Title: A Year (and a couple of weeks) In Poker!
Post by: Bigfella42 on December 12, 2011, 19:47:37 PM
OK, here goes. My plan was to start an occassional blog in the New Year, as I"m looking forward to 2012 and giving the poker circuit a bit of a go. I"m enjoying the game at the moment, so let"s start recording a few adventures on here. Decided to start it a couple of weeks early. as I played the Sky Poker Tour thanks to ChezGer at the weekend so will do a trip report as my first meaningful entry.

So what are the hopes for 2012? I"m not setting any financial objectives but hope to play well and run good as often as possible. January the plan is to play the DTD deepstack which has a 30k starting stack and of course the APAT event at Brighton. From there I"ll plan on a month by month basis. I expect I"ll go weeks at times without playing live, but hope trips will be frequent enough to keep this going.

Vegas is of course a must and this year I"m planning a trip around the wsop main event once the dates are confirmed. I"m not expecting to play the main of course, although I"ll try the odd satellite. But I am looking forward to hopefully rail at least one of my nephews - Danny turns 21 in May so will be eligible to play the 2012 event. Both Joe and Danny are trying to make a go of it full time so I hope to make the occassional post about their progress on here too.

The intention is to end this at the close of 2012, hopefully that will give me enough of an end point to keep it going.

So, onto the Sky Tour event......

Sky Poker Tour December 2011
=======================

I managed to bink the Chezger league so last Friday headed up to Newcastle on the train. Day off work so a nice early afternoon journey up. Royal Station hotel was fine and headed up to Aspers about 6.30.

I don"t tend to drink lager much but just fancied it for a change so got a Fosters and saw Tighty for a quick chat. He told me Scouse had bottled out of playing so apart from Tighty I knew a grand total of zero people there. More Fosters flowed before the 8pm warm up event. Nothing eventful happened, I went out early when my  8s 8h were no match to an overpair. So a relatively early night, fell asleep watching The Outlaw Josie Wales.

Saturday arrived so up to the casino for the main event. It was a one day event with just 5k starting stack so I decided to go for chips early (very different to my apat strategy of course where I always have the nuts).

Interesting hand in level 1. Raised to 150 in mid position, I have  7h 8h n the cut off and flat. Both blinds call. With 600 now in the middle thats worth winning when you only start with 5k. Flop is  Qc 7c 3d I think. Defimitely 2 clubs on the board includng the Q. Original raiser bets 300, I flat others fold. Turn is a rag, makes no difference to board - bet is now 600 and I call again. Dont really like my call on reflection as I"m bleeding chips potentially, but I"m still beating AK and can get stubborn sometimes. River is  5c and the aggressor now bets 900. I look at the board and feel certain they have the Queen. The flush has hit and theres loads of chips in the pot. I feel I have played the hand the way you would have played a flush draw, so I push all in. They sigh fold and show a queen. Phew! Not sure my play would score high on an analysis thread, but it worked!

From there I went on a roll, winning two three way all ins. After a few hours I found myself with over 100k and the chip lead. The structure was fierce and the Fosters flowing. When the bubble burst I was still top 3 I guess. Unfortunately I hit a couple of spots where I raised pre with hands like  Ks Qh and  Js Qc and then had someone shove for just a few more bb"s so I sort of had to call. I lost both races and suddenly was short. A suited Ace in the bb was enough for me to shove over a raise for my last 10 bigs so I exited in 13th. All in all though I was pleased enough with my effort. It was a good day out and I ended the evening with a couple of pints, and headed back to the hotel where I watched an old Morecambe and Wise Christmas special. It was the one where Eric played Steve Davis at Snooker and where they did a song with Alvin Stardust dressed in their best Teddy Boy gear. They really dont make them like that any more.

So a couple of hundred quid and yet another failed attempt at making a final table sigh. But I"d have taken that before I set off so can"t be too bad.  Thanks to ChezGer and sky for the seat.

Roll on 2012..........

It worked for you in Vegas didn"t it?? I was just copying one of my poker heroes  ;D

While on the subject of Vegas, it did strike me when the APAT tourney was down to the last couple of tables that the quality of APAT player is now probably as good as it has ever been. It"s great to see a great bunch of people developing their games together and the way the APAT community support each other and offer encouragement is excellent. Pretty sure we"ll see some breakthrough performances in 2012. Vegas was fantastic and I hope we can all repeat it again at some point in the future.

I have a work Christmas lunch tomorrow so I won"t be venturing up to DTD for the Monte Carlo weekend. I like attending these events whenever I can even if it"s just to play some side events, as there is always a great atmosphere and of course a great gathering of the poker community. But I"ll be keeping a special eye on the updates on Saturday as both Danny and Joe are playing.

I have really enjoyed following their progress and remember our home games when Danny was 13 and Joe a couple of years older. Danny in particular took a real interest in the game from an early age, playing freerolls on one table while having the big stakes full tilt tables on the other side of the screen. He would play back hands constantly to see what Ivey and co were raising and bluffing with. At that age you soak up all the information and Danny became a formidable mtt player online very quickly.

For his 18th birthday I took Danny to DTD for the weekend, and his dad (my brother) Rick came along as well as Joe. It was a sign of things to come as he proceeded to take down his very first tourney, a £75 buy in for £1,800 I think. Duke and Ger junior joined the birthday weekend so a good time was guaranteed.

Some of you my remember Danny came 4th in the last Monte Carlo cashing for £19k. He had already won a UKIPT side event a month earlier for £12k, ad has continued to cash regularly since including making the last two tables of the GUKPT Grand Final a couple of weeks ago for a £5k cash.

Joe has had a good year too, with victory in last months Fox Poker Club monthly £300 for a cash in excess of £10k. His game has really come on in the last couple of years and of course they constantly discuss and review hands together and also have a great group of friends who all approach the game in a similar way.

So fingers crossed for some run good this weekend, and may this continue into next year. I know it"s just a card game but when they are running deep in a big event I"m always very proud! Of course, they"ll never be as good as me and I"ll remind them of that at every opportunity  ;D ;D ;D

See you in Brighton Ian, should be a great weekend.

Just checked my bets today. Goals galore coupon no good. I like the bet (both teams to score) and had a good year on it last season. Have struggled this year though. Got a nice surprise checking my Scoop 6 ticket - did the bet on a whim today and managed to get the place bet up for just over £200. Christmas shopping tomorrow so that was well timed!

Looking forward to the Froch fight tonight. Apparently Joe has a friend who is the double of Carl Froch, and for months they got VIP treatment in a club in London as a result! Hope the real one wins tonight, going to have a few quid on him on SkyBet.

Froch never really got going, and Jim Watt was really tilting me with his commentary. Dropped a few quid on the fight but not a lot.

On a brighter note Danny made good progress on day 1 of the Monte Carlo. ending the day with 133,000. A long way to go but he"s put himself in with a chance. Joe busted last level of the day.

Christmas shoppping today, then lunchtime drink following Tighty"s updates.

No joy for Danny yesterday as he ran QQ into KK early on.

Christmas shopping pretty much complete. Still need to get a couple of bottles of Oyster Bay for Christmas day - love the New Zealand Sauvignons. A conversation turned to Toblerones too yesterday and have a fancy for some of them as a result - well, it is Christmas! Got an interesting couple of days ahead work wise. Travelling to Glasgow in the morning and gotta be in Sheffield tomorrow night! Still, variety is the spice of life so they say.

The current plan for Friday night looks good. Apparently Joe and Danny are coming down to see me and we"re gonna have a couple of pints and a Chinese meal. Their plans have been known to change mind you, but it will be a perfect start to the Christmas weekend if they do make an appearance.

My next poker trip will be the DTD January deepstack - it"s two weeks Friday so will soon come around. The plan is to travel up Friday and play on the Saturday. APAT weekends have got me into this habit so it seems.  ;D ;D

Shame you"re not in Glasgow a bit longer Glenn, would"ve been happy to invite you up for dinner and a couple of beers. Sounds like there"s more business than pleasure in your day and a fair amount of rushing around. Will def catch up in Brighton mate.

Happy New Year one and all. I"ve been down with the man flu and needed lots of sympathy and hot lemon drinks, but have emerged out of it now so attention turns to poker in 2012.

I should set goals so will have a go but as long as I dont lose chunks I"ll be happy. I enjoy poker, like many APATers, as an enjoyable hobby and enjoy the social side. But having said that I"m competitive and like to win (even if it doesn"t happen much!) and am always looking to develop my game to be the best that I can.

So what would I like to achieve on the felt? I would like to add at least 5 flags to my Hendon Mob stats this year. The most I"ve added in any year is four, so that would be progress. Ambitiously I"d like to cash in a World Series event (wont be playing many so this will be tough, so would also take a deep run in a Venetian Deepstack or Caesars megastack series event) and I"d also like to win more than $3,600 in a single event as that is my largest cash on my stats so far. I"ll probably epic fail on all three, but targets should be tough and we"ll give it a go.

My first live event of the year is the deepstack at DTD this weekend. Hoping to get there for the Friday night Guinness satellite but that depends on work. It"s a great comp this month with a 30k starting stack so it"s worth travelling to. That will be followed two weeks later by APAT Brighton, so I should have plenty of reason to update this thread in the next few weeks.

Also I"m keeping my eyes open for the confirmation of the WSOP dates - they should be out in January and I always book the time off work straight away and get everything booked. Already looking at hotel prices and trying to decide if I should stay at Harrahs again as it was such good value in November or pay more to stay at the Venetian as I love that hotel. Harrahs is the sensible choice but I will be going for 2 weeks so could split the trip between the two. Decisions decisions.........

Will keep you posted  :)

Good Luck with the Goals Glen.

I have a goal to get to Vegas again this year but I need to fund it from my bankroll.

Venetian is the nutz.

Good luck with the targets Glen. I would not make them too tough though as targets should be achievable, although it depends on if they are set for fun or if they are something you are really going to put in a lot of effort to achieve.
Five flags sounds like a lot, how many live events will you be playing about and what WSOP events are you going to be in. Will you be playing the deepstack each month? I like to have people to support on the update threads :-)
Title: Re: A Year (and a couple of weeks) In Poker!
Post by: Bigfella42 on January 04, 2012, 19:21:41 PM
Steve the targets are not ones that I"ll lose any sleep over, I guess I"m trying to anticipate what I would view as a good year at the end of 2012.

5 flags sounds a lot, but I managed 4 last year (including a Spanish and an American flag) and at the moment I"m expecting to play more this year. It"s difficult to predict my monthly volume of (ranking) live tournies, but it will probably be one only in most months, with a mad "let"s go for it" two weeks in Vegas in the summer and hopefully a few days at the APAT worlds. I doubt I"ll play the DTD deepstack every month - I"m keen to try the Fox Poker Club monthly £300 which normally happens the same time as DTD"s. It gets fewer runners but still has a five figure top prize and is a lot closer to me for travelling. Other trips will emerge - I"d love to attend the Irish Open at Easter but I can"t do them all and the main event would be beyond my bankroll. I also like UKIPT"s although the higher buy in means that emerging tours like Gentings will be worth a look.  I dont tend to plan too far in advance for weekend tournies, so my plans may well change.

As for the WSOP aim, it"s something I"d like to achieve as I"ve been to the Series for the last 5 years and played one or two events each time and so far have zero cashes, so I"d like to break that duck. I"ve twice played the $1,500 shootout, 10 players per table and winner progresses to next round and is guaranteed a cash. Each time I"ve finished 2nd  :"( :"( - the first time to Vince Van Patten, the WPT commentator ffs! Last summer my over pair was crushed by a flopped straight and with the blinds getting high I couldn"t get away from it. This year I expect I"ll play 2 or 3 events, but I"m changing my routine this year and planning a trip around main event time. Will try a few satellites for it but will probably be confined to railing the big one. So the cashing at the WSOP target is more in hope than expectation. The schedule will be out soon so I"ll start studying it straight away!

Finally, if I don"t manage a WSOP cash this year, there will still be hope. In 2013 I"ll be eligible for a new event - the Veterans!

Just busted the satellite in frustrating style. Was going along fine had 26k at 400/800/100 which was over average
only 15 more to bust for a seat. Raised with king queen to 2200 and big bling called. Flop was queen rag rag he led for 4500 i raised to 12k. He flats and checks the 6 on the turn. With so much invested i shove. He called with jack queen and the river was a jack of course. He had 500 chips more than me. Its my blog so bad beat stories are allowed.
Roll on tomorrow. Im on the fosters now having phoned my nephews to force them to listen to my story! they were duly sympathetic although i expect they weren"t really listening!! still i feel so much better now and sympathetic posts are welcome.
Still loving poker though, and im determined to run good tomorrow.......

TRIP REPORT DTD JANUARY DEEPSTACK
---------------------------------------

Played day 1b on Saturday. Thr buy in has increased to £500 so I will need to be selective about how many of these I play and will try satellites for March (February is not in my plans as I have a week in Ireland late Jan/early Feb). They have however increased the starting stack to 30,000 with a 40 minute clock and this comp is exceptional in terms of the amount of play that it offers.

My starting table was OK. One "internet kid" sat directly to my right and he was probably the best player at the table. I played a steady few levels and eventually found two situations that should have seen my stack move upwards, but I wasn"t running good. First example was that after a raise and a flat call, I made a loose call on the button with  9s  10d. The flop came  7h 8h Js which gave me the nuts. The original raiser only had about 7k left and went all in. Easy call for me and he showed  Kh Ks. He walked off but had to come back as the turn and river were hearts for an unlikely flush. 15 minutes later it"s me holding the kings and after a raising war the opponent shows queens and has about 15k (his whole stack) invested. It was all in pre and board runs out  5s 6h 7h 8d 9c for a straight and a split pot! Despite this I was slowly building my stack and after 10 hours play had over 100k when the average was 66k. All going very nicely. Meanwhle Alan Armitage arrives at the table with warnings to all that his blinds are not for sale. He almost immediately gets involved in a couple of pots with the internet kid and it"s not long before they clash in a huge pot where all the money goes in on the turn. Alan is drawing with 16 outs and hits one of them to send the youngster on his way.
We took a break and there was one level left on day 1. I had 110k and I think the blinds were 1500/3000/300 - something like that anyway. Unfortunately I chose this level to lose all discipline and somehow managed to donk the whole stack off, something I need to work on as I tend to do this too often! My biggest mistake was 3 betting a loose player when I had positiion on him and  Ks Qd in my hand, only to get reraised by a rock. For some reason I got stubborn and put him all in - a reasonable move if the blinds were 5k 10k but not at this point - I can"t really explain my thinking other than I failed to adjust to such a long structure. His AK held. That put me down to a bowl whish didn"t last much longer.
Despite the one level where I played poorly I was happy with my early play and the fact that I built my stack well in a tough field gives me hope for the future. I hope I can learn from my mistakes and believe I will.
Finished the night with a few beers with Alan who had made day 2 in a good position. I was hoping he would win as I know he wouldn"t waste the money if he won  ;D ;D
We shared a cab back to the Holiday Inn where some considerate poker players had ordered too much pizza so we had a slice. Alan was looking for a final beer but I"d had enough by then - probably annoyed with myself a bit for my last level of play. Still, upwards and onwards and not long to Brighton. Looking forward to my first APAT event of 2012.
Great comp at DTD, there"s nowhere to hide with such a structure and congrats to all who cashed.

Sam you are probably spot on I did mumble something as I walked passed Tighty"s desk about feeling knackered but even so I still feel I should have made an easy lay down.

Just a quick update - played the Brighton event last weekend which was another enjoyable weekend. Friday night drink with good company telling everyone about Stu"s exploits in Vegas  ;D ;D. Started off well in the tourney but ran bad at the wrong time and crashed out after the dinner break. Then settled into a few beers in the casino before calling it a night. Didn"t play the cash game Sunday as I decided to head back to a family Sunday lunch gathering after a few telephone calls persuaded me this was the right choice! Great to see all the usual suspects and missed those who were not able to make it to the APAT event.

Likely to be offline for a week or so from Saturday. Every year two events are etched in stone in my diary. Vegas in the summer and the Clonmel Greyhound festival in late January. I fly out Saturday for a week of Irish hospitality at its best with plenty of gambling, guinness and seeing old friends. I"ve not missed this festival for 18 years and I must admit that even though there are poker tournaments every night, I never play as there"s too much going on to even think about it. Plus my friends who attend the festival aren"t into poker so it would be a bit anti social to spend too long at the tables.

My local card club, the Full House in Reigate, has a small festival on at the beginning of February so I"ll probably get stuck into a couple of those events on my return.

Upwards and onwards.....

Wow it"s been a while since I posted on here. So quick update on the last few weeks.

Not played any live poker at all since end of January. Had a great week in Ireland, one of the best festivals I"ve been to in all the years that I"ve been going. After a quiet 2011 on the dog front, this year has started really well. While I was   in Ireland two of my young dogs won and they"re both up to A1 grade already (that"s the highest grade other than open racing). So hopefully a good year beckons.

Came back and had a bad cold.  Managed to get to work every day but didn"t fancy going out at night so missed all of the Reigate festival, but never mind. To cheer myself up I booked my summer flights to Vegas  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) - going out on the 29th June and back on 13 July so will be there at the end of the wsop festival which will be a new experience for me. Not booked accommmodation yet - am thinking of having the first 4 nights at the Golden Nugget downtown as there"s a tourney in their festival I fancy playing. It"s a $1.000 buy in but 20k starting stack and an hour clock, so looks like plenty of play guaranteed. Will almost certainly move onto Harrahs after that for the last 10 nights - nicely located for the Venetian and Caesars festivals and a free shuttle to the Rio.

I"ve realised that I miss the Chezger summer deepstack festival in Chester as it clashes with my trip. Probably for the best as this festival attracts some of the UK"s best!

Back to Ireland this Friday for another greyhound weekend. There"s a festival in Adare and I"m staying in a pub for 35 euro a night and it"s going to be great!! After that need to get back into the poker and my plan is to play the monthly £300 at the Fox in London at the beginning of March. Haven"t been there  yet so will be a new experience.

Also noted the GUKPT in April is in Stockton, 50k starting stack and buy in reduced to £500. Quite tempted and will make a decision mid March.

Was first out of the Chezger league tonight......... it can only get better  ;D

Hi all.

Main reason for lack of updates has been that nothing of any interest has been going on in my life since the last entry! Am however playing my first live poker since January this weekend.... heading up to DTD and should get there in time to play the 150 bounty event tomorrow night and will also play the £330 on Saturday. Looking forward to getting back to playing and am expecting to increase volume over the next few months. Joe and Danny are up there playing the 770 event so I"ll watch their progress while I"m there.

Coventry booked, entry paid and hotel (Ricoh) sorted. Arriving Friday of course :D Might have to bring the Coventry duck as my card protector  ;D Looking forward to meeting up with the usual suspects...

Vegas hotels booked for late June/early July - settled on 4 nights at the Golden Nugget  and 10 at Harrahs. just need to bink a few quid now to buld the bankroll.

Will post a trip reort from DTD..... can I stay focused, stay sober and not donk hundreds of bb"s off with KQ? Time will tell....

Right, time to kick start the blog again. The APAT site was down for a while, then my laptop blew up, and I"ve also spent a bit of time in Ireland. Not played much poker - I bubbled the APAT Coventry event when I ran AQ into Paul Mc"G"s AA, and also played the Black Belt event in Stratford and played really badly to exit early.

Been a good start to the year with the Greyhounds in Ireland. Bought a couple of baby pups last year and they have both started running and are both open class already. Had 6 wins already this year and we"re currently top of the private trainers table at Limerick. You can go years in the dog game without much success - it"s similar to poker in that regard, so when the good times come you need to enjoy them. Fingers crossed for more success.

Back to the poker and I"m really looking forward to getting back out there. Have to miss Cardiff this weekend, but I"m going to DTD for their WSOP warm up weekend on 1 June. My Vegas trip is now only 5 weeks away, and I"m further enthused by the fact that the Golden Nugget has a 24 hour International Beer Bar which sounds a good place to chill after busting out of the tournies! I"m spending my first 4 nights downtown this year which will be a change.

Had a great weekend - it was Dannys 21st birthday celebration and we had a family Chinese meal and some great banter. Joe and Danny are heading out to Vegas for 4 weeks and staying at Palms, so they"ll be there when I arrive which is great. They fly out 4 weeks Friday so I"ll be following their wsop progress and will update on here.

Sorry to be missing this weekend but will follow the updates and good luck to all taking place. Also well done to all the International team captains I did play for England last year and the best advice I can offer is don"t do what I did and call when a team mate has gone all in. Sorry Don  ;D ;D

Sorry to have missed Cardiff at the weekend. Once the updates start and the facebook activity tells me that everyone seems to be in Cardiff except me, I started to regret not going. Sounds like a great weekend again and well done to all who cashed.

It"s nearly time for me to dust off the hoodie as I"m venturing up to DTD on Friday. Will play Day 1B of the wsop warm up event which is Saturday, so will probably play the £40 on Friday while enjoying a beer or two. With 30,000 chips and an hour clock, I must adjust to this main event structure and am really going to try to maintain focus throughout, but time will tell!

Might be easier to rent a flat in Nottingham as I"m also at DTD the following weekend for the Blonde Bash. Expect to see a number of APAT regulars there for what will be a great weekend I"m sure.

Just over 4 weeks to Vegas and I must admit I"m like a kid waiting for Christmas. It promises to be an epic (that"s the right word isn"t it?) trip and I"ll be using this blog to record the highs and lows. I"ve noticed that the Wynn have a festival on this year during the wsop, and I might play one or two of their events as I like the room. Having said that, every year before I go I spend ages planning a schedule of events to play and then completely disregard it when I"m there as it"s not really a place to work to a set plan.  ;D

Upwards and onwards, next stop DTD.

Can you post a little about the dogs records Glenn and how the scene works?  What"s the prize money like, entry fees, etc - would be great to get some insight into whether people can make money at that game.

Don"t know if anyone saw it, but I followed the first season of "Luck" on Sky a couple of months back, with Dustin Hoffman and set around a racecourse in LA.  Gave a great background to the gee gees.

I confess I saw the first one but then there was a long wait until they started showing them. Then there was all that kerfuffle about horses dying during the filming and I never got to watch it. Then they cancelled it.

Might try and find the back episodes one weekend though.

Definitely needed to get through the first two episodes to get an appreciation of the characters, but for me it was an essential weekly watch.  Shame it was cancelled, but a fair call in the interests of the...erm...cast.

Right, will make start re the greyhounds. My Dad was a bookmaker and when I was a kid he owned 3 bookie shops in South London. So on Saturdays I was always taken to one of the shops as my mum worked on the till and I spent the day out the back with my Dad while he settled the bets. In those days the commentaries were over the tannoy and results confirmed on a ticker tape. My "job" was to shout out the SP"s from the tape as they came through and the old man wrote them down. Sunday mornings often involved a trip to Phil Rees" greyhound kennel in Surrey, as my Dad owned a couple of dogs and we used to take them for a walk and give them a few treats. So it"s probably fair to say I was brought up in a bit of a gambling environment, but I loved it and believe I was a fantastic tipster when I was 12 years old. I knew everything about horses and my Dad would often refer to me when he wanted to know about a particular horse and if the distance and going would suit. Unfortunately I no longer have that level of info!!

I bought my first flat in my early 20"s and it was a 5 minute drive from Wimbledon dog stadium. In those days they ran 4 nights a week and I rarely missed a meeting. The dogs took over from the horses and it wasn"t long before I knew every dog that ran there. My knowlegde grew and I hit a bit of a golden streak. Remember we are going back about 25 years and I remember going in 8 nights on the trot and winning each time, and my total profit was nearly £2k which was like 3 months wages. I knew some of the kennel staff and had a good supply of information coming through.

So this money was burning a hole in my pocket so I decided to do something sensible with it. I picked up the Sporting Life, went to the classified section, and found a greyhound for sale. The following night I went to Wembley stadium, watched a dog run, handed over £750 and suddenly she was mine. Her kennel name was Titch as she weighed 22 kilos which is tiny for a dog, but she was fast out of traps and was only 15 months old. I transferred her to a trainer at Wimbledon and had a good few years fun with her. She was no world beater but had a huge heart and once her racing days were over she went to my parents and lived on the settee and in front the fire for the rest of her life.

So Titch had been good but I now wanted more. I watched the Derby dogs running and even though they were out of my budget I knew I wanted one eventually. So I decided the best chance was to buy some young pups, have them reared and hope they turn out to be Derby class. I bought two pups from Ireland at 5 months old. Had them reared for a year and then started to school them. Turns out they were useless. I sold them for small money to a trainer at Portsmouth - the class of dog there was a few notches below Wimbledon so they were happy enough and won a few times for their new owners. But I can be a stubborn old git and the desire was still there. So I tried again. but this time I bought a young dog from the sales in Limerick. Her name was River Gift and I gave her the pet name of Misty. She had reached the final of a 72 dog competition in Ireland and was still very young. She came over to England and she went to a trainer at Catford. After a few runs the penny dropped with her,  and she just kept winning and getting faster. She had no early pace and always came from the back, she was so exciting to watch. She suffered though with injuries but in her short career she made me realise what a buzz I got from owning a good dog. But I wanted more!!!

Misty came home and I bred her to a dog based in Ireland. That was fun - I put her in a dog crate, flew her over to Ireland, the stud keeper met us at Dublin, we travelled down to his farm where the mating took place and we were on the 3.30 plane back to Gatwick. She was back home eating her grub by 6 o"clock. The litter resulted in 10 pups. I kept 3 who turned out to be OK, but three of the ones I sold turned out to be excellent. Her next litter produced a dog who broke the track record at Brough Park and her pups were now worth a few quid. While breeding was fun I wanted to get back into serious ownership so it was time to get serious. I wanted more!!!!

Those of you who follow the dogs have probably heard of dogs running under the "Droopys" prefix. These dogs are all bred in a large establishment in Waterford and they are well know as probably the best breeders in Ireland. A good friend of mine was also into the dogs and one day he told me he had just bought 3 pups from the Droopys kennel and would I like a share. They weren"t cheap but they were not silly money, so I bought in and the dogs all came over to England. One of these was a dog called Droopys Brooklyn, he was fast and went straight into top company, winning an open race at Romford in only his second race. We knew we had a good one and a couple of months later he got to the final of the Gymcrack at Hall Green. I think he finished 2nd in that. The biggest puppy competition was the Irish Puppy Derby at Harolds Cross ib Dublin, and this carried a first prize of 50,000 euro. We decided the dog was good enough to take his chance so we sent him to a trainer in Ireland. There were about 100 dogs entered so each round dogs got eliminated. We got through the first round, then the secon, the third and then we were in the semi final. I waited back in England for the phone call...... he won, we"re in the final!!

So the plans were quickly made and we sent a great raiding party over to Dublin. We booked into a hotel and started drinking. We arrived at Harolds Cross and had a lovely table in the restaurant. Our dog had drawn trap 1 but he was a 7/1 shot. The dog in trap 3 (who went on to win the Irish Derby) was called He Said So and was an odds on favourite. As the dogs paraded I slipped outside as I wanted to watch the race on my own. As the dogs went into traps I lit a Benson and no doubt said a prayer. The traps opened and Brooklyn flew out - he led at the bend and there was trouble behind. He was 3 lengths clear down the back straight. The crowd was going barmy but I just watched in stunned silence. Suddenly a dog emerges from the pack and starts to make ground up. He"s catching us but we"re now at the last bend. suddenly it dawns on me - we can"t get caught, he"s gonna do it. I let out an almighty roar as he crossed the line and our whole party erupts. Many years of dreaming, many disappointments on the way but this is the big one. We did it!

The trophy was presented by Jenny Pitman and I was interviewed live on Irish TV by Tracey Piggott. Dont know what I said but didn"t say anything silly. We celebrated long into the early hours and it was a night I"ll never forget. So now we had tasted the big time so the obvious thing was to try again. We wanted more...!

2nd and final dog chapter to follow. That"s enough for now!

Will complete the final part of the dog story soon, been down with the man flu for the last week or so but almost better now which is good as........

I"M OFF TO VEGAS IN THE MORNING   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Will post on here if anything interesting happens. Spending the first 4 nights downtown at the Nugget, and am planning on playing their $1k main event on Saturday. Could get distracted, as my nephews are already out there but that"s the current plan. Will play some Venetians and probably a wsop but generally just looking forward to a great 2 weeks. My last 10 nights are at Harrahs so memories of APAT Vegas will no doubt return.

Did I ever tell the story about a well known APAT regular and the blondes in a sports car ......... (oh no stop, what happens in vegas and all that!).

So wish me luck, here we go again.......................

Arrived safe and sound and played the nugget event. Was running well til some idiot shoved 40 bigs with A 10 against my QQ and got there. Never mind, got in a cab straight up to the rio as Danny is going well in the 1500 he has about 45k with average about half that. Two levels left tonight I"m at the bar can"t watch him he could lose it all in two hands but fingers crossed he can make day 2.

Loving Vegas. felt really awful on the flight over with the flu bug but it was like a miracle a few hours after landing I was 100% again so all set for a great 2 weeks.

Tikay took my photo today as he was stunned to see a chezger shirt in vegas. Then just spotted Rich Offless playing cash at the rio and he took my photo too, so I"m obviously famous!

OK hope we can run better soon.

Oh yes, I have a blog, it"s been so long I almost forgot! Keeping this updated is not my strong point. However, this is worthy of an entry.

I was sat on the train this morning heading up to London, and as you do I had my phone out looking for the latest news and gossip. Flicked onto the APAT page and for some reason clicked on the Hall Of Fame section. I came across the entry of Brendan Hartnett and on reading realised it"s the anniversary of his passing on Saturday, so I thought I"d make a short post in memory.

Those of you who knew him know his story and for those who didn"t get to meet him, suggest you read the section (link below) as his story is a special one.

if you"re having a beer on Saturday, raise a glass to Brendan - the expression "one of a kind" really does apply to him.
