Hi all,
I"ve just completed a server migration from an old slow Windows box, to a swish new Linux server.
You should find things are much much faster than before! No more waiting up to 3 minutes for a page to load! :)
As with any migration there will be a few small glitches that will need ironing out over the coming days. A common issue when moving from Windows to Linux environments is that, due to the different way each system handles filenames, some images will not display properly and some links may result in "404 Page not found" errors.
If you spot anything like that please PM me or post on this thread and I will correct.
Any other comments, positive or negative, concerning the move please post here.
Thanks
Matt

Thank God the details of season 10 are taking ages to upload.

We are moving to a new, faster, server over the weekend. This will involve some downtime on Saturday from 4pm onwards. The whole process may take up to 36hrs to complete.
Whilst the site is offline please use our Facebook group if you need to contact us.
Got there in the end :)
Would love to know what the asterisks replace in the OP

Are there any noticeable improvements in page loading speeds for anyone?
For me I am seeing "Page created in 0.038 seconds with 13 queries." (scroll to bottom of page) On the previous server it averaged between 3 and 10 seconds, with it occasionally taking 180 to 300 seconds.
-
I"m finding it extremely fast.
The "queries" sound worrying though?

Nope that"s perfectly standard, the number of queries would relate to the number of lookups the database has had to perform retrieving usernames and other details related to who has commented etc.
I loaded in . 0056 seconds with 22 queries. Smokin" fast.

No, that"s how it should be / always has been. In order to generate any forum page it requires a series of SQL queries to be processed, each grabbing information from a different part of the database. From username tables, to thread tables, even to tables describing location of emoticons etc.
Edit: See Paulie beat me to it.

I"m blown away by the speed. Knew the move to Linux was the way!

Once someone explained what Linux was to you...slowly, using short words and pictures. ;D

Nope, still have no idea what it is - but google told me it was the way to go!! Young Matt weaved his magic at that point.

Wasn"t Linux the kid with the blanket in Charlie Brown?

Absolutely loving the new lightening speed at which pages now load, but slightly bemused at having to log in every single time I visit the forum. I always select "forever" when asked how long I want to log in for, am I missing some other check box ?
-
Same here....
-
Just click on any forum. Auto logs you in. Well it does for me! I show as being a guest when I load up first page then I click any forum link and I"m logged in automatically

That works for me too.
-
Damn, I thought that was just me....
Will try clicking on a board to see if that auto logs me in.

Thanks for the heads up, and thanks others for the work-around tip too.
I"ll look into this. Might be something to do with cookies not being processed correctly following the server move.

Can everyone try this again now? I"ve made a couple of settings changes that should have fixed this issue.

Working fine for me, Matt - cheers. Also, the spambot issue has been sorted. All good.
