Title: Forum connection problems
Post by: lukybugur on November 12, 2007, 19:56:45 PM
I have had some problems connecting to the Forum at various times today. I assume the problem has been highlighted to you Des ... ?

If you want more info on WHEN it"s been down, it should be easy enough to track. Kinboshi didn"t post for almost 10 minutes from 14:41, for almost 14 minutes from 15:27 and I haven"t seen him on here for the past 19 minutes - these are obviously some of your "outage" times!

:)

I get it constantly when I am viewing the forum, I have to refresh the pages I am trying to read until it appears.

It may be the amount of traffic that is coming to the site which causes it to slow down some and time out? I dunno

Des?

I also consistently have a problem with slow to load forum pages... sometimes when no one else is logged on so probably not a traffic issue.

I just hope the home page refreshes quickly tomorrow night, cause I"m getting my@rse kicked in ths satellite!!  :"(

I asked Richard to throw some logs on the server but he must have forgotten!

Joking aside, we will have it looked into.

More problems again today though ...

Sorry to whine about it but the "timeout" messages and overall slow speed of the forum during these problem times are somewhat frustrating. Especially when typing, posting, getting the error message then having to re-type again.

According to www.calculatorcat.com/typing_test/ , (touch typing), I"m on 56 words a minute!

If I went any faster I"d be sitting in a cloud of smoke and broken finger nails  :)

The meessage I"m getting Des (if it"s any use to you and if you"ve not seen it yourself) is;

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\webs\apat.com\html\forum\Sources\Subs.php on line 321

Copy your post (Ctrl & C for those computer novices  ;) and then if it buggers up you can just paste it and re-post!

A valid point, if his posts were worth reading.  Mine aren"t either, but I make up for the lack of quality with quantity... ;D

Do you post a lot Daniel? I hadn"t noticed  ;)  I might start posting my threads a sentence at a time.

That way my number of posts will shoot right up  ;D  If Allan D posts one line at a time he"d be up at about a quarter of a million posts by now  :D

The difference between your posts Alan, and Daniels, is that yours are worth reading  ;D

By the way, will we not be seeing you in Manchester ?

Why thank you Ian! Though I think Daniel speaks a lot of sense (well when I say a lot, I"m sure he said something sensible on the 363rd post he made, still waiting for the next  ;)

Not sure if I"m free that weekend so didn"t try extra hard to get a seat.  Did try the clickfest last night but had problems with my card (remember we discussed the security code, well it kicked me out cause I couldn"t remember!)  Not the end of the world as may have saved myself £7.50,lol!  If my other plans fall through then may come down for reserve list and just catch up with friends in manchester if don"t get in.  You and Caz in?

Caz and myself are in - 100% record so far with 6 out of 6 attempts.

Caz will be disappointed that the "very nice young man"  :D, as she called you in Walsall, will not be in Manchester.

Lol, I"ve been called a few things in my time, this is definitely one of the nicer things  :D   I thought you were both very nice Ian, well until you took 4000 chips off me with your small blind KK  ;)

Tell Caz all is not lost as I may well still be in Manchester, first drink"s on me if I am!

That looks like a fun game :D

The only problem with online typing tests is that they tend to overstate your speed though.

It is very slow, to the point that its annoying going from post to post and trying to keep up with the threads..

This has not improved and seems to be getting worse!

The forum is becoming almost unusable now!

Maybe it"s time to consider changing the hosting company as throwing logs on the server doesn"t appear to be working.....

I agree.

I"ve never found EasySpace to be worth their salt as web hosts. As a web developer with over 50 clients on Host Europe hosting and email packages for over 8 years, I can recommend them and would be willing to assist in the transfer without charge. And, hoping that I"m not offending any other APATer, I would happily offer the service at cost price (significantly less than the £240 per year Host Europe would charge you if you went to them directly).

Interested?

I have to agree, there does seem to be a problem with being able to view the forum, I consistently have to copy what I have typed as it regularly times out and I lose everything.

Would be good to be able to view at more speed and reliability.

Today is definitely the worst I"ve experienced so far. I"m even having time to do work whilst moving between threads.......  :D

Me too - if by "work" you mean donking off chips in Cash Games.

The irony ... it"s taken me over two hours to get logged in to this "Forum Connection Problems" thread.

It"s not just the forum pages that are returning error messages - I"ve been timing out on the website from 10:30 this morning too which indicates a Hosting problem.

No Neil, I mean actual work, writing software - let me assure you, it"s a shock to the system !

At this rate I just might have to ask for a raise  :D

lol - I was going to post that it doesn"t seem worse but it definitely hasn"t got better.

However after 4 attempts at replying in this manner I thought I should change it :)

I believe that a move is in the works.  Obviously necessary, as it"s not usable in its current state.  I"m not a techie, but I don"t think the problem is necessarily the hosting company, but is rather a problem with the server setup in terms of the database.

Might be wrong though.
Title: Re: Forum connection problems
Post by: lukybugur on December 24, 2007, 17:55:33 PM
Some of the time I have had problems with the Forum pages only, which would indicate a problem with the Forum set up / forum corruption.

Mostly though, the PHP pages of the website also take some time to appear during these problem periods which leads me to believe that it"s the server that"s running slow and not just the database part of the website.

If anyone experiences problems with the forum again, please take a note of the following non-PHP address and paste it into your browser"s address bar. If the .doc file appears it"s likely to be a problem with the PHP and / or database. If it doesn"t appear, it"s a problem on the server itself;

http://www.apat.com/Press/Gareth%20Ower%20Wins%20European%20Amateur%20Championship.doc

If more of us can keep an eye on this and report back on here that"d be most helpful. Unless of course Des et al already know what"s going on ... ?

Title: Re: Forum connection problems
Post by: kinboshi on December 24, 2007, 19:32:34 PM
Most of the time it"s a connection error, or something to do with consecutive connections - which would suggest a database server issue.

Whatever it is, it definitely needs sorting.

Yes, this is driving me nuts at the moment.

There are a number of IT initiatives being looked at for 2008, and a move to our own dedicated server is scheduled as part of those developments.  Ideally, I would like everything launched at the same time, but we may have to move on the server sooner rather than later.   Thanks for the hosting offers Mark and Neil, I will pass them to Aidan for his consideration.

Apologies to everyone in the meantime while we seek a solution.

Des.
