You"re running around 5 minutes behind everywhere this week Steve!  :D

Revised pricing has been introduced for the Online Championships to keep them as inclusive as possible.

F*&^ing b%^&^"$ s$%%

I made a commitment to myself to play each and every APAT game this season to go for it with ranking points...... and next Satuday is the very first online round, and I can"t wait...... except I"ll be refereeing a swimming gala on Saturday night until 9pm, then another one on Sunday that starts at 8am, and for which I have to leave the house with my son by 6.30am!!

Ho hum - gonna miss the first event.... what a start to the season :(

I know it"s awkward, we want to play all the events but it"s difficult.
The regional league is gonna get me, every other Sunday at 8pm. I"m expecting a new seris of Lost on Sky1 soon, and if I"m not sat with my missus watching that then I will be well and truely in the doghouse.
I am by far the oldest 25 year old I know.

Don"t forget having your Online Championship medals presented in front of 200 runners at the following APAT National Championship, or might that be a bad thing  ::)

I must admit, there is a lot of excitement with the build up to the first major event of season 3.  With currently 65 direct buy-in"s adding to the 44 who qualified earlier in the week, that"s 109 in total with 9 hours to go until kick-off.

It reminds me a bit of FA Cup final day.  I suppose I had better go an register.   ;D

Prize Clarification

Blue Square have informed APAT that they will be unable to deduct a sum from the prize pool to enable the three medalists to each receive an entry to the UK Amateur Poker Championship in Walsall for the top three.

Each of the top three will now be paid their full prize money and receive an option to purchase a seat at the event in Walsall.  If they wish to take a seat, they should notify customer@apat.com, before Thursday January 15th.

UK Online Championship medal presentations and interviews will be conducted in Walsall.

This is my first APAT online tournament and I"m thrilled to be here, especially qualifying for $5 in the rebuy earlier this week.

If it"s anything like the live games, I"m fully expecting to have my pants pulled down around my ankles and pushed off the edge of a cliff before two hours are over!  :)

Be kind to the little one.....

Some people aren"t used to starting with so many chips...

Some people aren"t used to EVER having so many chips....

No need for that :D

I"m talking about all-ins on the river with AK when the K comes on the river.  The fact someone else had flopped quad jacks was irrelevant to them.

call after a limp pot with 47o OTB (hehe)

flop 7 4 2

call the pot sized bet from the original limper

turn 9

money goes in (she had 7K to my 12K)

she has 88  :D
river 2 :(

looking for a decent spot now

I still love rags on the button though

Out in 95th.

Done by GoonerDK.

First time to double him up, second time to knock me out.  Both times though, I"m racing AK v underpair all-in pre flop.

Each time there"s a king on the board and also a matching card to turn his pair into trips.

Oh well, good luck all left in.  Great tournament.

it"s called LUCK mate - it sometimes happens in poker.  ;)

i recall an occasion early on on the FT where you got lucky!

can"t believe some of the bad comments made about the eventual winner tonight.... "someone knock this donk out", not a desrved victory" etc..... the guy won fair and square.... may have got a bit lucky but there is no way you can completely luckbox your way through that tournament tonight.

I definetly dont remember me giving a suckout when I was 5% to win. But what can I say, used to it by now on big final tables.

Definetly not disputing the fact that everyone must have played excellent poker to carve through that field but the fact the final table was taken down by bad play getting rewarded is a shame. And may I point out that I never called the eventual winner a donk. Maybe that is APAT/Blue Sq"s fault for a poor structure that had the last 50 or so players were playing out an all-in fest. Definetly think the structure needs reviewing.

GG everyone, I really enjoyed the tournament but obviously with poker tour packages added to the top three, 400 odd dollars is not enough to take away the sick feeling i have at the moment.

I do think it was a great tournament, but it did become very much allin or fold poker! there was very little play in the end.
Title: Re: APAT UK Online Championship - Saturday 10th January 8pm - Discussion
Post by: APAT on January 11, 2009, 01:33:40 AM
TheGeeny87 came to the final table as the chip leader with 478k.  Shortly after the start, he was extremely unlucky to lose a 324k pot when his pocket Aces lost to BadCawl"s King Ten (all in pre flop), when a Ten hit the flop and River.

As far as I could see, TheGeeny87 choose to aggressively play out the tournament, rather than ladder up and while he got lucky in a couple of big hands, he met his objective and raised everyone off the table.

Anyone moaning about this, particularly from the rail, should examine the level of luck involved in their chosen game imo.

APAT will certainly look at the latter levels to see if we can smooth the crunch points.  Inevitably, it has to hurt somewhere along the line.

Right, so Gloucestershire and East Sussex 1st and 2nd.  I make that a right result for the Southern Players.  Bring on the National League.   ;D

Are they players that have signed up to clubs, Leigh ?

Nothing like a bit of controversy to start the season off, I"m sure that each and every one of us have got lucky and sucked out on more than one occasion.

I think the structure is pretty good and as Des says there will always be a point in most tourneys when the blinds bite to the point where its push/fold poker. But then again playing good push/fold poker is a bit of an art in itself.

When considering tweaking the structure I"d like to see the following

1. 15 min levels

2. a 75/150 level put in

3. the 750/1500 level replaced with  600/1200 and 800/1600 levels

4. a 1200/2400 level put in

This would probably have the tourney running for 6 - 7 hours but, given the new level of prestige and added value that these tourneys now have, most players would probably be happier with a slightly slower smoother structure.

As an afterthought, given that BSQ tourneys now support antes, we could have an identical structure as the live nationals with the level lengths being the online equivalent to 45 minutes live!

Also well done to theGeeny87. Noone can totally luckbox a tourney this big. I thought some of the comments were unfair (not that he cares I"m sure - good luck in the GUKPT and at Walsall). There are a lot of difficult decicions to make when stack sizes are so varied and blinds are so big.

A lot of these "bad play rewarded" comments are generally "results orientated" comments and a lot of the time are "correct play...bad outcome...oh look I"ve dogged him on the river anyway" type situations

Well, that"s the closest on the finishing time.  Nice prediction Laxie.   ;D

Weeeeeeeee, managed to get something nearly right tonight anyway.  lol  Had planned to rail, but got comfy on the sofa for a bit and only just woke up.

Well done to the cashers and top 3.  No easy task to get through that lot.

Im not goin to bother posting my bad beat story here but if any of you were watching the final table then u will prob agree based on the stage of the tournament and the play pre-all-in, that has got to be the sickest beat I have ever had in my 2 and a half years playin poker.

it"s called LUCK mate - it sometimes happens in poker.  ;)

i recall an occasion early on on the FT where you got lucky!

can"t believe some of the bad comments made about the eventual winner tonight.... "someone knock this donk out", not a desrved victory" etc..... the guy won fair and square.... may have got a bit lucky but there is no way you can completely luckbox your way through that tournament tonight.
Everyone"s a cardrack at some point!

Just looked at Des" tourney report.  Apologies in advance if I"ve got this upside down and inside out, but while the Queen/10 v Queen 5 hand must have stung a bit,  if I read it correctly and the money went in on the flop, you"re not 95% to win if that"s the hand you"re referring to.

You"re just under a 4/1 favourite - pretty much the same as getting aces cracked really.  Same with Ace-Ten against Ace-Jack, if it went in pre-flop you"re something like 3.5/1 favourite I think.  Bummer those too hands coming in such close proximity and at that stage, but I think a real b*llock shrinking true bad beat you have to be at least 90% to win.

Well done to all those who cashed, scored ranking points, finalled and ultimately got in the silverware. Congratulations! A tough field to say the least!

My views on the controvesy:

1) Bad beats are a part of poker- get over it!!! I don"t care if he hit a one outer on you- shake the guys hand (metaphorically of course) and type good game

2) The structure for a 55$ tourney with a seat to the GUKPT on top was superb. Personally we could improve the structure. We could start with 100k chips, 1 hr clock and a graduated structure but there"s plenty of play- inevitably in any tourney no matter how good the structure you have to win races/start shoving etc.

Well done to Des and the team for making the online tourneys something worth playing for once again

See everyone hopefully in Feb.

This.

The large starting stack and decent 12-minute levels means that the tournament lasts longer, and you don"t have to get involved too early (compared to the usual tournaments).

BUT, there comes a point where you jump from an average stack with 30-odd BBs or so, and then one fold later after a bet, and a blind level increase and you"re down to 10BBs and in push-or-fold mode.  This also means that the skill element is reduced later in the tournament (although of course there is a skill to playing correctly in these situations).

Antes reduce the severity of the jump in blinds.  It encourages more play (as there"s more in the middle worth stealing, but you can still afford to make "normal" bets and fold if necessary).

This was an issue to a degree in the live Nationals, and the introduction of antes means that the structure is now almost perfect.  As BlueSQ can now use antes, it would seem a shame not to have them for the online nationals.

All in my opinion of course.

I don"t think the structure needs touching. Anyone who had had their head screwed on had the opportunity to play a lot of proper poker before the shoving started and most tournaments will reach a stage where players are pressurised into committing anyway.
Whilst I didn"t rail the final table, I did notice a lot of players whinging about bad beats and berating fellow competitors earlier in the tournament. We cant blame players new to APAT for not realising the spirit we normall play in, because there were some well known names making less than complimentary comments. This won"t affect my participation in future events but will make things less enjoyable.
If you are on the the receiving end of a bad beat, grow up, it happens to everyone and its of no interest to anyone else. The next time it happens, shut up, log off and leave everyone else to enjoy themselves. I"m sure the tables will be reversed next time.

We"re talking about the severity of the change.  Antes help achieve this.  Why have they been introduced into the live Nationals?

I didn"t mind the structure lastnight it allowed for plently of play early on but when it got to low M shove and fold I loved it.  As Kinboshi says there is still an art to this and it is very typical of final tables, luck plays a part but thats karma.

Saying that, I love antes and as Tom Dwan said on PAD the other night - a NLHE tourney is not a game without antes.

The reason we ended up with a FT full of low M"s was that play was not being forced and the stacks allowed the blinds to catch them up.  Antes will force the issue and should ensure a more natural NLHE game.  Antes have to be sized right though I was in another tourney lastnight where the antes got upto a 1/3 of the SB, 1/5 is usually suffice 1/4 max.

Plenty of excitment for the first event of the year. I cant wait till the next one.

I think the structure does need tweaked in some way (same criticism for many online events) you get to the end and end up loosing with  ad ah vs a correct (given the format) kc jc push.

Given the stacks and structure it is a great play ... but with slower blinds you have to play it differently ... at the moment you play 4 hours and then have a gun fight at the end ...

It is annoying to have your aces cracked but it is always going to happen with the current structure. On a Saturday night I would be happier to have a final table with slower blinds. (Re-set the blinds at final table? - I believe this was done for an event which was online until the final table last year)

The best player would be more likely to win - very likely not me - but it would make for a more interesting challenge.

Well played to the medalists - I have a new nemisis - but I look forward to reversing roles in future events.

well played all and well done them that made the final table and i thought the winner played well he got lucky a couple of times but got his aces beat as well on the final table we all need a bit of luck to win these thing just when someone gets it on the final table its a big thing but all the people that made the final table will have had some luck somewhere in the tournament last night
on the binds from about 5 tables out most people had less then 10 big blinds which was a bit soon a couple more levels might help or 15 min binds but all in all another good apat hope to see you all in walsall

All tourneys are won with a combination of skill and a big slice of luck. Anyone who tells you he has won a tournament without luck is a liar. If luck wasn"t a big part of the game the top players would win all the time. But they don"t.
So people slagging off fellow players when they got lucky is very poor form, just suck it in, don"t comment and play the next hand. We have all suffered bad beats, bad calls and horrendous rivers, but if you play this game you better get used to it!!
So I say to last nights winner, well played fella, I hope to play you in Walsall and the next online events, and hope that I might get lucky and win one of these fabulous APAT events later in the season.

... luck is of course a big factor but why make a structure that tips the weighting away from skill?

The event could easily start earlier or end later - there seems to be an unwritten code that everyone needs to get to bed for 1 a.m.

I think if you are playing face to face getting home is a pretty reasonable criteria, but if you are online what is the issue?

The tournament has a great structure for the first 2/3 hours but then becomes a gun fight.

Of course I know that before I start but if the idea of the APAT is perhaps to prepare people for the big time (perhaps it"s not) then a slower structure would be great. Stretch it two more hours or create the pace by adding in antes (which gives more incentive to steal from earlier positions).

I agree there is no point in bemoaning bad beats but less of these at a slower pace.
