Title: APAT All*Stars - Top 200
Post by: Des on December 22, 2015, 14:06:48 PM
As we enter our tenth Christmas, APAT would like to commemorate the occasion by counting down our top two hundred ranked players of all-time!

From our first event at the Broadway Casino, Birmingham (September 2006) to our most recent at Aspers Casino, Newcastle (November 2015) APAT has ran 151 medal events, awarding £1,483,905 in prize money to 1,569 players in the following categories.

APAT

Amateur Championship
UK Team
International Team
Open

WCOAP

Main
Side

Join us over the festive season as we countdown our top two hundred ranked players.  We will publish the scoring formula after we reveal the top ten, but it sensibly allocates ranking points for each of the above categories.

So where do you think you will appear?

Who do you think will make up the prestigious top ten, where each player will receive a five star rating on an exclusive APAT All*Stars card?

Before we start the countdown, how hard was it to get into the top two hundred players?

Players who didn"t make it won a combined 395 medals, with 112 golds amongst that haul.  Special mention to Rod Buckman (420th with 3 golds) and Dan Owston (521st with 3 golds) who didn"t make the list!

Where players had the same number of ranking points, their positions were determined by the highest number of cashes, followed by the highest average field size of the events they cashed in.

Finally, players had to cash in an event to receive ranking points.

That"s it for today folks.  Join us tomorrow when we"ll continue our countdown of APAT's top two hundred ranked players of all time, with the players ranked #91 to #100.

Very interesting thread Des, must have a lot of columns on that spreadsheet. As it"s the time of year for a quiz here"s one for you. Only two players have made the final table of an Apat Main Event and not cashed can you name them?

While I am on, I would like to wish a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to you and the family.

I think there might be more than two Don, but I"m guessing the two you"re referring to are yourself and Dion Burns?

Hope you have a great Christmas Don.

That"s it for today everyone.

Join me for a veritable who"s who of APAT star performers as we countdown from #50 to #21 tomorrow.

There will be a detailed breakdown of every player"s record, while we start to tease who will be in the top 20.
Title: Re: APAT All*Stars - Top 200

Again to give a sense of the achievement of making the top 200.

Approximately the top ten percent of an APAT field cash the event.

To date, 1,569 players have cashed at an APAT event, so there are literally thousands of players who have failed to achieve a single cash since our launch.

To make five, six, seven or eight cashes as some of our players above have done is an outstanding achievement.

A very special mention for our top ranked female player of the past ten years.  In what has been a very difficult year, it"s so nice to see Linda remain an active part of the APAT family following Richard"s passing.

Tony was the 2nd best individual points scorer within the TEAM event NOT the Individual Main event that followed the TEAM Event. There"s no i in TEAM, but there is in Toni Trippier :) xx

p.s. And no, they didn"t know who he was :)

SIMON AUCKLAND

Simon Auckland came to prominence within APAT during season 2, where he made 3 final tables.  Incredibly, the midlander would end up a point short of Darren Shallis in the live rankings for the season, in one of the best head to head encounters we"ve ever seen at APAT.

Simon achieved his best result the following season when winning the Welsh Amateur Championship.

ANDREW TRACEY

Andrew Tracey is another star of yesteryear, scoring in four consecutive seasons starting in 2007.  His best result was the WCOAP Horse Championship in season 3, closely followed by a silver medal at the North American Championship at Caesars Palace in season 5.

DAVE HOWARD

Dave has a well earned reputation as a mixed game specialist within APAT.  His first cash saw him win a WCOAP Omaha Championship in season 2 and he went on to win his second WCOAP title two seasons later in Heads Up.  In addition, he has cashed in Horse, Six Max, Mixed, Open Face Chinese and Team, in addition to NLHE.

IAN THOMPSON

Despite being one of the nicest guys on the APAT circuit, Ian has shown a steely determination to succeed, leading to consecutive ranking points scores in seasons 3 through 8.  A cash finish at the UK Team Championship, or at the season ending WCOAP would see Thompson recording an outstanding 7th consecutive seasonal cash.  Ian"s best result was a WCOAP Stud title in season 4 and runners up team finishes at the season 5 UK Team Championship and season 8 WCOAP World Team Championship.

RICHARD BAKER

With close to 50 events under his belt, Richard Baker can lay claim to being the second most prolific player on the APAT tour with an outstanding 14 cashes.  Similar to Ian Thompson, Baker has scored in consecutive seasons since final tabling the European Amateur Championship in season 3.  One additional score in season 9 will see the popular "degens" leader equal the best ever run of scoring in 7 consecutive seasons.  Baker has 1 title to his name, as a member of the successful Edgworth Cricket Club team that won the UK Pub title in season 5.  The big man was also a member of the England team who took Silver at the season 6 European Amateur Team Championship.

STEVE REDFERN

With 13 cashes and 4 wins, Steve Redfern has worked hard to earn his place at the top end of our greatest players list.  His breakthrough came with victory in the UK Amateur Championship in season 3 and he"s followed that result with victories in the season 3 UK Team Championship and the season 6 WCOAP Cash Championship.  Perhaps the highlight of his APAT career was his England captaincy at the season 6 WCOAP World Amateur Team Championship, where he led his team to victory in a dramatic final playoff with Italy.

MARK DONNELLY

With 5 cashes, Mark would appear to be one of the least prolific of our senior players.  However, when he has played he has gone consistently deep in events, scoring heavily.  He was the star of APAT's first season, making 3 final tables, for 2 Silver medals.  That enabled him to win the season 1 live rankings by a full 13 points from Richard Davies.  Donnelly disappeared from the APAT tour, returning in season 6, where he made a further 2 final tables.

CHRIS WEBBER

Chris first cashed as recently as season 6, but he has had some incredible results since - particularly at the shorter field WCOAP events.  With WCOAP titles in Mixed (season 7) and PLO Hi/Lo (season 8) there is no doubting his skill across multiple game formats.  With 5 cashes in season 7 alone, Webber was able to finish runner-up in the live event rankings, an excellent achievement.  With the WCOAP on the horizon, Chris is a strong favourite to move into APAT's overall top 10 before the season is out.

ANT WILLIAMS

Ant is the highest ranked player at APAT over the past 10 years who has not won a live event.  However, his record of 9 cashes in events with an average field size of over 170 players is high testament to his quality and consistency.  The popular midlander has made 5 final tables, winning 2 medals.  While the Silver he won at the season 2 UK Team Championship stands as his highest finish, it is the Bronze he achieved in the following season"s WCOAP World Amateur Championship main event that will stand as his highest achievement.  Ant outlasted all but one of a 314 runner field to secure his highest ever cash of £3,000 and the respect of his peers.

And so we"ve reached our top ten.

There are multiple rankings that we could have put in front of you to represent who APAT's greatest players of the past ten years have been.

This list is inclusive of all events and the one we consider our most definitive ranking.

We will publish separate ranking lists for APAT main events only and WCOAP only in the coming days, but for today, here are our 10 highest ranked players over the past 10 years, across all events.

You have probably played with these guys many times.  It would be great to hear your views on their strengths and weaknesses, great hands you"ve played against them, what you like about their game, etc - to build our knowledge of how they"ve consistently achieved at a high level over such a long period.

Please post your thoughts below.

CARL PILGRIM

There are few players at APAT with a bigger personality than Carl Pilgrim and nobody with a bigger heart.  Carl recorded his first cash at the season 4 WCOAP, with a 6th place finish in the Omaha Championship.  He has scored cashes in every season since.  Season 6 saw Carl rewrite the APAT record books with back to back victories at the UK and European Amateur Championships, topped off with a WCOAP Bracelet winning performance as a member of the English team who won the World Amateur Team Championship.  Carl would finish that season on top of the live event rankings. Medal finishes at the season 7 WCOAP Antes Only Championship and season 8 WCOAP Shootout cemented Carl"s position in our top 10 players of all time.  We would also note that with over £14,000 in prize money, Carl is the highest earner in APAT history.

PAUL MCGUINNESS

Paul established his name on the APAT tour with low scoring cashes in the Scottish, Irish and English Amateur Championships through seasons 2 & 3.  But he came to prominence in season 4, with 4 cashes, the highlight being his captaincy of the victorious Welsh team at the World Amateur Team Championship.  McGuinness also final tabled the WCOAP Horse Championship and Welsh Amateur Championship in the same season to finish the season ranked in APAT's top 5 live players.  Better was to follow in season 5 when the Welsh team regained their World Amateur title under Paul"s captaincy.  The proud Welshman went 3 better in the WCOAP Horse Championship also, securing Gold and his second WCOAP title in two days.  In season 6 he finished runner up at the English Amateur Championship and followed that up with a third WCOAP Horse final table in season 8.

TOD WOOD

2 1 6 5 2.  If you want to get to the top of the APAT rankings quickly, then you need to follow the Tod Wood formula. The Black Country player has "only" cashed 5 times, but yet he sits squarely in the top 10 players of all time, at #8. The formula?  Finish 2nd, 1st, 6th, 5th and 2nd in events with an average field size of 215 players.  Well, we didn"t say it would be easy!?!  Tod took Gold in the season 4 English Amateur Championship to follow his Silver at the previous season"s UK Amateur Championship.  He went on to outlast 447 players at the season 6 WCOAP main event for the Silver medal and a high cash of £5,900.  He is widely liked and respected across APAT for his deep runs and he has been a popular pick by team captains for many seasons now.

DON ROBERTS

Don Roberts may not be able to walk on water, but the likeable Londoner has achieved plenty else since opening his ranking account on the APAT tour in season 2.  His 9 cashes demonstrate a high level of consistency, while 7 final tables and 5 medals demonstrate powerful play at the business end of a tournament.  Don has runner up finishes at the Aberdeen leg of the APAT Pro League in season 3, UK Amateur Championship in season 4 and WCOAP Stud Championship in season 8, but it was his WCOAP Horse Championship victory in season 8 that brought wide celebration amongst the APAT community.  One of the very good guys of poker had got there in the end, his grin wide, his socks dry.

JAMES EDWARDS

James Edwards is one of the "nearly" men of APAT poker.  To achieve the #6 ranking of all time, while having to deal with "nearly" is some achievement.  And James Edwards is some guy.  Without question one of the most sporting competitors in our member base, and this in an organisation which prides itself - insists even - on sporting behaviour.  So why "nearly"?  We have to go back to season 2 and James" first cash.  He outlasted a field of over 200 runners to finish 4th in the first ever WCOAP main event.  Nearly a medal.  He finished 4th in his next event, at the Welsh Amateur Championship of season 3.  Nearly a medal.  He finished 4th in the season 4 English Amateur Championship.  Nearly a medal.  Further cashes would follow at the English, UK and European Amateur Championships, before he final tabled again in last season"s European Amateur Championship.  Where did he finish I hear you ask?  Need you?  4th.  Nearly.  Sandwiched amongst all of those results, James broke though by winning the Aberdeen leg of the APAT Pro League in season 4, for Gold!  His mistake clear to us all....those amateurs are too tough, he needs to step up and play with the pros.

When putting together this analysis of APAT performance over the past 10 years it became clear that the Welsh are too good.  It"s not that there"s too many of them, but they"re clearly too sharp an the end of day one and too cool as the pressure builds late on day two.  Warren Jones personifies these qualities.  He first came to our notice with cashes in the season 4 (Bronze) and 5 WCOAP Heads Up Championships.  He followed this up with 3 cashes in season 6, including the WCOAP main event and a 4th at the Welsh Amateur Championship.  His big breakthrough however came in season 7 where he struck Gold at the Welsh and English Amateur Poker Championships.  These victories and a cash in the UKCOAP Heads Up Championship enabled him to finish that season at the top of APAT's live rankings.  Last season Warren made the final table of the English Amateur Championship once again and has represented the Welsh team on several occasions.

DARREN SHALLIS

Darren is another of those ferocious Welsh warriors.  A long term legend of APAT, Darren topped the live player rankings in season 2 and again jointly in season 4.  With 9 cashes and 7 final tables, Darren"s pedigree is clear.  We can only speculate how many points he may have scored had he been a regular player on the tour over the past few seasons.  Final tables at the Welsh and English Championships launched Darren"s APAT career in season 2, his promise confirmed with victory in the Irish Amateur Championship later that same season.  He final tabled in his defence of the Irish Championship the following season, falling to Brian Yates - while also cashing the UK Amateur Championship.  Season 4 brought final tables in the Welsh and UK Amateur Championships and a runner up finish in the European Amateur Championship.  Darren recorded his last cash in the season 7 UKCOAP Six Max Championship, finishing 5th of 172 runners.

ANDREW DUNCAN

Remarkably, Andrew Duncan is the only player in our top 10 who scored ranking points in season 1.  While a lot of players have been distracted in the interim, Andrew has consistently churned out result after result.  His 13 cashes are testament to this, a record made even more impressive through 8 final tables.  In fact, only 1 player in the history of APAT has appeared at more final tables.  Andrew"s greatest performance perhaps, was as a member of the winning APAT team, who secured the UK Team Championship title in season 3.  He has been close to securing an individual title on several occasions, most notably the WCOAP Stud Championship in season 5 and the Irish Amateur Championship in season 7, finishing 4th on both occasions.  Andrew"s achievement in being the #3 APAT ranked player of all time suggests that its just a matter of "when" and not "if", for that elusive first individual title.  In the meantime, he"ll continue to hoover up cashes with frightening consistency.

JOHN MURRAY

Many would consider John Murray the greatest player in the history of APAT, an opinion hard to argue given the scale of the Irishman"s record.  The most cashes with 17.  The most final tables with 9.  The most medals, held jointly with 7.  The most wins with 5.  It really is a sensational record and one that saw him become the highest ranked APAT player of all time, overtaking Darren Shallis during season 7.  A position that he held up to October of this year.  John"s story is complex however.  He has been famously successful in team events.  5 of his 17 cashes have been in team events.  He"s been part of the winning team in 4 of those events - 3 of those for Ireland in international events.  This is no coincidence of course, John"s a tremendous player and a clever contributor to team games.  His success rate is phenomenal.  Due to their nature, these events don"t receive the same number of ranking points (3 max) as side events (9 max) and main events (18 max) so while one could argue that he"s lost some side event scoring opportunities, others could argue that he has scored a lot of incremental points in team events.  His individual record is fantastic also.  9 final tables, the highlight being his title winning performance at the UK Amateur Championship in season 4.  Although going close on a couple of occasions, John hasn"t been able to medal 8 of those final tables, which inevitably has allowed the competition to overtake him recently.  There seems little doubt that John will want to recapture the #1 position and his place atop the APAT pile, which should lead to some very exciting poker in the coming months.

STEVE RODERICK

So there we have it, Steve Roderick has secured more ranking points than any other player in APAT history.  This very personable Welshman with the studious approach and a driven, almost mechanical achievement of results. Part man, part machine.  More Riddick than Roderick. Including this season, Steve has now scored points in each of the past 6 seasons.  Starting in season 4, he took Silver from 425 players at the WCOAP main event.  He finished 12th at the Scottish Amateur Championship and had another runner up finish in Ireland.  Those results were good enough for a share of the #1 season ranking with Darren Shallis.  Season 4 brought a Bronze medal in the North American Championship.  Steve added a Bronze medal in the Scottish Amateur Championship in season 6, and he followed that with a final table at the season 7 English Amateur Championship.  Season 8 brought a Silver medal at the WCOAP PLO Championship and a cash at the European Amateur Championship.  Season 9 brought a 4th place finish at the Welsh Amateur Championship and a 10th place finish at the European Amateur Championship.  A result that was significant enough to see Steve leapfrog John Murray into the all time #1 position.  This position will put a new pressure on Steve Roderick and how he deals with that will be very interesting to see.  But there can be no doubt in one area - he is now the #1 ranked APAT player of all time.  We salute his achievement and are proud to call him our precious.

Great work Des, as a relative newbie to APAT, it"s nice to see what I will be up against in future events.

Well done to Rodders, but I do wonder if these are all correct as I heard he has a doppelganger  ;D

Have to say... I was watching the countdown thinking anyone who doesnt play side events has no chance.

Huge respect to John (who I thought would win) but I am totally loving that Rodders has won. I recall folding to him once.... I think...maybe :)

"Final tables for fun" I believe is his hashtag. Congrats Steve xxx

Awesome stats which must have took many hours. Interesting reading and many thanks to all who put the time into it xxx

Congrats to Rodders.

Well deserved for his numerous podium finishes and, not least, his consecutive high finishes this season.

Well done to Des too for a major piece of work.

This has been a great read over the past few days, well done to al the top 200 and everyone else for supporting this organization. it"s been a pleasure to be part of it.

Me and Rodders had a good battle in the WCOAP in season 4 when Ben had the title wrapped up and it was down to me and Rodders for silver and bronze. I still remember a certain had that saw things swing he"s way (still hurts today lol)

Brilliant work Des thanks for spending all the time in putting all this together, has made for some compelling reading.

Huge kudos to Steve in being the #1 spot and the rest of those who have managed to figure in the top 200 players.

Some incredible stats by the top 2!!  :o

Thanks all.  Remember this is just a line in the sand.  There will be lots of movements in the list over the next few months.  It does show the value of scoring a few ranking points regularly.

I will publish the full rankings list tonight, featuring over 1500 players.

Hi Guy"s

First and foremost, great piece or work by Des, really excellent. Thanks for the comments of congratulations.

Was a bit surprised by the result, I obviously knew my results were good and expected to be pretty highly ranked but did not think I was in with a chance of the top spot as I thought John was a dead cert. John has been consistently successful for so long I don"t think anybody can question the fact he is considered the greatest player on the APAT circuit as nobody can touch his record, even if I happen to have more ranking points than him (and that may not be the case for long). All that being said I will happily accept the result. It was achieved with more than my share of good luck and also by luckily being in the position to be able to play a high number of APAT events, there are a number of other players who could easily have done the same in the same circumstances. I have probably played about 30-40 events which is a tiny number and without a lot of luck I could easily not even be in the top 200, When playing online going 40 tournaments without a cash is pretty standard even for a very good player (that is poker).

Des made the very valid point this now puts a bit of pressure on for the upcoming WCOAP (please tell me when that is *lol*). John will probably be planning to take back the number one spot and it would take a brave man to back against him doing just that with his mixed game skills at the worlds. However any player in the top 10 is capable of a run that will raise them to a position to take the top spot, even outside of the top 10 you have Chris Webber (who will almost certainly be top 10 by the end of the WCOAP), Rich Baker, JP Round, Glen Laming, Stu Ward and a number of other all of whom are good enough to go on a run to get right up there. Defending the position in 2016 will be hard but I intend to give it my best shot.

One question do the cards actually exist or are they virtual and can we buy them? I would like the whole top 10 if possible *lol*. Do they only exist for the top 10?

Oh and finally, I am pretty sure I won the season four live rankings outright and it was not a draw *lol* it went all the way down to the last event in Llorett Da Mar and was one titanic battle between myself, Darren and Jack and we were all still in it going into the last event, really enjoyed that season. :-)

http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=5360.0

Have a great New Year people and look forward to getting back to it in 2016.

Do they only exist for the top 10?

No, 1 poor guy got the rub for not being top 10....

Massive congrats Rodders, im not sure i will ever be able to play enough seasons to catch you, especially with your consistent results, but as long as Apat run their brilliant WCOAP events i"m sure as sh!t gonna try!
Title: Re: APAT All*Stars - Top 200
Post by: Des on December 27, 2015, 18:05:51 PM
Just to confirm the scoring mechanism that we used to compile the rankings.

1)  The rankings are for live events only, so previously published seasonal lists may differ.

2)  Points have been allocated on the back of a cashes made, so a player finishing 8th in a side event, without cashing, does not receive ranking points or final table credits.

3)  Points were allocated in medal events as follows:-

- APAT & WCOAP main events - 18pts for 1st position, down to 1pt for 18th position.

- WCOAP side events - 9pts for 1st position, down to 1pt for 9th position.

- Team events (representing a team) - 3pts for 1st position, down to 1pt for 3rd position.

- Team events (individual leaderboard) - 9pts for 1st position, down to 1pt for 9th position.

- Players outside of the above positions, who still cash - 1pt

4)  Where players are level on ranking points, the list is then sorted in order of a) number of cashes, b) average field size and c) number of buy ins won.

Correction

One event had been omitted from the rankings list, the 2008 WCOAP Stud Championship.  3 players scored points in this event as follows:-

9pts - Owen Rankin
8pts - Dave Howard
7pts - Charles Sanderson

The most notable difference sees Dave Howard moving from #18 to #14, while Steve Redfern, Richard Baker, Ian Thompson and JP Round move down 1 position.

The updated top 200 list follows.

Title: Re: APAT All*Stars - Top 200
Post by: Des on December 27, 2015, 18:47:05 PM

Congrats to Rodders.

Well deserved for his numerous podium finishes and, not least, his consecutive high finishes this season.

Well done to Des too for a major piece of work.

Thanks John.  If I"d had the time over the past few months to publish this piece of work, you"d have been on top - as you have been for the past couple of years.  That"s clear for all to see.

That said, I"m sure this sort of visibility will motivate players to scrap hard for points in the coming months, and that"s what you do best!  So I"m really look forward to seeing how Steve and yourself can protect your positions in the coming months.

Thanks Steve.

With regards your specific questions:

The cards are virtual at this time, and available only for the top 10 and our poster boy. ;)  We will shortly announce a development of All*Stars that will allow players to earn their own cards, both virtual and physical.  We"re pretty excited about this, more to follow.

You certainly did win the S4 rankings in one of our most dramatic finishes ever.  My comment related to how points were allocated in the season with this specific scoring mechanism.  So slightly different.  We had a very dramatic finish to S1 also, which finished level after all live and online events were completed, requiring a shootout....

Great piece of work - very interesting thanks for all the effort thats obviously gone into this.  Sorry to be a pain looks as if Ive got 2 entries - Michael Gale 276th and Mike Gale 645th. Combined total sneaks me into top 100 I think. Dont worry if a lot of work to correct.

Hi Des

enjoyed looking at this but I have suffered from the use of my Sunday name as well as my aka name. I`m in 87th and 376th which when put together gives me 41 pts ........on a par with the great Stu Ward..... if only I could match his alcohol intake.

Hugh/Shug Cairnie

Thanks Shug, you"re up to #39.

Thanks Des but sorry to be a pain I also have a 3rd place (with a Bronze medal) from an online championship.
ps if you get the dates right for the end of year extravaganza I might just make my first event of the year and be able to thank you personally.

Hi Shug - no worries, but unfortunately this ranking list excludes all online events.  I need to hear more about this end of year extravaganza!!

Always loved the APAT and I think I might make my return in 2016, so lookout.... THE LUCKBOX is coming back. Glad I made the top 50 in 38, still trying to get higher than Tim M.

Congratulations to Ant Williams for entering the top 10, courtesy of his part in Midlands Ballbusters second place finish at the recent UK Team Championship.
