This event; the final event of Season Two, is being played at the Grosvenor Casino in Brighton, on November 1st & 2nd, 2008.
The provisional entry list features international teams from England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland and Wales.
Teams will be made up of 4 players and a playing / non playing captain.
The format of the Championship will be as follows:-
Day One - Saturday November 1st:
2.30pm - 4 x single table matches with each match featuring a player from each country.
6.30pm - 4 x single table matches with each match featuring a player from each country.
Points will be allocated as follows: 5 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 5th place in each of the 8 matches above.
10.30pm - 4 x heads up matches featuring 1 player from each country.
12.30pm - 4 x heads up matches featuring 1 player from each country.
Captains will choose which 2 of their 4 players should compete in the above heads up matches.
Points will be allocated as follows: 2 points for each heads up match win.
Total points allocated on day one will be 136 points.
Day Two - Sunday November 2nd:
2.30pm - 32 player multi table tournament featuring all players.
Points will be allocated as follows: 16 points for 1st place down to 1 point for 16th place.
Total points allocated on day two will be 136 points.
At the moment APAT is looking to charge an entry fee of £100 per player, with no registration fee. In addition, Blue Square will add £2,000 to the prize pool, so in total there will be over £5,000 to play for and the Championship Cup and Medals for the top three teams.
The structure of individual events is to be determined.
Countries will have the ability to use team strategy and APAT will finalise the specifics of this with Captains before the event commences.
Captains will be announced during August.
In a change from the original announcement, Captains will be able to pick four players of their choosing but it is anticipated that they will choose (at least) their leading compatriot from the APAT National Rankings. APAT will provide Captains with performance based information where requested.

Hi Des
The original announcement was that this would be an invitational for the leading 16 APAT ranked players from 4 countries (Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland).
This has now changed to 4 players + 1 captain from 8 countries, but these players do NOT have to be top APAT ranked.
Can you please explain the change in thought for this. Are you really going to get 4 players from France, Italy, Hungary and Germany travelling over to the UK for this?
In my opinion, i think that these countries will end up being played by UK APAT members who have some tenuous connection with these countries.
I looked upon this event as being a reward for doing well in Season 2 of APAT, with the teams being made up of the top ranked players from their country, with maybe the captain having a wildcard pick as well (similar to the Ryder Cup).

Totally agree with the newportlad... was really hoping i could do well in the remaining tournies to get a chance to represent my country... now no matter how well I do I may not get the chance...

Have to agree with Darren on this one. Although I think it is great that we are looking to expand our horizons even more from these shores, I was looking forward to an end of season finale with the top players from season 2 getting to represent their countries.
I do think the structure of competitions is brilliant over the weekend. A mixture of STT, Heads-Up and MTT should be excellent.
Bit worried about the numbers though Des. After all when it comes to APAT events in Brighton, we are use to three people and a dog, and one of those is normally the dealer. They might have to get some extra chairs in. ;D

Is it still leadin apat players for teams ?? obviously after london and final placings sorted out, good to know and is probably best way to decide teams and fairest way !
-

I expect the Captains to be mature enough to look at all of the factors in determining their final selections. I would include Rankings very much in that. But it does lessen the hand of a Captain if they cannot choose players strategically. That said, it would not surprise me at all if each of the UK / Irish teams are picked solely on Rankings.
-
Damn only other country I have a tenous link with is Holland and they are not on the list damn :"(
-
One more point, there will not be any players selected for a country based on tenuous links. ::)
Also, the format of this event should work exceptionally well with 8 countries involved, but would not with 4.
Finally, we are in discussions with poker organisations / teams within the countries mentioned and they are extremely interested in coming to Brighton for a chance to take the Cup and title to Europe.
-
Just signaling my intentions that I would love to represent England in this
-
should it not be up to each individual country to pick the capt, whether he be playing or non playing?
also as i understand proffesionals can play in this, so how can the current rankings come in to play?
-
Shhhhh Mary, I fancy putting myself forward for Scotland ;D
-
also, I think it should be played as the team event in Blackpool, gives more players a chance to play and makes the social side of things a bit better.
-

It"s an amateur event Dewi, so there will be no professionals playing. (I will clarify that in title).
I think the Team Managers (may be better terminology than Captain) should be experienced and know the players and APAT well, wherever possible.
As there is no organisational process in place within each Country, a small number of players will inevitably end up selecting the Manager, which may lead to a suspicion of favouritism etc, in final team selection. If APAT chooses the Manager, then that question disappears as we are independent of each individual country.
However, once the Manager is in place all decisions with regards to selection / tactics will be made within each Country.
-
also, I think it should be played as the team event in Blackpool, gives more players a chance to play and makes the social side of things a bit better.
I think by its nature this event will be quite different to Blackpool Dewi and I feel there is space in the APAT calendar for a more serious event, which should add to the overall tournament experience of those who play in it.
-
Just a quick note to agree with des the tournament looks superb to play in and that is probably why people are pushing there ideas to try and make the team!
And the more countries in it the better it is good to play with different players from different cultures.
if it comes down to overall rankings then that means more people will play the remianing ranking events which can only be good for APAT and the more sponsorship off blue square next year !

If you remember Vienna it was a great thing that you could play against different players all over Europe. I met most of you and had a pleasent surprise that poker can help you to get new friends. I still owe some beer some of you ;D

Des, this looks like a brilliant event. I"m sure virtually everyone would be proud to represent their country - and if not, support the ones who are selected.

i think that the overall structure is fantastic, it could almost have a similar relevence to how the major pros view the wsop HORSE championship, obviously from an amateur perspective as most of us amateurs can only play hold-em so its a chance to show your skills at various facets of the game.
The only problem i see is that it could be a tournament that is only going to be played by long standing apat players, which i can understand as any appointed captain is going to choose players not through favouritism but basically because he/she would know those players games and how good they are, he/she will not know less established apat players therefore it would be a shot in the dark to choose them.
as a conclusion to this epic post i think this kind of tournament has a big future in the apat schedule, hopefully next year it could include "best newcomer" or highest amount of points gained in live play and also ranking leaders. apat should be applauded for introducing new events and not stagnating schedules!

Maybe try to add more emphasis to regional championships too? If you win your region, you get not only a seat to the worlds in london, but a national team seat too?
-
...

To counterbalance your argument I would suggest that anybody who wins a national championship will have made some kind of impact even if that was the only event they have entered so newer APAT players should still be in the running.
But generally I think you"re right, however I"m sure this will be a recurring tournament so todays new members are next years established members (etc. etc.), so I don"t think it"s necessarily that big a problem.
-
The teams should be picked as per the final season ranking positions, this is the only fair way of doing so, otherwise captains will end up picking people they know, or their closest pals in the APAT community. To have come close to the top of the rankings indicates great support to the APAT events both live and on line, and as such these people deserve to play in the big "selectorial" events on merit. As I have expressed in earlier posts I am not wholly happy with the points system for this season, and I am fully aware that Des is on the case for next season, but if we have a league table to show who are our best players in season 2 then to me it is a no brainer to use it! Unfortunately that means I haven"t got a chance of selection, maybe next year?
-
Well unfortunately for me, the UK Forum Championship was a non-ranking event and although I won it, I dont get ranking points for the leaderboard.

I think this is a good example of where the team captains can use a bit of judgment. Some people might be known to be good, but not scored highly in the National Championships.
I think this organisation of choosing the teams is much better than just going by the rankings, it enables the captains to look at the bigger picture rather than just APAT. Being a captain in this tournament is much more than just a honorary title, the judgment of the captains could have a real bearing on the tournament result.
I think it"s unlikely that anybody will get picked just for being friends with a team captain - this kind of thinking seriously underestimates the will to win of just about anybody who takes part in APAT tournaments. I"m extremely confident that whatever the nitty gritty details of how the teams get chosen the underlying concept that all of the team captains will have in mind will be -who are the best people to make us the most likely to win.

Unfortunately it"s not that simple. Many many players have shown incredible support to APAT and not scored many points at all, while some have done extremely well in a smaller number of events. As with Mary, we may well crown our World Amateur Champion in a couple of weeks time and find that he cannot get within miles of a team spot. Now, that may be right, however I think it is correct that the captain should have the final decision on team makeup.
-
-
I"m sorry Des I have to disagree on this one I think it is as simple as that. I presume Des that you will select the team captain, in that case pick players you feel deserve some recognition for their contribution and support to APAT ( and are hope fully good players), and maybe have a wild card pick like Darren suggested. But I do feel that the guys who have tried seriously to do well in the seasons ranking events should be rewarded with places in the team.
-
the problem with judging it solely on the rankings is that certain players have more time to play ranking events than others, this is why i suggested most points in live play, after all it is a live tournament. for example i have only played in 3 ranking events this season, yet im in the top 50(or was last time i looked)
in any case these are all ideas for next year..as it is a work in progress
-
Well unfortunately for me, the UK Forum Championship was a non-ranking event and although I won it, I dont get ranking points for the leaderboard.
I"d like to think that you will be in the Scotland team Mary, not just because of your achievements in Blackpool but your regular participation in other APAT events including the regionals and online, and of course the forum. A few good results too, not just Blackpool.
Onlive winner MickeyP is another regular participant at the regionals and online events who I feel warrants a place even if the rankings may say otherwise.
-
Exactly Jon.
Why would someone pick a team of mates, if it meant they"d lose. Imagine the embarrassment of losing to the Scots for example - can"t think of anything worse!
;)
You don"t have to imagine for long Daniel. You"ll be able to realise the real thing come November.

That"s right. I would expect the UK based captains to be non playing, giving them a sole focus of getting their team selection and tactics right. Therefore APAT hopefully, should not be picking any players.

Negreanu is from Transylvania, which is in Romania, but belonged to Hungary before the 1st WW, so his grandma was Hungarian therefore he speaks some Hungarian (namely 2 words and they are not nice words :D)

Update:
I"m pleased to announce that Alan Lake has accepted the post of Captain of the English team for the European Team Championship.
Similarly, long time APAT member Len Collin has been appointed Captain of the Irish team.
On the European front, Viktoria Szilasi has been appointed Captain of the Hungarian team while Jean-Michel Ballocchi has been appointed Captain of the French team and Stephan Kalhamer has been appointed Captain of the German team.
Further appointments will be announced in the near future.
-
Good Luck Alan!
How your gonna pick the team from the amount of decent players we have is beyond me, best of luck tho!

Thankyou and you"re right it will not be an easy task. I will certainly be leaving all decisions until the conclusion of the season 3 online and live ranking events.
The following was added to APAT's original post on this thread, and is quoted here for the benefit of those who have not seen it...

I happen to believe that this is absolutetly a fair and proper thing to do. And so, subject to that individual wanting to take part in the event, that is one of the four places taken care of. Note: At this moment in time I have not studied the rankings to see who is top, or who may be well placed to move into top spot... nor do I know the nationality of any of them!
As for the selection process for the remaining three places... well, I shall be using a mixture of scientific analysis and other tried and tested selection methods... I am currently scouring ebay for a set of Runes and a crystal ball.
Cheers,

Firstly, with regards to the 4 additional countries.....this will improve the tournament and I cannot see any negatives around this for any of the UK / Irish teams. Secondly, a bit of respect for these players please, no more talk about Hungarian grandfathers etc.
With regards to the makeup of the UK / Irish teams, looking at the most recent published rankings, I can see that the highest ranked English player that has won an APAT National event is ranked in 16th position and way off the top 4 English players. I was looking forward to representing England at this event and have been playing all year to get my ranking position within the top 10..... Missed out on the team challenge as I was out of the country when invited to play so can I MAKE SURE SOMEBODY KNOWS THAT I WANT TO PLAY THIS !!

I would go further and say a player with two APAT Championship final tables, a UK Ladies title and a consistently high ranking in season two will not need an announcement to get noticed.

For those who don"t know me I"m dropping in to say Hi.
I used to be described by the bods at Paddy Power Poker as a semi-pro - semi-amateur might be more accurate. You can check out my Blog for more information on me by following the link.
http://www.fatboydim.com (http://www.fatboydim.com)
As Captain of the Irish team I will be looking to appoint members from the leader board as a priority. I won"t play myself. my next game is The Irish Poker Classic at the Macau in Cork next Friday. So if anyone is playing that come up and say hello.
Thanks to Des and the team at APAT for proposing me. It"s always an honour to represent the green, white and gold.
-
Welcome Len, glad to have you looking after the Irish team, who I"ll be cheering on over the weekend in Brighton. I think that"s fair to say :)
For anyone who hasn"t read Len"s blog, which paints a vivid portrait of poker across the pond, here is a sample.....

Got A Complaint????
Players in Dublin don"t realise how lucky they are. Until recently they had four clubs to choose from - Cool Hand Lukes, The Fitzwilliam, The Sporting Emporium and The Jackpot. That"s not to mention the various games run by JP Poker, Big Slick and Poker Ireland that are all within easy reach and numerous other games in pubs clubs etc etc.
Yet the Dubs still love to complain and for the most part seem to complain about the most trivial things. Such as -
" A drunk was playing at my table and no one did anything about it!"
Sure drunks can be annoying, but they"re a great source of chips.
"The food is too expensive."
Then eat before you play - after all who goes to a poker club for the quality of the food.
"The players are rude."
As long as the Staff aren"t.
We also get a lot of complaints in the TV world. The very first episode of The Bill that I wrote back in 1991 /1992 had a single scene where a police officer eating an ice lolly was called to an emergency. In order to get moving he threw the ice lolly out the window. - The episode received a number of complaints that the officer was setting a bad example to litter bugs. I wouldn"t mind but nobody complained about the fact that someone was shot in the episode and another person was stabbed.
I also received a complaint from a gentleman who sent me a letter after an episode to tell me that the correct grammar is "I have not." and not "I ain"t". - Not on the Larkmead estate it isn"t. I got my revenge by using this gentleman"s name in an episode turning him into an illiterate paedophile.
The silliest complaint I ever heard of however was a person who complained about a Christmas episode of Casualty. His complaint? - The trees still had their leaves on. - I"m sure environmentalists would have loved the sight of the production team defoliating oak trees and the like.
So as a final word on complaints I"ll leave you with "Rigger" - "Rigger" likes a bet on the horses every single day. He"s not averse to putting a big bet on, trouble is there are three bookies in Westport and he"s fallen out with two of them Boyles and Paddy Power. He won"t go back he says. "f "em!" he harumph"s. "They"ll never see my money again." But what will happen when inevitably he falls out with Ladbrokes????
Gotta go as dinner is burning. But tomorrow I will be playing the Main Event of the Party Poker Galway Racing Festival. Check out the Pokerevents site for regular updates and I will be doing a live blog from the Eglinton on my progress.
-
I would be proud to be considered for the Irish team, Im hoping 39 APAT points will give me a good chance.

I"m pleased to announce that Stuart "Sir_Percival" Oliver has accepted the post of non playing Captain of the Scottish team for the European Team Championship. Stuart is a very experienced APAT-er having made day two of three National events and I"m sure he will do a great job of selecting the Scottish team for Brighton.
-
A good choice. Hope you consider Chris Hoy for a place!

Hi
This is my view.
I think the membership of some of the teams is going to be very interesting. I expect to see at least 1 highly ranked APAT player per team as APAT have stipulated this in the guidelines. In terms of the professional question, the definition is clear, as long as poker is not your SOLE income then you are not professional. So I guess you could be deemed semi profession and eligible. I think the APAT loyality thing kicks in by having the opportunity to play for your country due to being high placed in the rankings, thats worth going for in my opinion. Like Newportlad, I also thought teams were going to be made up of APAT regulars, but perhaps the best ranked player having the opportunity to play with some great players and represent their country at the same time is good enough to keep playing APAT and go for that top spot. Good luck with the event APAT.

Hi,,,would just like to say,,this is my first season playing apat,,i was attracted by the chance of playing for england if i did well in the rankings,,as this seemed to be the main prize for playing all year.I need a pretty good finish to get near the top,but nevertheless will carry on trying. It would be disappointing therefore if the highest ranked players were not selected.I have tried a few times to register for live events,,but sadly due to my own rubbish computer skills havent managed to register yet lol,,i guess these events are where u get noticed more.I have played in the wsop main event and class myself as a pretty good player but would not wish to take the place of someone who has finished near the top of the rankings.Rankings are by far the best way to assess a player.Good luck to all who are selected,,,hope to spank u soon live lololol

It seems to become a real great tourney! I"d love to win

The European Amateur Team Championship is a great opportunity for team competition beyond the borders. My team and me are looking forward to travel to Brighton and meet the players of the other teams and to stand the competition at the table.

;D This event will show if the Germans are able to perform well on the island in something else than soccer. But yeah ... if the competition gets too tough we"ll count on getting lucky :2d: 7s in penalties (not that we needed to)! :D
Good luck to everyone in Brighton!

I get the feeling that the build up to this is going to be excellent and the weekend will be something special, whether you are playing or railing.

When we come back from holiday, I"m going to broach the subject of a weekend in Brighton with Caz. Railing this event could be a lot of fun.

:D :D I saw this on Dave channel at the weekend. It"s called How To Start Your Own Country. Stuff about people living in Sealand (old platform in North Sea ???), a guy in states who owns & sells acres of the moon (true 8) he"s made millions). You might hear me being mentioned on it (Half Man Half Mattress - pre fat Charlie Sheen days :P)

Rankings data on leading players has now been issued to team captains, so we can expect some announcements shortly. Captains can contact players directly through the forum via PM or APAT can email players as requested by the Captains.
Good luck to everyone hoping for selection.
The European teams will be announced in the near future also.

I am pleased to announce that Mary Martin has agreed to represent the winning Scottish team in the forthcoming European Team Championships.
Mary recently won The Individual Championship at the APAT UK Team Championship, held at the G Casino in Blackpool, becoming the first female winner of an APAT National event.
I first met a very nervous Mary at the Irish APAT event in Dublin in 2007 where she ran into my full house which took most of her stack. It"s a strange way to make friends but we have since played online and live together at APAT events and Mary"s game has gone from strength to strength. She is always willing to help fellow APAT"ers and I am sure she will do APAT and Scotland proud in November.
Congratulations Mary.

Congratulations Mary

Thanks Stuart :)
Thanks Linda :)

Italian ... I could set somehting I know some players and I am bi national.
-
I am pleased to be able to announce the second player to join the winning Scottish team is Gordon (GiMac) Mcarthur.
I first met Gordon at an APAT national event in Walsall where he was sat on my left and we were on the tightest table in history. He and I had a lot of fun trying to steal blinds which usually ended up with us heads up. I have played a few times with Gordon since and I rate him as one of the best APAT players not to have won a national event.

I am pleased to announce that the 3rd player to join the winning Scottish team is Micky (jacklevel) Paterson.
Micky, who won the APAT Onlive championship has been an "APAT"er" since the start and was one of the first players to welcome me when I joined shortly after. We have since travelled to Dublin together in 2007 where he railed me to the semi-final and then I railed him to his final table in a local event that very evening.
At the APAT Scottish championship this year we played together for most of Day 1 and on the way home he commented on my "loose" play. This was from the man that had re-raised me preflop with 8 4 offsuit!!!!
Since leaving my hometown in Scotland, Micky has also officially become the best player in that town. ;)
Congratulations Micky.
-
Congratulations Micky, I"m really pleased for you!
But England are gonna trounce ya!
-
congrats Micky, you going to bring the Mrs along this time - there will be lots for her to do in Brighton and it would be nice to meet her.
-
congrats Mickey - this Scottish team is looking very strong
-
I am pleased to announce that the final player to join the winning Scottish team is Phil Starrs.
Phil, won the APAT Scottish Poker Championship in 2007, part of that prize included entry into the EPT event in Barcelona. He went on to cash in that event, finishing in a very respectable 55th.
Phil"s poker achievements don"t end there. Amoungst many other wins/cashes, this year he finished 18th in the Irish Open and is also a past winner of the Scottish Poker Championships.
Congratulations Phil, you are a great asset to the team.

On behalf of all the members of the French Team I would like to say we are very happy and very proud to take part to this APAT Event.
We are looking forward to meeting the other teams and competing for the title.
Here"s a quick background for each player:
Franck Viollet - "vazysarko" - has played in a couple of APAT events before. He is a SNG and HU specialist, so say sharkscope ;)
Cedric Billot is the Secretary of the French Poker Player Federation (ffjp).
Jeremy Henriet is also part of the French Federation and has played in different live events in France and abroad as well.
And finally I have played in Cardiff and Edinburgh last season as well as Vienna last spring plus online APAT events and was runner-up of the WCOAP Main Event 2007.
Good luck to everybody and see you soon in Brighton!!
Jean-Michel Ballocchi

Hi there,
Im GunsNaces, playing for France.
See you in Brighton guys.

As regards to the selection of players and captains, this process to me couldnt be more simple.
The 5 top ranked players in The APAT from season 2 should represent their respective country with the highest ranked player being selected as captain. This would remove any of the players being picked through favouritism or a "who you know" situation.
In saying that i would hope the Team captains have the intelligence and common sence to pick the most consistant and skillful players in their fields, i.e heads up play and multi table play, so they can win the tittle and the honours for their team and country.
The structure has been set up to a really high standard and has been equally as good all year round, to have this team even as the finale of a great season is fantastic. I just hope it is played and won to a standard that all of the APAT members and players expect.
Good luck to all teams and players.

Des,
Is there a player briefing for this? Also, is the prize money just to be split between the top 3 teams or are there individual prizes as well.
Havent seen anything posted so not sure, if there is can you please direct me to the posts :)
Cheers

Hi Mary, details have just been posted. The money will be split amongst the top three countries, very roughly 50%, 30%, 20%.

I have just read the structure. Have the Heads up games changed to allow every player to be involved? It was originally designed for only 2 from each team. Can I also comment on the MTT on day two. The structure looks very fast. I dont know what others think but it looks as if players will be in Push or shove mode by the forth level, before the first break. Would APAT consider a larger starting stack, eg. 5k or is this structure set in stone?
-
Sorry please ignore my comment about the Heads up, im an eeejit.
-

:D
The MTT is designed to finish by 10pm / 11pm on Sunday night; particularly for those who have chosen to travel back, but it should give a great deal more play than a TV format for example. The players at this Championship are very experienced so I think everyone will understand that playing the first levels passively could lead to trouble later.
-
so I think everyone will understand that playing the first levels passively could lead to trouble later.
I need to find a plan B, and fast. ;D
