Win the button comp. Worlds worst player (one of them anyway) two to my right - getting lucky and gets LAG when stacked, so paying a few blinds too. He"s just called with QT on A9x to hit running KJ. Standard...

£25 Win The Button - 36/42

Well that couldn"t have gone any worse.

7.5k starting stack plus 10% early bird bonus. Win a couple of pots in the first 10 mins. 9c7c on 963hh flop 5 way. Stab, get two callers, running hearts turn and river but chop. Raise and double barrel KJ from MP on Axxx board to get to 9k. Didn"t win a pot after that.

Let me introduce you to Big Nose Pokerstars Al. He"s already busted his first entry within 10 mins, and gets moved to my table (two to my right) with his re-entry, replacing a nit. He"s dreadful, as evidenced by the following:

1) 25/50. UTG+1 opens to 200. 2 callers and Al makes it 800 from the SB with AJdd. 2 callers to see a flop of 663hdd. Al donks 1500, HJ calls, CO raises to 4500. Al flats pretty quickly and HJ dwell folds. Turn 9h. Al checks, then surprisingly tanks for nearly a minute when CO moves in for his last 1500. He eventually calls and obv binks the diamond against 65. Sigh, when he has chips he plays pretty much ATC.

2) 75/150. Al opens to 400 on the button. SB calls and I come along from the BB with 74. Flop K74, checked round. I donk 1/2 pot on turn J, called by Al. River J goes chk-chk after I get counterfeited. No idea whether he thinks he"s good or not.

3) 100/200. He flats a c-bet in position with QT on A9x vs a guy with about 15BBs. Naturally hits running KJ.

4) 100/200. One limper, MP shoves for 1200, HJ shoves for 2900. After posting 5 blinds in a row (the guy on my right has been moved and the two on my right are winning all the pots - all the guys on my left are tight-passive and pretty card dead) I"m pretty happy as it looks like I might not have to pay my blind. Until Alan colds on the button with A5o v KJ and AT. I"ve folded a 5, but doesn"t stop him getting there on AQ245.

He"s one of those people you look at and wonder if it"s possible to run better. I have to sit there incredulous, being disciplined, having to make small moves and play like a hero just to win the little pots when I brick for the umpteenth time - only to survive long enough to get it in good and get spiked, probably on the bubble. Yes, I"m ******* bitter.

Anyway, totally card dead, no spots either - not even Ax/Kx or some broadways/SCs to 3b light with and have some backup. At 150/300 we"re 7 handed, HJ opens to 800, Alan flats on the button. I move in for 5700 with AK. Orig raiser dwell flats with 88. 8 in the window on an 89679 board.

Didn"t take the re-entry given it was only a 25BB stack at that point - and should probably take the hint the poker gods are giving me (though I think they must be telling me I shouldn"t play - ever).

Surely the only way is up - and at least this is the little one on the schedule! Small victories and all that :)

Agreed, although, sat in my shorts, with a beer, listening to Bumble commentate on a test match. Life couldnt get much better unless Nick Compton announced his retirement from test match cricket.

£50 Deepstack Freezeout - 4/49 (even chop 4 way)

Well, the polar opposite of the above. Endless moaning seems to do it.

Was never all-in over the course of the tournament. Never had to get lucky at showdown, won most of my chips post-flop - for once when people played terribly against me they didn"t get there in unbelievable fashion. If I had a slightly marginal situation things would be on my side (i.e. 3bet AJ, get peeled by AT).

I.e. 400/800 Loose UTG limps (15k), UTG+1 (30k) limps, I limp UTG+2 (50k) with 99. Tight button (14k) dwell raises to 3400. Blinds fold and both limpers call. With over 10k in the middle I don"t mind taking the deal money and hopefully flipping with the button, so I effectively jam by re-popping to 36k. Button tank folds TT, UTG folds and UTG+1 snap calls his above average 40BB stack...with ATo.

Obviously I"m horrified, but actually win the flip (the only one of the four I would actually beat at showdown too). I"m staggered. 70k pot and I"m up to 90-100kish.

Went to FT as chipleader, didn"t really see much, got to about 350k at max but then went card dead for about half hour. When an even chop was proposed I wasn"t going to turn it down when I was the short stack - though we were all pretty close.

Took £545, and am stoked that the stake is in profit already. Dead chuffed as it"s my first half decent score for time!

£20 1R1A - 18/20

I treated this one like a freezeout, given just 13 runners sat down at the start (20 by the end of the rebuy period). Ended up taking £740.

Was basically card dead for the first 4 levels covering the rebuy period. Chipped up from 5.5k to 8k taking some pots without showdown.

Best hand I saw was AJ, called a raise in position (good as he had AK), missed and folded vs 3 oppos. Limped LP with 89, flopped A87dd, checked around 4 way, called a stab from the BB on turn 2d, SB also called, then managed to get some thin value on blank river vs 85.

Penultimate hand of the rebuy period was hilarious. 4 limpers to me at 100/200, I make it 1700 on the button out of my 8k stack with 77. Blinds and two limpers fold, HJ calls, then the CO moves in for 3.5k with KK. CO had only played a couple of hands, very passive, clearly inexperienced. I"m not in great shape vs her range but move in to iso as I"m miles ahead of the HJs range. He pretty much snap calls for his above average 7.5k stack with what he terms "suited connectors", i.e. Q3ss.

Board A6475. So from looking good to win the 9k side pot, then hitting my set on the turn to go huge favourite for a 22k pot (3x average), it all goes horribly wrong.

Leaves me with 475 at 100/200. Shove dark and everyone folds. I flip AQ, rabbit hunt and hit the Ace in the window. Standard.

With only £540 taken at that point I decide not to rebuy, they eventually took £740 but still not really worth it. 3 hands after the break I jam my 2.5BBs with Q9cc. Q3 guy in the BB calls with A7cc. Board xQxxA just to take the piss a little bit more.

Still, £40 more to be refunded.

£30 1R1A - 10/46

Nothing too exciting. Didn"t win a hand in the first hour to drop to 5k out of the starting 8,250. Took one rebuy and went to the break with 14k after raise, cbet, shove AJ on KTxx.

Won 3 more hands - all double ups!

43hh v J8cc on 632cc flop. I effectively 3jam flop and hold.
AJ v KThh on AA8hh. I open EP, 3 callers. Cbet 1/2 pot and call shove.
89 v 87 v J9cc on 853cc flop. J9 limps button, 87 completes. I check, SB jams short stack for 2xPot. I reship, get called by button and somehow hold.

Went a bit wrong after that, got put in a lot of marginal spots, including folding KK preflop (incorrectly). Villain had been fairly tight, never got out of line that we saw, seemed to slightly overbet his strong, non-nut hands. We both have 70k, over double average. He opens to 3k UTG at 500/1000/100. I make it 9k on the button (slightly bigger than usual as I expect a flat or shove). He then pretty much clicks it back to 20k. It"s so against his previous bet sizing, and when I can"t get a definitive physical tell I let it go and he shows QQ. Just an unfortunate combination of circumstances really - and everyone else at the table read him for AA/KK. I went with my gut, it"s usually right but unfortunately not on this occasion!

I picked up a double four flushing with A9 v shortie AK, shoved a few pots, then jammed 11x from the SB on the FT bubble with A3 into TT and didn"t get there. Left me with 8k at 3000/6000/500. Someone got knocked out 2 hands (which I"m forced to fold) later so I arrive at the FT with 7000 - obviously I draw the big blind!

Get it in with 73xx v K9xx v AcKs. Get my hopes up on Kx 7s 3s board but dashed on Js 8s run out.

One life not taken, so £30 refund due. Have updated 2nd post with current status.

Hey guys,

Apologies, but will have to scrub the Saturday game. When sorting out this schedule I wasn"t very smart in checking what I was already planning to do with friends - notably holding a Champs League/Froch v Kessler party.

With no guarantee on the comp and the GUKPT in Pompey it"s not likely to get a great deal of runners anyway - sorry guys for my ineptitude!

If I can play remotely from Wembley, bring it ;)

In all seriousness, I can play another Saturday - but this wouldn"t be until mid-late June. This comp doesn"t have a guarantee on it so runners are erratic, but nothing massive should clash so it"s possible though the stake would have to stay open for 2-3 weeks. Casino has dropped other guarantees as GUKPT Pompey is clashing.

If you can all vote on:

- Refund
- Play another Saturday 3+ weeks away
- Put the budgeted entry towards a Thursday £50 deepstack freeze, can do this 1st week of June.

Happy to play a later Thursday - though on the proviso that I"m not working the Friday. I don"t expect I will be as I run worse at jobs than I do at poker - but I am actively looking at the moment and have some irons in the fire.

Wed 22nd May - £20+5 Deepstack Turbo - 26/31

Cheap, crapshooty tournament - not that I got to the crapshooty part!

Dreadful table to start, uber stations to my left. Picked up a couple of AQ"s, 55 on 884 and 75 on A6493 - unfortunately couldn"t get paid on the latter as the lovely old lady 100% knows I"m only reraising near nuts against her when she fires. From 11k starting stack I get up to 13.5k at the break.

Drop to 11k iso-raising A8 against two limpers. JT8 board smashes the only callers range in the face.

Same guy then opens to 800 at 150/300 out of a 12k stack from the HJ. I 3bet to 2200 with A9dd out of my 11k stack. Villain flats.

Flop Qh 5d 2d

Villain checks, I bet 3200 leaving about 5.5k behind - so obviously never folding. Doesn"t stop him shoving KTo! I obviously snap and the Ts immediately binks the turn with the Jh on the river being no help.

At least this hilarity is easier to take having binked one of the earlier tournaments.

Have also browsed the upcoming schedule. I can play an extra £50 freeze as originally stated, or...

On Sat 7th June there"s a "link" game between Reading, Southampton, Portsmouth and Brighton. Day 1 is played in each casino, £50+6 with one rebuy or add-on. Top 10% go through to day 2 to be held at Portsmouth. £15,000 guarantee.

These link games are usually held between Southampton and Portsmouth only and they alone normally take £15-17k. With the other two venues it should crack £25k easily.

There are plenty of refunds due from unused lives/re-entries - more than enough to cover the entry plus R/A for this. Even if I can"t make it back to Southampton then Reading is within shooting distance, this should be uber value so I can try and make it for this if I can and if everyone is happy?

Thur 23rd May - £50+6 Deepstack Freezeout - 2/38

Yeah, came 2nd. Didn"t deserve to. First time in a long time I"ve run significantly above EV (now I know how the droolers feel). Only bit of my game working was value betting.

Even chip 4 way for £400 when 2nd in chips though only a shade above average (all of us v close), with £88 extra for the winner. 2 good players and 1 dreadful player, normally would prefer to play on but was taking me 3 peeks at my cards to differentiate between spades and diamonds. Ended up losing heads up.

Bit more awake so can say a bit more about the tournament.

Timing was off all night, and given I was on tables against opponents I"ve had a fair bit of history with it was a pretty funky night. Being results-orientated I always seemed to 3b/4b when it was wrong to, and bottle the opportunities when it was right to (though not 4betting 23hh on an A56r board can"t ever be too wrong!). Fortunately the tournament has the best casino structure I"ve ever seen - the average stack going onto the final table was over 40BBs, and I had over 70!

The major key hand was at 600/1200, two limps from weaker players, I may a big iso raise from the SB to 6400 with 88, and the BB (who thinks my range is pretty wide at any time) asks how much I"ve got and then moves in for ~30k. It"s a pretty bleurgh spot, probably should pass but I make the call, get shown QQ and get there on K9675. He wasn"t happy, but it gave me a stack I could kick on with so perhaps it was the right call even if in a bubble it was -EV? Probably justifying after the event, but I"ll take it! ;)

I have a major downer on the standard of local casino players - but plenty of good ones floating around yesterday, so was a properly fun tournament even if I didn"t play my best.

Cheers Gordon, however...

Sat 8th June - £50+6 1R/A Link game - 40/56

Nearly didn"t play it, was up in London for a mates birthday. Bit cheap so booked the coach up and back for the Friday. Get up fine, couple of hours karaoke, then head back - when it"s then pointed out that I"ve accidentally booked both legs for Saturday, not Friday. Feckers let me get up, and with the coach fully booked it looks like I"m stranded in London at 11:30pm. Fortunately a few people don"t turn up so am let on - unfortunately for you guys this hasn"t worked well for the stake.

Tournament got disappointing runners, only 160ish across all 4 sites, only just making the £15k guarantee. Both Reading and Brighton were up against other tournaments however, and with the prospect of day 2 in Pompey they didn"t fancy it (who would?). It also has a reputation of a pretty rubbish structure, which somehow Grosvenor didn"t rectify, despite it being 2 days rather than 1, and starting at 2pm rather than 4.

Anyway, spent most of the first 3 levels improving to the 2nd best hand. KT with the Ks, open CO, weak-passive button flats. Board runs out A7765 with four spades, button has A7 - played incredibly slow so I unavoidably pay him off. Next rotation I open A7, he flats Q9o, board KJT - don"t lose any money on that one. Flop OESD+FD on J8242 board, triple barrel, miss and villain holds on with KJo.

Go to the break with 10k of the starting 15k (two bullets of 7.5k, so life taken as expected). River a set against a competent player who pays me off and steal upto 18kish, then...

At 150/300, click CO to 600 with 54dd. Both blinds call. Flop 9c 6s 4h. I c-bet 700, SB calls. Turn 5s. Check, I bet 1900, SB calls. River Js and he donks 1500 which I snap off against his K7ss - interesting reverse float.

At 200/400, v Lag friend of mine clicks the button to 800. I jam effective stacks of 9k with K9o, get called by A2o which holds, leaving me with ~4k. Double with KJ v QT next hand.

Drop half of that iso raising a serial limper with A9, he"d spent the day limp folding out of a small stack, so obviously this time he limps shoves his 8BBs with QQ. Then repeat for my last 5k against another similar villain, who this time has KK vs my J8.

Never actually saw a hand. AT on the button was as good as it got (and I should"ve folded that pre).

That concludes this stake - thanks all for your support. Glad there was a return!
