This has been mentioned on the thread regarding last night"s event but I think it warrants separate discussion.
Discussion seems to have been around "randoms" finding an APAT event and I think APAT needs to strike a balance between Community & Cliquey but for me it"s better that players have some awareness about what APAT is, the principles and the added value provided by sponsors rather than just stumbling across a tourney on a random Saturday night.
For me, last year"s system of one password for all events worked well. It was freely available on the forum and therefore accessible to all.
I appreciate that we would struggle to function without sponsors" input and restricting numbers may seem wrong to them.
I can only assume that we will need passwords for the league games otherwise that could get messy
I also think the are important for satellites so people know what they are playing for.
-
Understand and appreciate (and agree with) the concept of a password for APAT Championship events, but despite the fact that it is freely available on the APAT forum, I"m not sure that 888 would be quite so accommodating - for every player that tries to register but is put off by the password challenge, 888 lose $5 in rake. I know the password is openly available, but there will be players that will not bother to hunt out the password and will just go find another tourney (potentially on another site) when they get challenged to enter a password.
-
More the merrier imo.
-
888 lose $5 in rake.
I noticed the $5 rake and had me thinking, do we normally get charged rake for these games?

Not before, but as from this year with 888 yes.

Yes its mentioned and discussed on various threads including the long S5 discussion thread
The live events remain rake free, but the economics of the current environment online are such that rake has to be charged online
It"s a small price compared to the added value on offer in S5 of course

I understand what you say, but, the added value of last year is halved, and we have to pay more for it. Sounds like a much lesser deal than previous years.
-
pretty sure last season was the only time online events were rake free.
As for the password thing, BSQ sponsored events were password free and after the odd incident things settled down well there

Still better value than everywhere else though?
I think considering all of the circumstances this year it is a small price to pay

but there is still added value, even if less than last year..... and paying rake is just so standard in poker I don"t see a problem with it. We are still massively +EV compared to other normal MTTs. It"s all good.
-
I understand the need for a rake and I acknowledge that 888 will not want to restrict numbers in my OP.
Where"s the line though - surely we are going to have a password for the league?
What about the sats?

Is that still the case when there are over $1000 in rake and only $500 in added value?

$500 ROI, to go towards the cost of investing in APAT, including infrastructure etc.

Live events to pay for. Casino hire, and reg free for players
Live streaming to pay for
Freelance staff to pay for at way below minimum wage compared to hours worked
etc etc
The deal for S4 was exceptional, doubt we"ll see that repeated ever again
Industry conditions are harsher.
Without 888 none of the above would exist for 2011
As it happens not only do players have to pay some rake this year but cutbacks have been made in costs in all those areas too.
APAT remains an outstanding community, with an outstanding offer, run by outstanding people, and me
Long may it last.

League game is password protected.
Obviously I will only tell the West Midlands team what the password is, I wouldn"t want anyone else trying to win it. ;)

If you played a conventional MTT with a $50+$5 buy in, you would not get the added value seat.... so the $500 is +EV and is a benefit for APAT. Surely all good?

In that case, you may want to change the APAT "About" page as it now only refers to live tournaments being regsitration free.
I do understand what you are saying about the rake funding live tournaments and expenses etc. I would also say that 888 have a great deal sponsoring APAT, maybe even so good, that at the end of season it might even cost them zero..
-
i dont think there is any need for a password and the more that play the better for APAT,888 & the players taking part. And im sure there are many players playing APAT that just stumbled upon APAT online and just started playing by a chance finding

Would you not say that as a business if I was to work in partnership/sponsoring a team/other company that the best outcome for both is that its costs both companies Zero.. If APAT get all the added value and it costs 888 nothing, then happy days they will look to continue supporting APAT for years to come..

The Apat / 888.com deal is Sponsorship not Charity, it is a two way relationship but ultimately it is a marketing strategy.
This is a process through which companies strive to build strong customer relationships and create value for their customers and very importantly, for themselves.

This.
Of course, we could have free added value rained down on us by a sponsor in a deal that is just too good to sustain from a business perspective...... oh wait, sounds like last year.
If it costs 888 nothing to provide added value, then we have the makings of a long and fruitful partnership.

never ever bite the hand that feeds you
I am not sure how to answer that, except to say... I feed myself.. If APAT were feeding me, your comment would be relevant.. (Unless you mean something completely different)

ths is just another way of saying the APAT orgainizers do there best for US not them selves and all the bickering should not happen jmo .

I wish people would stop with saying that people are bickering or arguing, its actually winding me up more than the discussion itself..

Carl made a point, myself and others made other points which were different . Its an open forum that"s what happens on forums.. Carl is not in a bad mood, he"s not having a go, he is making a point.

No problem Carl, I just wish people would not see a discussion as an argument or bickering.. Its seems that people have lost the will to discuss things, or class those with a different view as wrong. I answered in disagreement with what you said, but it does not mean we are arguing or bickering..
Its like a school playground sometimes when people have their own views on things..

Can I ask that there is a list published prior to the first league match which shows who is playing for which team and what their 888 alias is, as well as their APAT alias, so we know who everyone is?

It will be like 10 people in each team and then 500 people in team West Midlands - we stand no chance at all.

There is not a great deal of difference between the volume of players "signed" for West Mids as there is "signed" for Solent.... and I"d be surprised if there was any significant difference between the number who start the first tourney for each team.....

I"m sure warren will have more players turning out for Luton than anyone else. His rallying calls last year were amazing!! ;)

There is a HUGE difference..!! If you have 100 people signed up for your team, and manage to drum up half of those to play each week... Then the teams who have 30 signed up who also manage to drum up half are at a massive disadvantage. Flooding a team game with massive numbers is always going to put numbers of people in the points scoring positions.. May I say, Like last season... And now, you have been made bigger with the addition of the Birmingham team, who my have had a low turnout last season, might actually get more players now that they are in a larger team with more chance of winning.
Its all about numbers, more in the squad gives you more chance of high turnout, gives you more chance of winning the highest points each week. I am honestly surprised that the joining of 2 teams together was allowed.. Different story if it was 2 of the very small teams to make one team similar in size to the other teams.

Carl you missed my point. I do agree that teams with bigger lists of players will likely have more players per tournament, and therefore a greater chance of success..... and for that reason, I hope Leigh's new approach to scoring will help to redress or balance.
BUT, the comment I made that you quoted, was that there is not great deal of difference between the volume of players "signed" for West Mids as there is "signed" for Solent. I wasn"t comparing to any other teams - was merely responding to John Murray"s earlier remark.

there are several other threads on which this is being discussed - one of them was a message from John congratulating West Mids in advance on their S5 victory..... plus several others commenting on the disparity in general. Apologies if I"ve commented on the wrong thread.

Back to the original post and questions raised.
The Online National League will be password protected, as players need to sign up to a club prior to playing. Otherwise, it becomes an absolute admin nightmare.
As for all other APAT tourneys on 888poker, there are no plans to stick passwords on them. Everyone is welcome to play the APAT events whether they are actively involved on the APAT website or not.
It would be great for every player to get more involved in the community side of things, but we understand that this is not for everyone, and wouldn"t wish to alienate any of our members.
And to be fair, last season, the password became quite well known. ;D

I dont see any reason not to allow randoms to play in the APAT online games (Except the team games of course), but, I think it would be to the benefit of APAT, financially and for future sponsorship talks, to get the new players forum-registered as it would eventually benefit APAT as a business to have a larger collection of forum members. Even if some of the new members are just in and out for one game, SOME are gonna stay around..

i agree that it is not neccessary to have passwords for the big games however i think the value added seats etc ( that are being paid for by us through the rake etc) should go to to the highest finishing APAT member - something like a last longer competition. when registering for the tournament it does say see the APAT website for details. so if there is a condition that one must be a member of APAT before the start of the tournament in order to win any value added prizes and membership is free i feel it could cover any probs of a non member just randomly late reging to try win the added seat

JayTee has a good point. Maybe APAT should make it a necessity to register for APAT or dont win the added value..

It is a good idea, however, everyone that has an 888poker account, effectively is a member of APAT.
APAT membership is free.

interesting that you should mention that. if this is the case i feel 888 should send an email to all their members stating that they have taken APAT on board this year with an intro about APAT as well as the appropriate links. can also mention added value, ideals etc. also mention membership is free and encouraged just go to this link www.apat.com failure to reg before starting time of tournement.............UNLUCKY

Why would West Midlands suddenly have 500 players? We had less than some other teams last season and as i"ve pointed out roughly 47012 times our core team consists of around 10-15 main players. We won as 7 of those players were in the top 20 individual points.
Last game of the season we had 8 out of the 56 who played. Solent had 15. 33 played for other teams. Walsall won. Go figure.
So so bored of the old Walsall won because of their numbers argument. Love to see anyone who can actually back it up.

Yet, those people have no idea who APAT is or even any clue that they are a member, so, if they were requested to singup to APAT forum as a final part of their membership?

I don"t disagree with that thought, and I think we"ve had this discussion before. We have plenty of long standing members that have never signed up to the forum, let alone posted on it. They have played many, many APAT tournaments, both live and online.
You don"t have to sign up to the forum, to be a member. Perhaps Des wants to look at this.

I don"t have a horse in this race but....on one hand we say that you are a member if you belong to 888 (and PS, BSq, Betfair) in previous years (although when does that stop?)...but, on the main website it says "Join up for a free membership today by clicking the banner at the top of the page."...which takes you to this forum.
This would imply that you AREN"T a member unless you are ALSO a forum member.
Otherwise, how does one keep track of who is a member and who is not?
Like I said, I have no stake but it is confusing.

I wasn"t objecting to the number of players they have - I was objecting to the strength of their team. In my opinion, West Midlands have too many exceptionally strong players and that sort of thing shouldn"t be encouraged.

Maybe we need to introduce a handicap system John ::)

We already did - I signed for the WM team.... should bring their standard down a bit.

i believe it would go against the APAT spirit to stop any new member winning the added value seat that there poker skills had just won

Well said Tighty. No other tourneys that i know of offer such a great structure for so little. The closest are the DTD Super 50, 100 and 150s but they are only 30 minute blinds and that makes a big difference.
Playing the APATs for the last couple of years (along with joining the BCPC) has allowed me to improve my game no end and to play in the bigger comps knowing how to play in a 2 day event. The first year i played i didn"t have a clue but last year i managed to finish 4th in the overall live rankings and topped the Online league individual rankings alongside James Edwards who incidentally knocked me out of my first ever APAT!
They"re a fantastic set of events allowing players without a huge bankroll to play in proper deepstack tournaments alongside some very good players and some great people too. No other tournaments i play in have such a great sense of community. Long may they continue, keep up the good work!
