Welcome to Day 4 of the APAT World Championships of Amateur Poker held at Aspers Casino, Stratford, London
Today sees our first "pure" Hold "em event, our Event #7 the No Limit Hold'em Championship and, later today, Event #8 Mixed Game Championship (round of each NLHE/PLO).
IrishTom is your APAT Host and I will be adding my "monkey at a laptop" services to provide updates during the day.
-
Event #7 is off an running and features has a capacity 180 runners with a 10k Stack and 30 Minute Levels.
Players are still registering and there"s a good chance this will reach full strength.
Late registration for 90 minutes.
-
As a reminder
To enter Aspers Casino and play poker you must join as a member and photo ID is required - to register for a poker event, then you must provide your membership card to the poker room cash desk to have it swiped.
To register "on the day" at the casino will take just short of 10 minutes for the reception to complete the process - therefore WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND that ALL new members complete the process via the Aspers Website in advance of arrival - then on arrival it should take no more than 30 seconds once you have shown your photo ID.
You need to ensure you allow enough time to enter Aspers, and join as a member, and then get to the poker room to have your card swiped and to register you into the event - BEFORE THE EVENT START TIME.

We currently have 128 runners and players are still trickling in....will we see the cap reached?
Opinions...over or under?

Be great to see it reach the cap. Hope you"re all having a ball down there. Snowing up here today #grimupnorth wishing I was there. Hows the hamsters been Paulie? Behaving themselves? x

We"re creeping up...now at 143 and they"re still coming in dribs and drabs.
Weather is better today than it has been for the past few days....windy last night and again this morning so it"s keeping the clouds off.
Hamsters behaving today but the Aspers wifi is spotty and tends to get overworked especially when Tom is uploading the photos.
Fortunately, I bring my own wifi so I tend to use that as my primary resource.
-
End of Level 2...on to Level 3 at 75/150.
Now 145 runners with just under 30 minutes for late registration.
-
#7 NLHE with 158 players...
-
As Tom mentioned, Late Registration is now closed and we maxed out at 158 which is excellent for a noon event on working Tuesday.
Level 4 has now started at 100/200 with a break at the end of this level.
-
Despite the large starting stack we"ve already had more than a few bust-outs.
134 left from 158 after 3 levels.
-
-
Due to traffic I was late getting to the update desk and missed out on eating beforehand.
We"re spoiled for choices here at Westfield (http://uk.westfield.com/london/directory/search/dining/?category=2035)...not sure what I"m in the mood for.
What do you recommend?
-
Pizza from Franco Manca everytime...

Pizza from Franco Manca everytime...
Thanks Brookie...I was thinking Pizza in the back of my mind.
Anyone else want to offer recommendations.
-
Monkeys eat bananas...
-
Monkeys eat bananas...
Belgians eat fries with mayonnaise....and that"s just plain disgusting.
-
Players are now on a 25 minute break.
When they come back the antes will kick in at 100/200/25.
127 left right now.
-
Yo sushi is good not just sushi but curries as well.
-
OK players are back...I"m off for some nosh.
-
Monkeys eat bananas...
Belgians eat fries with mayonnaise....and that"s just plain disgusting.
LOL :) Actually it is very yummie... have you tried it?
-
It"s great to have all the variations of side events, but it"s interesting to see that the biggest number of runners so far is for a NLHE event on a Tuesday afternoon.
Great work guys.
-
Sitting at work 220 odd miles away is a tad annoying..
Enjoy all..

NOT !!!!
grrrrrr
:-)
-
For those of you interested I plumped (heh!) for Pizza Express despite Brookie"s recommendation.
I just prefer to be waited on rather than do the Food Court thing.
An "America"s Hottest" Romana hit the spot (with large Peroni, natch).
Not the hottest despite the name but very nice thin crust.
If I"m not careful, I might get fat. ;D
When I waddle back to Update Central we have 96 players left and we have 5 minutes of Level 6 to go.
Level 7 is 200/400/75.
-

Not as annoying as not having your Dukeness gracing us with his presence...but needs must when the paymaster beckons.
-

Indeed.
I"m sure there are a number of factors at play here.
I know that we missed quite a few players to the Vic on Saturday as they had a 10k guarantee event on and they absolutely smashed it with a prizepool (I understand) of c.80k.
Of course, these variations aren"t seen very often anywhere on a regular basis, certainly not with the deep structures that APAT offers, and so arguably, the deep player pool isn"t there...at least as much as we might hope.
Another thing is, and I know this is a concern to the PTB, APAT doesn"t really have a reliable medium to promote this to the unknowing masses.
The forum caters to it"s existing player / user base. Facebook isn"t really the medium (forget Twitter) and it requires the user to know about APAT already and casinos don"t always promote in house although Aspers did run satellites for Main Event.
It"s a delicate operation and I"m not privy to the behind the scenes goings on...you would probably have more insight than me there Leigh.
It would be nice to find another robust medium to provide these updates in a structured linear fashion above, beyond and in addition to the forum with the same level of detail as I know we like but I haven"t found it yet.
-
Pizza Express despite Brookie"s recommendation.
Not a wise move... Big Club knows his food.

Pizza Express despite Brookie"s recommendation.
Not a wise move... Big Club knows his food.
Not saying it wasn"t a good recommendation, it"s just the Food Court thing I"m not into.
Still, as the saying goes "I"m here all week".
-
Currently we have 86 players left, on Level 6 (300/600/100).
Tom's predicting another midnight finish and I"m not going to argue with him given his current track record.
The Mix Game he"s predicting a 2am close....that"ll probably finish me off good and proper.

Advertising wise, this is where we miss Poker Player, Inside Poker etc - all those magazines they used to give away in the cardrooms etc, they were perfect for advertising to Joe Bloggs who came into the casino for the odd game of poker (which is what I would expect APATs target audience to be).
Sadly, they appear to have all fallen by the wayside.
-
Level 9 starting after a 20 minutes break - 400/ 800 / 100

Things seem to be moving a long quite briskly...maybe I will get an early night after all.
On a side note, I have to say that the Aspers staff have been top notch throughout (although the valets could visit Update Central a little more frequently ;D).
The Dealers, TDs & Poker desk staff have been excellent in providing a great player experience.

Very true. My first awareness of APAT was through one of the poker mags, back in 2007.
-
I can"t help but feel that at the very least having plenty of quality flyers printed up and available in the host casinos for S9 well in advance (and I mean a couple of months) with full details of the upcoming event would be of some benefit.
We can"t always rely on the casinos to promote these things so just having a stack of flyers the staff could hand out and the players could stick in their pocket might be a good idea.
Perhaps we could have the single event details on one side and the full schedule on the reverse.
Whether this makes financial sense for APAT is not really within my scope of knowledge though.

#7 NLHE Championships
Things have slowed down a bit as we approach the end of Level 12 and the players go on 40 minute dinner break.
Level 13 when we come back - 1k / 2k / 300
29 left from 158 - Average: 54,500
#8 Mix Game
A break for these guys too in a couple of minutes as we end Level 4
58 players from 76 (they sneaked a last minute entry in just under the wire).

What do you recommend?
Bacon baguette for £2 over the bridge at Deano"s continental food stand!

Hmm...seems the dealers gave us the stack sizes but we don"t have names..this may take a little longer than we thought.

Chip counts will have to wait 45 minutes.
The TD, quite rightly, doesn"t want to throw in another break quite so soon after they"ve just come back from dinner.
We"ll track exits in the meantime.
EDIT - make that 5 minutes...I love a TD whose accommodating like that.

Anthony Gale exits in 11th for £145.
Sorry missed that one while I was checking seats. The list I got for T1 may have been off a little so I"m checking.
I think I may have gotten Stewart Kirby in Angelo"s seat.

#8 Mixed Game
Level 12
16 left at 800/1600 - Average 47500.

Keith Miller just toook a huge chunk out of Benjamin Naylor with QQ vs A8.
No bullet for Benjamin leaves him with a bowl of rice.
He"s all in for 2 BB next hand but hits a lucky duck ( Qc 2c) to double through Graham Hawkes
-
Blimey..no rest for me.
Benjamin all in again against Nathan"s AK.
Benjamin has QQ and flops a Q.
He"s now up to 100k in the space of 2 hands.
-
I can"t get these down fast enough for me to catch up with the next hand which sees Stewart Kirby doubling through Keith Miller to c.220k.
-
Florian happy to call a shove from Mark Nelson.
Even happier to see his AK dominating Mark"s A9.
The 9 on the flop took the shine off that and Florian slams his remaining chips down in disgust.
Still in it though.
-
Florian all in for an ante
-
Deuce Four no good against a flopped two pair.
Florian departs in 8th place for £270

* following quick chat Chris "is pretty certain" (after the chips have been shipped) that dealer miscounted Balazs chips so clock is paused whilst camera is checked
advised that the "pot is correct" so we re-start the clock
The subsequent chip stacks show that this was in fact not the case.
I would of preferred they had just said they next hand is underway so there is nothing we can do about it, rather than claim to look at the cameras and then to avoid any controversy say "nope its all fine, you def paid the right amount of 82.5k...glossing over the fact that it wasn"t my stack that was incorrectly counted but in fact it was villains...
It actually came to light when villain stated during the following hand he did not have enough chips based upon the statement by the dealer during settling up that i owed 82.5k....
He claimed to be short....
This was because he in fact only had around 60k which i roughly counted prior to making my 3bet which subsequently saw our stacks go in..
We can see that the stacks are wrong based on what he took to the final....which has been posted as 180k
If he had in fact had 82.5k (rather than the 60ish k he did), then his ft stack should be over 200
Hand 1 - (villain utg) 82.5 + (hero utg+1) 82.5 + 2 (sb) + 4(bb) = 171k
Hand 2 - sb completes, (villain bb) wins post flop... + 4k = 175k
Hand 3 - Villain wins my remaining 27.5k b on b... so 175k +27.5k = 202.5k
The ft chip counts show villain has 180k....
Yes i should have said something at the end of the hand so it is my fault as well...but i was a little dazed at getting 3 outed for commanding chip lead pot...
What annoys me is how it was handled by the casino...
