Title: BLUFF - To show or not to show, that is the question
Post by: Philippos13 on November 07, 2007, 00:37:53 AM
Many things have been said about it this...Some would say never show a bluff as good players might find a tell when u are or not bluffing, another view is that you can show a bluff as advertising to get action on your good hands especially if you are a fairly tight player or even to get a player on tilt...

Yet i am not however sure what effect will have showing a bluff. This is because of perception. I might believe that i am showing a bluff for advertising however that is analysing the game through my eyes...The right approach i believe would be to think how my opponents would responde to me showing a bluff through their game.
The big problem though is, since i am facing as many as 9 opponents on the table how could i possible know how each one will respond and affect their game towards me? Can showing a bluff ever have a real and significant effect on the game that will actually give a player an edge or is it really just showing off?

Share your thoughts please. Thank you

Interesting thoughts. I think as you say, since there are 8/9 other players who will see this, you need to have a good knowledge of how each one will respond to that bluff and how much of the entire hand they will recall and possibly use against you later, you must also keep this in mind at all times during hands against those opponents.

I often think people simplify things like showing bluffs and just justify it to themselves as "advertising" or "creating a loose image" rather than remember how they played the hand also and using this to their advantage in the future too.

As a general rule I very rarely show anything when playing, bluffs or not. I think unless you are extremely in tune and know exactly how it will affect each of your opponents mentality against you that you are better just not giving away what is still at the end of the day free information.

I only show when I want them to remember the hand - bluff or not.  That way I can play in the same way later with a different holding (bluff when I showed a good hand earlier, or play a strong hand in the same way I bluffed earlier).

Otherwise, it"s just giving free information to the table.

The only time I tend to show a bluff is when my oppo folds and shows me the same cards that I"m holding - because I think it"s funny.  :D

I don"t show any cards 99% of the time. I"ll only show if I consider it to be in my best interests, for any future situation.

good points philip.
can see both arguments. i rarely show.
however, i like to show the odd one just for the showing off image.
then again if people fold to me and im holding big cards then i will still sometimes show.
so reading is still a problem, as if your willing to show some winning cards and a bluff - how will they know what your raising on next?!

I never bluff, so the situation has never been applicable for me.
