Title: Irish Championship
Post by: APAT on April 21, 2008, 22:58:24 PM
Details have now been fully confirmed with the Fitzwilliam in Dublin.

The event will be held on June 14th & 15th as advertised.  Capacity of 140 runners, with 15 seats going to the host cardroom.

Live satellites are being held across the UK on May 17th (May 10th in Newcastle), online sats on May 18th & 19th with the remaining seats going via direct buy in on May 20th.

Good to know

Shouldn"t this be on the main APAT National Championship board and not the Seat Exchange?

Or is this just in anticipation of the huge number of people who will want to go but won"t have a seat?

Only 125 seats available for Qualifiers and Direct Buyins Des? (+15 for cardroom)

Ive not had a whinge for a while but that seems awefully low for a National Event. I know how much hard work goes into sorting events like this and I certainly do not envy your job, but such small numbers are going to leave a lot of people disappointed (Edinburgh has similar numbers and people have been left wanting)

Are there any plans afoot to have a couple of starting days? 1a 1b etc in the future, to enable more of your members to play? or any other ideas that could come off?

Graeme

The history of the APAT competitions has proved that demand will always outstrip supply. Cardrooms are simply not big enough, and time is valuable. This is an amatuer association, which means we all have jobs which provide our main income, and holidays to play poker can be scarce.

We have had a competition with a day 1a and 1b, and that was essentially because it was a bank holiday weekend. Most people work Monday to Friday and would have to take a day or 2 off, to allow for travelling, and 3 days can be a long time away from the family, not just for the runners but for the organisers as well.

Since the very first tournament in Birmingham I think each and every member has had the dissapointment of missing out on an event. But we just try harder, and erm, pray....

I am not sure if there are any future plans for day 1a and 1b again, only Des can answer that question.

Yeah everything you say makes sense and i do understand how much effort goes into each tourney, hence the great time had by all , which at the end of the day, you lot should be very proud of!

Its just a shame that UK Cardrooms are so small as im sure we could easilly sell out most events 5x over!

Im also spoilt living near to Aspers Newcastle which can have 230 playing at one time, which is why when i hear 125-150 max i think its low

Agreed on all counts Graeme, and I think Jimmy has responded well to your points.  The only other point that I would make is that we are a National Championship series, so it is essential that we go to Scotland, Wales and Ireland - where venue sizes are quite small.  Running events in hotels is not an option at this point, for licensing and equipement reasons.

Text two minutes before required - leg it - drink pre ordered pint - leg it back -- I have it off to a fine art........

Ger, if you talk to my good lady, she"ll give you the telephone number of the hotel directly across from that bar.

We stayed there last year - 20 yards from the bar, 60 yards from the Fitz......... perfect  :D

Apologies to Leigh and Neil for the delay in replying - I had to make sure that Caz had already booked before the riff raff get in.  ;D

The hotel is the Fitzwilliam Townhouse Hotel, the website is:-

http://www.fitzwilliamtownhouse.com/index.htm

It"s not exactly cheap, but it"s in a great location near the card room.

Caz and I are going for an extended stay in Dublin, Thursday to Tuesday with hopefully a little poker on the Saturday and Sunday.  ;D

Transaction ID: 21929384

I ordered last night but going by the number of seats that were remaining yesterday afternoon, the chances that I"ve actually managed to get a seat is really slim. So if I dont get a seat, I"ll be keeping a close eye on the seat exchanges!!!

I had a similar problem, in that most hotels only do 2 or 3 nights min and I only want to stay saturday night.
I ended up booking a hostel, the Jacobs Inn, near connoley station for 26 Euro. given the lack of sleep I intend to have this is still probably a rip off!!

It is about 20-25 mins walk to the fitz (so taxi maybe)

I booked in here for the weekend on Sunday - http://www.latchfords.ie/

More self-contained apartments (with small kitchen) than hotel rooms. Just round the corner from the Fitzwilliam.

Did it through Laterooms which I think gave me a discount.

Yeah I"m on the same flight back on Monday as well, think Billy & Davie fly back to Edinburgh in the morning so will prob hit Dublin for a couple of beers before heading home.

Well everyone, what a superb weekend. Was excellent meeting loads of interesting people and had a great laugh into the bargain.

Not so much a game of poker, more a trip to Alton Towers. 6 shots on Oblivion, 3 goes of Air and 5 spins on Nemesis later and it was all over. Saturday started like "oops gonna be one of those days" when I got a flush about 3 hands in and lost to quad 8"s. Thankfully didn"t squander too many chips on that but not long after was down to 5.5k. I felt bad for a while, but not as bad as Scouse at Cool Hand Lukes when his opponent picked up suited Aces  :o . Sat tight for a while after but after sussing out the table made a couple of moves raising in cut-off/button with garbage cards - 8/2 hit 8/4/2 flop and won a nice size pot, then 6/7 hit 8/8/7/7 on turn and again won a nice size pot again.

Went up to about 26k after then getting some good starting cards (see below) but donked off half to Declan when we both hit an Ace flop and he had my kicker beaten on an all-in push (cheers again for the great advice later Declan, much appreciated).

Moved upstairs after that and poor Pete from Leicester landed between me and Billyho. I quickly got back over the 25k mark when my QQ doubled up against someone"s 99. Then after passing half his chips to Billy, Pete raised my BB of 1k to 5k. I put him all in for his remaining 6.5k with my AQ suited (which I picked up through the day about 7 times, along with AK numerous times as well) and my hand held up.

Forth Thistle (Davie B) had me chanting "happy dayyyyyyyyyys" under my breath for a while after this, but disaster struck when we got down to 30 players.......sitting with about 50+k Our table got split.

I got placed in the position from hell at the table from hell. Mark Redshaw had more chips than burger king and was using them with very good affect. I couldn"t get even remotely interested in the game because of his and David Smiths" raises. I was getting hand after hand of complete Paul Ince, tried a raise at 1.5/3k blinds with pocket 5"s only to be put all in by Mark so threw them away. With blinds at 2/4k and more Barry White cards than you could shake a stick at, I decided to push my last 38k on another David Smith raise on my BB with A/7. He called with pocket 8"s, hit trips on the flop and I was well & truly out of that cheap hotel!

I"ll definitely be coming back to a theatre near you very soon..........All the best everyone until then and cheers for a brilliant time.....................and particular thanks to the boys who made it possible. Billy, Neil, Davie B, Graham, Derek, Ross, Davie and all the APAT team.

Even cheekier than the 6/7 that got me the full boat 7"s over 8"s  :-[

Those  ad1 kd &  ah qh hands really did maximise my comeback though after running into those quad 8"s early
