Title: Scotland - Team Discussion
Post by: APAT on August 16, 2008, 21:00:23 PM
This thread should be used to discuss Scotland team selections for the European Team Championship.

Players wishing to be considered for one of four places on the Scottish team should highlight the fact to non playing Captain, Stuart Oliver.

Please bear in mind that Stuart"s selections are likely to be largely based on APAT National Rankings and Championship performances.

Thanks to all those that have offered their congratulations on my selection as Scottish team Captain.

As I will be a non-playing captain I feel I have increased Scotlands chances of winning this event in more than one way!!

With regard team selection I must point out that posting here is not a requirement of selection as not all members use the forum. I will consider all posts/PM"s/emails etc. with nominations and information on potential players. I have also asked Des for some details to get me started and will be contacting some potential players over the following weeks.

The following points however are requirements

1. You must be Scottish (great grandfather once visiting long lost Auntie does not qualify, unlike the national rugby team >:().

2. You must be willing to play in the spirit of APAT.

3. You must be willing to put the team before yourself if required.

4. You should know a little about playing poker (hopefully with a proven track record).

Performance in past APAT events and season 2 rankings will be taken into account but will not be the sole factor in the decision making process.

Congrats once again Stuart on a gr8 appointment.

I have already PM"d you intimating I am free that weekend and would like to be considered.

I am Scottish ;), love the APAT spirit, enjoy playing as part of a team and recently became the Individual winner of the APAT UK Team Championship with my team, RTR, taking 2nd place.

Erm.. I do know a lil bit about poker..I should hope so lol and enjoy everything APAT, be it Online, Regionals and Nationals.

Anyways, good luck in choosing the team for Scotland and I put myself forward for consideration.

Cheers

Totally agree with this, played with him numerous times and he"s solid but can still mix it up. Normally goes well into games and very rarely makes rash decisions. Would"ve had a huge amount of chips in Ireland (120k) with 25 players left, if it wasn"t for someone suckin out with A9 against his AK

thanks guys, im honoured for the vote of confidence from such top APATers  8)

as for the lack of "interest" stuart i think us scots are happy to let you chose YOUR team, rather than all the embarrasin "begging" the other countries players seem to be doin. im sure whoever you pick will be honoured to represent the winning scottish team!  ;D

i also agree that the names put forward to play would do us proud (just keep mickey away from the drink :o)....not because of his play, he plays a mean drunk game lol, but he may ruin the scottish "t" total image  ;)

I think Stuart"s job is going to be very very hard, the Scottish players are a gr8 bunch and full of superb poker players, Mickey you the man! your support, as always, is 1st class and the confidence you give people is amazing, you helped me so much at Blackpool and you have proven yourself to be a player who could bring it home for Scotland.

Billy, I do hope you are up for consideration, when I saw you take down the Edinburgh Regional, I saw one strong, solid poker player who would make a gr8 addition to the Scottish team.

There are lots more out there, Derek Liddle, fab player online and live, he and I play at our local game once a fortnight and be scared if he is at your table, he is a gr8 poker player.

I don"t envy you your job Stuart, once you get player names and stats in you are going to have a headache or 2 sifting through them and making your decision, its a shame you are not going to be a playing captain as you would do Scotland proud.

Thanks for the kind words Mary. With only 4 players there is no way I could justify a place given my recent APAT performances.

If I remember correctly I won about 1k with 2 hands of 8 3 offsuit then lost 10k with KK v AA.  :D

It was a long slog to Day 2 from there but I did suck out against Jon W when he was all-in with QQ (i think) against my A 10 (or something similar). Anyway as far as this thread is concerned he"s English I"m Scottish so thats OK.  ;D

I"m sure you wont be but if you"re struggling for players at the last minute or anything i"d definitely be up for playing in this. I know there"s a lot more qualified than me though so won"t be holding my breath. I have absolutely no APAT ranking at all, however I did make day 2 in the only APAT event i"ve played so far...

I would be up for it but i guess there is stronger contenders out there than me, but got second a scottish qualifier, and qualified online for london, so my apat record is not the worst, If i dodge the suckout I am I can defo mount a charge. But i shall try play my way in next year playing more events. i think the names mentioned above are very nice pick and will reprasent that tartan army well!!

Can anyone tell me when these teams will be announced / finalised as I see no dates published on any of the original posts?

Having spoken to some of those who"ve expressed interest in playing for ""The Mighty Scots", I can understand their concerns about leaving it too late. For those of you who have the honour of picking the teams, please consider that flights and accommodation have to be booked (rarely a good thing to leave until the last minute) and let"s give those who are picked a chance to look forward to it.

Mary "xxMAIRxx" Martin
Billy "BillyHo" Leishman
Chris "CrizzyConnor" O"Connor
Kenny "TheGuy84" McKenzie
Grant "Santino67" Speirs (updated 15:34 on 8th Sept)

have all expressed an interest and availability to play

MickyP "jacklevel06" has posted but not confirmed interest / availability.
James "Eck" Eccles has been mentioned but hasn"t posted himself.
Gordon "GiMac" McArthur again has been mentioned but hasn"t posted.

Players who have not yet responded to a thread which have been live for almost a month obviously can"t make it or simply aren"t as "into APAT" as those above and can"t / shouldn"t be considered IMO.

Once we get through the WCOAP next week Stuart, APAT will provide you with a list of leading Scottish players with their performance data over the season.

I don"t know if the above has been issued and whether you"ve contacted anyone on this basis - please just consider that time is ticking on and rooms and planes are filling up.

No surprise that read here (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=1777.msg31097#msg31097) the Germans appear to have their team picked and are all organised.
Title: Re: Scotland - Team Discussion
Post by: APAT on September 08, 2008, 11:13:19 AM
The season finishes this coming weekend and I would expect the captains to approach their intended selections from that point.  Whether a player has responded to this thread should not have a bearing on their potential selection.
Title: Re: Scotland - Team Discussion
Post by: lukybugur on September 08, 2008, 11:29:54 AM
IMO, this Forum and the emails that are sent out directing us to this website / forum are the two most powerful tools we have for our Members to keep up to date with Events. An email shot to those who have yet to see these posts would be the best way to make sure all APATers are aware of the Event itself. If they then don"t post an interest, will we then assume that they are unavailable to play and get on with picking the teams?

Players above who have posted interest on here over the past month will bring more APAT passion on the day than someone who is cold-contacted a month after applications have started rolling in. Again IMO
Title: Re: Scotland - Team Discussion
Post by: APAT on September 08, 2008, 11:54:28 AM
I don"t think this is an application process.  Stuart will decide how he wants to pick his team (we will give him all Scottish player performance data after the WCOAP) and who he wants in the team.  I would expect him to email those players directly and go from there.  He may go solely on rankings, or not.  It will be interesting to see, but we just need to ensure that he is not restricted in his thinking.

Please bear in mind that Stuart"s selections are likely to be largely based on APAT National Rankings and Championship performances.

I"ve obviously interpreted it wrong ...

I was of the thinking that by posting an interest in wishing to be considered, you would be added to the list from which the Captain would pick from. If 10 players applied wish to be considered, Stuart"s picks would be from those 10 and "likely" based on APAT rankings.

Sorry Des / Stuart, I don"t mean to interfere.
Title: Re: Scotland - Team Discussion
Post by: APAT on September 08, 2008, 13:10:18 PM
You"re not interfering Neil, it"s all good discussion.  :) That intro was put on each of the captain"s threads but one Captain has actually told interested players to not post in his thread, as decisions would be made based on results and other factors when the season was completed.  That should not stop us speculating on who might get a place though.  We also need to bear in mind that a small percentage of the APAT membership use the forum, while many more take part in our events and might be interested in taking part in this one if called up.

In this type of tournament do you have to be born in scotland ??? There is a player you all should look at , he plays at the Gala Casino in merchant city glasgow , and he has taken 1st place 9times in the past 12 tournaments he has entered . He goes by the name of george the greek , but his real name i dont know , but someone had mentioned to me that he has played in the APAT only once , I think he would be a key player to the team for scotland . If interested , let me know and i will ask the Tournament director in casino for more info on him. But like i said , from what i hear he is tearing up the felt in tournament and heads up play .

I play at the merchant and if its the guy im thinkin of, he actually has an american accent!(which he likes to make heard  ;)) i think he is called george the greek cos he owns/runs a greek restaraunt, but im not sure. no doubt des will keep u right when he reads your post.

he won 9 out of the last 12?.....maybe its time for me to make a little re appearance ;D 8)

If he has played one Apat and there are regular players who would like to play why should he be asked to play would be as well going round all the casinos and asking if anyone would like to play.

Even though i obviously aint Scottish totally agreed, Unless the bloke got 40 + plus points in the one tourney he played . It is for the best/highest ranked REGULAR APAT players!

....plus, it sounds as though the guy may well be American, which ends his eligibility to play for Scotland.

Flights have gone up again, and only a couple left before they go up to the next price level.

Are we any closer to the info required for you to then pick your team Stuart.

Wouldnt mind so much but at this time of year and with 1 possible poker event and 1 definite in November and then the man with the big white beard coming in December, costs at a minimum would be preferred.

I know that I may not be selected to represent Scotland but if I do seems a shame to pay the huge difference in travel costs as they escalate daily  >:(

George is also a loudmouth a**e and wouldn"t play in the APAT spirit. This actually doesn"t offend me as I don"t get involved with him but I have seen a number of people being wound up by him and badly tilting.

I am pleased to announce that Mary Martin has agreed to represent the winning Scottish team in the forthcoming European Team Championships.

Mary recently won The Individual Championship at the APAT UK Team Championship, held at the G Casino in Blackpool,  becoming the first female winner of an APAT National event.

I first met a very nervous Mary at the Irish APAT event in Dublin in 2007 where she ran into my full house which took most of her stack. It"s a strange way to make friends but we have since played online and live together at APAT events and Mary"s game has gone from strength to strength. She is always willing to help fellow APAT"ers and I am sure she will do APAT and Scotland proud in November.

Congratulations Mary.

Congratulations Mary!!!

Many thanks to those that have nominated me for this event, in my enforced absence.

Having set up my own business 3 months ago, I had to reduce the amount of poker I was playing for a little while until I could see the trees from the wood. Fortunately, following an initial deforestation process, the business is now up and running and I can resume playing.

I would be more than honoured to be considered for this event, if my name is still in the frame.

Come on the Scots!!!!

I am pleased to be able to announce the second player to join the winning Scottish team is Gordon (GiMac) Mcarthur.

I first met Gordon at an APAT national event in Walsall where he was sat on my left and we were on the tightest table in history. He and I had a lot of fun trying to steal blinds which usually ended up with us heads up. I have played a few times with Gordon since and I rate him as one of the best APAT players not to have won a national event.

Congratulations Gordon

I am pleased to announce that the 3rd player to join the winning Scottish team is Micky (jacklevel) Paterson.

Micky, who won the APAT Onlive championship has been an "APAT"er" since the start and was one of the first players to welcome me when I joined shortly after. We have since travelled to Dublin together in 2007 where he railed me to the semi-final and then I railed him to his final table in a local event that very evening.

At the APAT Scottish championship this year we played together for most of Day 1 and on the way home he commented on my "loose" play. This was from the man that had re-raised me preflop with 8 4 offsuit!!!!

Since leaving my hometown in Scotland, Micky has also officially become the best player in that town.  ;)

Congratulations Micky.

I am pleased to announce that the final player to join the winning Scottish team is Phil Starrs.

Phil, won the APAT Scottish Poker Championship in 2007, part of that prize included entry into the EPT event in Barcelona. He went on to cash in that event, finishing in a very respectable 55th.

Phil"s poker achievements don"t end there. Amoungst many other wins/cashes, this year he finished 18th in the Irish Open and is also a past winner of the Scottish Poker Championships.

Congratulations Phil, you are a great asset to the team.
