought some guys we knew were playing a comp there but couldn"t find them so proceeded to have a few beers and slowly made our way back up to the luxor stopping off at the Wynn for more beers. met the team from virgin in the luxor (and the missus, yes she did actually come too, have only seen her for a couple of hours a day until now, but she is having a lovely chilled out time)

further drinking in bar and we dicide to go to MGM for some cash. Pretty bad idea as everyone isn"t admitting they are knackered so nothing to report think i dropped $40 B we met brian there he made a nice profit and steph came out slightly up. so we head back to hotel and Steph and Brian do there best to initiate me into the newest poker team on the circuit. "You have heard of the Hendon Mob and the Hit Squad, well meet the Glenfiddich Gang!!! Now get that down you!!!" don"t even like whisky but im not rude as you know.

Think we made bed for 6am.

Day 3

this is getting tough here...old memory cells are fading.

Basically we got up, fed and hit the bar tbh. Steph and Brian were due to meet a team from Punter"s Lounge in Blondie"s bar at PH. We waited for MivkyP who was at the Manadalay Bay watching the darts and headed down. it was $10 for a wristband and they gave you a plastic drinking vessel which you coiuld refill for your pleasure for 2 hours at no more cost. They probably didn"t do too well on the profit side of things that day......

This finished about 6pm and we deicided to play the 7pm at PH was a $70 freezout. Chopped it 3 ways with Morlspin who kindly offered the 3 way chop whenit got down to 3 and we went on a break. I gladly accepted as Graeme had a large chip advantage blinds were huge and the missus ahd joined the team who looked like they were having a riot at the paino bar behind the poker room. the other guy who looked like a younger, fatter Paul simon thought for a minute and accepted. They need to have a 1st 2nd 3rd for there records so it was all in next hand and Paul simons AK held even though my Q4 turned a flush draw. Reason for the details there is in case Morlspin tries to tell anyone he won a comp in vegas... ;D

Proceeded to bar, copious amounts of corona then headed back to Luxor and instead of doing the sensible thing and going to bed (I am playing the ME next day) I get a drambuie and head of to the 1/2 game in the Luxor. I proceed to play the most Uber aggressive poker of my life and put most of the table in fear of their life.. :D  ( been spending to much time talking to the mole who plays short handed cash) anyway think i lifted a $300 profit in a couple of hours and headed to bed at 3.30 well slaughtered to get some sleep..

I start the Main event at 12 am so perhaps not the best preparation.

OK day 4 this is going to be short as i haven"t had a drink yet today and it nearly 3pm ffs.

main event: get up feeling like crap, absolutely no idea why reckon it must be something viral... ???

My table is in the Brasilia room which is dissapointing as it doesn"t have the same feel as the amazon room. My table had to my right some young american who i subsequently found out was 3rd in the short handed comp Minieri won. He got his aces busted by AK 3 handed but seemed only slightly annoying which was a bonus. I was in seat 9 (9 handed)

Seat:

1 - Cecilia Nordenstam
(http://gfx.aftonbladet.se/multimedia/archive/00641/cicci_nordenstam_21_641680w.jpg)

2 - random yank
3 - Random turkish guy
4 - American guy who professes to play in WPT. Must have made his money in Software or something as he pretty much stinks a poker.
5 - 21 year old in the full tilt gear called "chad". Spoke in that lazy american drawl and kept talking to Norman Chad and Lon Mcwhateverisnameis as if he knew them when they walked by. Said he read cardplayer a lot and mainly played omaha online but had no idea who the guy sat in seat 6 was. :)
6- Rolf Slotboom
(http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:IYqbvSRkbD7zbM:http://www.pokernews.com/files_en/reporting/blog/47f2c9d72422d.jpg)
7 - old American guy who just wanted to survive
8 Justin Flitz
(http://media.cardplayer.com/image/e/EV31_Justin_Filtz_Large_.jpg)

9 - Some ridiculously hungover Scotsman.
Title: Re: A Journey to the wsop, then Blackpool
Post by: Eck on July 07, 2008, 23:38:13 PM
First hand of day Chad limps folded to BB (Random Yank) who raises to 300 (50/100)
fop comes  4h 4s 5c RY bets Chad calls, Turn  qc, RY bets Chad calls, River  qh RY bets Chad reraises (forget all bet sizes but reraise was i think 5k on top of RY 2k bet) RY calls he has the Full house with a Queen, Chad flips  4c 4d  :o

First 3 levels (2 hour levels) had very little cards and felt like kack so played not much nursed stack up to heady heights of about 24k. Had cultivated a rock like image so any action i made was given respect except by random yank who called a few raises but passed to the c-bet and "chad", who was putting me slowly on life tilt with his drawl and general Americanness, who called a raise from and led into me on a jack high board for a bet of about 800 in 2nd level but soon disappeared when i repopped to 3k. i figured finding out if my tens were good and what my image was like. Chad then went up in my estimation by informing the table i had only played like 5 hands in 4 hours cementing my rock like image with those not paying attention. This helped immensely in allowing increased nicking.

Was fairly dry on the card relied on reraising Justin when i had ay reasonable holiding. Justin was raising pretty much most pots folded to him. Then in the 3rd level (i think - was a long day and i was struggling by on one egg benedict that i had managed to eat at breakfast) I looked down to see ks kc and as i go to lift some chips to raise i hear the dealer say "oops Misdeal" (was the first of the day). sigh.......

Level 4 (5 levels per day)

Chad limps UTG folds al way round to BB (Clifford something the incredibly bad poker pro) Clifford checks Chad bets takes the pot and show queens. This induced Rolf to ask why he limps utg with queens and chad slurrs out that he expected one of us guys to come over the top and he was going to repop. which made us then question him about the possibility of commiting his stack to a raiser who may have him beat in a deep stacked tourney with a pair of queens. Think he thought we were crazy tbh but chad does read a lot of the updates so perhaps...

anyway midway through level 4 Random Turkish Guy Limps utg and it folds to me on the button and would you believe it  ad ah. i raise to 1200 (150/300 25 ante). RTG reraises me to over 6k (can"t remeber exact amount but felt it was enough to commit him to pot as he was on about 20k too. So in they go and he calls with  qh qs Aces hold and i am over 40k - sweet.

Continue to play day out with fairly solid values as i absolutely done in and happy with 40k to go into day 2. Eventually nurse it up to 49475 winning the last hand of the day and will return on wednesday hopefully in better condition...

Right that is enough for now as i am now suffering withdrawels will try to do another update soon...

Sorry it a day late ,but there"s hers"s Level 5(200-400,50 ante).Having regained some sort of composure i sit quite for 3 orbits but with it costing me1k a go im looking to get busy get a rush of cards ak,queens i raise every body folds.I get aces in the small blind and as it was the third hand in a row i had raise ,i thought i would over bet to look like a steal.WTF was i thinking the guy folds a flat call should have been the move trying to extract some money off him,it had been a long day. Then there"s a hour to go before the end of the day ive got roughly 15k .Im in the bb and look down kk.Its folded round to the button who raises to 1400,sb re pops to 3k with 6k behind.I"m not usually into theatrics but give it a big dwell scrath head etc then slowly push them in.Big gets out the way and sb reluctantly calls. He turns over 9s.I cant remember the flop but he hit his nine some where in it ,think this final kick in the you know whats affcted my memory.I"m down to the felt

So ive got just unde 6k left and to cut a long story short, after  getting my chips in about 15 times i finally get a caller  kc qc for me  :as: ah for him ,a  kd on the flop gives me hope but im a goner.
Conclusion-I was nervous at the start but managed to get into it and really enjoyed it,maybe the aq plays were poor but i win them i"m up to 40k and sitting pretty for day 2.The kings hand played its self and i thought for 70% of the day i played well.Duncan Bell came (the bracelet winner)came up to me after play finished and said i played well,we shared a beer and went through my play where i think i learnt more about my game than i ever have.
At least i got plenty time to enjoy some time with Ailsa now.Theres a internet terminal outside the poker room so expect regular updates on James.Watch out Tighty  :D

Unlucky Micky. Sounds like you lost out in three major hands - each of which you went in ahead. As they say, these things happen, and they"re a major test of character. Sounds like you handled yourself well.

Another day, and a little more luck on your side and you could have been up there with a mountain of chips in front of you.

Never mind mate, hope you and your good lady enjoy the rest of your stay.

Looking forward to seeing you in Blackpool.

No joy Micky mate, sorry to shear you"re gone. Looks like you had no luck gathering chips when you needed them and people got some real suck outs when you were in ahead on the other hands. Enjoy the rest of your holiday and come back with all that extra experience in your grey matter.

GL Eck, keep building that stack.
