Title: WAS I IN THE WRONG ?
Post by: BOINGBLITZ on August 03, 2009, 03:29:16 AM
Playing the £50 tourney at Walsall on Sunday, the chipleader, a mouthy guy to be honest, took a dislike to a young guy who was moved 2 seats to his right.
Within the first couple of hands Mr Mouth was calling him "An Internet player", despite the young guy insisting he didnt play on the net. A clash was inevitable as the young guy could play.
Mr mouth eventually came over the top of a raise and the young guy, putting him on air, called with  ad1   tc .

Mr Mouth didnt have air and tabled   qd    qs

The flop came down   8d   9c    :3d:

turn brought the  jd  before the river ended it with the    7h

Mr Mouth said "Bye-Bye Son" and the youngster began to walk......until I piped up and said "He has hit the straight" which the dealer had missed, as had the rest of the table (I believe)

Mr Mouth was fuming, telling me I was out of order, despite the fact that earlier, on an 8-8-6 board, I had heard him discussing what he had passed when one player was contemplating whether to call a raise.

My question is....WAS I wrong to pipe-up when I was not in the hand ??

The young guy was wrong to call a reraise from a local live tourney player, unless clearly priced in. They never bluff reraise. Ever.

In a tourney, the tabled cards speak and it is everyone"s duty to assist the dealer. So, the answer is "no", you weren"t in the wrong.

Not in the wrong, and Mr Mouth deserves a slap for trying to claim a pot that he didn"t win.  As Paulie said, the cards speak and it doesn"t matter who pipes up to point the straight out to the dealer.

Sounds like you were at a table of people who could play poker well... :D

We had a similar episode in another thread. I think the conclusion was

tourneys: pipe up, cards speak, well done brian!
cash game: keep shtum!

Clearly you were right Brian but it is frustrating when it occurs. It happened to me recently when I had got it in with a high pair and thought I had won until a spectator pointed out a random straight that the other guy had hit, which no-one at the table had seen, and which meant I was out. Although you know he is right, you feel like braining the pointer-outer.

There is a difference between mouthy arrogant and mouthy exuberant.

Exact same thing happened in the APAT game at Edinburgh.  You are perfectly right to pipe up - the cards speak for themselves.

Some people say that this only applies in Tourneys, but not in cash - I disagree...... IMO in poker, the cards speak, and if ni a showdown situation, the best hand wins.

Never in a million years would I point out a mistake in a cash game - you never know who might be waiting for you when you leave....

I don"t understand this attitude.  If someone was dealt three cards and you saw it - would you say?  If someone was missed out in a deal and only given one card, would you say?  If the button wasn"t moved, would you say?

If the cards are turned over and I"m in a hand and I"ve lost but the chips are being pushed to me - I"ll bloody well pipe up and say that I don"t have the winning hand.

i have seen episodes like this, someone has a straight and doesnt realise it. gets up and leaves, etc. one table i was railing the people said "if hes to dumb to miss his straight then dont tell him anyway". but someone called him back which was fair enough imo.

If both hands have been tabled then you should definitely speak up whether it"s a tourney or cash game.  If however the mouthy guy had turned over his QQ, and you happen to see that he has the straight but is about to muck then you should keep quiet.
