Are alternates allowed to buy in on the day at the casino to replace players who are out in first 3 levels?

Correct, but it"s the first two levels.

Presumably those alternates will just buy in directly with no reference to an 888 account?

Quite possibly.

If you want a seat in advance, you are going to need an 888poker account.

If you take a chance on getting in as an alternate, then you will buyin direct at the venue.
