Title: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: MintTrav on September 16, 2013, 13:18:17 PM
John Murray, playing as MintTrav on Stars.

I am seeking 50% staking in the WCOOP for the following games:

16/09 Stud $300 + $20
16/09 Stud $200 + $15 Second Chance
17/09 Badugi $300 + $20
18/09 8-Game $300 + $20
19/09 2-7 Triple Draw $300 + $20
21/09 HORSE $300 + $20
24/09 Razz $500 + $30
24/09 Razz $300 + $20 Second Chance

Total $2,665

A mark-up of 12.6% gives a total cost of $3,000, so 10% is $300, 5% is $150, 1% is $30, etc.

In the last year, I have had these cashes:

WCOOP
Razz - 8/387
Stud - 44/381

SCOOP L
Razz - 11/2192
8-Game - 74/2780
PLO Hi-Lo - 20/3719

SCOOP M
Stud - 47/326

FTOPS
Razz - 22/221

TCOOP
Stud - 29/2407

Also some minor cashes in NLHE & PLO SCOOP, but they aren"t so relevant for this.

I have also previously made a SCOOP M FT in Badugi.

I have included the 2nd Chance events only for Razz and Stud, as those are where I have had my best results, making the Razz FT in last year"s WCOOP and just missing it in the SCOOP.

The stories of the SCOOP Badugi and WCOOP Razz final tables as they happened are here http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=5926.90 and here http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=11942.0

I believe my edge in limit games is more than that, but I"ve kept it down. It"s not actually a big mark-up if you look at other forums.

Anyway, I have seen staking threads on here with far bigger mark-ups than that, including several where the player was putting up nothing himself.

How much will I put you down for?

1.125 is excellent value for John imo.

If I wasn"t so short-rolled I would takes lumps of this!

I'm interested in what you think of the general skill level of the field of these types of tournaments John.

They always strike me as being niche games that are populated with regs. Do you think there are a lot of novices as well?

I"m sure John will respond, however I have thoughts on these mixed game tournaments.... yes they generally have a lot of decent mixed game specialist regs entered, but they also have a significant volume of Holdem players looking to expand, and that tends to soften the field somewhat.   No matter how good those Holdem players are, if they don"t have experience of mixed games, they are generally the fish at the tables.

Stud
310 runners (reg still open)

Two hours in. I wish this break had come a bit sooner. Fifteen minutes ago I was 36th. Had a couple of wrecks and now I"m 200/253.

Stud Second Chance is about to start, but there are only 13 players registered. Thinking of swerve it if it doesn"t pick up during the late reg.

3rd Break - total registered 390. Currently 185/230. E. Katchalov on my right with lots of chips. What could be better?
Title: Re: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: MintTrav on September 16, 2013, 23:00:23 PM
Well, it"s over, which is as much as can be said for it. Lost loads with QQ in the hole against AA in his hole and never recovered. I needed to get my chips in after that, but picked up a succession of unplayable hands and couldn"t call against multiple bets before me. I hated letting my stack dwindle but I got put out of my misery eventually.

165/390, though it should have been a few places earlier if I had got the chips in.

There were only 37 runners in the Second Chance by the end of the Late Reg, so I couldn"t see any point in playing it. I"ll refund proportionately.

Badugi
1st break - 182 runners so far.
Current position 16/156.

I had one hand where I potted a dealt J-high Badugi and got raised. The other guy stood pat. I broke my Badugi and drew a Q of the same suit for a worse made hand. I know that players can sometimes go mental with high Badugis but it"s unlikely his was K-high. I didn"t fancy drawing for a lot of chips, so I folded.

Caught a nice 5-high Badugi in the last hand before the break. 3-way to the end, with Marcel Luske also standing pat. I tried to get him to call a 600 bet into a pot of over 2000, but he was too good to fall for that and folded eventually. I guess the 600 looks like it wants to be called, so maybe I should have blasted the pot, but that probably makes it easier for him to get away.

And I double him up, my dealt Badugi losing to his drawn one. He was drawing very strong though, as he ended up with A234.

Gosh, that man sure likes to draw. And doesn"t mind paying for them. He"s done it quite a few times.
Title: Re: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: MintTrav on September 17, 2013, 20:59:32 PM
2nd break - 232 entrants so far (it"s open for another hour if you fancy taking a shot)

Current position 22/159.

Had one very nice hand and someone got stacked.
Title: Re: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: MintTrav on September 17, 2013, 22:03:11 PM
59/150; 279 runners in the end

Got involved in a big hand 3-way against FTOPS winner jimbomber and MicroMillions winner dev209 - not such a good idea, which cost me chips. I made a 9-8 Badugi and called a reraise from jimbomber. We both stood pat and I folded on the next street. Obviously, if I was going to fold eventually, I should have just folded straight away, so that was a mistake. He told me he had an 8-high, which was prob true. I told him it was better than mine, but not how big a hand I had passed, in case they all highlight a weak spot.
Title: Re: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: MintTrav on September 17, 2013, 22:22:08 PM
I don"t know if this was a good call or a terrible one, probably terrible. I could have been paying off with a very dodgy hand but it seemed such an obvious spot for him to be bluffing. Considering who it was, he is obviously capable of a bluff, which it was. Fold?

Agree with John here but there is nothing wrong with asking the question. John gave a good answer and stats to back it up in this case so markup represents good value. This is not always the case with staking threads and potential backers have every right to ask questions and I would like to see more of it personally.

Anyway good luck with this to everybody definitively a +EV offer

Totally agree with this. I think stakers should be questioning more than we have seen and I have no problem with Stu querying the mark-up.

One thing I meant to say to him was that you need to look at the likely return rather than the cost. This is my 4th staking thread (3 here, 1 on Blonde), mostly for WCOOP/SCOOP Stud & Draw, and I have given a return every time, so I would justify it by saying that the probability of you getting a return is higher than on a standard NLHE stake. If I put up a stake request for Holdem, I won"t be adding a mark-up of that amount. However, when Dan Owston put up a Holdem staking thread at 1.3, I was happy to snap it up because of his history of big results in that format.

My question was because I didn"t understand that 12 basically meant 1.2. That is obscene value for a man of John"s skills in these tournies, as he is proving already.

Gutted I couldn"t take any!!

Congrats on the 22nd place

Not like most people I have played Badugi before but only at a low limit, if i remember right stars has a low limit badugi game every night at 20:20 which is only a $2.20FL game but a good place to learn the game if you can stick it out on limit game.I have played it a handful of time and my best result in it was 2nd(152) $49.00 but this was back in Jan 09

Good Luck for the rest of the games and just wondering why people havent snapped up the rest of the 9.5% left. Are you adjusting the stake after every time a game is complete or is this not going to be harder to work out what everyone is getting action on or not?

If anyone wants to buy some of the remainder at any point, it will just be a case of dividing the remaining buy-ins by the original total. At present, the remaining buy-ins are $1,810, so 2665/1810 x 3000 = $2,037.52. 1% is $20.38.

My question was because I didn"t understand that 12 basically meant 1.2.

1.12 actually. You in for $20.38?

...potential backers have every right to ask questions and I would like to see more of it personally.

As a backer so would I but we were specifically asked not to post queries or question terms on the thread of the stake. This has lead to me ignoring stakes that I might otherwise get involved with.

People seem to be a bit too precious about their terms. If someone wants my money I have a right to query the terms but as I said it is discouraged so I either buy or don"t buy. Seems to work for most.

I"ve been toying with the idea of starting a backers thread but I can see it turning into a bun fight so haven"t bothered.
Title: Re: WCOOP - Razz, Stud, etc
Post by: Chipaccrual on September 18, 2013, 15:01:56 PM
Didn"t realise we couldn"t ask questions.

I have in the past and I"ve also counter-offered a stake request previously by saying I would take the lot at spot (which the stakee agreed to).

It"s a shame if people are put off from getting involved due to not feeling they can ask questions.  As Andrew quite rightly states, if they want your money, you have the right to ask questions about the terms.

There have been a number of requests on here that haven"t sold out.  I think most of us know the likely reasons why, but I think a thread to be able to air those views wouldn"t be a bad thing.  (Assuming it doesn"t turn into a bun fight with people getting precious about their terms).

John is it possible to get 2.5% of the last 3 please?

21/09 HORSE $300 + $20
24/09 Razz $500 + $30
24/09 Razz $300 + $20 Second Chance

So total buyin is $1170 * 1.12 = $1310.40 / 100 = $13.11 *2.5 = $32.76?

So I get 2.5% for $32.76, if so and you still have some left could I reserve 2.5% of the above 3 tournaments. Would have taken the one this evening as well but will not get the chance to check the forum between now and tonight to see if it is OK so would not be able to send before the start.

Posts I have saved for you from earlier, when the APAT server was having a nice sleep tucked up with Phil:

2-7 Triple-Draw
37/267 at 1st break.

It has been pretty mental. One hyper-aggressive player on my table, a couple of decent players and a couple of passive ones, but I"ve run well enough so far. Got to 4th at one point, but I felt a bit dizzy and came back down a bit. I"m surprised to see how many places I dropped in the two hands I lost before the break, but happy so far.

This is going to get very swingy soon, so I could get chipped up or busted quite early.

2nd break, 340 entries now.

And I"m.............. 255/275. Gruesome session. Been playing fast - hardly lost a hand in the first hour and hardly won one in the second. Unfortunately, I had lots of cracking starting hands, with plenty of chips going in along the way, but they wouldn"t convert. 4-card hands are no good. Clearly, this session will be decisive.

It"s over. Crazy tournament. I played it high-variance, reraising with some monster draws rather than flatting (and then missing) and betting some missed draws where they had made a hand good enough to call with. I got caught snowing, which didn"t help to get folds afterwards. It wouldn"t have been a bad thing if I had then made some good hands. Took on the table maniac several times. I wanted to play hands against him on the basis that my selected starting hands must win more than his any-starting-hand strategy. Didn"t work out like that. This one feels like a missed opportunity.

2.5% each booked for Rodders and Myles.

I sold the remaining 9.5% for the final four tournaments yesterday. I hadn"t seen that you two had asked before the two I sold the remainder to. The APAT forum was down when I sold the last bit.

As you two asked first, I think you should get the %.

This means that 55% is sold for the final three tournaments, instead of the 50% originally stated.

I make it $1170 / $2665 x $3000 = $1,317.07 x 2.5% = $32.93. That keeps the price exactly the same as the original buyers got. It"s not me, you see - it"s them.

Out. Lost plenty when it was folded to me in PLO Hi-Lo and I raised from the Button with AK27. SB reraised (with AA34). Got a low draw, with a possible scoop, but missed. The rest went soon after.

Not much more to say about it. Strangely, every player from my starting table is now out.

Razz

Currently 133/290. Two hours in and I"ve been up and down. Haven"t ever been below average, but I was up to 20th, then back in the pack, then hit 14th, then back down. Not sure there was much I could do about the ones I lost - Razz can be quite swingy.

FFS, this is ridiculous. Started with the best hand and got chips in way ahead on 3rd and 4th five times and bricked out with pictures while they picked up low cards every time. I don"t mind being outdrawn my fair share, but this has been every time.

3rd break - closed at 343 runners. Now 137/295.

Second Chance - just 66 runners. Currently 55/66, though that is only 1300 chips below the starting stack of 7500, so we"re not in as bad shape as the position suggests. Lost chips mainly due to this hand. Some people just don"t know what is a good hand and what they should be dumping, but sometimes they get there:

aDrENalin710 did win two events in this year"s SCOOP, the 2-7 Triple Draw M and the HORSE H, so maybe he should get the benefit of the doubt, though I"m still not impressed with how he played that hand.

Main - 162/201

2C - 51/53

Got to the heights of 23rd in the 2C and then played a big pot for someone else"s life, that would have put me 15th if I won it, but I dropped to 45th instead and then lost a bit more.

I"m tired of being outdrawn. Gonna play live for the rest of the week.

- Won pots in both - 69/184 and 38/45. Not that stunning, but better than we were.

- Now 62/167 and 18/35!

- 44/148 and 15/22. It"s getting close in the 2C - 12 get paid.

- Won a pot against Chad Brown. 38/134 and 16/17. It"s not over in the 2C tho - I have 12k and 12th is on 21k.

5th break - 66/108 in the Main.

I was 44/92 a few minutes ago, but lost a lot with 34A6. Paired the 4 and 6 and ended up with K-high. Down to 67/87.

48 paid.

Had to race for my life but hand held up for once. 57/72.

6th break. 57/65 - it"s looking like another painful ending.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the stake.

We won $837 in the Badugi and didn"t play the Stud Second Chance for $215, making a total of $1,052 to distribute. I wish we had more to return. We had some opportunities - Razz was close and 2-7 was probably the one that got away, but these games are high-variance. Returns are:

Brian   2.5%   $  26.30
Phil     5%   $  52.60
Mark     1%   $  10.52
Sean     1%   $  10.52
Other Forum     27%  $284.04
Sold Privately     4%   $  42.08

Everyone should have received their payments.

Thanks again.
