Post by: Matt D on August 28, 2015, 18:34:17 PM
Welcome to Day 1 of the Welsh Amateur Poker Championship being held at Cardiff Grosvenor in Wales. Irish Tom and I are here today, with special guest updater John Murray joining us from tomorrow.

We"ve pretty much a full house for Day 1b. Day 1a started at 6pm with 35 runners. With 3 full hours of late reg tonight, we expect that number to rise considerably.

2 further local players have exited the fray, making the total number of exits now 3.

Fans of Channel 4"s seminal Late Night Poker series may recognise the name Rob Thomas. That"s because Rob produced the series. Filmed right here in Cardiff at the Splot Industrial Estate, Late Night Poker was the first time UK audiences had seen poker on their televisions. It played a huge part in the popularity of the game here.

Quick bit of Late Night Poker trivia: The show was broadcast for 10 series. The highest ranking hand on record over that time was a King High Straight Flush by... me! :D

Whilst I"ve been reminiscing, Ricky Farbrother has left the room.

Aye, that was the exit of Wai Gal, a well known "maverick" local player in these parts.

Can you relate the hand sequence pls?

p.s. you asked about APAT players. You"re sat next to one! :D

Jason Stephens near felted holding 10d Qc on a board of Kc 9h Jh.

The money goes in on the turn of Ah.

His opponent flips Qh Kh.

The turn was the meaningless 7d.

Whilst I type this Jason leaves the room, having lost the remainder of his chips in the next hand.

We"re down to 28 players. 20 mins left of level 8. Blinds 300/600/100.

Facing an under the gun raise followed by 4 flat calls, David Griffiths pumps 3.5k more into the pot holding AK. The original raiser shoves for 20k and David makes the call.

His opponent flips AT. Tragedy for David when his opponent spikes the Ten. David departs.

It"s a fast start to Day 1B, with one player already eliminated.

Steve Rumming raised to 200 pre-flop at 25/50, holding AK, which was called by David Gregory with AA and Dann Williams in position with JT. The Flop was AK4 and all three players checked (tricky lot, these APAT players). A blank Turn saw just 500 chips each entering the pot from Gregory and Rumming, with Williams folding. Another K on the River gave full houses to both players, AAAKK against AAKKK, and the pot was raised and reraised until all the chips were in.

Very unlucky spot for Rumming. Gregory is the early chip-leader with a little over double the starting stack.

Two big hands in succession on Table 6.

In the first hand, no cards were actually seen, so we only have the players" word for what they claim to have had.

Simon Hill raised to 150 pre-flop and was called by Richard Baker, but then reraised to 650 by Dylan Herbert. Paul Haines then raised further to 1,700 and it was folded back to Dylan, who called. On a J-high flop, Paul led out for 2,300 and Dylan folded.

Paul says he had AK, Dylan QQ. Also Richard Rudling-Smith says he folded JJ pre-flop, which I can easily believe.

The very next hand saw Richard Baker lose 7,000 chips to Robert Smith.

Richard had AA, Robert had KQ, and the flop was AJT.

Richard did well not to lose the lot.

Table 5 was showing a board of 8d 10h 5h Qc 6h when I came by, with 4,000 chips already in the middle.

Gareth Smith in Seat 1 checked the River and Daniel "Day" Lewis in Seat 2 bet 3,000.

After thinking about it, Gareth called and was shown 10d 10c, with Daniel having flopped a set, which was the winner.

Richard Baker is out, getting his diminished stack in with 9d 10d on a flop that gave him straight and flush draws. Both players were drawing and both missed, but Q-high beat T-high and Richard is now free to prepare for the seven o"clock tournament.

The player who replaced Richard Baker has been particularly active. Having raised pre-flop, he moved all-in on a flop of Q94.

Due to the history over previous hands, Dylan Herbert had no hesitation in calling with KQ and was shown AJ.

The board blanked out and Dylan added 12k to his stack. Debbie Kimm was moved into the lucky seat.

The very next hand, Dylan opened for 725 (at 75/150), which he claimed was an accident. He was called by Bogdandorin   Serea in the SB. With the flop showing  10s 4d 2c, Dylan bet 800 and Bogdandorin raised to 1,875. Dylan asked how many chips Bogdanorin had behind. Some other players tried to answer on his behalf, but Andrea the dealer was very firm in telling them that they were not allowed so to do (though I could see he had 16,000 behind).

Dylan raised again to 4,500. "Have you got Kings?. I beat Kings" said Bogdandorin, and called. On the Turn of  9h, he moved all-in and was quickly called by Dylan. Dylan"s 10d 10h had flopped a set and was ahead of Jc Js.

Having knocked out two players in two hands, Dylan now has the most chips, with 50k. Andrea is ruling Table 6, with Dylan close behind.

No raises pre-flop, presumably.

JP Round has also been eliminated, though we haven"t heard the details. "Bad beat?", I asked. "No", he said. "Bad play?". No answer.

Sometimes, imaginative play can pay off.

Example 1 - Dave Burt raises from the button with Qs 3c after a couple of players have called pre-flop and flops two pair. By the time the hand is over, he has added 10k to his stack, moving from 14k to 24k.

Example 2 - Dan Owston calls a raise with Js 7s and flops a flush at the same time that the raiser flops a set with 2d 2c on a board of 2s 10s Ks 7c 3h. That"s the end of Dean Griffith"s tournament.

Dave Howard has gone out holding today"s losingest hand - AA. He bet every street and shoved the River, losing to a rivered flush.

We have also lost Steve "Scouse" Bayliff. He lost 12k with QJ against 99 on a QQ9 flop and bluffed off the rest, representing a made hand on a 3-flush, 4-straight board, but being called by top set.

Debbie Kimm shoves her short-stack of 5,075 with 88 and three players go all-in behind her. That doesn"t seem good for her, but...............they all have AK. They all miss and Debbie quadruples up to just over 20k and is back in the tournament.

Rob Quinn opens for 800 from middle position and Floyd Williams 3-bets to 1,600 from the cut-off and is called.

The board comes out 10s 5h 4h 6c Qd.

Floyd bets 1,600 on the Flop and Rob check/calls. The Turn goes check/check. On the River, Rob bets 4k and Floyd calls.

Rob shows Ac Js and we find that Floyd has picked off the bluff with 8d 10d.

There has been a big transfer of chips on Table 5.

Gareth Lee-Smith, holding Js Qd, doubled up Dyfan Jones, who had 6c 6d, when the cards came out 6h 10s Jd Jh 9s.

Dyfan now has 54k and Gareth has reduced from the tournament chip lead to 38k.

Stu Greenan facing a flat of 400, then a raise to 1.2k from Floyd Williams, shoves all in with AT pre-flop for 7.5k. Original flat-caller folds. Called by AK. T on flop. K on river that stings. Stu departs (to the bar!)

The leading stacks were:

67k Mark Channer
59k Dylan Herbert
59k Dann Williams
48k Terry Evans

Then there was a gap back to the peleton.

Terry Evans has lost most of his large stack, and the culprit appears to be Dan Owston.

As I reach their table, there is a bunch of chips in the middle, with the board reading  10s 9d 10c 9h.

The Turn goes check/check.

The River is  7d and both players give up on the pot with another check/check.

Terry shows  6c 6d and Dan shows Kd Qh to inherit the pot by default.

Terry is down to 20k. Dan is on 70k.

Two out in one hand.

Rudders grinds his stack down but finally finds the hand he has been waiting for and shoves for 5k.

Mark Channer goes all-in over the top and Terry Evans calls for just over 20k.

Rudders says "I hope no-one has a Q".

Rudders  Q9
Mark       AQ
Terry      QQ

The Flop is AA8.

Rudders picks up a straight draw but very unluckily misses his outs.

James Orchard shoved with 55.
Bill Law has TT.
Stephen Bradbury came along with AK.

The cards came  2h Js Qh Qd 10c

Bill filled up on the River, though he was already ahead. Stephen won the side-pot with a straight, as Bill was the shortest stack, and eliminates James.

Linda didn"t improve and is now registering for the PLO tournament.

David Singh opens and Jonathan Lane goes all-in for 29k.

Joe Char-Grill called the all-in with his "stack" of 10k.

David called.

David      ad1 Kh
Jonathan  Ah Qd
Joe          Qc Qh

No high cards on the board mean Joe stays ahead until the River, but he lets out a sigh when the Ac hits - until the other players point out that it is the fourth club on the board and he has made a flush.

So Joe trebles up, David wins the side-pot and Jonathan is not playing any more.

More chips for Debbie Kimm.

Dylan Herbert opens and Debbie calls.

On a board of  ad1 Qc 3c 7s 3s, Dylan c-bets the Flop and Debbie calls. Dylan shuts down and checks the Turn and River, folding to Debbie"s River bet.

Dylan claims  Qh Jd. Debbie doesn"t disclose.

Steve Pugh opens to 3,500.

Isaac Palmer raises to 8,500.

Joe Carr-Hill calls the 8,500.

Steve shoves and then Isaac shoves behind. Joe folds.

Steve has  Jh Js. Isaac has Qs Qh. Joe says he folded  ad1 Kh.

An Ace on the Flop leaves Joe kicking himself. Isaac more than doubles up.

Straight afterwards, Joe opens to 4,000. Lewis Tucker goes all-in for 40,600 and so does Steve Pugh.

Joe open-folds Ad Qh

Lewis Ah Ks

Steve Qs Qh

A King on the Flop wins it for Lewis and leaves Steve short.

However, Steve doubles up with Kd Kc against  10d 10c almost straight away.

What a difference a few hours makes:

At the beginning of day 1b:

At the end of day 1b:

Last night"s results for the No Limit Hold'em side event.

34 players, £850 prizepool.

1. Stephen Rumming, £320
2. Stephen M. Kearns, £210
3. Richard Baker, £150
4. Gholam Modir, £100
5. Dean Griffiths, £70

The Flop is  A s 5c 3s and there is 30k in the pot.

Kyle Hyman bets 3k and Sebastian Morariu moves in for 29k.

Kyle thinks about it.

Then he thinks some more.

I go and have a chat with Jason Kemp on the next table. He has 110k btw.

On the first table, Kyle is still thinking about it.

He calls.  9h 9s

Sebastian shows  ad1 Qh

The board runs out  6c 4s and Seb doubles up.

A big pot.

Rodders opens to 6.5k in early position and is called in three spots by Roy Powell beside him, Dan Owston in the SB and Bob Bulman in the BB.

The Flop is  10h Js Ks.

Dan checks, Bob shoves for 32k, Rodders calls instantly and the others fold.

Bob  Qh 9h
Rod   Ah Qs

They have both flopped a straight, with Rodders ahead.

An Ace would chop the pot, but it doesn"t come and Bob is out.

Rodders takes the chip lead and becomes the first player above 200k.

Steve stays alive.

Details of Gavin Priestley"s exit.

Former APAT Champion Shirley Cole has been very short all day and has hung around and grinded her way up bit by bit.

Finally she found a spot to accumulate some chips when Gavin opened with  ad1 Jh and she had  Kc Kd.

Gavin was short and went out.

Shirley is now on 140k.

Just picking this up (from my home 120 miles away after having busted last level of last night) - the hands were actually reversed and I had the needling rights over Dan (who told me he had JJ).

He lost c 30k with  A s 5c against  9h 9d and then called a shove for his last 30k with 10d 8s, but was against ad1 Kh and couldn"t catch up.

It"s folded around to Dan Owston in the Small Blind, which only means one thing - he shoves it in for 80k, with the BB at 8k and Kyle calls.

Dan  Kh 5h
Kyle  Kd Qc

Kyle goes further ahead on the Flop, but there are two hearts and hope for Dan, but we actually end up with a split:

David Singh has been eliminated in 18th place.

First he lost with AA against AK, all in pre-flop against Anthony Jones.

Anthony made a flush and doubled-up his 62k stack, making a major hole in David"s 90k.

David then got all-in pre-flop for his remaining chips with A8 against Lewis Tucker"s QQ and didn"t improve.

Dan Owston has fallen in 17th.

Dan shoved  Ks 8s pre-flop into Kyle Hyman"s  ad1 Ac.

He hit an 8, but that was it:

5c 8h 5s 6d 9d

We are now on the money bubble and playing hand for hand.

We are back, with the two Robs on 2BBs and Debbie on 3BBs.

Rob Thomas is the SB and it is folded around to him. He is keeping an eye on the other table, where Rob Davies will be in the blinds in a minute and may bust first. Eventually he folds and gives Dave Burt a walk in the BB.

Dave turns over  ad1 Ac

Some action on the bubble.

Rodders raises to 30k from the SB and Roy Powell calls in the BB.

The flop is  7d Kc 3d and Rod continues for another 30k.

Roy shoves all-in for 65k total and Rodders hesitates.

"I have nothing, but I think I have to call" he says, and he does.

The Robs perk up, with the possibility that they might leapfrog someone into the cash places.

Roy  Qd Ks
Rod  2s 9s

Not good news for the short-stacks.

Rod doesn"t win the hand.

Post by: MintTrav on August 30, 2015, 18:58:30 PM
Next hand, it is folded around to Rob Thomas and he goes all-in for 13k.

Everyone folds to Debbie Kimm, who already has 10k in the pot as the BB and has to put in another 3k.

Rob tells Debbie she has to call and she makes the loosest call she has ever made in her life with  9s 4s.

Rob has  Ac 3d

The board:   2c Qs 9d Ks 2d

Debbie knocks out Rob and the bubble is gone.

Everyone else is in the money.

Having made the cash, Rob Davies shoves his short-stack with Kh Js and is busted in 15th place.

Debbie Kimm then shoves her SB with Kd Qc into Jason Kemp"s BB. Jason calls with 9h 8c and knocks her out in 14th.

An under the gun shove from Mark Channer is met with a call by the big blind of Jason Kemp.

Cards on their backs. Mark shows QT, Jason a pair of fives.

The board runs out 8s 4d Jc Jd Kd, and Mark leaves us in 13th place (£170).

Action from Table 1:

Steve Roderick opens to 20k from the SB. Steve"s image after the recent hand may be counting against him now, and Roy shoves straight away. Steve folds.

Bash opens to 22k from early position and Chucky shoves for 103k from mid-position. Bash thinks about it and folds, showing an Ace. Chucky doesn"t show, but looks a bit sick. I think he regrets shoving.

Rodders opens to 22k from the Cut-Off and Bash calls in the BB. Rob bets 35k on an Ace-high, two-spade Flop and Bash folds.

And it"s all gone off. Two big stacks cash on Table 1.

Playing 6-handed on each table, Rodders opens to 40k with AQ from early position. Kyle Hyman shoves from the Big Blind for over 200k and Rodders calls.

Kyle  Kh 4h
Steve  ad1 Qc

Rodders" image has worked in his favour this time.

There"s a Queen on the Flop and another one on the Turn.

Rodders eliminates Kyle and now has close to 600k.

They are all-in pre-flop on Table 2, Lewis Tucker holding  ad1 Js against Anthony Jones, who has  Ah Qc.

The stacks are almost identical, with Anthony having just a few more.

The board is all blanks, though there are some chop possibilities on the River -  8h 8d 8c 4d 2h

Anthony eliminates Lewis in 11th.

There will now be a short break while the casino prepares for the final table.

There are some players on this final table with some serious previous form.

Steve Roderick has an incredible record in APAT main events. This is the sixth time he has reached the final table. He has previously finished second on two occasions and third on two occasions. One of his second places was in the APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker, when there were 425 entrants.

Shirley Cole is a previous APAT Champion, winning the English Championship in 2014. She also finished 12th in the Main event at this year"s APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker. Only three players have ever won two APAT main events. Can Shirley join that very exclusive club?

Dave Burt reached a final table at the WSOP in 2014, finishing 9th out of 2,043 players.

Anthony   Kh Kc

Steve     10d 10c

The Flop brings a Ten and the table lets out a sigh of inevitability about Rodders chipping up.

Guy opens for 30k and Rodders 3-bets to 75k. Guy calls.

It"s already a very big pot before we reach the Flop.

the Flop is  8s 6h 10c.

Guy checks and Rodders bets 120k.

Guy considers the situation and decides to wait for a better opportunity.

Jason Kemp is all-in on the Button for 107k.

Bash folds the Small Blind.

Bill thinks about it. He has 66k behind, not counting the 16k he has in already for the BB.

He thinks for a while. Jason"s range musty be very wide here. If Bill has something he is considering calling with, he is likely to be ahead. In the end he folds, so it presumably wasn"t that strong............

It"s a big pot.

Guy opens to 60k in mid-position and Steve calls immediately to his left. Everyone else clears off.

The Flop is  8d Ah 6d

Guy c-bets for 60k and Rodders calls.

Turn  ad1. Guy moves all-in for 107k and Rodders calls quickly.

Guy    9d 9c
Steve  Ac Js

Guy gets up and starts getting ready to leave.

River  2d

Guy hits a flush and takes 227k from Steve.

Steve opens for 40k from the Cut-Off.

Jason moves all-in from the Button for 183k total.

Is one of them making a move or do they have genuine hands?

Steve makes the call.

Jason   Jh Jd

550k Guy
480k Steve
400k Jason
300k Dave
150k Anthony
100k Mike
 80k Bash

Bash moves all-in from early position for 76k

Guy calls from the BB.

Bash  Js 9d
Guy   Jh 10s

The board doesn"t help Bash and he is knocked out in 7th place, winning £340.

8h 2d 4s Kc 10c

Bash has been in good form lately, finishing 6th in the Cardiff GUKPT £500 event and 3rd in the Grosvenor Swansea 25/25 in the last couple of months.

I guess APAT tournaments are tougher proposition, but another excellent result.

All-in from Rodders on the small blind..

Jason Kemp asks for a count. It"s 268k. Plenty of banter between the 2. Jason certain he"s ahead, but... folds.

Guy makes up the SB. The hand is checked to the River and Dave bets 50k.

Guy raises to 200k and Dave thinks.

He cuts the chips from his stack and continues to think.

Eventually he calls.

Guy has  Kh 5d.

There was a 5 on the Flop and another on the River.

Dave mucks.

Winners photos to follow tomorrow!

All that remains is for me to say a massive thanks to the casino, Krisztian the Card Room Manager, Richard, and all the rest of the cardroom staff, the valets and bar staff, and everyone else.

It"s been a very memorable experience.

Thanks to everyone who came to play, observe, or who followed the updates from afar. Hope to see you all at another event soon.

Finally, thanks to John Murray for providing some truly excellent updates, and to Alex Riccardi for her photography services on days 1b and 2.

Finally, to end the day off... Warren Jones did win an event - the casino"s £2k event for £700! :) 67 runners plus a few entries.

First time I have played in this event, managed 5th place.  I Have to say there should be more tournaments like this and then the casino may get a lot more poker players in. Great structure, great tournament. Those two players heads up were serious sharks and I think Dave deserved it through out. Unlucky Guy, although you"ll be going back the West country one happy man no doubt. Congratulations to both of you. vwp.

Thanks to all concerned. Great few days.

Anthony

What a successful weekend for the LivePubPokerLeague, with Dave Burt winning the Main Event, Dan Dennehy winning the PLO Side Event and Steve Kearns finishing second in the NLHE Side Event. All three have experienced significant success in major events previously and continue to play in the LPPL.

Thanks Suzanne appreciate the words - true as 3 handed we had similar stacks 600k v 800k v 700k. all <20bb. However had someone offered me 3rd place before the bubble and going through onto the final table I"d snapped it off such was the position I was in.

Well done to Dave and Guy on 1st and 2nd place.

It has occurred to me that a lot of people may not be familiar with the famous spectator at the final table (or may have forgotten over the years).

Nicky Piper was a world-class boxer from Cardiff who fought for a world title three times, once against Nigel Benn. Apart from the world title attempts, he only lost two other fights in his 33-fight professional career, one to a future World Champion and one to a boxer who fought for World titles both before and after he fought Piper. Nearly all of Piper"s wins were by knockout.

Here we see him keeping a watchful eye on Rodders, the Kempster and Bash in case they start string-betting or playing out of turn.

Nicky is a passionate poker fan and APAT has supported a couple of his charity poker initiatives over the years.  To add to his plaudits, he has also been a long term broadcast commentator on boxing.

Woop.

Fantastic day obviously.  100% free roller from my lppl package made it all the more sweet.  Always love the APAT structure as plenty of time to pick your spots, especially when running 20bigs from level 6 to the FT!!
Then running good and winning my flips towards the business end did the rest.

My first poker medal/Trophy for the shelf and the 3k a very welcome boost with Baby number 2 ready in October. So yet again I wont get to give much of it back. Probably a good thing.  ;D

Thank you to everyone I spoke to at various points. Everyone was polite.
Also thanks to Paxo, for the 1 vrs the rest rail.
