(https://scontent.flhr2-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/30729149_10156750955735681_4838615404400082944_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&_nc_eui2=v1%3AAeH4lWatqCXf3nzDrsyrhoCF8Jp0iAMBhh2QmICKL1CcFcS9NUvpY3M-sZ6CueA8lYqn3RfRVD4j3HFIB1y7za_06OVbSXubOrb6D_3-RoxUMw&oh=0b9b2dfaf593774ff2b913ba410142b8&oe=5B64A691)
Although it doesnt start until end of May as per usual im already looking at forming my 10 player team for this years game. So im gauging early interest to see how many we can get to join in again after previous years of success.

The scoring system will be the same as last year where players who make deeper runs are more rewarded.

1st -  25 pts
2nd - 18 pts
3rd - 15 pts
4th - 12 pts
5th - 10 pts
6th -  8 pts
7th -  6 pts
8th - 4 pts
9th - 2 pts
cashing 1 pt

Six handed tables will be.. cash 1 point up to 7th, then top 6 will be rewarded as above.
8 handed tables the same.. cash 1 point up to 9th, then 8th as above
HU events.. winner 25 points, RU 18 points, SF all guaranteed 15 points, Quarter finals guaranteed 12 points and so on.

No categories or captains, so just select 10 players of your choice and watch them run

We also agreed that we will allow up to two substitutions up to event #10.. this is purely so if anyone has picked a player who decides not to show up, they can change only them (max 2) you can't choose another player if a player has already played one of the previous 9 events.
I haven't yet run it past John but I'm sure he wouldn't mind, I also think players can have two teams if they so wish.
Cost will be £10 per team as per normal and dependant on runners will pay top 3 places..
Payments to myself via Bank transfer or PayPal.

Regarding submitting two teams.. the teams can either be totally different or you can use players already chosen in your first team.
APAT have kindly added a National seat to eventual winner.. thanks team!!

Just five days to go til the start of the 2018 WSOP. So just five days to get your teams in. We want this to be our biggest competition ever and we're well on course to achieve that. Send your teams to me and your money to Carl. This year we will also be updating on Facebook as much as we can in this Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/594624544240933/, but this thread on the APAT Forum is still the main home of the league, where all the details, statistics and updates will be posted.

Barrie Cullen is the reigning champion, with just a few weeks of his reign left before the title is passed on to someone new. Barrie has already sent in two teams in his attempt to retain the title, and he has made several changes from last year.

To help anyone who isn't sure who to pick, these were all the players selected last year and the points they achieved under our scoring system:

Daniel Negreanu    58    Charlie Carrel    19    Todd Brunson    6    Dominik Nitsche    2

A steady flow of teams have started to come in, making it another record breaking year..
When we first started a few seasons ago we struggled to get going in all honesty, but seems to have grown in popularity.
Think it's hats of to John and his legendary updates that keeps us coming back.

Two days to go!

If you don't have your team sorted yet, you really need to get your thinking boots on.

Previous winners:

2014 - Rob Swindells
2015 - Steve Ball
2016 - Luca Cannella
2017 - Barrie Cullen

Who will be added to that list this year? We had very close finishes for the first few years, with the outcome going down to the final event. Then last year we had a runaway winner who had it all sewn up long before the end. Will there be another runaway winner this time? Or will it be like 2015, when six points covered the top six entrants? The time to enter is now!

Is "Staker" also going to be running this year? Have enjoyed that in previous WSOPs.

Hi Paul.. the first event is 11pm our time tonight.
Any players selected after then will not score points until the start of the next event.

Thanks for all the entries so far - we have smashed our previous highest total. The Series started a while ago with the Casino Employees event, which doesn't affect our competition, followed at 11pm by the $10k NLHE Bounty tournament, which absolutely does. If you haven't yet entered, there is still time to be part of it. Hurry!

OK, the Series has started and Events #1 and #2 are close to conclusion. I'll post everyone's teams later. There have been some strong patterns in the teams, and some imaginative selections. Also some players overlooked who I would have expected to have been chosen by someone, based on their results. There has also been a return for several old favourites who were dumped out last year.

If rumours are to be believed (they are), there are some well-known players who are either playing a light schedule or not taking part at all this year. For the first time, we are allowing substitutions up til Event #10, so if your guys don't show up, all is not lost. However, you don't get any points for cashes made by players before you draft them in.

We are also accepting late entries for a few days. There have traditionally been a couple of people who have missed the cut-off, but we're not known for turning good money away. If you want to have a shot, get your team in ASAP. You won't get points for any cashes they they have already notched but, with 78 events, it probably won't matter too much.

#1 is down to thirteen players, but few, if any, of our selections will have played it. No-one chosen has cashed in it, so we can write that one off. There are six left in #2 and we have had a few cashes. I know you haven't seen the teams yet, but I can tell you that, of those selected, there have been cashes for Bryn Kenney, John Racener, Kenny Hallaert and Marc MacDonnell. We have two players still in - Paul Volpe, who is chip-leader, and Alex Foxen, currently sixth. You know if you have any of those.

Ok folks competition time for a little fun and maybe a small poker related prize to winner..

Right last year Barrie won with an impressive score of 312 points..

So the competition is without going over, the person who can guess  closest to the winning amount of points scored by top team wins.. simple as that.

One guess each and has to be in before Sunday evening 9pm.

Comment here or on FB thread so others can see your answer so no duplicates please.

GO!

I'll try to get the teams posted tomorrow night. I've been travelling and just have a tablet today but I should have a laptop tomorrow evening. Keeps the suspense going. I have received a couple of substitutions, but the initial lists will be the original teams.

Substitutions (max two) are allowed until the start of #10 on Sunday. Any substitutions received after a tournament has begun will not count for that event. This option is meant to help people who have no-shows in their team, rather than being a free-for-all, so no player can be substituted once they have played in any tournament. A player added to a team does not bring any points he has earned in earlier events.

Substitutes and late entries are an experiment this time round. We are interested in feedback on whether you think they are a good idea.

Dejuante Alexander, runner-up in last year's Millionaire Maker, has tweeted tonight: “I survive reading guys like you, I'm surprised ya'll think ya'll can disguise y'alls truths.”

He has banked $2m in live winnings, including over $750k for the MM. I can confirm that no-one has him in their team. Anybody want to sub him in?

These lists are the position when play began in the Series. I have allowed any amendments received before then as free changes. Any that came in after that point count as substitutions, and are not included above. I will feed them in in a bit. Substitutions close when #10 begins, which is 11.30pm on Sunday, so you need to work out whether your guys are playing by then, or you are stuck with them. Late entries will also close at the time.

Some substitutions were cancelled as the player being substituted took part in a tournament that began before the substitution was made, although the player didn't register for several hours after the substitution in most cases. Tommy and Jo managed to get Mercier out of their teams just in time before he cashed in #5.

This is our biggest competition by far. 55 teams have been entered by 40 people and a total of 123 players have been selected.

A lot of selectors have stuck with the old reliables like Negreanu and Hellmuth, who can be expected to clock up results as they chase bracelets or POY points. The new reliables like Monnette, Racener and Obst have had a lot of support, as have the likes of Bonomo, Chidwick and Mercier, despite under-performing last year. There are quite a few similarish teams featuring those players heavily and it would be hard to win without including a few of them. Some have tried to find an edge by identifying high-scoring players who others may miss, which I always like to see. We might feature some of those if there is time. For sure, there is some group-think going on, with several high-performing players ignored while we pile onto others. And some old guard who were rejected last year have made a comeback.

So, who were the most popular players?

Who has seen the most growth in their selections?

Negreanu was already top of the list, so it is a surprise that he has shown the most increase. There are only ten teams that he doesn't feature on.

Ben Yu and Chris Ferguson had minute support last year, but have been rewarded for super performances as, indeed, have most of these. I'm a bit surprised that last year's Player of the Year didn't get even more picks.

Player          2018          2017          Increase
Daniel Negreanu          45          19          26
Ben Yu          23          2          21
James Obst          26          7          19
Mike Leah          26          8          18
John Monnette          23          5          18
Stephen Chidwick          29          12          17
Chris Ferguson          17          1          16
Phil Hellmuth          19          7          12
Shaun Deeb          15          4          11
John Racener          14          3          11
Adam Owen          13          3          10

Zero to Hero. The players no-one wanted last year, who have come roaring onto the charts this time. Ivey and Zinno were previous favourites we turned our backs on, who are now finding favour once again.

The biggest losers. The previous favourites we have lost confidence in.

The 2018 WSOP has begun. Some likely talking points:

The quality of the cards has been an issue at some recent WSOPs. Will it come up again as a problem?

There are more low buy-in events and more high-rollers. Ho hum.

The Player of the Year formula has been changed quite a lot to make it fairer. Chris Ferguson was declared the winner in 2017 but applying the new formula to last year's tournaments shows that the winner would have been......Chris Ferguson. So that was worth all the trouble.

The Main Event is no longer the final tournament. At least it gives people a reason to stay around when the Main FT is on.

One of the silly tag teams events has been canned. The sooner the other one goes, the better, in my opinion. Two bounty events have been introduced, one of them a turbo. Again, I think that these are silly gimmick events that should be scrapped. Do you agree?

And finally, the most controversial change; the one you are mainly interested in - the age cut-off for the Super Seniors has been lowered from 65 to 60!

Fantastic stats John as always..
Looks like people have really done their homework.
I see the trend of loading teams with HR players.. could be down to players who score high in the lower buy ins that make all the difference this year.

So this year we have 40 players generating a £550 prizepool and we will be paying out top four.

Four places..
£220 for first with APAT seat and gold medal
£165 for runner up and silver medal
£110 for third and bronze medal
£55 for fourth and a pat on the back

Last place finisher get the wooden spoon of rubdown designed by yours truly

Also closest guess without going over of final winning team score gets the small poker bundle prize.

Thanks all that have entered and good luck may all your players run like Bonomo 🍀🍀

243 entries for a $10k! I think a one-day turbo bounty with an average of 25 BBs HU is exactly what the WSOP doesn't need, but it's hard to argue with how popular this experiment was. I guess players saw it as a chance to notch a result or move on without wasting too much time either way. The number of entrants will encourage them to do more of this, but flip-for-your-life lotteries ain't the way to dish out prestigious WSOP bracelets in my view.

Former WSOPE Champion Elio Fox won it against a loaded final table, which included Main Event winner Joe Cada. Volpe and Foxen scored points for their supporters. Volpe had the lead for much of the final table, but had to settle for bronze.

Taylor Paur, who finished 10th in this event last year (and 22nd in another shootout), won his first table, as did all our players listed above. Two of them, both Main Event winners, also won their second table to reach the final.

The final table was dominated by Joe McKeehen, who played a terrifically aggressive game from beginning to end, and led for almost all of it. With three players left, he held 2.5m chips against Joe Cada's 1.4m and Sam Phillips' 1.5m. There then followed some odd hands (and questionable play). First, with BB at 60k, Cada and Phillips got all-in pre-flop, holding 55 and AJ, respectively. Cada won the flip and Phillips was left with 100k. He quickly trebled up and then doubled up again to 700k. A few hands later, McKeehen four-bet all-in with 66 against Cada's KK and suddenly he was gone, having led for most of the day. Phillips fought back to even stacks and then, with BB at 80k, Cada raised to 180k, Phillips shoved for 2.75m and Cada called for 2.6m, holding 66. Phillips had A4, the 66 held and the tournament finished the next hand. Cada said afterwards that he knew it was a call. I'm not so sure.

Points for Tom F, Jon, Derek and Nic, who all have McKeehen. No-one picked him last year, and he won another bracelet, so it's not surprising that a few people have chosen him this time. What is surprising is that Cada wasn't selected at all, apart from a late addition as a substitute by Debbie. I predict that he gets a few picks next year.

Not that many points for us as we didn't get anyone onto the final table. There are poker specialists and then there is Kate Hoang, who reached a final table for the third year in a row and finished runner-up for the second time. It was her seventh WSOP cash in total, starting in 2015, and her Hendonmob only shows three other cashes away from the Series. And every one of those ten cashes came in Omaha Hi-Lo. She is known for being immaculately dressed, but stepped it up another level for the final session.

Another heavily-loaded tournament, with five bracelet-holders on the final table.

We are five tournaments in and Elio Fox is unlucky not to have won two of them. He should have won this to add to his victory in #2. He started heads-up 40m-13m behind, but dominated the one-on-one, winning ten and chopping one of the next fifteen pots to take a 37m-16m lead and looked like he would win by continuing to crush. It wasn't to be, though, as Petrangelo then sucked out for full stacks two hands in a row to snatch the win, first getting all-in pre-flop in desperation with J3 and then calling a raise on an AA2 flop with Q8 to land a bigger two pair than Fox already had. Fox just needed his pair to hold in the J3 hand to ake a second bracelet, but he is already dominating the Player of the Year table. Just a pity none of us have him.

Justin and Stuart led the way for points, with both fielding Nick 'Lucky' Petrangelo. Justin boosted his points by having three players on the FT, and the rest of us breathed a sigh of relief that Mateos and Holz didn't reach the podium too, which would have given him a big lead at this stage.

Johannes Becker has won a mixed-game bracelet. That's no surprise if you're familiar with his online play but it might be a huge surprise to some of those who disparaged his play last year when he lucked and sucked to a second place in the Players Championship.

http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php/topic,20051.msg255389.html#msg255389

He may have been lucky then, but coming back to win here shows that his game must have improved. And his heads-up was against Scott Seiver, one of his main tormentors last year, who will have been keen to avenge his multiple suck-out losses to Becker that time. Seiver held a 2.8m - 800k - 400k lead three-way, with Becker on the 400k, but it all went Becker's way from there on and he ran out the winner without too many dramas.

Chris and Paxo are the only ones with Seiver and Vitch, and took most of the points.

Not many points from the first of four online tournaments. It's hard to get more than one point when there are almost 3,000 entrants. This is one aspect of our scoring that I think we should review. Ryan Reiss finished 13th out of 2,972 and gets the same reward as Ryan Laplante, who was 249th.

Wow! I've got to hand it to you lot. This year's selections have been outstanding. Day 2 of #7 The Colossus commenced with 'only' 539 players remaining from the 13,070 who tried their luck through all the Day 1s. They are now down to 176 players and we have three of the top six! Vornicu, Foxen and Racener are all showing their class, with Bach and Cada right there in 11th and 25th places. At some point, I will have to work through the 1,754 players who made the cash, God help me. On the bright side, Safiya Umerova is going strong in 50th place. Last year I was remiss in not posting a picture of Safiya until halfway through the Series, an error I don't intend to repeat.

That's not all. #12 resumed with John Hennigan in the lead, where he remains, and he has been joined in the top five by Klodnicki and Lisandro. Leah, Yu, Monnette and Vitch are also well-placed.

And there's more. #9 $10k O8 is playing down from 22 to 6 today. There are twelve left at this stage and we have three of them - Volpe, Robert Mizrachi and Matusow. Yes, Matusow. He managed to hold himself together through last year's Series and he has done well again so far, as he invariably seems to whenever he is on the straight and narrow. Bjorin, Gorodinsky, Zinno and Rutter also cashed but were eliminated.

#14 2-7 NL started today and guess what, your picks are doing well here too, with Reiss, Greenstein, Glaser and Akkari in the top eight. Bach seems to also be playing this somehow.

Another experimental event, the eagerly awaited #13 the Big Blind Antes is up-and-running. There may be downsides to this format, but let's see how it goes. Farrell is currently sitting in 3rd place.

Outstanding picking guys. Millions of points on the way.

I take it all back. Your rotten players couldn't last the distance. When I went to bed, everything was good with the world. When I woke up, it was on fire. From dominating the top places in the Colossus, they all ran out of steam when the going got tough. You need to do better, but I'm not angry - just disappointed.

#7 Role of Horror:
Foxen out 59th.
Vornicu out 77th.
Cada out 97th.
Bach out 162nd.
Worst of all Safiya is out in 132nd place. :'(
Racener is lying 6th of the 32 remaining and that's all we've got.

Mizrachi and Matusow busted the Hi-Lo #9 - just Volpe left there.

At least our players in #12 Dealer's Choice performed. There are just 15 left after Day 2 and we still have Leah, Hennigan, Vitch, Lisandro and Klodnicki, in that order. We also have a lot of survivors after Day 1 of #14 2-7NL. No doubt that will change. We have a few down the field in #13, but no-one challenging the leaders.

Celebrations for several of our selectors as Volpe brought home the $10k Hi-Lo. A lot of big names played this and it came down to Volpe against Elezra at the end, Elezra having led the field for much of the tournament. Volpe was humble afterwards ""I think a lot of people with the same cards as me would have won the tournament." I'm not sure he has a future in poker with that kind of attitude. He went on "I was mainly worried about Paresh Doshi, one of the best up-and-coming players I have seen for a long time. I was glad when he eliminated as I knew the job would be a lot easier without him in the field."

Six people have Volpe but only Stephen combined him with Mizrachi, so he bagged the most points in this one.

Most of us struggle with one, but this tournament was played across twenty poker formats, with the players taking turns to choose the game. The strategy is often to find the games you opponents are weak at, rather than opting for your own best game. John Hennigan led for much of it but fell away near the end. We had a queue of players just short of the final table but, ultimately, no big points here.

Chris Vitch should have more picks. The co-founder/owner of DeucesCracked.com got close again, his 13th place following a 4th the other day. He had three top-ten finishes in 2016 and three more last year, including a bracelet both years. He also cashed in last year's Main Event for good measure.

Leah and Monnette picked up their third cashes of the Series, while Klodnicki, Hennigan and Yu got their second. Sadly for us, they have all been one-pointers.

This tournament will be remembered for three things: firstly, it is Colombia's first ever bracelet; secondly, the winner, Daniel Ospina, got to heads-up in this very same tournament in 2015, lost and gave up poker for two years before coming back and nailing the win; and finally, for Shaun Deeb's double-header, as he went really deep in two tournaments at the same time and almost made simultaneous final tables, something no-one has ever achieved.

Deeb played Day 1 of the Big Blind Antes event on Tuesday, which finished at 11.30pm and then jumped into this, which had started later and still had two levels to play. He was quite a way down the field in the BBA, so I assume he saw this as insurance against the inevitable knockout in the first tournament. One thing led to another and, somehow, he made it through Day 2 of both. It helped that the BBA started and finished two hours before the 2-7 and they had different dinner breaks. He ended up playing both Day 3's at the same time, again with a two-hour start difference, which ain't easy when both events are at their climax. Luckily, the organisers agreed to for the two tournaments to play side-by-side on Day 3 and he had a short run between tables - you don't want to be missing hands at that point.

Deeb's effort has been recorded for posterity. Here he is getting some exercise:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=q7Shyyl0jW4

It ended unhappily. Deeb is known for slow-rolling all and sundry and had some bad blood with Ospina, who said afterwards that "I decided last night if the opportunity presented itself to slow roll him, I was definitely going to do it." That opportunity came when Deeb moved in and Ospina thought for a bit before calling with an 8-high, a snap-call in single draw. Deeb admitted on Twitter that he nearly slow-rolled his 9-high "Just got slowrolled to bust nld 3rd almost slowrolled him first assuming I was always good but I didn't and got punished" but then he went for Ospina for affecting his chances in the other tournament "Slowrolled whatever stallig while I'm multitasking to burn equity of mine in a diff tourney is just shady as **** knew he was a douche and glad others had same read that i talked to"

Who would you expect to win Brazil's first bracelet of the year - Andre Akkari, Felipe Ramos, Bruno Politano? No, they were all on the sidelines cheering and taking photos while an amateur won gold.

The Professionals Railing the Amateur

It was a strange final table, with more amateurs than professionals. The pro's went out though and the top places were contested by three players with two WSOP cashes totalling less than $6k between them, and one of those was in the Casino Employees event nine years ago. Third-placed Joel Wurtzel has no previous recorded cashes of any kind. For reaching the podium from over 13,000 players, they received $1.8m between them.

Joel Wurtzel celebrates his first cash

It looked for a while like several of our players might score highly when we had several in the top dozen, but they almost all dropped away, so points scored are low. With 1,754 playing making the cash, it is likely I have missed some. Please let me know if your guy has been overlooked. I will check all the players near the end to pick up any misses, though they would be one pointers, so it shouldn't affect the outcome too much.

We had our first APAT cash in this event, that I'm aware of, with Gerald David cashing in 1,618th place. Please let me know of any APATers you know are playing and I'll highlight them.

Aylar was born in Iran but grew up in the foster system in Norway. On visiting her father in Iran as a teenager, she was prevented from leaving and kept there for two years until she escaped. She moved to the US to search for her mother and took up acting, starring in movies such as Throat Gaggers 3, Cum Dumpsters 3, 18 and Nasty Interracial 2, World Class Ass 4 and the classic Cock Smokers 49. Her work can be viewed on PornHub and other similar media outlets.

After a while, she gave up drugs and porn and moved back to Norway, where she managed to cross over into mainstream work. She reached the final ten of Miss Norway, but had to withdraw when her background became known. She featured in several music videos, including one with Sean Paul, and has appeared on Norwegian TV many times, both acting and as herself, including the Norwegian version of Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, where she was runner-up.

Here she is singing her six-times platinum hit record Boys Boys Boys  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKSbYZZHJ8U

If you liked that, here is Some People https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFiuHnQ5hJk

These days, Aylar is one of Europe's top poker players, building an impressive poker CV over the last two years http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/ranking/11/#390. Last year, she displaced Liv Boeree as No 1 on the GPI list of European Female players and yesterday she cashed in the Colossus, finishing 148th out of 13,070 players.

The other half of the Deeb attempt. Benjamin Moon started playing live tournaments five months ago and already has a WSOP bracelet. Prior to this, he only had three recorded live cashes, two of which were min-cashes of less than $1k, though he showed his ability by winning the other one for $12k. He came to the final table as chip-leader and ran over it, forcing players to fold and give up chips as they abandoned trying to win and tried to ladder up the cash. Six players returned for the final day and he polished them off in three hours. Formerly-scandalous Dutch Boyd made the final of this, finishing ninth.

Massive congratulations go to APAT player Gerald 'Skullman' David, who cashed again, this time almost reaching the final table, finishing 12th out of 1,306 players.

Justin Bonomo - What is going on? He has always had an amazing record but this year it has gone off the scale.

Since the beginning of December he has won 11 High-Roller tournaments, a streak that is surely unprecedented. Up til the start of May, he had clocked up an unbelievable run of results, picking up a bunch of titles and prizes, including almost $4.8m for one in Macau. Since then, it has become absurd.

He won two EPT events in three days on 1 May and 3 May in Monte Carlo for $457k and $311k. For the next couple of weeks he didn't play live much, mainly playing SCOOP without much success (just a 4th and a 5th), attending the EDC festival and moving into a new pad. He played the $25k Aria High Roller on 23 May, but was clearly rusty and only came fourth.

On 27 May he won his biggest prize ever - $5m for taking down the $300k Super High Roller Bowl. On the 31st, he won the Aria High Roller, along with $350k. On 3 June he went and won it again for yet another $310k. Now, with this result, he has won four tournaments in two weeks and six in just over a month! Where will it end? Will it ever end? He himself has tweeted that he doesn't understand what has been happening. I put it down to going back to a natural hair colour.

He has won over $14m this year already, which has shot him up the all-time winnings list into third place. In the last two weeks he has overtaken Ivey, Holz, Esfandiari and Colman. Negreanu is currently top, but I'll bet no-one can name who is the second-highest with looking it up, unless you happened to read it recently. There will almost certainly be a new leader after this Series - you won't find many betting against it being Bonomo.

The tournament saw an excellent slow-roll by Niall Farrell, holding AA, who tanked and asked for a count before calling the pre-Flop shove of his room-mate Michael Gagliano. If they can afford to pay six or seven figures in entry fees over the Series, why are these guys sharing accommodation?

Something I don't understand about the Heads-Up is how they treat the overflow entries. They had 114 entries and needed to get to 64 for the next round, so 14 went through and 100 played off for the other 50 places. So far, so normal but.........those 100 players were refunded half of their entry fee. I think this started when they had 65 entries a few years ago and hit on the idea of drawing two players who would, effectively, play a two-handed $5k satellite for the 64th spot. That seemed a clever solution but now they have ended up refunding almost half of the entry fees, and almost everyone playing a $5k event, reducing the prize-pool to just over half what it could have been. Maybe they should have a rethink.

The first Russian bracelet this year. Zhigalov only likes limit games, and there aren't any in his part of Russia, so he only plays live every June. Despite that, he has been knocking on the door, with two 4th places, a 7th and a 9th in the last couple of years. We also found out that Kate Hoang can play other games, as she picked up her first non Hi-Lo cash in 39th place. I'm not sure that much else interesting happened in this tournament, so here are pics of some of the well-known players who took part instead.

Essex Home Game player Stuart Rutter is in final 3 of #18 $10k DC. Coming back tomorrow for an unscheduled day 4

No more bracelets decided, with six tournaments finishing unfinished, if you know what I mean. There will be lots of results to post later. The points race is starting to warm up and Luca looks like having another good day.

#17: $1.5k NLHE 6-Handed - This finished, er.....six-handed, with Nick Schulman still representing Luca's interests.

#18: $10k Dealers Choice 6-Handed - Just three left, and Stuart Rutter is one of them. Klodnicki, ODB and Marco Johnson all made the final table, so plenty of points to spread around here.

#19: $565 PLO - 10 left, including Duhamel.

#20: $5k NLHE Big Blind Antes - 24 left, with Shawn Buchanan well-placed in fifth and Peters, Chidwick and Bicknell hanging out the bottom of the list.

#21 $1.5k Millionaire Maker - We have a few survivors in this. No luck for our own Dave Stone, who didn't get through.

#22: $1.5k 8-Game - 134 left, including Bach, Soulier, Vornicu, Negreanu, Zinno, Obst, Yu in the top 20 and many others down the field. Jon Turner finished the day as chip-leader for the second day in a row, having recovered from less than one big blind in Day 1B of the Giant on Thursday to finish with a massive stack.

Haha loving these updates John..
Would be awesome to see Stuart Rutter snaffle a bracelet a very strong mixed games player who always seems to run deep silly me not for having him in my team after I messed up and picked 11 players.

The climax of the Colossus. 13,068 players have been eliminated and just two remain.

All the chips go in on the Flop and Sang Liu is ahead of Roberly Felicio. On the verge of becoming WSOP Champion, his poker mask starts to slip a little:

Rutter almost reached a final table earlier in the week, finishing 13th in #14. This time he made it all the way to heads-up. Lots of points for his supporters, but Luca matched them by having Baker and Johnson.

The final-tablists had a kind of punching thing going on when they got eliminated.

There was also an excess of singlets. It's high time the WSOP introduced a one-singlet-per-table policy.

Four of the six at the final table had bracelets at home, but it was the two who didn't who contested the heads-up, with an opportunity to avenge old national grudges in an Italy v Bulgaria showdown. This was runner-up Antonio Barbato's first WSOP cash - nice to start off on $234k!

In a key hand, four-handed, Dimov called a huge bluff by Ryan D'Angelo with  Ks Js  on  an ad1 Qc 8d 9s Kh board to move into a big lead, which he never lost thereafter.

Why are there so many Bulgarians in Dimov's victory photo? "I am a really nice and good guy, everybody loves me. No, I am kidding, it is because they are really bad at poker and busted the Millionaire Maker."

Only one person had Nick Schulman on their team. There's no stopping Luca right now.

Varnell took advantage of the final table bubble to chip up. He started Day 3 second in chips with 1.95m and put the screws on the players who were laddering to the FT so that, by the time the 10th player was knocked out and they had made the final, he had 3.45m and a big lead, which was never in danger thereafter. The only threat was Maxime Heroux, who finally went out 4th when the two biggest stacks clashed. Heroux and Varnell had avoided each other all day as they fed off the rest of the table, but the clash had to come sooner or later.

Varnell has an unorthodox attitude to PLO. "I'm not as educated in the game as a lot of people. I just kind of have a feeling for the game. I think it kind of gives me an advantage sometimes when people are so in their heads with math and GTO." Food for thought.

Tony Kendall, former Chairman of APAT, was 261st.

It was a very odd heads-up, with horrendous play by Wien, who was only playing 'good' hands, giving a walk on nearly half of his buttons and folding to most of David Laka's pre-flop raises. He had the button 69 times and cold-folded 32 of them. Maybe he's not used to heads-up. Despite that, when he did have a hand he was willing to play, he managed to grab enough chips to keep himself going. Laka had run over the final table, particularly stepping up the pressure once it got to three-handed against Wien and third-placed Eric Blair. He tended to call all of Wien's pre-flop raises, but seemed to miss every time and had to fold when Wien c-bet or shoved the Flop. Towards the end, with stacks just 25BB deep, Wien was just open-shoving his good hands. On the final hand, with almost even stacks, Wien had AA against Laka's QQ and, there was no saving the superior player.

Several of the players were well wrapped up, though I'm not sure whether it was to avoid giving tells or to protect themselves from the Rio's air-conditioning. Probably both.

This is gonna shake things up - Negreanu finally gets a cash, and it's a big one, finishing third in the 8-Game. With Racener in 4th, there are oodles of points, and several teams have both players. There are a few people with two or three other scorers as well, who might have thought they would top the points for this event, but Adam got six of his team into the points.

Philip Long has had a bigger cash than this - he was 29th in the Main Event a few years ago, but I think this will replace it as his favourite memory.

If you run into Chris Ferguson at the Rio, please don't be unkind.

Chris Ferguson  @ChrisFerg1963
I have had people approaching me at the Rio and saying unkind things. I have apologized and remember, I'm just a player, just like everyone here.  I am sorry that Black Friday was not prevented by me, and I would have done so if the circumstances were right.

Meanwhile, Chris' Main Event Champion banner is looking a bit different. Something seems to be missing, but I can't put my finger on it.

Day 2 has completed in the Millionaire Maker, with the field reduced from 7,361 starters to just 155 - and several big names are still involved. Europe's Number 1 female player, Aylar Lie, is sitting pretty in 25th place. Stanley Lee, currently fifth, has finished 24th, 9th and 39th in this tournament for the last three years and was 3rd in the Monster Stack last year for just over $500k. The official updates have this down as his fourth deep WSOP run, but they have missed one as it's actually his fifth.

Other names I recognised on a scan down the list:

3 Manig Loeser
33 Joe McKeehen
37 Steve Sung
40 Joseph Cheong
55 JC Tran
56 Barny Boatman
58 David Eldridge
60 Samad Razavi
68 Elio Fox
79 Jason Wheeler
87 Greg Merson
96 Thomas Taylor
106 Mark Radoja
147 James Dempsey

Which convicted criminal, who had over $6m of illegal earnings seized, as well as doing prison time, has cashed in this year's WSOP, just missing the final table by a few places?

All warming up nicely.. although Luca has a lead it can all change in a flash, Brian Rast winning the 2-7 low ball has scored max 25points for three of our players more importantly Craig who was err 25points behind.
27 events have been running of 78 and we are well on course for the highest individual score to beat Barrie's last year score of 332 albeit more events this year.

Only 95 runners, but every one was a heavyweight. Not many people enter a $10k 2-7 tournament unless they know what they are doing. By the time they reached the cash, 10 of the 15 players were bracelet-winners and everyone had a long list of WSOP cashes, with one exception - more of that later. This was Doyle Brunson's final appearance in the Series, and he reached the final table, finishing 6th.

Brian Rast won his fourth bracelet, lifting Craig up the points table, being the only person to also pick John Hennigan.

Todd Brunson and Doyle Brunson both reached the top ten.

The one player to cash in the $10k 2-7, who didn't have a long WSOP pedigree, was Illya Trincher. That's not to say he doesn't know how to play - his father Vadim Trincher won a WPT Championship and Illya has played a lot at a high level, but mainly high-stakes cash.

The Trinchers' main activity was operating a multi-million dollar sports-betting book and high-stakes poker games for millionaires and billionaires, a lot of it being run from Vadim's apartment in Trump Tower. They are believed to have had the richest sportsbook in the world, as well as laundering over $100m of Russian crime money. Vadim also holds the distinction of having sued Donald Trump, claiming $6m over a leak from the apartment above, previously owned by Bruce Willis and Demi Moore until they divorced, and owned by Trump at the time of the leak.

Anyway, the whole thing was highly illegal and they all went down for it, with 29 people prosecuted (one of them being Molly Bloom). Vadim got five years and he and one other were ordered to forfeit $20m each. Illya was sentenced to six months prison and six months home confinement and had to cough up $6.4m. https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/newyork/news/press-releases/defendant-sentenced-in-manhattan-federal-court-to-six-months-in-prison-and-six-months-home-confinement-for-being-a-leader-of-an-international-multi-million-dollar-illegal-sports-gambling-business

Illya spent the week before he went inside playing $2k/$4k at Bobby's Room with Phil Ivey and two of the others involved (one of them being Abe Mosseri, who won a second bracelet last year) before flying to New York by private jet to begin his sentence. He has kept a low profile since then until he showed up for the $10k PLO last week. He was 12th in the $10k 2-7 (the Brunson tournament) and is currently 7th out of 52 remaining in the $10k HORSE (#27). It would be interesting to see how a Trincher win would be handled.

That 2-7 tournament was something of a rogues gallery. Another correct answer would have been Shawn Sheikhan, owner of a chain of tobacco shops / tattoo parlours round Vegas. I haven't heard of him for a couple of years, but he showed up for this event (looking a bit rough) and was another who reached the final table. Shawn did nine months in the clink, plus five years probation, for sexual battery.

The Millionaire Maker has finished, and Joe McKeehen was third, which means points for Jon, Tom F, Chris K, Nic and Derek.

#24 is down to 60 players, but we just have Jacobson and Moorman mid-pack. I also notice Scotty and Staszko are going, as are two of my favourite players, Zu Zhou and Yew Kan.

#25 and #26 are near their end, but we have no-one on the final table of either, and very few who cashed. Not many points coming here.

#27 is where the action is now - this one could be huge for Craig. There are 16 players going into Day 3. John Hennigan is third in chips, and he is only on one team, owned by Craig. Randy Ohel is on two teams - both of which belong to Craig. Barrie, Paxo, Jo, Richard, Karen, Stephen and Chris H will all be cheering for Zinno, currently 12th, while, Paxo, Stephen, Carl, Chris B and Chris K will be hoping that Robert Mizrachi will recover from last place of those still in. Others still in include Aylar Lie's husband Albert Daher, who crushed the recent EPT in Monte Carlo, winning both the High Roller and the Turbo, Carol Fuchs, Bakes and...........Illya Trincher. Don't take your eyes off this one!

A rare bracelet for Germany, but what can you say about Joe McKeehen? On top of winning the Main Event, he has now final-tabled the Monster Stack, the High Roller One Drop and The Millionaire Maker. Before any of that, he was World Champion at Risk. What next? No-one picked him last year, and he won another bracelet. This year he has five supporters, who are very happy that he has already chalked up two third-places. I'm confident he will be on even more teams next year. Ralph Massey was 7th in the Colossus last year and his 8th place in this made him the first player to reach the final of both.  Barny Boatman also reached another final table.

In contrast to some other tournaments, well-known professionals were few in this. Felipe Ramos was the only big name on the final table, but he could only manage 4th.

Debbie is the only person with Cada on her team. If she had from the start she would be challenging for the lead, but I'm sure he still has more points to bring.

Rast's win has propelled Craig into the lead, his Dream Team now having picked up two bracelets and had a bunch of other final tables. Volpe and Rast's wins have been backed up by strong performances by Racener, Negreanu, Klodnicki, Chidwick, Hennigan and Peters. His only misclicks are Obst and Ohel. What's that - Ohel has finished 5th in the HORSE? And Hennigan has won it for a third team bracelet? Those points are still to be added, so Craig is heading for a monster lead. That just leaves Obst not weighing in for the team - that's Obst who had four top-eight finishes in his nine cashes last year, including a 1st and a 2nd. I have a feeling there will be points from him too before long.

Former professional pool player John Hennigan bested a star-studded field to take down the $10k HORSE, winning heads-up against David 'Bakes' Baker. Third-placed Laith Salem finished fifth in the Main Event way back when Scotty Nguyen won it.

Craig cleaned up, stretching his lead with the winner and fifth-placed Ohel giving him a total of 35 points. Is this the decisive break?

Michael Addamo is Australia's No 1 player, both live and online, though he moved to Thailand last year, when Australia banned online poker. Imluckbox has won a SCOOP Hi-Roller and Patrick Leonard recently ranked him as the 5th best player online. He has also won and final-tabled a bunch of flagship live tournaments. He is 23, so this is just the third year he has been eligible to play the World Series. He cashed 16 times in his first two years, including a third place each year and now he has his first bracelet. It surely will not be his last.

Martin Jacobson weighed in for Jon's team. He seems to have matured a lot since he won the Main. I reckon I could have taken him in a fight at that time, but he looks fitter now.

The bracelets are getting sprayed around different countries now, with one for Israel this time.

Yifrach lives in Cali now, running his businesses, and only plays high-roller cash and tournaments. “I'm playing mainly bigger events so it's going to be worth my time.”

He wasn't happy that he had to waste his time hanging around for an extra day to win a bracelet. "I felt like I was going to win it that night. It didn't happen. When the floor announced that we only have 10 minutes left and we can't continue playing, I got a little upset because I was supposed to leave the next morning. I was supposed to be out of here.”

With a 10m-1.6m-1.2m dominating stack three-handed, he called both of the others light in the last hands of Day 3 to try to end it, but just doubled them both up. In the end, he won with a suckout, with stacks almost even, he called James Mackey's Turn shove with A8 on an 8-high board against Mackey's TT, and hit an 8 on the River.

Nice of Mercier to turn up.

Take a bow, Cody Wagner.

Cody has joined a very exclusive club of APAT players who have played on a WSOP final table, previously consisting of just Steve Bradbury, Liam Alcock and Dave Burt. Have I missed anyone? Unless I have, Cody becomes the fourth APAT player to accomplish this achievement. This was a smaller field than the mass numbers in Hold'em tournaments, but it was loaded with professionals - five of the top twelve had won bracelets previously. Like the other three, Cody won his trip to Vegas, so the $30,926 he won is virtually all profit.

Bambrick turned up an hour late on Day 2 and finished the day with the chip lead, with 13 players left. By the time he showed on Day 3, two players had been eliminated. "It's a long walk to the room and I like to sleep in sometimes", he explained. It's important to get your priorities right.

Steve Albini of the band Shellac of North America was the unexpected winner of this tough event, which ended up with two previous Player of the Year winners in the top four. We haven't seen much from Lisandro for a while but winning three bracelets in one year means we are willing to give him a long-term pass, and he justified it by coming back to almost win another one.

It was a big result for Tom, who is the only selector with Lisandro, as well as having Ferguson.

Day 3 of the Players Championship completed with Michael Mizrachi leading the twelve remaining players. Almost all of those players are on our teams, so there is an untold number of ways the points could go in this - it could be very good or very bad for a lot of people. I wouldn't like to be the person with the task of working out the points for this one.

Robert Mizrachi finished Day 1 of #35 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo in 3rd position, making it a very good day for the family. Eddie Blumenthal is in 4th, but we don't have anyone else in the 31 players remaining. Jon Turner, Carol Fuchs and Allyn Shulman are probably the best-known players still in this.

#32 and #36 are the Seniors and Super-Seniors. Not expecting many points in these, though there may be a couple of our players down the field.

Day 1B of #34 $1k Double Stack completed with Rulah Devine amongst the leaders. Rulah won a bracelet last year and those of you who were here then may remember that his wife Egypt has an unusual occupation - creating adult industry erotic fantasy experiences. Event#39 is under way.. so that makes it roughly half way through.. so plenty of time for you all to score masses of more points (maybe not Tom).
Huge thanks to John so far as he never lets us down with his legendary updates and added fun facts!
Time for some of the pros to start pulling their fingers out start scoring us some points then I guess.. I'm personally hoping for a Adam Owen heater he has had a awful series, but that could probably be said the same for a few others.

Good luck folks 🍀🍀

And congratulations to our own Linda Iwaniak.

We can't begrudge Zhu his first bracelet - he has previously been 2nd (twice), 3rd (four times), 4th, 6th (twice, including last year in this tournament) and 9th.

Our friend Carol Fuchs was a bit unlucky when she was knocked out in 3rd place, having a six-low and a six-high straight and losing with both.

Lots of single points, mainly due to Hellmuth, so there was no real effect on the league.

By far the scoringest event so far, with many selectors having more than one player on the final table. Nathan topped the list, closely followed by Carl, both of them having Mizrachi and Leah on their teams.

The various permutations and high scoring all round meant that this event could have had a huge effect on the league in numerous possible ways. While not coming out on top, Craig extended his lead, with his team putting up a decent score, while his closest rivals mainly didn't score so highly. With many more high buy-in events to come, this tournament shows that big swings are possible and this competition still has a long way to run.

Take that WSOP!

Linda gave the WSOP the 1-2 last night, finishing in 4th place hot on the heels of cashing in the Seniors, smashing Vegas just like she smashes it over here. Linda had the most chips at one point on the final table, so a few cards running out differently might have meant her picking up the bracelet, but 4th in the World Series is a super result.

Bonyadi's win is quite a landmark. Coming at the age of 83, it makes her the oldest-ever bracelet-winner, beating the record of none other than Johnny Moss, who won the 1988 $1,500 Limit A-5 Draw on his 81st birthday. She also takes Paul "Cigar” McKinney's record as the oldest person to win their first bracelet (2005 Seniors, aged 80). Another remarkable aspect is that she is the mother of three-times champion Farzad Bonyadi, making them the only mother-son bracelet-winning combination. She is also the only woman to win a bracelet so far this year.

But we don't care about that. This one was about Linda! The UK Ladies Champion and first-ever captain of the APAT England team is now a WSOP final-tablist.

If you've heard players talking about game theory and suchlike, and don't know what they're going on about, the winner has a message for you: “I think a lot of that advancement of strategy stuff can sometimes be taken too far and can sometimes seem intimidating to a recreational player. But there's always trends and strategies and there are always people talking like they are super smart. Don't be intimidated by something like that.”

Our cashers all won their first-round shoot-out, but went out in the second round. Hellmuth has a higher finishing position due to finishing third on his second-round table. He had the lead three-way, but was unlucky to lose for stacks twice with AQ both times.

Another tournament that had a multitude of possible big impacts on our competition - all of which came to nothing as our players wilted under the pressure and, in an incredible sequence, all crashed out just before the final table.

It is amazing that no-one has selected Ryan Hughes, who was runner-up in this. The first player ever to win two Stud 8 bracelets cashed sixteen times last year, including two 5th places, two 7ths and a 10th, one of the 7ths coming in this event. This is only his third cash so far this time round (he was 7th in #35), but there will be more. Here's a tip - pick Ryan Hughes next year.

Wowsers! That's shaken things up! Eight selectors scored 44 or 45 points, plus lots of other high scores, while Craig got just one point. That's going to close the race right up.

This was the second time that Deeb and Yu got heads-up against each other and Deeb managed to reverse last year's outcome. It's a given that a $25k tournament will have a super-strong field and final table - Scotty Nguyen was third and last year's winner, James Calderaro, was fourth.

Craig still has a lead on the peloton, but it has been more than halved. With so many people so tightly packed at the front of the pack, it is inevitable that some will hit another big result. If I was Craig, I would be worried now.

A win for Spain this time. Prats was heads-up for a bracelet last year, but ended up second, so was extra pleased and relieved to get back to heads-up again and win this time. No big scores in this on for us. Jon Tomato again came close to doing the job for Nye, but just missed the final table. One player who did get to that table was former Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko, who must have been dreaming of being runner-up again, but it wasn't to be, with him dropping in eighth place. Fellow November-Niner Pierre Neuville also cashed, not for the first time this year.

I scoffed at Ismael Bojang a while ago for his many deep runs without getting over the line, but he has made me eat my words here. He has made the top 20 on 21 occasions (27 including WSOP Asia & Europe) and the final table 10 times (14 with Asia/Eur), but has never previously finished higher than 4th. Well he showed me and topped all that with a career-defining second place in this. With over 1,200 entrants, you can't get better than that.

His heads-up opponent had his own monkey on his back, having finished 2nd in this very event in 2015. Someone's O had to go. The two of them gave up playing poker and started lobbing the lot in pre-flop and the 10m/5m lead flipped both ways a couple of times until Margolin sucked out two hands in a row, his QJ and KQ beating Bojang's AK and A2.

Ferguson was 4th and Ryan "I'm Gay" Laplante was 6th.

Hani Awad owns this event. He was second in it in 2015, won it in 2016 and he reached the final table again, notching up 6th place this time.

It was another heavy final table, five of whom were already bracelet-winners. When he got to three-handed, Brookshire was facing two players, Brendan Taylor and Daniel Ospina, who both had 1st and 2nd place results previously, plus a bunch of other top-five finishes, with Ospina going for his second bracelet of this Series. Brookshire won out, though, coming through in his first final table. Fourth place went to Mexico's Ian Shaw who, apparently, used to be an international cricket player.

We nearly had mother & son bracelets. Farzad Bonyadi, son of Super Seniors winner Farhintaj Bonyadi, reached the final table of #44: $10k 27TD, finishing 4th. Her bracelet counts as Iranian; his count as American.

The final table included Jerry Wong and Alexey Makarov, who haven't won bracelets, although they both have a bunch of final tables until their belts, one of Wong's being the Main Event. The other six all have bracelets at home (actually Scott Bohlman's is probably in his hotel safe, as it's just a week since he won it). Ryan Hughes made his third final table of the Series.

Porter and Shack-Harris did well for their managers, but it was the relatively 'unknown' Loren Klein who whipped them all. Some players become favourites and others hardly register in the poker public's consciousness, despite big achievements. No-one picked Klein for their teams, but this is the third year in a row he has won a bracelet (only the third player post-boom to have done that), and he has had another two second places in his nine final tables. I predict that he is going to carry on winning bigly, winning more than anyone ever thought possible, for years to come.

What a result for Stephen!

Mixed-games specialists filled the first few places - in fact Kwon describes himself as a Razz specialist. I was hoping that Urbanovich would win, so I could say I have been called an idiot by a bracelet-winner. I have played against Colisea online many times but discovered last year that he doesn't appreciate my play. He came to the WSOP in 2016 with a big reputation from EPTs and COOPs, saying he was going to win three bracelets, and got sent home with his tail between his legs, both that year and in 2017. Now, at last he is justifying the expectation and I can finally look forward to being able to brag about being dissed by a champ.

The Monster Stack has finally finished. We are never going to score many points in these mass events, but IrishTom scored twice as many as any other selector. Congrats go to APAT Main Event runner-up Jonathan Walker.

Fifth-placed Daniel Corbett has had an impressive couple of years, winning a GUKPT Main Event and a 25/25, as well as coming 10th in the Goliath and 3rd in a 1,000-runner Rio Daily Deepstack. Still waiting for his first APAT cash, though.

Only Chris has got Seiver, but several have Zinno, and the gap closes even more, with Barrie and Paxo leading the charge.

There was a political earthquake in America yesterday, with the expected next House leader of the Democrats losing to a 28-year-old Socialist - and Seiver was showing his support for the challenger on the final table. PokerStars banned political statements a couple of years ago, but you can still make you point at the WSOP, though it helps if you can make it to a final table first.

We seem to have lost our touch a bit in the current tournaments. Hardly any big scores recently, and we have no-one in the later stages of #54, #55 or #57.

Beresford, Jacobson, Silver, Akkari & Parker are still in #58, with about 100 left, but are all well down the field.

Glantz, Ferguson, Leah and Michael Mizrachi are propping up the field in #59, with about 80 still playing.

The Razz (#56) Is the only one where we have some action going on. Anderson currently has the most chips of the remaining six and Leah is still there short-stacked in fifth, trying to do a Deeb. Hennigan has just gone out 7th and Urbanovich was 8th. Julien Martini is challenging for his second bracelet of the year.

Another loaded final table for a $10k event. Would Urbanovich get his bracelet? Another chance, so soon after being runner-up in #50. Jerry Wong has also been knocking on the door, including finishing 4th in #49. Would Martini or Hennigan win their second of the year or would Anderson, Kassela or Leah add to their stock?

After his win, Anderson shared his delusions at some length about how he is helped by positive thinking, the Law of Attraction and "a lot of other universal and spiritual truths". Despite all that, he still won.

A lot of people have Leah but, despite all the finalists we had, there weren't any major points breakthroughs, though Luca made up a bit of ground with Anderson.

Some events don't seem to attract many professionals. This was won by former billiards pro Mike 'The Lightning Kid' Takayama, who lived up to his name by blitzing the final table, arriving with nine bounties and finishing the tournament, less than 50 hands later, with sixteen.

Steve Jelinek won a bracelet some years ago but I haven't heard of him for quite a while, but he has come back and finished 4th in this.

Tosoc won $1.1m for being runner-up in the Vegas WPT Main Event in 2016. In 2017, he won the title and $1.9m.

He nabbed sixth place in the $25k PLO HR last week and has now secured a bracelet and two $200k+ results in a week, along with two-thirds of a triple-crown in seven months.

And that's all I have to say about this.

Yeah, Galfond won. Whatever.

That's $568k to add to his riches, which should please him as he told us last year that he doesn't care about bracelets and only plays for he money.

On the other hand, his wife tweeted:

It's the Main Event!

In previous years, the Main was the last tournament and we could just focus on that, which worked quite well from our point of view, but this time there are still lots more events to run alongside and even after the Main has finished, so we'll see how that goes.

795 players took part in Day1A yesterday and only 134 were eliminated, but they included three former ME Champions - Qui Nguyen, Jerry Yang and defending champion Scott Blumstein. Previous winners who did get through were Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen and Joe McKeehen.

Chidwick, Ramos, Rast and Kornuth also bombed.

Srinivas Balasubramanian started the final table as chip leader with 18½m, compared with 11m for the second-placed player - and finished ninth just over half an hour later! First Srinivas had a player all-in on the Flop, with two outs, but one of them came and he dropped 6m. A couple of minutes later he doubled up a second player and lost 5m. He won 3½m from Mizrachi, but then doubled him up for 7½m, so a net loss of 4m. Before long he lost his last 4m to yet another player and was eliminated first.

Tim Andrew, playing in his first WSOP tournament, started 4th in chips but slept late and missed the start. They started at the crack of 2pm so I guess it was understandable. He arrived at the table just in time to see Balasubramanian's elimination. After the tournament, he came up with a never-to-be forgotten insight into why he won: "I love playing poker".

Galen Hall is a full-time hedge fund manager as well as a part-time poker pro and has only been able to play a limited number of events, going back and forth to work, popping in at lunchtime to bust a tournament and so on.

A nice score from Zaichenko brings Jordan into contention.

And another cash for Jon Walker.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Hall. Would you like to keep the bracelet or go for the washer-dryer?

Almost a second bracelet for Player of the Year contender Scott Bohlman, who lost heads-up. Third-placed Ken Aldridge has worn his only bracelet every day since he won it in 2009, so it might be just as well he didn't get another one.

A lot of players, pro and am, seemed to overlook this event, I guess because many of them were still in the Main. It will mainly be remembered for one thing - a player was DQ'd from the tournament and banned from the WSOP and the Rio Hotel for life for calling a black player a nigger at the table.

The black player was Maurice Hawkins, which should set off alarm bells if you are familiar with him. Hawkins is one of the two most successful WSOP Circuit players ever, vying with Valentin Vornicu for the record number of rings. Vornicu's back-to-back wins in May took him two ahead, but Hawkins won another at the end of May for an 11-12 deficit.

However, Hawkins is one of the most disliked players around. He constantly harasses and abuses other players. In typical fashion, he badgered Sorin Lovin all day, and others have reported that Lovin asked him to stop talking to him about twenty times. At about 2am, Lovin was speaking in Italian with a blogger and Hawkins asked him how to say "kiss my ass" in Italian. Lovin said "What's up nigger?", it all kicked off and Lovin got a two-level penalty. The following day, he was given the bans and escorted out. Seems excessively harsh.

Only one selector put Hawkins on his team, but I won't embarrass him by naming him.

So who do we fancy for Main Event Champion?

Benjamin Pollak can still make back-to-back final tables. Cliff Josephy had a great chance of another FT too, if his KK hadn't lost to Michael Dyer's AK on the river. Brian Yoon, winner of last year's Monster Stack, as well as two previous bracelets, is second. Other well-known players still going include Bart Lybaert, Shannon Shorr, Ofir Mor, Jack Duong, Yueqi Zhu and Kelly Minkin.

Debbie still has Cada in the field, looking for a second ME win. I have Pollak, 15 people have Deeb and 26 have Obst. I won't list them.

I have to stick with Pollak, though I also like Zhu. He had 10 cashes in both 2016 and 2017, but this will be his 12th this year, including one bracelet already banked.

When Negreanu scores, most people get points, but there were no big results for us as we didn't get anyone onto the final table, Tommy Le getting close for Irish Tom, but falling in 7th position.

That's another $559k in his bank for Guoliang Wei. Wei (53) has a much younger wife who had a baby six months ago.

As Mrs Merton would say "What was it that first attracted you to the wealthy professional poker player Guoliang Wei?"

Juha Helppi was runner-up in his first cash of the Series. He seems to pop into the WSOP for a bit each year, regularly chalking up a top-5 finish and maybe one other cash. Based on his wins elsewhere, I'm sure he'd have some bracelets if he came for longer. Although he gives the impression he doesn't like to exert himself much, Juha has been National Paintball Champion multiple times - mind you, that is in Finland, where the population is so low that everyone is required to be national champion in two activities, so Juha took paintball and poker.

He's only gone and done it!

Phil Hellmuth holds the record for the most WSOP 2nd places (10), but he failed to extend his lead here. What is there to say about poker's Donald Trump that hasn't been said before? Well, he's humble now, so he tells us though, like Trump, when Phil tells us how humble he is, we know it's just a matter of time til he disproves his words.

As long as I have been interested in poker, I have been reading about how bad a player Hellmuth is. People had him written off as some out-of-date old-school plodder years ago. Then he would win another bracelet, they would come up with some rationalisation for it and write him off again - then he'd win another and so on. Even this week, I was reading the same old stuff about him, and then he goes and clocks up another one. I wish I was as bad as him.

Anyway, this was a massive result, with hundreds of points sloshing around, so how has it affected the points competition? 511 points were piled up from #71, vastly more than any other event but, amazingly, not one of the top 14 players scored more than 2 points, and most didn't get any. The highest-placed selector to score the 25 was 15th-placed Paul, almost 50 points behind the lead. The Hellmuth effect has been to move a lot of middle and lower-placed people up the table, but not affect the leaders at all. Of course, this result enables another big result to bring some previous also-rans into contention but, for now, they're still off the pace.

Quite a week for Dan Matsuzuki, who won #64 and came 4th in this. It was a strong final for a $1,500, with Ryan Leng, who won #51 a couple of weeks ago, Alexander Ziskin, who has won one in the past, plus a couple of WSOP Circuit ring-winners. But it was one of the least-decorated players, Jordan Polk, who came through.

Nearly everyone got a point in this, due to Negreanu cashing, but no-one got many.

4th place for Ben Yu means he has had a 2nd, 3rd and 4th among his 14 cashes this year. So close to being a multiple bracelet-winner. The winner, in contrast, had one other cash this Summer for $619 in the Giant.

Main Event bronze medallist Jake Balsiger just missed the final table.

The Big Blind Antes experiment. Once it got to heads-up, someone was going to be a double-winner, with Volpe and Deeb both taking bracelets earlier in the Series. Only one selector had both, though, so it's a huge result for Carl.

Craig slips to 5th as Barrie moves 14 points clear of him, but Paxo, Carl & ChrisH also come past.

Note: I have confirmed that "Daniel Smith", who finished 19th, and is shown on the WSOP site as having no previous WSOP cashes, is actually Dan Smith - so that'll be one extra point for Carl, Chris, Jon, Justin & Stuart.

No, No, No!

As if things weren't bad enough! Trump, Brexit, a Chicken Song winning the Eurovision and now - Carl shoots into a sudden lead near the finishing line. And he does it courtesy of Brian Hastings. Can anything else go wrong?

Craig could have had lots of points too, but Hennigan fell just before the final.

There are still some events left, so there is still hope (which probably just makes it worse).

I can't bear to show a photo of Hastings' smug mug. Here's one of the other finalists:

Petrangelo and Elio Fox narrowly missed second bracelets of the year as Yu outlasted everyone to record 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed finishes this Summer.

Tonnes of points as this tournament beats the record for our scoringest ever, with 721 points shared out. We've never had so many players on a final table.

Suzanne included Yu and Haxton and finished with top score. Of the leaders, Barrie, Paxo and ChrisH scored big, but Craig didn't get many and Carl whiffed entirely. Actually, Craig isn't one of the leaders any more, dropping to 11th as he runs out of stamina and the field overtakes him. This result also brought Adam into late contention but the big news is that Barrie has retaken the overall lead and is now favourite to retain the title he won last year!

Debbie showed that class comes out at the most crucial time, with her late addition of Cada to her team, and was the only one to have a significant score from the Main.

Almost everyone managed to get a point or two somewhere, with 50 of the 55 teams recording a result. It would be a bit mean to identify the few who couldn't manage to do so, so I'll spare their blushes. I hope Del, IrishTom, Nic, Richard and Stuart appreciate it.

We had a lot of players scoring in this, but they were all just for one point each, with one exception. Can you spot which player I'm talking about?

Cada rounded off an already-incredible Summer by winning his second bracelet of the Series. As $1,500 events go, this one attracted a helluva lot of pro players. Maybe they had nothing else to play if they were out of the Main.

And Debbie crushed it again, showing what a good decision her Cada draft was.

The points entering the final event are as below. There have been a few small adjustments due to some one-point results missed along the way. Thanks to Vince for his help there. I spent most of tonight thinking there would need to be some major changes, as the WSOP site is showing lots of cashes for #45 which I hadn't included. After a long time, I realised that there is a screw-up on the site. The results down to position 113 are as they were before but, from 114 onwards, they are now a copy of #75. Hendon Mob is showing the results of #45 as we have them.

Barrie has a small lead that may be decisive, but it just takes one cash to overtake him. So who can win? Barrie has no players on the One Drop final table, so is vulnerable to any of the other leaders who do. Second-placed Paxo has none either, so he can't win. ChrisH has short-stacked Ivey on his team, and needs him to finish at least 3rd to snatch the win. Carl has Dan Smith, so he needs a top-two result, as well as not finishing below Ivey. None of the others near the top have enough (or any) players remaining.

At the other end, IrishTom has sewn up bottom place with a tournament to spare, as he has no-one remaining in it. Was there ever any doubt?

It's the final countdown - and we still don't know who is going to win. In fact, we don't know any of the top three positions, though we know that Barrie will fill one of them, but not which one.

There are only six players still in the tournament, and we have just three of them on our teams, so the possible results should be fairly straightforward, right? Not so - a vast number of outcomes are still possible.

We have a piece of Bonomo, Holz and Smith. Justin has all three of them, so could have a record-breaking tournament (he also has Ivey, so it could have been even more), but he can't challenge the leaders.

The current top three (Barrie, Paxo and ChrisH) don't have any players left, so are sitting ducks for the sharp-shooters below. Barrie is in pole position on 321 points, looking likely to retain his title, but Carl (currently 4th) will knock him off his perch if Dan Smith wins or finishes second. Carl is guaranteed to secure 2nd place if Smith lasts one more place and cashes in the tournament, as that will give him a minimum of 315.

If Bonomo wins and secures 25 points for his backers, Jordan will leap from 289 into 2nd place on 314, above Chris H, who is stranded on 307. Not only that, but Chris wouldn't even be 4th or 5th, because Vince and Debbie are currently on 284 and 283, so would also squeak in above him to 309 and 308. All that is dependant on Smith being next out, though, because otherwise Carl will jump over them all into 2nd and the others will all move down one place.

A runner-up spot for Bonomo would see Jordan tie with Chris for 3rd (or 4th) on 307, with Vince and Debbie slipping into 6th and 7th. Jordan will finish 5th if JB gets 3rd and 6th if Justin bags 4th or 5th. Vince and Debbie...oh, I can't be bothered.

Got all that? Simple really.

But who'd have thought that at this stage so much would still be up in the air?

Event 78: $1,000,000 The Big One for One Drop No Limit Hold'em
Winner          Justin Bonomo

Final Table          9

Player          Position          Points
Justin Bonomo          1          25

Glenn 1    25              Carl 2    15
Jordan    25              Chris K    15
Luca 1    25

After an exciting finish, Bonomo brought it home to make Barrie our champion for the second year is a row. Holz had a big lead over Smith and Bonomo when it was three-handed and extended it but, eventually, Bonomo fought his way back and Smith was eliminated, which was all Barrie need to see off Carl's challenge. The Heads-Up still mattered, though, as Jordan needed Bonomo to win to jump up to 3rd place.

It seems that this may be the last $1m event, as interest has waned and only 27 players showed up in the end, despite a few other promises (and $50k deposits forfeited). Even Guy Laliberte didn't play his own tournament.

So why aren't fewer players taking part? Firstly, Laliberte had a major falling-out with the Macau players when he refused to cover $4m lost by a player he introduced to their game, so they didn't come.

Some of the squillionaire businessmen who played before didn't take kindly to how they were treated. They know they are at a skill disadvantage but some of the professionals barely disguised that they saw them as donators. The professionals are all staked for most of the buy-in and, worst of all, they are all swapping percentages with each other "to reduce variance". The amateurs found themselves playing against a team, who were highly skilled anyway, so a lot of them didn't bother to come back. Laliberte apparently didn't tap up his mates or play himself for this reason.

And the pro players were down too, perhaps partly because the amateurs were fewer, but it seems some of them couldn't raise the staking. Most of them aren't so wealthy that they can toss in $1m on their own account.

Those professionals who did play were largely passing the money around. Sure, there is an amount being taken out of the prize-pool, but there was no rake on the tournament and they expect one of themselves to win, and others to fill most of the prize places, so they'll get it back and bump up their lifetime records etc in an artificial game. Ending Day 2 on the bubble made the situation worse, as there can't be any doubt that more business was done between the team and others before Day 3.

When the final three went on a break, the microphones picked them up discussing a deal before they were clear of the tournament area, and they concluded it quickly. It is believed they just went with ICM, giving $7.6m to Holz, $7.1m to Bonomo and $5.3m to Smith, leaving no cash to be played for - just the bracelet and the phony record. And then the cash was redistributed again, depending on their individual arrangements.

Ooh, got a bit carried away there. In short, don't expect another.

Justin posted the highest score ever achieved by a selector in a single tournament, having the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places covered. He's obviously part of the conspiracy.

For those who can't get enough WSOP Fantasy pools: I'm running the one for 2+2 this year. I've been at the WCOAP all week so should have mentioned this earlier for those who wanted to enter without the hassle of sending money via a 3rd party.
Anyway, if interested, visit 2+2 "Puzzles and Other Games".
I didn't realize you guys had a pool as well. I'm sure I'll enter this year if Paypal allows me to send pounds without too big of a fee.

Not running a fantasy pool this year? I don't see it anywhere.
The 2+2 pool is running this year for those that follow the WSOP.
