Well on Blue Square is a guy called "idrivetractors", he"s also known to his friends and family as Simon Alcock, to us he"s known as "monkeyman".

He has the most read blog on the APAT forum with over 7000 hits.  Enjoy.

The Orange Wings Hotel, Wiener Neustadt

What a fantastic establishment that housed a number of APATers during the European Amateur Championships in March 2008.  I"ll leave it to Tighty to take up the story.......

Des and Tighty do Vienna

So its 2am. One of us is frisky and up for action. One of us is longing for bed, horlicks and an early morning

We decide to take a cab back to Guantanamo Hotel as Des needs to drop his bags off

We arrive but the automated check in service has been smashed. Des gets on the blower and tries to explain to random Austrian that has a room booked and can they please send someone to fix the machine

Random drunken Scousers also have same problem, only louder and more slurred

we wait in sub arctic temperatures for the man to arrive. I have a room but decide it is politic to stay with Des

taxi arrives. drunk fella tries to hit cabbie. goes up to his room having refused to pay fare

5 minutes later police arrive. cabbie points at des. I swear des looked at me immediately. austrian police, revolvers holstered come up to talk to us. we explain the room problem. they look at smashed screen and ask to see our passports

hotel man arrives., insists I do not have a room booked despite me showing him my key

police question us about the cabbie assault, the hotel screen

we give description of the passenger. About to draw photofit of Kinboshi when suddenly they chan ge tack when they notice that Scouser has fallen asleep on floor by us and is sleep talking incomprehensibly

Police say I can go to bed. Didnt have the heart to explain that actually I had my eyes on Sonia with the tassels at the cat club and please could I have a lift?

Des gets to his room, minus key, at 5am

down to reception at 12pm to find it deserted with a piece of paper pinned to the desk with Des and my passport numbers, addresses and phone numbers

just online translated the note at the bottom

"these English men think they have rooms booked but I do not think so. Please question them"

Wish us luck tonight!!

Every night, whilst others sleep, The Duke is busy researching the world wide web (as seen above) to bring you the next "thought for today" for you to read in the morning.

Meticulous in his thirst for knowledge and wisdom, he has occasionally been known to stumble across the odd "unofficial" smiley aswell.

But we are eternally grateful for the provocation of thought brought about by his thread.

Got it working (don"t know how) and it was well worth the wait.

I hope the rest of the Micky P story is not published because season 3 just wouldn"t be the same without him. (and me phoning his house instead of his mobile at 3am probably didn"t help!)

Stuart "Sir Percival" Oliver

Stuart capped another fine APAT season by captaining the Scottish team to a silver medal position in the recent European Team Championships.

To add icing onto that cake, Stuart has just taken down the APAT Online Close Season Mini League with a back-to-back triple winning streak.

What APAT Online Close Season Mini League I hear you ask ?

Well, you don"t know what you"ve been missing.  It"s too late to knock Stuart off of his perch at the top, but the final leg of the series is on Saturday 13th December at 8pm and hosted by our season two sponsors Blue Square.

Mini League Leg 8 - 13/12/08 - Doesn"t a Bounty come in two pieces ? (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=2282.0)

It would be a shame to miss out on the best online games on blue square, played in the best spirit by the best poker people around.  Plus, there"s some added prizes.

But don"t take my word for it, read the threads from the previous 7 legs to see what the players have to say.

Leigh Wiltshire

(Neil and I, as fellow Mods, are trying to get in here first ... )

Leigh "Chipaccrual" Wiltshire

Known as "pawprint75" on BlueSq, Leigh has been unofficially voted (just by Neil and I) as "Mod of the Year" for the sheer enthusiasm this guy has for APAT.

He"s a regular on the Forum here, patroling the various boards as a good Mod should, and contributing to the various discussions.

He attended most, if not all, of the National Events in Season 2, including Vienna.

He"s finished high in the Season 2 rankings for the Online Series.

He put together the schedule and scoreboards for the Close Season Mini League, and even put up the prizes of 6 Chipsets for the Bountys.

He"s our number one "Sentry on Parade"  ;D

Jon " The British Cowboy" Woodfield

Okay, this is clearly just another opportunity to post the pic of JonMW on a horse, and has nothing to do with his comments posted about yesterday"s advent calendar,  but there is more to it, I promise you.   ::)

Jon works hard for APAT collating and publishing the rankings throughout the season.  A job which gets a lot of stick and very little applause.  So, thank you Jon.

But Jon is more than just a number collator, he plays a bit of poker aswell.  But not any ordinary type of poker, for Jon is a player of Razz.

You may or may not know that Jon cashed in the Razz event in the 2007 WSOP.  If you didn"t know, ask him about it.   ;D

Which brings me onto another APAT poker first in 2008.  During the WCOAP at The Vic, a Razz tournament was included for the first time.  Now, a lot of you may be asking yourself, "Razz, sounds a funny game, how do you play that ?"

Well, luckily for APAT, we had our allround poker expert Des at the event and he was able to explain to everyone railing on the forum, exactly what it was all about.

"In Razz players are dealt a total of 7 cards, 3 of which are face down and then rest are face up. From these cards the player has to form the lowest possible 5 card hand. Straights and flushes are irrelevant but pairs/trips/boats all count. The lowest possible hand would be A2345, which is a 5 low (as 5 is the highest card)."

So you"ve all got it, right ?

Here"s a link, so you can find out what happened during the first Razz event held in the UK.

Steve "Scouse3465" Bayliff

Steve won the Season Two APAT Online Rankings, making an incredible ten online final tables in the process.  During 2008 he also won a monthly GUKPT online league and played in the recent Champion of Champions event.

No one knows exactly where Steve gets his nickname from, as little is really known about this internet recluse.  It"s safe to say that the online style of poker suits the player in this case.  Steve won"t mind admitting that he does struggle when out in public and finds it difficult to talk to people and engage with them.

So, if during Season 3, you happen to stumble across this online legend at the bar, why not offer to buy him a drink and make him feel welcome, he may even strike up a conversation with you.  And trust me, that"s something you will never forget regret.

Well, what do we know about Daniel ?

This man is a serial poster, having posted over 2000 times on the forum, and yes, he was the one who first replied to the thread from yesterday"s advent calendar.

He is part of the APAT team and general font of all knowledge.  He was Blonde Poker team captain at the UK Team Championships in Blackpool earlier in the year.

His input into the forum on all areas of poker is appreciated and respected by all in the poker community.  (Is this taking it a bit far, I mean are people really going to believe this ?)

Oh, and according to some archive footage I have found, he won some event in season one.  Sounds sort of impressive, the way he talks about it.......   ;D  ;D

Richard "Tightend" Prew

As you can see, the only picture I could find of Tighty and he"s hard at it, as usual.  For those that don"t know Richard, he"s the one who"s not Des, if that helps ?

Tighty looks after the updates, amongst many other poker related responsibilites, and has the ability to make what can sometimes be a fairly dull session of poker into something worth reading on the forum.  In the recent APAT awards nominations, we had plenty of poeple suggesting update threads.  When asked "well, which one is your favourite ?", they were a bit stumped to give an answer other than "they are all good ?"

And it is tough to pick out any particular one.  Peoples favourites tend to be linked to whether they were playing in that tournament or had people they know playing.  So, I"ll pick out a couple that i"ve enjoyed.

APAT UK Team Championships - DAY ONE

I had my headphones on to try and drown out the live band at the G Casino, Blackpool that night.  Most of the set list got included in the update, I don"t think Tighty appreciated them very much.   ;D

APAT Irish Amateur Championship - Day Two

I didn"t make day two of this, but like most players in Dublin for the weekend, stayed around to watch the action unfold.  What makes it difficult to update at times is the physical lcoations you find yourself in.  On day one of this event, the field was spread over three rooms on two floors, tough enough, but updating on a final table from across a busy card room, with another full tournament running and a group of APATers six deep railing, well that takes some doing.

Competitive Countries

Before the European Team Champsionships had even started, things were hotting up on the forum between countries.  And the creative juices of the Scottish and Welsh teams were certainly flowing.

Of course, it didn"t work out exactly to plan for the Welsh, but the Scots managed to clinch second place, so pre-tournament musical team announcements for the win in 2009.

Gordon "Gimac" McArthur

Gordon has had a great season with APAT.  He was runner-up in the Northern Regional division, he was part of the Scottish team that were runners-up in the European Team Championships, even with him dressed in a kilt.  Gordon has been described as one of the best APAT players not to have won a National Event.  So, where does it go wrong for Gordon ?   Well, I think I have the answer, but you"ll need to see the bigger picture to fully understand.

A lack of concentration on his game is clearly in evidence here.  If you are still trying to find him in the photo, he"s in the bottom left corner.  That"s it, move your eyes to the left, a bit more, now down a bit, and you"ve found him.   ;D

Hope Des doesn"t mind me leaking Season 3 plans early ?

Des "APAT" Duffy

Where do I start ?

Des has a passion for poker, the players and making sure APAT is done right.  If you don"t believe me, make time to talk to him at the next APAT event you are at, because I guarantee he will make time to talk to you.

Bear in mind though he will be running around with video camera in one hand, digital camera over his shoulder, giving the National trophy and medals a quick polish and rumour has it even stepping out back to prepare the buffet. (Is there no end to this man"s talent)

Well apparentely there is, as if you are looking for him, I suggest you don"t bother searching near the bar.   ;D

You must be prepared for his post-tournament interviews.  They can go something like this :-

DesD: So, Player X, you"ve just gone out of the tournament on the cash bubble, talk us through your exit hand.

Player X: Well Des, I was dealt  ac kc in the big blind and the small blind made the blinds up.  We saw a flop of  9c 7c :3c: so I bet out and the small blind shoved all in.  I obviously called, although he had me covered and the small blind showed  7s :2d:.  Happy days I thought until the turn was  7d and the river was    :2h:.

DesD: Wow, that"s unlucky.

Player X: Well actually Des, my chipstack was really crippled with the hand played before that one.  I was dealt  kd kc and raised it up.  The big blind called my raise.  The flop came down  ad kh ks.  I bet out, the big blind raised.  I reraised, the big blind shoved all-in.  I call with three quarters of my stack in the middle.  He shows  ac qc.

DesD: Quad Kings, that"s fantastic.

PlayerX: It was until the turn showed  :as: and the river was  ah

DesD:  Oh, now please don"t cry.  You"ve had a good time, haven"t you ?

;D

The driving force behind APAT - without the efforts of this man, amateur poker would still be in the dark ages.

Respect, Des.

Hope you have all had as much fun reading this thread as I have in putting it together.  Keep playing the poker, supporting APAT events, drinking, and ensuring I have enough material for a 2009 advent calendar.
