Title: S3 APAT National League - Grand Final Discussion
Post by: Chipaccrual on October 19, 2009, 11:56:24 AM
The culmination of the Season 3 APAT National League will take place on Sunday 15th November 2009 at 8pm, exclusively on Blue Square Poker.

After twenty gruelling matchdays, the top ten teams will be represented by their best four players to battle it out for the title.

The poker club which wins the National League will receive four entries to a Grosvenor UK Poker Tour main event, to be awarded to the four members who played in the National League final.

Should any of these four players go on to cash in their chosen GUKPT main event, then 20% of their GUKPT prize money will be retained as a secondary prize for their poker club team mates, and paid out in line with individual National League points scored during the Season Three campaign.  For example, players who did not score any league points will not be eligible for a share of GUKPT prize money.  Similarly, players who won a GUKPT seat as part of the National League winning team will not be eligible for a share of any secondary prize money, should they not cash with their own GUKPT entry.

The four members of the top three teams in the Online National League will receive APAT National Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to commemorate their achievement.

Chat on Blue Square Poker is only available to those playing, so post on this thread to give your support in the build up and during the event.

The final is made up of the top 3 teams in each division and the best 4th place team, which will be from the Central league as they cannot be caught by the other two divisions.

So, ten teams, top four players from each team, 40 players in total.  Battle it out for the medals and GUKPT seats.

Similarly, players who won a GUKPT seat as part of the National League winning team will not be eligible for a share of any secondary prize money, should they not cash with their own GUKPT entry.

what is the thinking behind this looks a little unfair to any of the 4 players if they dont cash, they might have played in every league and get nothing of the team 20% and someone might play 1 league game get 1 point and get some cash

for me the team 20% should be for all players that have scored points

I can see your point here Al (plus all those in agreement). It certainly sems unfair not to get a share of the dough, while muppets like me, not good enough to qualify for the final, get to rake it in.

I think the reasoning behind this decision is that all 4 players have had the chance to play in the GUKPT. This is a prize worth £1060 each and the chance to keep 80% of your winnings.

the only reason i can see why apat say that any of the 4 dont get any of the 20% is that they dont want it to look like they might be playing as a team when they play in the gukpt

If any of my lads want to give the GUKPT seat to me after we win them, feel free and we will exchange the winning percentages.....can"t see that happening though somehow.....the exchange that is...NOT us winning.

Could someone please give me a clarification on the qualification for the winning teams?

If 2 players are tied as the 4th best points scorers for any team (as I currently am in South London with MarkyPB) how is the tie broken?

Cheers

Final Qualification: Players

10 - The top four players in descending order of individual points will qualify to represent their clubs in the National League final.  Where players finish with an equal number of individual points, final team selection will be sorted in the following order:  a)  The player who has scored individual points in the greater number of matches will be deemed to finish ahead.  Should this not separate the players, b) The player who has scored the highest single individual points will be deemed to finish ahead.  Should this still not separate the players, c)  A playoff will be organised between the appropriate players at Blue Square prior to the National League final.

The thinking behind the prize money allocation is as follows.  If player 1 cashes, but not players 2, 3 or 4, then because they have so many individual points from the league, they will take by far and away the majority of the 20%prize money allocation, leaving little for their team mates.  For that reason their prize is the seat and the opportunity to win 80% of whatever prize money they may win.  It"s in their own hands. So when the 20% is allocated, the points scored by the top four players will be discarded and the prize money allocated in ratio to the remaining points scorers.

Yea, tbf, this makes a lot of sense wen explained!!  Im sure that teams can come up with their own arrangements regardless - so this is certainly the fairest way of doing it!

i agree with the original rules as well, whether i win a seat on my team or not.

Let"s face it if you are lucky enough to win the team event and be a member you get a GUKPT seat for free whilst getting to keep a good % of winnings, it is effectively in your hands.

If the 4 team members are to share in each other then they should arrange to swap pieces out of their % prior to start of play.

Is it possible for a thread to be only seen by a select few?

E.g.  Can you set up a thread for the ten Poker Clubs that only members of that club and access?

Er Why?? I am intrigued.

On another matter. The final. Okay so ten teams, 40 players, 4 tables. Is the seating going to be random, or at least at the beginning have one member from each team on each table? Obviously this would be the preferred alternative.

Too complicated to do as it would require setting access to all those in the ten clubs, which is heading on for 200 people.

Sorry.

Totally agree, and in an ideal world that is how it would start.  However, we are in the hands of Blue Square on this one.  If it is technically possible for them to do it, then we will.  We could do a manual draw for tables and let them know.

Not sure if they can do that, but we will try.

Ahhh, you mean just those that are playing in the final.  Sorry, I misunderstood.  It could be done, but this is a team event, and I"m sure all those that are in a club that has qualified for the final would want to comment on their team mates and get involved.

Happy to try and oblige if enough want a separate thread for qualifiers.

At first I was thinking for everyone in the club but as you said doing it for 200+ would be too much so I thought of just the people playing in the final.

I like the idea of 1 team player per table if this could be done?  It would be a nightmare if 4 players from the same team ended up on the same opening table

But I suppose it will be in the hands of the poker gods.

Des has asked one of us to post the basics ... and, well, I"m here so ...

The Final will be an MTT

We are currently asking BlueSquare to set this up for us so you MAY not have to register - it will just appear in the Lobby.

The points system will work as;

20 places earn points (20th-1pt, 1st-20pts), the team with the most points will win the 4 GUKPT seats.

An official announcement and dedicated thread will be posted later.

Further information relating to the APAT National League, Grand Final........

The tournament will be in the BlueSquare lobby this afternoon, and we"ve asked that all the players be pre-registered.

The final has been set up in the same format as previous Online Championships - MTT freezeout, but with 10,000 starting chips and 10 minute blinds.

Wow 10,000 chips! Can"t wait for this now, particularly as I have just been shut out of the GUKPT side event in Blackpool tonight, sold out at twelve today! Very disappointed, the plus point is I will have an extra £100 to splash about in Luton!!  ;)

It is now in the Blue Sq. lobby and I have checked and all the South London team are there.

Just one observation. This is a freeroll and therefore you could have the situation that someone could play for hours win the thing and yet due his/hers team mates poor finishing positions end up with nothing, not even BFH. Personally would have been happy to have paid to enter at least the winner/top finishers will have something to show for their efforts.

Oh and the blinds are set at 10 minutes?

not complaining about the above set up but does seem strange to play 20 tournaments at one format and then have the final in a completely different format

id also agree with a buy in for cash prize as that would help reduce team collusion

You think so? The main prize is a GUKPT main event seat, I don"t think anybody is going to put a $150 first prize before that, do you? Any way, of what collusion do you speak?

I gotta say, surely being a TEAM event, looking after members in your TEAM doesn"t count as collusion...... if so then the whole thing is farcical !! Why would i want to KO members of MY TEAM , when thier doing well could ultimately decise whether I..and "WE" as a team win them or not  ? ?

Because we have no side prizes to play for it will be interesting to see what players do that have no chance of winning (because their team mates are out or their team can"t win) but still have plenty of chips. Will they be interested to carry on late into the night to keep the rest of the players honest or will we see some players having a wee bit of fun whilst the rest are trying to play their A game? Perhaps they will sit out and just blind away. There are quite a few possibilities most of which I don"t like, and introduces a different dynamic that certainly wasn"t present during the league games.

Removing any kind of side incentive was a mistake IMHO and could make the game farcical at times. I hope I"m wrong.

agreed...... although folding aa preflop to avoid knocking out a team mate may be the only way that you still have a chance of winning (the only prize) In this situation do you fold knowing that you can no longer win? or do the "right" thing? what indeed is APATs line on this? Are we to be asked to commit poker suicide to adhere to a corinthian spirit?

This has been a brilliant league and it is a shame that a the finale with a fantastic prize has been devalued with this uncertanty.  TYVM to Apat for a superb league series whatever the result.
Title: Re: APAT National League - Grand Final Discussion
Post by: Chipaccrual on November 15, 2009, 13:04:30 PM
Okay guys, looks like it"s down to me to clarify a view points.

Firstly, the structure that we have gone for is aimed at giving players a bit more play in what is the end of season finale.  As far as the seating draw goes, it is random and we have had to go with this due to Blue Square software issues.  We looked at other options, and spoke with the relevant club captains, before taking a majority view.  For your information, the only way to ensure a different player from each club on each of the 4 starting tables was to play 4xSTT with a double shootout type of structure.  Going by the comments about us changing the structure anyway, glad we didn"t go with this one.   ;)

I"m not sure that making it a $10 tournament would have any influence on how the tournament will play out.  What"s a $400 prizepool when there is over £4k of GUKPT seats up for grabs ?  And this is the grand final that players have qualified for, so making them pay up seems not quite right.

How will players react if they are the only player left in their team with a lot of chips and little chance of winning ?    Well, points are awarded at 20th place on onwards.  If we are at a point of 20 player, I am chipleader and all my team-mates are out, then my thought would be the maximum points I can get are 20, will that be enough to take it down ?  Don"t know, might get us medals though ?  It"s quite a prestigous event to win, bearing in mind you are playing against the best 40 players in the league.

And finally, collusion, softplay and chipdumping.  We realise that this is a team event.  So far the league has mostly been played in the spirit which we had hoped, and I cannot think of an instance where play has crossed the line as far as collusion goes.  No one is going to want to knock out a team-mate, so there is going to be an obvious case of finding a balance.

There will be a lot of eyes on this tournament tonight, and any suggesting of chipdumping will be dealt with strongly by APAT.  As for folding AA when up against a team-mate, well, in my opinion, you have to make the decision that is right for your team.  A lot of it comes down to pot commitment and the table dynamics.

We cannot stop MSN, Skype, text messages, phonecalls between players, but I would hope that APAT players are above that and show some respect for each others game.

I"m sure everyone of the players playing tonight will play in the correct spirit and with the structure in place, the best team will win out and take down the GUKPT seats.

Good luck everyone.

I"m not sure how well I do clarify it, but on the example you give of having AA preflop against my team-mate, I"m folding and happy that I"m not cheating anyone and playing in the best interests of my team.  Unless my team-mate has significantly more chips than me, then I"m sticking the aces in his eye and hoping he doesn"t bust me with K4o.   ;)

you clarified it fine!  I would not fold aa against someone from another team- therefore it is a form of soft play or tsctical play- as long as we know this is not against the rules we can do it. It makes sense in a team situation, but not in a pure poker sense. ( the only other situation where it would be sensible is on the bubble in a qualifier). For hte record I would not have done it in the earlier rounds. I just want to make sure that all is above board and that we all know what is acceptable and what isnt.

I hope that won"t be determined by how far your team goes Dan?

Please remember it is a level playing field for all teams and it is the APAT National Final, so it is a much bigger event than the league stages.  If a team doesn"t get it right tonight, there is no coming back in two weeks time.

Be aware also that several major potential sponsors are viewing this thread and the S4 thread including Blue Square, assessing the value APAT could bring to them next season, so you guys are representing more than just your clubs tonight and I expect the APAT ethos to be carried through to the end.

No it won"t, and apologies, maybe Joke wasn"t the best word to be used. Just a little concerned that as already pointed out, 2 major factors may come into play

1. if a club has 3/4 of its players on the same table, could prove advantageous....

2. if a player is the only one left from a club, and believes he is playing with no hope of winning anything........

again, i appreciate the difficulty you guys have  and re-iterate the fact that the league has been fantastic fun from start to finish,  and even with the   low buy in i have found myself wanting to put probably more effort into the league events, than in higher stake events that i usually play. i plan on continuing that ethos into tonight and will give 100%.

Thanks Dan.  For what it"s worth, I agree with you on both counts and we offered captains options to avoid both of those scenarios prior to finalising the structure for this evening.  What you"ll play this evening was the almost unanimous decision of the club captains.

As with everything we do, APAT will look very closely at the way the tournament runs this evening and ensure that we take on board any learnings to continually improve the experiences we give our members.

Good luck to the lot of you tonight!!!  I will mostly be in the pub, but might get back in time to rail the final table at some point.  Whatever the outcome, you all did great to get to the final!   :)

I certainly play as a sub for the team tonight but I"m guessing it"s to late to sort out with BlueSq  ???

Unfortunately, it is not a Bl Sq problem.  It"s substituting the user, not the Blue Square Player, if that makes sense.

From what I have understood from Kenny, the problem here is not being able to contact the player, so without his consent it"s an unfortunate situation.

However, we all love an underdog, and taking this down with three live players certainly would be a story.  Actually, what if your missing player folded his way into the points.  Now there"s a thought.   ;)

just want to echo the sentiments that any criticism on the posts certainly was not meant as anything but constructive and that the league has been a great experience and as a relative newbie when i started was certainly made to feel welcome and i enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.

Personally im just looking forward to the experience, as the standard of play has been higher than i usually play its certainly helped improve my game and tonight will only serve to benefit

good luck to all

Okay then.  All debating put to one side, we are ninety minutes away from kick-off in the APAT Online National League Grand Final for this season.

For those without access to Blue Square, we"ll try and update what"s going on using this thread.

So, who"s your money on to take this down and bag the four GUKPT seats ?

You"ve got until the 8pm start time to post your predictions for the top 3 clubs.  Anyone that gets all 3 right (in any order) will enter a draw to win a 300 piece poker chipset.

So, who"s your choice for Gold, Silver and Bronze ?

Points are given to the top 20 players.  1 point for 20th and 20 points for 1st.  In the event of a tie, the club with the most points coring players will be ranked higher.  If this still doesn"t resolve it, then the club with the highest scoring individual will be ranked higher.

Out in 38th goes lubandige for Liverpool.

On a board of  jd ts kc    6c and with 1500 in the pot, Steve pushes his remaining 1740 in.

Thats enough for nyerunwxm to fold, but not for bigalhx3, who calls.

Out in 37th goes Scandicrusher for Cardiff.

In back to back hands, Dan lost AK v QQ, and then AJ v KK to send him packing.

The first was a 29k pot with xxAJDxx  allin on a flop of 92J and his exit hand saw his remaining 2k shipped to Calculator86.

Gone in 36th is KINDOG69.

Andy got his remaining 2k in preflop against mcvic.

7h 7c v  jh jc

The flop of  :3s: 4c js left Andy with minimal hope and  :3h: 8h ended it.

Another player exits for Liverpool.

Back to Back Bristol exits.  Out in 22nd goes club captain suzy666.

eastaway limps and suzy666 checks in the BB.

They see a flop of  6c qc 7s and check, a turn of  jc sees eastawat bet 2k, and suzy goes allin for 6.2k and gets called.

Title: Re: APAT National League - Grand Final Discussion

By my calculations,

Walsall have a minimum of 39 points

Edinburgh have a maximum of 39 points

With 3 players scoring points for Walsall, and only 2 for Edinburgh, then Walsall can"t be caught.

But, I"ve been wrong before.  Just once, but I was wrong.   ;D

No, in the League final it is with overall number of points scorers, where Bristol and Edinburgh once again tie with two each.  The final deciding factor becomes the highest finishing individual, which awards the Bronze medal to Bristol. Congratulations to them and unlucky for going so close to Edinburgh.

WD walsall again. A great team effort. Just shows the strength of the Central division here (leeds had a great run and were hampered a bit by the table draw)

great solo effort from Toby at the end to secure a medal too.

Thanks to Leigh, Neil and Ian for running the National League throughout the season and for all of the players for supporting our sponsor and playing the game in the right spirit throughout.

Congratulations to Walsall on winning the League in a great and exciting final and to Manchester and Bristol on their medal wins and to the other seven teams for making the final after a long season.

We look forward to doing it all again in 2010!

Well, what an end to a great season.  And after a quick scan of the competition earlier, my stash of poker chipsets is safe for the while (Unless anyone want to post and tell me differentely).

We hope eveyone has enjoyed the season, and look forward to doing it all again during season 4.  As always, these things only work with your support and efforts to play each week, so thank you for that.

I"m off for some kip, before a relaxing day by the pool, it"s a tough life, but when Des sends you on these fact-finding trips for season 4, who am I to argue.   ;)

Good night all.

Well done Walsall. It was a fun game to rail - Marty played power poker and bulldozed his way through.

Great work Toby and Bristol - Suznne did a good job getting the numbers for each game and it"s pleasing to see her get rewarded with a medal.

I was in Spain playing and once Martin began his Bingo Poker the game totally changed! He was killing them all (mainly rivers, lol). Well played Martin you had to go for broke to try to get 3rd (on your own!) and almost managed it. Thanks to all who played during the year. Walsall had a strong team and our capitano, Brian Yates missed out on the grand final. BCPC goes from strength to strength and I was one of the original 8ish who turned up that first night.
