Title: Offer - $2.50 180 man Stars Tournaments (Apply Within)
Post by: AAroddersAA on August 20, 2013, 10:30:20 AM
Hi Guy"s

Don"t know if there will be much interest in this but thought I would post it anyway. Having played quite a few of these games myself over the last few months they have the potential to be quite profitable. I was thinking that somebody might wish to take a shot at these so came up with this offer.

Stake is $250 to be used to play the $2.50 180 man turbo games on Pokerstars. The stake is a bit of a punt on my part (as it should be 200-300 buyins really) but the horse cannot lose so that is fine. You need to commit to playing at least 50 games per month though.

At the end of each month the profit is split 50/50 after stakeback which has to be paid first, so the first $250 profit you make must be returned to me before any profit is split after the stake has been returned it is 50/50 on any profit made at the end of each month. So after my initial investment has been returned at the end of each month we will split the profit, unless we decide we wish to do something else with it (ie build the stake for a shot at larger events).

This thread must be kept up to date with number of games played and profit/loss made

APAT's 1% will come from MY share if the profit

I would like to start this stake 01/09/2013 if possible, if not it will be 01/10/2013. Applications from Staker Licensed players should be posted in the thread. I would like applications to include

1) Expected Volume, very important in these games.
2) Links to an unlocked OPR and Sharkscope, this make for total transparacy.
3) Your experience in playing these games.
4) Any software you use whilst playing the games (ie PT4, HEM, tableninja etc)
5) Any other relevant info I need to be considering.

I want to take at least one person, may take two if there are two REALLY good applications.

Closing date for applications is 28/08/2013 as I will make a decision and xfer funds by 01/09/2013

1) Expected Volume, very important in these games. My shifts at work have recently changed, so I will be working Monday and Tuesday 1-10, and then 7-4 for the rest of the week, so I will have plenty of time to put alot of volume in to this, would be looking to 3/4 table as this is where i feel most comfortable!

2) Links to an unlocked OPR and Sharkscope, this make for total transparacy.

http://www.sharkscope.com/#Player-Statistics//networks/PokerStars/players/fatcatstu (http://www.sharkscope.com/#Player-Statistics//networks/PokerStars/players/fatcatstu)

3) As you know, I played a load of these for our challenge in June, and it didnt go particularly well. What I will say is that I wasnt using a HUD at that point, which I intend on using this time, and my play wasnt particularly poor I dont think, and I am confident that I have the game to do well and make us both some money in these.

4) Any software you use whilst playing the games (ie PT4, HEM, tableninja etc)

I will be using HEM as of September.

5) Any other relevant info I need to be considering.

My online game has improved alot this year in particular. I am playing with a cool head, making reasonable decisions rather than playing tilted/emotional.

I firmly believe that I will do well for us on this, no matter how long it lasts and would really give my all to it.

Ill have a go.

Used to be in a study group for these but had to cut short to old job

At work so apologies if post is a mess.

Volume: happy 24tabling these, as decisions are fairly std. I"d aim 500 games a month minimum

As said lots of experience in playing and coaching. Feel free to filter my stats on sharks cope username s4ooter. 2012 onwards in when I got used to the games

Software. I have a HUD on PT4 specifically for 180s, table ninja, icmizer and a Skype list full of 180 grinders and coaches to discuss hands with

Why am I applying?

Withdrawn all monies online for upcoming holiday, but this would be (variance permitting) a good chance to make us both some $$$

I would like to be considered for this staking, if I am not too late. I played in the recent league that you set up and finished 2nd.

The 180 man turbo games were a new format for me at the time so it took me a week or so to adjust . I have a lot of experience in mtts and online cash games and play most days. After a bit of experience at the tables and watching a few strategy vids / articles I soon found what was needed.
I am a very motivated person, especially when set a challenge and I agree that they have the potential to be very profitable.
I would be able to play 130 - 180 of these during September. I will be missing a few days because I am playing GUKPT Manchester.

When I wrote this thread I was not sure anybody was going to respond. I certainly did not expect 3 players of this caliber to answer. I have only selected one but I am 100% sure that if the other two made their own threads to play this under similar terms to this one they would be snapped up very quickly. I am sure all three players are +EV in these games and would win money long term.

It is hard to make a choice based on ability as we have three excellent players who understand how to play this kind of game. They show good stats and I know all three personally and can see merits to selecting all three.

My selection is Stu. tbh This may be influenced by the fact he is a mate of mine and therefore I know him better than the other two but I have talked to him a lot about poker of all kinds and I know how good a player and thinker he is. He hides it well and you would not know it at the table with him but the Stockton Massive are masters of disguise. I will leave it at that :-)

If Dann and Craig are still interested in this I would really recommend they start their own staking thread. I am a degenerate so will probably buy shares anyway.

So anyway Stu, good luck us let"s do some epic winning !!!!!!!!

Don"t forget the rail could be an epic thread.

First little session in the book!

Really enjoyed myself, kept it to a max of 4 tables going at once, which seemed to work.

Ended up with a 2 cashes, a min in an early one and 2nd in my last one to finish, which resulted in a total profit of $59.74 from 13 games, which is a start i am delighted with.

A few notes, lost concentration in one hand late on, which resulted in me busting in 30th place which i am annoyed about. I was concentrating too much on the one that i was running deep in and didnt pay enough attention!

This was a big hand on the FT that I was not too sure about...

Just put another 7 in, got 1 min cash out of it, with a bust out in 30th again when my AQ flopped a Q to go with his 7. Slightly disapointing to not get another bigger finish, but still a solid day.

New profit $44.90

Yeah i said to Rodders at the time, hated it pretty much immediately, especially when he showed JJ... Think that was pretty much the only glaring error I made in the tourny, which is good, but definitely got away with an utter stinker there.

ICM.

He is the shortstack and our range should be tighter as he will be forced to make his move first.

So essentially you are looking to ladder in a $2.50 mtt?

There is nothing really wrong with that. Sometimes it is correct to ladder, the stakes are not relevant, I would not be looking to do so in this spot but I sometimes do if it is the right thing to do.

I am not sure that the 6BB stack makes a huge difference here and the main problem with reshoving this hand is position, the min raise UTG is strong. Saying that I don"t think it is as bad as Stu seemed to suggest, not that I am saying I like it either, if it was a button raise and we shove the BB it is almost standard.

fwiw Stu was a bit unlucky not to win this event as he lost a flip that would have won him the tournament heads up, then was very short so could not do much.

Aside from ICM, which I don"t think is that relevant here, as we not looking to min cash in these, the 6BB player needs to be considered, at times, as they might be calling off here and we don"t particularly want to go heads up in this spot with Q high.
Obv this is going to be player dependent, hence getting notes on players for spots like this

Calling time on that session for a bit, finished with another min cash, finishing 15/180. Ended session $34 down over all, which isnt ideal, but am happy with how i played and was close to some big scores, but the cards just didnt fall right.

Will be playing another session later tonihgt I would imagine.

Do you have charts for shove/fold decisions?
Ray Norton was crushing these games at higher stakes using one.
He"s acknowledged as a master and yet even he has just had an awful downswing and gone bust.

I dont have a clue what one would look like dave.

In this particular hand, I dont see people limping and calling off for their lives much at this stage in these. Granted i would have prefered a more suited connected type hand to do it with, but honestly couldnt see a call coming at all and it put me chip lead!!!

In other news, i just came 2nd in my last one of the night, which leaves the bank roll on $417.04.

Today has been an absolute rollercoaster, but feel that I have played really quite well, and am over the moon that I have managed a strong finish to close the day slightly in profit!!

Games played - 80
Games cashed in - 16
Total Profit - $167.04

Bit suspicious of Renne473 early limp. Any history of this ?  With 6 still in hand and 2 having shown some strength its a fold for me with such a relatively weak holding. Its ladder, ladder, ladder for me but not very successful at these - so what do I know.

All pretty standard bar the 7-8 and a-5,  both folds pre for me dont think your ever in good shape with these 2 and you have enough chips to not have to get involved just let!  Enjoying the thread keep the updates coming and gl! :)
Title: Re: Offer - $2.50 180 man Stars Tournaments (Apply Within)
Post by: Fatcatstu on September 06, 2013, 10:51:02 AM
There had been very little limping from either if these 2 do far, it was all raise raise raise, so I read it as total weakness on their part and thought there was little chance of me getting called. If there is a raise from either then I muck fairly quickly!! As it was, they both played ball and folded and I was chip leader

The 78 hand was just a brain fart on my behalf!!

The ladders in these are tiny until you make FT, with no jump from 27_19 then 18-10, so making final tables with chips is always the way to go IMO unless someone cares to tell me different?

The A5 hand is likely to be OK tbh Stu, it is player dependent though and here is where we use our HUD, I would check their VP$IP against PFR before doing this but if they were players inclined to limp wide then it is an OK play. I tend to colour code players who will limp fold so I can shove marginal hands in LP in pots when they have limped in as I am super +cEV in those spots. Even if you get called you are going to be at least 30% and you will get lot"s of folds in these games. The HUD also has a stat for this.

I do get the concern with this play as well. The problem is when you get called you are usually getting called by pairs and better aces so are rarely in good shape. I would prefer this if it was done from the BB as my main concern would be the people still to act behind me. I would also be a bit concerned if a player who often raises suddenly wants to limp UTG unless the HUD gave me a reason to thing shoving would be +EV. This play actually works better in $4.50"s btw.

Do you have charts for shove/fold decisions?
Ray Norton was crushing these games at higher stakes using one.
He"s acknowledged as a master and yet even he has just had an awful downswing and gone bust.

Yeah, he might even be the best in the world at these games. He sold a stake in these on Blonde at 70/30 in his favour and I am disappointed I missed it as I would have snap invested, that was quite literally free money. I would suggest anybody who plays the $8 games try to avoid him.

This shows how swingy these games can be. At this level though it is harder downswing much more than 200BI due to the sheer amount of fish in the games. It is possible though.

The main difference though is he is a pro player that needs to make money to make his living. I don"t think he had an "awful downswing" as such though just a standard one? He was not winning enough basically and he just needed living money so chose to get staked for a while, a fairly standard thing for a pro to do?

From Ray"s diary 27 August

Currently going through my worst ever downswing ainec, would say maybe 3x as bad as any other downswing I"ve been through, and that"s probably massively understating it; Stars just won"t let me win. It"s pretty ironic as for the first time this year I"m actually working hard, in the last 6 weeks or so I"ve played over 5k games, and I"m down 5k. It"s pretty hard to produce those kind of numbers without there being major problems but I"m certain it"s just the most ridic run bad possible, I"m studying hard and have found no leaks, I know my ranges are solid, I just don"t win showdowns. To put those numbers into some kind of perspective, before this I had numerous sessions were I couldn"t lose, it was a joke how hard I was crushing it. Also my figures for the year inclusive of the 35s have me still winning at over $2 per game for the year, take out the 35s though and my figures are starting to look pretty ropey. As I said to James though, before this downswing started my figures for my own games showed me as the greatest, taking the past two months it"d seem I"m the absolute worst, I"m pretty confident I"m not the worst and have never thought I was the greatest.

One thing is for sure, when I do get through this and start crushing again it will be by far my greatest achievement in poker to date, and I"d say I"ve done pretty well but jesus this is testing me to the max. Another thing that I 100% gte I will stick to is this; If when I do start to crush again and once I have a few spare $"s again, if I then proceed to set fire to it acting like a ***** and not working hard and find myself back on the brink of busto I will quit the game for good. I think most of us who do this for a living probably underestimate the mental stress this is taking on us when it"s like this and I"m not going to allow myself to keep putting myself through it, I"m making it to hard for myself.

Sorry Stu thought it was the final table. Assuming its a 180 tourney, looking at chips tacks it looks as if now down to 14/15 and you have bigger than average stack. IMO there are still significant ICM considerations. I still think you need fewer than 6 players left to act in teh hand for it to be $+ev.

Again, want to say thanks to Rodders for the chance to play these, i am really enjoying myself, and it is bringing my game on fantastically I feel, in particular the mental side of it. I havent tilted once yet, i just keep on grinding and grinding.

Well that was rubbish! A bit furious with myself tbh.

Played 8 then forced myself to stop as Im far too tired, which if Im honest, I knew before I started. Shouldnt have bothered regging as my brain wasnt fully in it and it was just wasting money, which has result in my first losing session/day of the stake, and it could have easily have been avoided.

Muppet.

Roll stands at $406.33.

Sigh.

Right, thats it for the night, finished on $412 in the roll, despite cashing, what i think was at least 4 times in the 2nd session, all were min cashes, just couldnt get that little bit of luck to convert one to a big score, its coming though.

$162 in profit, and a ROI of about 65% i think.

Been talking to Rodders and showing him hands all the way through tonight and he seems fairly happy with the way I have played.

Bring on tomorrow, full day grind and the NFL tomorrow night! It shall be a good day.

On a final note, a way in which these have helped my mental state when playing poker.

If I win this, I am in top 15 coming into the business end...

Yesterdays stats were played 15 with 5 cashes, for about $30.

The plus side to look at is i was cashing in 33% of my games, which is superb and my overall is hovering around the 18-20% mark, which is again brilliant.

If i do say so myself!

Good work Stu, as you know mate with these you are going to get days when you play well, make all the right decisions and still can"t win, this does not mean you are playing bad or even running bad it is just the normal swings you expect in these. The videos I sent you talk a little bit about this.

During sessions aim to do the right thing all the time, sometimes you will lose, sometimes you will win. Long term you should end up a winner.

I will be joining you for a quick session this evening on these as I am taking a break from cash as I appear to be on positive tilt *lol*

Don"t think you give up any by taking ATo out of your utg open range, especially so in level 1. Not a fan of less than 3x this early either, we will mostly have multiple callers to this bet from utg which is also why I think ATo plays badly from utg.

As played I bet 65 on the flop, it achieves the same as 100. Bets on Ace hi flops normally are responded to somewhat honestly, excepting maybe the odd min raise on A45 type flops where 66-88 may make a "where am I" type raise.

Probably almost never getting bluffed on the flop, that said, I probably make a crying call and  hope villain shuts down or we spike a T on the turn.

Still happy with the fold, seemed fairly standard at the time, but just wanted to check.

The first a10 utg is a fold pre imo no need to get involved that early with a hand that isnt going to flop well.

How many are left in the second a10 hand??   This for me is a much closer to calling think we need to discount the origonal shove ~$1300 and when the the sb shoves for 10bb i thin kim calling there.  Do you call an 10bb open shove blind on blind with a10 when in the bb??  Think its a call to me.

For me this is signicantly different to previous hand a few days ago where you had AQ because previously it was the BB who shoved. Her it is a late position player whose range is likely to be much tighter. However IMO it is an easy call, because you have pot odds of 32.6% -  3380/(3600+3380+3380). You don"t have the odds to call aagainst AA,KK, QQ, or AK but he also has other pairs and AJ in his range often enough to make this a call, especially as you have significant chips left if you lose.

They have three people to act behind them and it"s an opened pot, I don"t think they are necessarily quite that wide.
Still calling cos we"re getting a decent price vs something like 88+ A8s+ A10o+ and likely some KJ/KQ too

I dont think he is doing this THAT wide either. I probably should have called, I didn"t.

This is possibly as I have been taking a bit of a pasting for the last week, which is in reality crap on my part as it is me deviating from doing what is right!!

I doubt the reshove over the AQ is ATC (although it probably should be) but players are reshoving wide enough to make AQ very profitable to call.

Totally and utterly demoralised with these at the minute, roll is down to $260 from its height of $420.

Its just totally brutal. Am trying my best to keep morale up, but its ****ing difficult at the minute

Had a bit of a session tonight, with the added bonus of Rodders watching over team viewer.

Just booked a 3rd place, which really could/should have been a 1st, i went to final table 7/9 and jsut bossed it from there! Lost a few huge flips late on and busted in 3rd.

Got one left on the go where i am 11/18 so will see how that goes!

Been really good having Steve sweating the session, he knows far more about poker and the maths of things than I do, so its reassuring to have him in the back ground telliong me i am doing the right things!

All in all, feel liek i have played really really good solid poker, and lost alot of flips and some pots in ways that just made us laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation really!

Am sure Steve will be along to post his thoughts later on, be interesting to see his thoughts on things!!

Hows this going.

It"s going, going ..........

:)

Actually forgot to update this. We basically screwed up by taking too many shots at stuff and ended the stake with a bit of a loss. Didn"t really take it seriously enough tbh but no major damage done to either side. Load of swings in these things of course so might restart it when we all get back from Vegas.

Your input would be most welcome on these games as well. Did you see the video I posted? What feedback would you give?

It all went a bit to **** at the end, bit disappointed with how it went.

Would love another go at it if Rodders is game though.
