Jesus -- tough one I could be way off the mark but I"ll say
approx 40 years - approx 30 event each year over that time (50 odd now) - approx 300 paid
= 360,000
like I say could be way off the mark

Given that you"re bringing it up, I"ll go for a milestone 500,000

Didnt they start off with about 5 events and only 20 players

yes so the early years would have been low but the latter years must more than make up for it. Although I am still probably low .

... when I set the question I thought I had an answer ... perhaps someone else can google a correct answer ... though I expect the number is more like 10,000.
The numbers of runners is startling.
1970 - year 1 - 6 Runners (Only a Main Event)
1980 - Main Event - 73 Runners - 12 Events
1990 - Main Event - 194 Runners - 15 Events
2000 - Main Event - 512 Runners - 24 Events.
2003 - Main Event - 839 Runners - 36 Events
2006 - Main Event - 8773 Runners - 47 Events
... here is a list of the top 5000 Cashers ... in the WSOP ... but I think there are an undefined amount of ties for one cash each ...

Question how many people have cashed once ... especially in the early years lost of the runners similar across the events.
My friend Humberto has cashed 54 times ... 7th in the all time list!

So it is now a dual quiz:
Guess the answer!
Find the answer!
I would be surprised if over 15,000 though.

...and 4308 before this year"s ME starts http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/ranking/352

... but lots of duplicates ... which are hard to estimate ... I will attempt to research later ... I think 15k might be good ...

You would. Of 4345 cashers so far this year, 833 are multiple cashers and 108 have cashed 4 times or more. Many of the single cashers would have also cashed in other years.

I sent an email to The Hendon Mob database guys to see if they have an answer for me ...
Randomly 118 118 texted me to give me a free question ... which of course they could not answer ... "there is no published data" ... or so they say ...
I will be interested in what comes back.

Total WSOP prize money paid out has just broke the billion $ barrier.
No need to thank me, Tikay posted it.

Rob from the Hendon Mob came back with the following estimate!
16363

True at July 16th.
Have a look at the list quickly as required as it will soon go back to the top 5000.
