Title: 2014 Virgin London Marathon
Post by: TGBane on November 16, 2013, 00:50:21 AM
Hey all, most of you know me as the fat ginger that gets lucky and takes most of your chips, I can live with that.
Others as Bane from Team Gotham!
I am hoping to change that and just be the ginger that gets lucky and takes most of your chips.
I have been giving a chance to fulfil a dream and run in the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon.
I have been given a place by www.action.org.uk please visit their website to see the incredible work that they do as my words will not do them justice.
Obviously this blog is primarily to raise money for Action, I truly believe that they are a worthy cause.
My just giving page is http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/DwayneStacey both I and Action would be extremely grateful for any donations.
I used to be reasonably fit but after finding poker things slowly deteriorated, this how I used to look below.
And what happened after finding poker again below.
I started out 7 weeks ago at 18st and had not exercised for 4 months what so ever, prior to that I played 5 aside football once a week for previous year.
After a few ups and downs I have lost 2st 2lbs and am below 16st for the first time in over 8 years.
I have gone from zero to 8km and on sunday I am aiming for 10km.
I have a facebook group with updates form day one https://www.facebook.com/groups/444570462329949/
I have been told that I have inspired some to also get of their arses and to try to get back the fitness that they once had, this is incredible to hear and I hope that I can inspire more.
By the time I play the worlds I would have ran the marathon in under 4 hrs and be under 14st.
I am hoping to play an APAT prior but with the amount of training ahead of me I am not sure.
I have only been able to play a small amount online, I have started playing the $30 18 mans, unlike the MTTs I have ran ridiculously good, wednesday night I play 2, won 1 and cashed in 4th for the other, last night I played 4, won 3 and finished 2nd in the other, tonight I ran awful, played 3 and only won 1 :)
Thank you for your time in reading this, if you got this far.

So as well as I have ran in sngs over the last few days tonight was 10x the opposite.
I am so glad I have all this training ahead of me to keep me from the pain of playing online.

Spent all day sunday nervous for my first 10k albeit a training run it is still 2k further than I have ran before and then that included warming up and cooling down.
The first 3 miles went pretty well and then a few slight niggles.
I had spent an hr on friday planning an exact route, yes I forgot so made it up as I went.
At 4.5m I was struggling after a long hill climb, and could have either taken the short route home or continued along the vaguely remembered route, (I am no quitter).
That is the problem of living at the top of town, I get to run down hill but it means that I also have to run back up it and at the end of my run when tired.
I really must look for a flatter course to run.
I managed to finish the 10k in just under an hr, I do not have an exact time as my watch says that it was 1.00.15 but I had ran 10,060m need to get this glitch sorted.
I have gone from zero to 10k in less than 2 months, for me it is an incredible achievement but it is not even a 1/4 of the marathon distance.
I know that I have so much hard work ahead of me but I know that I will do it, no matter how tough it gets.

The very best of luck with this.

+1. Having staggered round a few half marathons myself the thought of turning round at the end and doing it again?  :"( All the very best of luck Dwayne, sounds like you"re making excellent progress so far. Keep it going.

Best of luck with this Dwayne.  I ran my first marathon last September, from a base of zero fitness 12 months beforehand.  At the time I lined up to start, I was really bricking it as I had got lazy on the training and the furthest I"d run up to that point was a half marathon, once, 4 months previously, and nothing further than sporadic 10ks in between.  I still got it finished though, faster than I thought I would, and I"m a firm believer that if you have the fitness to run 10k then everything else you need to get you round the marathon is in your mind.

Having said "never again", I applied for London next year and didn"t get in, but am now running the Paris Marathon the week before.  Training should be starting around now, and I"m entered into a 10k this Sunday, but haven"t run further than 5k since, I think, that last marathon.

Will be following with interest!

Just spotted that you"re aiming for under 4 hours - you"ll need to be a bit more disciplined with your training than me then :D

Dann, Im going to find it hard enough in lightweight running gear let alone a full blown Bane get up, I apologise for any disappointment caused.
Im sure I will find a way to make it up to you :)

Thank you Phil.
Half marathon distance is still 6 weeks away, currently dreading sundays 7.2miler but with the support that I have and am getting I know that I will get it done.

Thank you Claw.
Congratulations, thats an awesome achievement.
It is a shame about your training, at least you know this time exactly what is required.
Paris will be a beautiful course, they say that you need another challenge after the marathon you are running so was looking at Boston but Paris seems like a great choice.
Best of luck and please update here how your journey is going.

So monday was my rest day, kind of needed it after sundays run and the fact its a 4.20 leave for work.
Tuesday I hit the gym for what was supposed, according to my zero to marathon schedule a 35mins jog, I am aiming for a 4hr marathon (ambitious but) so I am trying to stay a little ahead, this also allows for injuries or with this marvellous weather coming man flu.
I completed my 45mins tallying up 7.2k, its just incredible how easy I can run 5k, you should see the smile on my face when it rolls over, must be like hey, look at the demented guy on the treadmill.
Wed was pretty much rinse and repeat except I pushed it a little harder for the last 10mins, I struggled but there is no give up in me and clocked up 7.5k.
Day of rest today but tomorrow is a planned 20 min fartlek, I am planning a 5k and aiming for big PB.......not sure what to say, 25mins would be awesome but seeing as it is currently 28.42 and only set 4 days ago I think that is too much although is was part of the 10k but I am looking at a flatter course so why not lets aim for 25mins.
Saturday is another day of rest before sundays long run, 7.2m (11.6k)
I got home from work and was nearly brought to tears, my daughter is just incredible and my pride for her is immeasurable.
In my wifes words.
Has the sweetest 2 year old sometimes! We were chatting about Daddy running a big race to raise pennies for poorly children when she turned and said to me "I have pennies in my purse to give Daddy for the poorly children" So when he got home she handed him a £5 note and said "for the poorly children" Love our girl! Sunday, the long run.
Felt pretty poo all day and as the time got nearer the more nervous I got, after fridays semi fail I really did not want to fail again and 7.2m is a long way (right now).
Got my ankle supports out and my knee support as that has been playing up, dug out a trackie top as its ruddy cold out there, put my heart rate monitor on my running watch and then set my phone in my running belt with the music on.
I planned the route last night so knew exactly where I was going.
What I had not planned was the continuous rudy hills, yes I got to run down a few but I had the same amount to run up.
I managed to keep a reasonable pace between 9 and 10 min miles.
The run went really well and I even managed to inject some pace into the last mile and a half.
I managed to run the 7.2 miles in 1hr9mins4secs including a pb 10k of 59.42.
I felt great after the run and it was a great confidence booster and Im now really looking forward to next weeks 8miler, a little sadistic I guess.
I have a mixed week ahead with work, got a couple days off and then travelling for the rest of the week which will be a test to get to the gym but I will manage somehow.
Due to tomorrow off I though it a good time to grind a sunday evening and with the micro millions main event and special storm it would be a great night to make some money.
FAIL!
BIG $11, KK < AA.
Micro MIllions Main $22, 22 v JJ v Kd7d, flop 2dQdTs, turn Jc, all allin and d river.
Micro Millions Storm $11, 77 v 99 all in on 79Q flop, came back to get it in with flush draw v KT on T high flop, I led they raised and I shipped 3x their bet, they snap it off lmao.
Hotter $55 QQ v JK.
Bigger $55 KQ v 44, they turned set.
Such a disappointing evening, flopped 6 sets, lost 4 and no action on other 2.
Hyper hu ko, 3rd round flop top pair v AA yawn.
Back to concentrating just on running and put this poker malarky on the back boiler until the teams.

Most definitely sticking to the running now.

Had a couple days off of work and my eating has not been too good and really needed to get to the gym today, Im trying to hit the gym twice a week and road twice a week to help ease the impact on my knees and ankles.
Yesterday I went for a nice but very cold walk down to the beach with my family, was a long way so had to keep carrying my daughter up, when I got home something had been pulled inside my chest and almost every movement was agony, this morning it had cleared slightly, I was determined to just run through it in the hope that it would loosen up.
I have set up a 2nd gym membership in southampton and was planning on getting in and out before the rush hour.
Unfortunately a short trip into town for some shopping took longer than planned and that put that plan to waste.
A quick call to the baby sitter (my mummy) and all was sorted for a later visit.
I have purchased a few running accessories to help stave off injuries and keep me training.
The compression sleeves for my calves arrived today so todays dress routine was as follows:
new running shorts
new compression sleeves, felt good albeit a little tight (I was on the lower end of the measurement chart) my calves have caused me the most pain after a run so persisted.
knee brace
ankles braces
new running socks
trainers
top
what a site I must have been but I do not care there are more important things than how I look.
got to the new gym and it was a fair size, 3 different areas of treadmills, all facing white walls, as if treadmills are not boring enough, you get to stare at a blank wall for the duration.
There was the odd tv dotted around but not at the right height to retain a correct running posture.
From the very first step I was in pain, I pushed on in the hope that it would ease........nope......pretty much hell for the whole 62min session.
I managed 50mins running and hit 5miles (8km)
tomorrow the same is planned except for the compression sleves, I am going to wash them and use them for the recovery if my calves hurt, funny, that made me just realise that my calves are currently not hurting  still not wearing them again while running though.
Thank you for reading and see you tomorrow.

Have been feeling pretty poo all week and it took me 20mins to get off of the sofa tonight to get myself to the gym.
My legs felt heavy but better than when I ran on tuesday.
Due to having the calories burnt instead of speed I did not know how fast I was running until I noticed that the figures did not quite match up.
I had added 0.2kph, it may not seem a lot but my legs say otherwise
50mins and 5.06miles
Depending on what time I get home from work tomorrow it will either be another trip to the gym for a fartleck session or hit the road for another 5k pb attempt.

Due to work plans I changed my fridays session to a long run today.
I spent time last night planning the route around Romsey before changing my mind and thought that last weeks hills were not that bad.
Idiot Idiot Idiot, today they were hell, I made it through 5 miles ok but then it went south and and my calfs and knees screamed at me for the rest of it.
Theres no quit in me now so head down and plough on through.
Managed 8.65miles, it took me a little longer than I had hoped but I still did it.
Somehow, even with my bad eating this week I managed to lose 4 lbs, down to 15st 8lbs.
Hoping I can keep this up now, looking to drop the 8lbs in the next 2 weeks, going to be tough but it is achievable.

Currently up in sunny Aberdeen.
Had arranged a local membership for PureGym only to end up with digs 25miles away.
I did managed to get super lucky though and have managed to find a gym 1 mile away.
I hit the gym tues and managed an hr and 6 miles, I think I am going to stick to hrs now and try to slowly up my speed during the week.
Tonight again it was an hr and 6 miles.
Actually feel quite good.
My diet has taken a bit of a battering with no cooking facilities in the digs so hard to control my calorie intake but with it being sooooooo cold and increasing my length of run I am hoping I have still managed to lose something.

I made a small mistake on my last post and am in fact still at 15st 8lbs.
Made it to the gym last night for a 6 mile run, currently at 6mph so an hr.
Am wanting to raise the speed a little bit but not been feeling great of late.
I had a 15min wait for a treadmill as there are only 3 in the gym.
I made it to 5.3miles and then the treadmill switched off and stopped, jarring my knee in the process, I jumped onto a free one next to me to continue but my knee did not want to so I had a longer warm down.
When I got off a lady asked if I was knackered after running for that long, apart from my legs I feel fine, in fact I felt great.
Tonight I went again and again had to wait, looked like 20mins but luckily someone stopped early so only 10.
I completed the hr long 6 miles and again felt great bar both knees a little sore.
Home tomorrow after 12 days away, really looking forward to seeing my girls.
Friday is another 5k pb attempt, I WILL DO IT!
Thank you for following me.

Had a pretty incredible weekend.
Friday 13th marked 13years with my beautiful wife (so she tells me).
So I made the 5k attempt on Saturday, smashed my old pb by over 2m30s and completed it in 25m59s
Today I flew back up to Aberdeen for the week.
Sunday is long run day so dreading 10miles on a treadmill but I completed it in 1hr40mins.
Knees are sore as hell, hoping they clear ready for work tomorrow.
Still a very very long way to go but 18 weeks to get there.

Still not feeling 100%
Diet has slipped again and the weather (45mph winds and cold) have pretty much totally drained me.
Tuesday"s 6 miles was not too bad but tonight I felt like I was running on empty from 8 mins in, I still finished but that was mentally tough.
I know that these tough days are needed as it"s more than just fitness and endurance that I need.
Work has been pretty awesome, although we have been let down by a couple of deliveries and the we have had to endure a couple of storms we have battled on and are right on top of things ready to board our freedom bird home tomorrow for a well deserved 2 weeks with my girls.
Going to try to shave a few more seconds from my 5k pb on Saturday and then an 11 miler Sunday.
Have a great weekend and see you next week.
Title: Re: 2014 Virgin London Marathon
Post by: TGBane on December 23, 2013, 00:38:55 AM
Got home Friday a little more tired than I thought so decided on leaving the 5k til Saturday.
Then Saturday did not go to plan, the weather was also awful but not an excuse I am going to use very often as I can always go to a gym but seeing as I had an 11 miler to do today I decided it best to save my legs for that.
Had a Christmas party to go to last night and got back pretty late.
A lay in this morning before helping to get my daughter packed ready for a day at Nan"s followed by collecting main Christmas present from Grandad"s and there was no time to plan my route for today.
I finally got going at 14.30 and felt really fresh for the first 3 miles then at 6 miles a few niggles kicked in but still felt good.
I was making the route up as I went so that I did not have to run past my house to add any extra distance on to make up the 11 miles.
I really wanted to do 12 miles today and up until 9.5 miles thought that I would but then my legs began to say no, get the hell off of me fat boy.
The last 1.5 miles were more staggered than ran but I still managed to complete the 11 miles in 1hr 47 mins.
Ended up with 2 extremely sore knees which touch wood are felling much better now and a day of rest should be enough before I hit the gym on Christmas Eve for a 6 miler.
Also a bleeding nipple, looks like its time to get the Vaseline out.
This running marlarky is so glamorous.
Oh and for the first time in 3 weeks I have lost weight, 4 lbs so down to 15st 4lbs.
Would really like to ge below 15st for the new year.
Merry Christmas all and a happy new year.
Title: Re: 2014 Virgin London Marathon
Post by: TGBane on January 07, 2014, 22:50:11 PM
We"ll I never made it below 15st for the new year, I in fact put weight on and at one point was up to 15st11lbs.
I attempted a 12mile road run but my knees were so sore from 8miles on that every step was agony and I finally gave in at 9.5miles.
I decided to give my knees a rest and change tact a little and just hit the gym harder.
I changed from 6 miles in an hr to 10km (6.21miles) runs, stepping it up to lower my times.
I have managed to get from 6mph to 7mph and knocked 6 mins off of my best time in little over a week.

Took another minute off of my pb :)
10km in 53m25s.
Was pretty hard from 4km onwards and had to dig deep.
Going to put another couple of these in this week before the long run on Sunday.
Going for 13.2m on a treadmill, mmmm should be exciting.
Now Christmas and the new year are in the distant past my charity www.action.org.uk (please take a minute to look at the incredible work they do) and I would really really appreciate any donations that you could afford, even £1s add up www.virginmoneygiving.com/DwayneStacey please tick the gift aid box so that Action can claim another 25% direct from the government.

Hit the gym after 12 days off with a cold.
It did not go well.
Managed to jog/walk 6k in just under 37 mins, highly disappointed and shocked at how far I had been knocked back.
The following day I tried again, it did not go much better but I dug deep and managed to complete 10k in just under an hr 4 mins, pleased that I completed the 10k at least but over 10mins slower than 2 weeks previously.
thursday I hit the gym for the 3rd day running and although again I had to intersperse come walking I did manage to complete the 10k in 58mins.
Friday is a rest day and I took yesterday as a rest day too so that I could be a little fresher for the gym today.
I was hoping to complete a 1/2 marathon today but knew that was probably aiming too high so 12miles would be an incredible achievement with how the week has gone.

Had an incredible visit to the gym today.
Smashing / adding records for fun.
Longest run on a tread mill (was 9 miles)
Longest run ever (was 11 miles)
First ever half marathon 13.2 miles in 2 hrs 12 mins.
new longest run ever 15 miles in 2 hrs 30 mins.
the last 4 miles were hell but no way was I giving in after running so far.
Am paying for it a bit now but have my recovery tights on and sat watching Doc McStuffins with my daughter, life is good.
Please remember that I am doing all this for such a worthy cause www.action.org.uk.
Please donate at
www.virginmoneygiving.com/DwayneStacey
If you are able to donate then please remember to to check the gift aid box so that My charity can also claim 25% back directly from the government.
One last thing, can you please share.
I lied, theres more......
I forgot to say that I had 2 goals for this month, run 15 miles.....check and to be below 15st.....I have lost 7 lbs this week and weigh in at 15st 2lbs, just 3 lbs to get me below 15st for the first time in umpteen years, that will also take my weight loss to over 3st in 4 moths.
11 weeks to the big day.
On the poker front, I can not wait to get to Stoke next week for the Team Championships, I have not played for too long so am expecting to be a bit rusty.

Had an incredible weekend in Stoke with the TeamInTheMuck crew.
Poker went pretty much as bad as it could have but with constant laughter when away from the tables poker was quickly forgotten.
Back to work and back to the gym was hard to do but needs must.
I managed to actually run 2 10kms on tues and wed even though I had to slow my usual pace down to get them done in 59 mins and 57"30"
Thursday I decided to change things a bit and went hard at a 5km, I knocked 90 secs off of my pb and finished in 25mins flat.
I have been suffering with knee pains on my long runs and again I was set back by these ruddy pains.
They hit hard after having to reset the running machine for the 2nd time (theres an hr limit) so I was only able to complete 12 miles.
I had analysis of my running completed yesterday and it seems as though it could be a simple footwear problem, the new trainers are on their way but until they arrive I will have to persevere with what I have.
The positives from today were that I ran 12 miles.
Tried out some energy gels (pretty disgusting) and did not throw up.
The biggest positive is that I now weigh 14st 13lbs, total loss of 3st 1lb.

I have changed my training plan and diet, I am now eating more to give my body more fuel to hopefully improve my training but with my sore knees and the food poisoning I only trained once this week so when I stood on the scales last night I was a little disappointed to see 15st 9lbs, a 10lb increase in 5 days. Last night I had to miss a friends 50th birthday celebrations as my daughter may have chicken pox and also to prepare for todays Winchester 10km, my first ever road race.
I finished 260th from 478 starters in 51min 40secs.
It was great experience running with almost 500 others.
Due to flooded road closures the route was changed last night and we had to hit some painful hills but this served as a great training run as everything is geared towards the London Martahon in 7 weeks time.
Really really pleased with how it went as I was able to keep a pretty constant pace right through and managed a short sprint over the last 500m overtaking a few more people.
I gave my all today and touch wood have come out of it pretty well, no knee pain and legs feel great, the only pain I have is my feet are very sore, maybe due to over tightened trainers.
Just 7 weeks is insane, so glad that today went so well as I really need to get some huge miles in my legs now.
Please take 1 minute to look at my charity"s home page to see what an incredible cause I am running for:

Please spare what you can and donate at my page:

And lastly please share.

After last weeks exertions in the Winchester 10k my legs were a little sore and stiff on the monday, to try to loosen them up I hit the gym for a gentle 5km (30mins).
On tuesday I hit the gym again but did not want to run so did a fitness test on a cross trainer which came back as well above average, sweeeeet.
Wednesday was a rest day but with the amount of walking and carrying of steel I do at work it really is anything of the sort.
Thursday after another hard day at work with a headache all day I was going to miss the gym but after hearing about the usual Bristol traffic debacle I decided to head to to the gym to see if I would feel better once I got there.
I parked up and after napping on and off for 45mins, still a headache so headed back to digs.
Friday I arrive home to a germ filled house with 2 poorly girls
My saturday morning run was put back due to a grizzling daughter and a poorly wife but I did manage to get out early afternoon which worked out well due to the weather warming up.
This running thing really is not getting easier, not even a little.
I hit my planned 8 miles in an hr and 15 mins.
I was fine till 5.5m but then my quads started to get painful and the last mile was hideously hard but I finished.
Hoping that Im not too sore to do it all over again tomorrow.

Hello all,

Its been some time since the last update.

Training has been going pretty well but the diet has been indifferent.

I have ran in a few road races to help the training as its so boring running on your own and they have helped so much.

I ran the Winchester 10km in a personal best of 51 mins 40 secs.

The Salisbury 10 miles in an 1 hr 28 mins.

Then the Cranleigh 15/21 where I was hoping for the 21 miles but rough country roads and a bitch of a hill after 13.5 miles put paid to that idea and I completed the 15.1 miles in 2 hrs 20 mins including a half marathon on 2hrs 39 secs.

Last week was the Eastleigh 10km and a new pb of 49 mins and 39 secs.

It is now only 16 days to the big one and I am feeling confident, the next 2 weeks will be tapering down a bit to be as fresh as I can be on the day.

So far I have raised £580 towards my £2500 target for www.action.org.uk and need all the help you can offer at www.virginmoneygiving.com/dwaynestacey

Thank you for anything you can spare.

Could you please let your friends know about this as well as Action are doing such good work.

omw! 6 days to go.
Actually very excited now, just need to get the next 2 days of work out of the way and then I can really start to get fully ready.
Headed to Eton Dorney on saturday for a 20km race, finished in an hr and 46 mins which I was very pleased with seeing as last week I was full of cold and could not train, still felt rough saturday morning but got it done.
Was very sore today as it was my 2nd longest road run.
Heading to gym tomorrow for last time before sunday for an easy 5km then its carb loading mmmmmmm doughnuts.
Running total now at £850 so thank you to all that have donated so far, for those that have not, please go to www.virginmoneygiving.com/dwaynestacey to read through my journey so far and for a link to my charity www.action.org.uk to see what a worthwhile cause I am putting myself through all this pain for.
Thank you
