Title: Side "Sporting" Events at WCOAP. Pingpong/pool,. etc....
Post by: Matt D on February 01, 2013, 16:06:19 PM
Following the success of the Amateur PingPong Association & Tour"s (APAT for short) Luton table tennis tourney, the tour has decided to include Nottingham as it"s next stop in late March, for it"s prestigious World Championship of Amateur Pingpong (WCOAP for short).

But, that"s not all. The Amateur Pool Association & Tour (APAT for short) are also going to be in town, holding the World Championships of Amateur Pool...

Finally the Amateur Pondboarding Association & Tour (aka APAT) will be in town too(!), for their World Championships!. (The World Championships of Amateur Pondboarding).

Update: 2nd Feb: A recent development also sees the Amateur Putting Association & Tour (APAT) hold their inaugural World Champs at the same time!

Before I look into booking up stuff and dates etc., can I have a brief show of interest for the following championships:

Update: 14th March: PingPong and Pondboarding details are now below:

PingPong:
Time/Date: 10am to 12.30pm, Sunday 31st March
Cost: £8 each (covers venue hire, trophy, and prize money 1st = £30, 2nd = £20, 3rd = £10, 4th = £10)
Venue: Rushcliffe Leisure Centre: http://www.leisurecentre.com/Centre-Home/rushcliffe-leisure-centre-swimming-gym-spinning-tennis/70.aspx
Distance from DTD: 4.1 miles / 10 mins: http://goo.gl/maps/vRRJU

Pool:
Time/Date: 9.45am to (whenever it finishes!), Friday 29th March.
Costs: £10 each (covers hire of tables, and prize money 1st = 40%, 2nd = 30%, 3rd/4th = 15% each).
Venue: Rileys Pool: http://www.rileys.co.uk/club/101/Nottingham
Distance from DTD: 3.0 miles / 9 mins: http://goo.gl/maps/MsBGU
For more details, see Rodders post here: http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13213.msg207246#msg207246

Pin bowling (of the 10-pin variety):
Time/Date: 11am to 1pm-ish, Saturday 30th March.
Costs: £12.25 each (covers hire of bowling lane for 2 games, shoes. No prizes for this, just play for the glory of getting the best score!)
Venue: http://www.tenpin.co.uk/nottingham/
Distance from DTD: ermmm.. 0.2 miles / 42 seconds: http://goo.gl/maps/QI1zT

Pondboarding: Cancelled due to damage caused to cable park during recent flooding.

Pitch and Putting: Cancelled due to sub-zero temps.

Ha, I"m guessing it won"t have.

I think we"ll probably have to hire 4 tables for a couple of hours in Rileys for the pool comp.

From this day forward The Amateur Putt-Putt Association and Tour (APPAT) shall be known as the Amateur Putting Association and Tour. (APAT).

I reckon a putt-off could be a good little challenge, and won"t take much longer than 2 hours (absolute max)...

All ruck up at a crazy/adventure golf centre, divide into groups of 4, and play 18 holes. The lowest score scoops the trophy, and perhaps a cash prize?...

Will add to OP tomorrow, and investigate possible venues...

How much running does a pool event take, we just need a knock out format. I am pretty sure we all just need to turn up at a place with a table, ideally local Rileys or somewhere but if people prefer the bowling place over the road from DTD and sort it out ourselves. £10 a man, Winner Warren Jones takes all at the end :-)

10 pin bowling is also an option for those of you who play such things btw.

10 pin bowling is also an option for those of you who play such things btw.

Are you volunteering? If so, thanks :)

Hi all, I"ve been a bit too busy (and slack) to update thread. Will update list of names tomorrow - so if your name isn"t on the list on the first page and you have posted you"d like to play, then don"t worry, it will be tomorrow.

Would anyone like to volunteer for running the pool comp? I think running 4 events in addition to my APAT-proper commitments is going to be too much.

I"m cool with running the putting, pondboarding, and pingpong.

Well if we need an "organizer" then I don"t mind. I am pretty sure I can manage it *lol* with this in mind can we get a plan for these events:-

I say put the pool on the Saturday as it will be the biggest of the extra events and we don"t want it clashing with the team event. That might not work for everybody.

When are we wakeboarding Matt?

Thanks Rodders, that"s awesome! :) Though you may find there"s a lot more to it than you thought and wished you hadn"t lol :)

I"m out for the day now (wakeboarding then roller derby = wtf?). Will try and sort a schedule tomorrow or Mon latest.

You can"t get a pint at putt putt so we thought you had posted in error thinking it was meant to be pint pint.

As I appear to have accidentally volunteered to run pool I am going to speak to an expert later and get the tournament sorted.

How do people want to do it and how early would they like to start, what day is best. How seriously are people taking it? Should I bring my cue?

I"ve finally got round to updating the list in the second post. Please can you all check your name is on the list, and if not give me a shout!

I"m closing entries (aside from any I may have missed off the list!) for the following events:

Pingpong (20 players)
Pool (36 players! good luck Rodders!! :) ).

The following events have spaces left.
Putting (23 players, 1 space left)
Pondboarding (3+3 participants, 6 spaces left).

I"ll post up dates tomorrow. (need to check with the boss which day-off I"m having at WCOAP, as will run the pondboarding that morning. other events will be Sat/Sun, and either Fri or Mon).

Important question is when are we holding each of these events. I don"t care as I am there for the duration but I assume some people are coming and going at different times. For example are we holding an event on the Thursday, I was going to suggest a "meet and greet" that day and maybe food in Nando"s then heading over to DTD for the start of the WCOAP.

However we seem to have quite a bit people wish to fit in here so maybe we want to hold something on Thursday if people are there.

Update & Help required!

Putting
I"ve just spent an hour googling for "Mini Golf" / "Crazy Golf" / "Adventure Golf" in Nottingham, without any success. Does anyone know a course within a few miles max. of DTD?

Ideally Adventure Golf I guess, as Crazy Golf requires limited skill (and a lot of luck).

Ping pong
Ping-pong wise, I"ve emailed the Nottingham Table Tennis association to ask for Venues. Will update when I hear back.

Pondboarding
Will be at the same venue as last year"s championships: http://www.nwscnotts.com/

Pool
Is being organised by Rodders.

I"ll post up dates of each event sooooon.

Rather amazingly, there isn"t a single mini golf/adventure golf/crazy golf (that I"m yet to find - there must surely be one?) in the whole of Nottingham! The nearest looks to be about 10 miles outside, and looks pap.

So how about a bit of pitch and putt instead?... Venues will always hire you golf bats, so don"t worry about not having your own.

Here"s a couple of possibilities:

Nice one :)

Note to everyone: If we play pitch and putt instead of just putting, don"t worry about being crappo at golf. And don"t worry about having to carry a huge bag o" golf bats round the course. You"ll be given a couple: a 7 (or 9) iron, and a putter.

Also for the pool event I am thinking of just all piling down to Rileys and getting some tables and playing straight knockout for about £5 or £10 per man.

The tables are about £4 per hour (off peak deal if we book online) so we could get two or three and should be able to get a tournament in one morning, this would have to be Friday or Monday though assuming we can do it on Bank Holidays. If we book the tables 11am to 1pm gives us time to get back to DTD.

http://www.rileys.co.uk/bookOnline.aspx

Table cost for three tables for 2 hours would be £24 if I have understood the offer correctly.

The only problem might be that it is a long weekend so a bit busier than normal so might be worth us booking the tables in advance.

They also do half decent food and beer in these clubs and have free membership. Should be a laugh, and work quite well. I am happy to book the tables and pay for them in advance as long as we have people who commit to turning up (and will still pay their share of they don"t).

If anybody is not a member please use this link to join online, it"s free that way. I think it is free anyway but best just join up in advance anyway.

Spoke to the Minature Golf Association of GB, who recommended the following places:

Coalville is 26 miles from Nottingham, so I don"t think we"ll bother with that.

and

15 miles away, and rumoured to have shut down lol...

I think I"ll probably have to withdraw from the synchronised drowning Matt.

I assumed I"d have forgotten about my head by now, but it is still tender and feels weird to the touch. Still strange things going on back there, though I have no idea what, cos I can"t see. I"ll have to get Debjani to take a look.

Anyway, based on my experience in the inaugural drowning championship last year, I know that when you crash, you don"t have much control over what goes where and I don"t think I am ready for even a soft bump on the back of my head just yet.

If you decide to include an egg-and-spoon race in your sports extravaganza, I"m your man.

Pingpong can either be on Sat 30th or Sun 31st (they are closed Friday, so can"t hold it then).

Cost is £70 for 2.5 hours hire, which should be enough time if we run to the same format as our last event.

We"re looking at 10am > 12.30pm. So which day would be best? I"m inclined to go for Sunday AM...

Pool = Friday (probably).
Pingpong = Sunday (see first post here: http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13213.0 for details).

Golf is going to be Saturday AM. Just need to choose a course.

Am i too late to get involved? Pool an ping pong or either if not :) thank you xxx

I"ve stuck you on the list for both. You"re 1st reserve for PingPong (I"m 99.9% sure you"ll get to play though!), and you"re in the Pool atm :)

Rodders,

hmmmm, just thought 36 players for pool...

If you"re going to do a very quick knock-out style, that will play out:

36 > 18 > errrr.. 9?...

I think we need to change to 32 players max. 32 > 16 > 8 > 4 > 2

= 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 games = 31 games... Probably doable in the time you have.

Is every game going to be "best of 1"? Some people might feel a little put-out to go all that way for 1 game! :)

Or do you have another format planned other than KO-stylee? If you"re doing Leagues then K.O, I reckon 4 tables would be best...

Although I"ve played pool for several years, I"ve never played Black Ball Rules, so would like to stand down from the event. Might help you achieve your 32 players to make it a straight knockout.
Good luck to those who take part!

The Par 3 course at Edwalton is decent, but is definitely not Pitch n Putt

This might be what you"re looking for

Pitch and Putt
(Open throughout the year (apart from Christmas Day) - 10:00am - Dusk)
Woodthorpe Grange Park, Woodthorpe Drive NG5 4HA

http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3275#pitch

7 miles from DTD and about as awkward a journey as Nottingham offers...

or, there appears to be putting at Highfields Park, which is just under a mile from DTD

Hey, please take me off the pool list.

Also, I"ll do the golf if it"s just putting, but I"m not interested if it"s a pitch and putt cheers.

Definitely in for the Ping Pong (My main event of the whole trip, including the poker tourneys I"m playing haha).

Just thought of a very simple idea for the putting, that could be very entertaining IMO. You could buy one of them very cheap putting machines (you must know, the ones that pop the ball back out if you put it in). Each player could get say 10 putts each for round 1 and the top 8 scores go through to a knockout round. They are best used on carpet though, I doubt DTD would allow it there ha, but you could maybe tie it in whilst the ping pong is going on (if the hall is big enough you could just use a corner of the room).

Maybe I"m well off with this, just "putting" the idea out there anyway!

I don"t need exact numbers but the more there are the more tables we will need to book to make a tournament happen in the right time frame so i could do with a pretty accurate ish number if possible, please :)
what i do need, is a definite start time an desired duration, anyone? xxx
also, as a suggestion for pool, instead of a straight knock out, could we not run it in a similar way to the ping pong (an possibly some famous football tournament or other...) ie a set of round robins of 4 people, top two from each group go through etc. Means people will at least get the 3 games within their group? Just a thought xxx

I would have thought having enough would be the problem - you will have a time limit to fit all these games in to because of people having to get to DtD.

I think we might organise some last minute 10-pin-bowling... Outside golf in sub zero temps is no fun.

I"m going to PM everyone who registered interest in Pingpong (who hasn"t subsequently withdrawn) to confirm attendance, venue, start time etc. over the next 24 hours, so I can have a final-ish number.

Hi all

After speaking to Lucy over the last few days (Lucy is REALLY good at pool btw) she has been really helpful with all this. I would suggest we put a start time on this of 10am to ensure we get the games played? I really doubt that everybody on the list is turning up but if they do we are looking at starting in a round of 32 (with byes) and are basically looking at that anyway. We only really have 3 hours.

How long do best of 3 frame games take? 20 minutes at the higher end? So we would need 4 tables and be able to play best of 3 in the time frame. Maybe make the final best of 5 if we have the time.

Can"t see the group thingy working tbh unless somebody can suggest of a way of doing it within the time frame.

Never been into a Rileys but assuming it works the same as other pool/snooker clubs, can we not just start with as many tables as we need and close them off as the numbers come down?

Title: Re: Side "Sporting" Events at WCOAP. Pingpong/pool,. etc....
Post by: AMRN on March 25, 2013, 11:54:59 AM
Some calcs on timings below, based on 32 players in a straight knockout, with all matches as best of three (assumed 2.5 frames per match average).

Pools of 4 would be tough if all 32 turned up and we would need at least 6 tables to get through in under 3 hours, based on each match being only 1 frame all the way to the final.

This is worst case scenario - timings would decrease with any byes.
Have assumed 10 minutes per frame (should be ample, and would include a bit of contingency or arguing time)

Remember, this is only a gap fill event before the poker - in two to three hours, we"re always going to struggle to make it an exceptional event with lots of play for everyone.

We may need to open up some extra tables, just spoken to a couple of guy"s who know a lot about running pool tournaments and playing them (both are top 5 players in Wales) and they reckon that doing this with 4 tables in 3 hours should be no problem at all. I doubt it will be hard to open a couple of extra tables if we need too though.

Steve, question for you. I didn"t know that Black Ball rules were not used in England (until Lucy told me last weekend), as most of the people in this event are from England do you think it would be better to change to World Rules as constantly having to check on the rules will eat up time.

I don"t think it makes that much difference to be honest - we could use Uncle Tom Cobley"s APAT rules, so long as whichever rules are used are published on here in advance, and have a copy printed and to hand on the day.

I don"t know enough pool rules to say whether Black Ball is better than World Rules.... I"m just aware that rules seem to differ dependent on which pub I"m in, and what day of the week it is, and as a result there always seems to be arguments about rules.  I"m sure Lucy can advise....

There will always be arguments over rules. Based on that, The main bonus of playing world or epa rules is that rileys promotes them and there should be copies of them on the walls. Also, i kno them inside out, as will the staff at rileys, so arguments would be resolved with a fair amount of consistency an speed...just a thought. I shall ring today an initially i will ask for 5 or 6 tables from 10am on xxx

Nice one Lucy

As for World Rules, I have an idea of these rules but don"t really know them, but should be able to learn them by Friday.

Gonna go for a game tomorrow to try and get use to playing them, the two visits and no open table after a foul will confuse me though *lol*.

Once you get your head around world rules they make a lot of sense but they totally change the dynamic (i"m a pool geek) google epa world rules. Like i say, rileys will have the rules on the wall or available somewhere and should have knowledge themselves to help out :) xxx
speaking of which, 6 tables for 3 hours (10-1) = £24 which should make it less that £1 per person...prizes? Entry cost? Anyone?
There is already a discount on the bar during the day, all pints are around the £2.50 mark etc, nothing particularly special. Hope this is all ok? xxx

the ping pong event in Luton had a buy in of £10 per head, from which expenses were taken, and the remainder paid out in prize money.

So, for the pool, if we went with a tenner per person, and got 32 people, that would be £320 - £24 for table hire, = £296 prize pool. Then pay that out to the winner, runner up, and losing semi finalists.... say 40%, 30%, 15%, 15%

Rather late, but if any spaces in pool or ping pong, Tony Trippier would like his name included please.

To those playing pingpong:

1. Please check your name is on the list on the first page.
2. Turn up here: http://www.leisurecentre.com/Centre-Home/rushcliffe-leisure-centre-swimming-gym-spinning-tennis/70.aspx on Sunday 31st to be ready to play your first game at 10am!.
3. Await further instructions tonight.

Rodders, PM me with any pool info you want posting on the first page and I"ll stick it up.

Note, there is no Pondboarding, and no Putt(putt). However, I am setting up a last minute bowlathon to take place on the Saturday AM. I will offer first place to those who have either mentioned bowling, or were due to play golf. Reckon we can probably get 18 of us in? (3 groups of 6, 2 games each = a coupla hours?). The winner of this event gets glory! And I may ebay a trophy after the event...

The pool is quite straight forward, be at Rileys by 9:45 on Friday, if all 36 turn up will will need 4 prelim rounds to get it down to 32 and will do this via random draw, if this happens I am going to drop out and just run the draw (I may end up doing this anyway just to ensure we run to time) and make sure the timings go as they should do, this should be quite easy given the number of tables we have.

If (as I suspect) we get between 16 and 32 then the first round draw will include byes and will be random draw best of 3 each round up until the final which depending on time may be able to be best of 5.

The entry fee is £10 which pays for tables and the rest goes into the prize fund which is split

1st - 40%
2nd - 30%
semi final losers - 15%

Rules are EPA World Rules (whatever they maybe) Shooter and Lucy know them and can help with any disputes.

No, not allowed. You have to play. I"m sure you can still direct traffic between shots, or others can work out who is next to play.

If you"re playing at DTD today (Thursday), Friday or Saturday, I"ll come and collect £8 off each of you and get you to draw a card from a pack to designate your group. The top 2 players from each group of 5, will proceed to the quarter finals.

If you"re not at DTD until Sunday, then please let me know if you still want to play, as will obviously require you coming up Saturday evening, or making a very early start on Sunday!... If you fall into this group, please can you PayPal me £8 to: matt [at] gamblingnetwork [dot] com , and PM me when you have. I"ll then mark you down as definitely attending and pick a card on your behalf to select your start group.

See you all at DTD! :)

Putting

I"ve unfortunately had to cancel the World famous APAT Putting event, due to a) crap weather & b) crap putting courses in Notts.

(10) Pin bowling

We have decided to replace this event with (10) Pin Bowling instead. This will take place at 11am on Saturday morning, cost £12.25 each (thanks to Jo Sharp"s contacts!) which will get you 2 games & hire of shoes.

The venue is directly opposite DTD (42 seconds in car, < 3 mins by foot). Details of venue are on the first post in this thread here: http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13213

I have PMed the following players, who were signed up for golf, to give them first refusal for the bowling:

So, if you"re in, please just send me a quick reply via PM and I"ll mark you down on the list.

I need a rough idea of numbers so I can book the correct number of lanes. (I reckon we can get 6 players per lane, so 18 players = 3 lanes). So, please reply to this before 3pm-ish on Friday, and I"ll ring up and get us booked in. No need to ship me any money now, just pay when you turn up.

Thanks
Matt
