Title: Vegas, Poker, my family, and random other stuff.
Post by: SirPercival on January 24, 2009, 16:24:11 PM
OK so I"ve been thinking of starting a blog for a while and thought where better than APAT?   so here we are....

Of course anyone who knows me well will be aware that I rarely do things "by the book" so in order to add a bit of spice and also to keep me motivated to write I am making this an "interactive" blog. I have no idea if this will work - you might think I"m mad - but if you don"t try......

So the idea is I post some "topics" and if you want to hear my ramblings on that subject then I will write more. If you don"t well then I just play more poker  ;D

So to get us started.

"Poker book reading list"

"How I manged to get to Vegas 5 times without the missus and how do I make it 6?"

"Online cash - a new experience"

"mid-life crisis - aka - the need to buy a sports car!"

"Stats - aka - help me understand PokerTracker3"

I have a few others but will keep them in reserve for now including:

"The day I saw the bare ars* of 2 Scottish Poker players in Brighton"

How I made it to Vegas 5 times without the missus and how do I make it 6? - Part 1

Well it goes without saying that Las Vegas is my favourite city on the planet. I'm sure a lot of you can relate to the intense experience that Vegas is and the escape from normal life that it provides. Disneyland for adults is the best description I have heard.

My first 2 visits "without the Mrs" don't really count as we didn't know each other back then. The reason she reminds me that I have been 5 times and she has never been is also to do with the fact that she lived in California as a kid. In 1977 her parents dumped her with mates where they stayed in Vista and went to Vegas for the weekend. She didn't understand at the age she was why she was missing out and here we are 32 years later and she has a husband who thinks that's incredibly funny!

So my first visit in 1994 was with an ex-girlfriend whilst touring the west coast. We stayed in Vegas for 3 nights at the Hacienda Hotel (where Mandalay Bay is now). I remember it only costing $12/night as it was midweek and I had blagged a discount due to some advert I had heard on Vegas radio on the way in.

Poker was not anywhere near as popular back then even in Vegas and I didn't play as I couldn't afford the stakes in the few games I did find. Instead I played $1 craps for about 12 hours and drank a (free) bottle of beer each time I threw the dice, or at least it seemed that way. We saw the usual sites and ate enough for an army.

We enjoyed our 2 days/3nights so much that after a quick trip to the Grand Canyon we decided to stop off in Vegas for one more night on the return to the coast.  Unfortunately for us we didn't realise that prices increased somewhat on Saturday nights. We returned to the Hacienda only to find the same room would cost $200 for the 1 night!

3 reasons determined why we stayed in the fleapit motel across the road (not longer there):

1. I'm Scottish

2. I was only 24 and didn't earn much money

3. I didn't care where I slept as I was going to play craps and drink the casino dry!

Thanks Duke, at least someones enjoying it.  oops is that whining again?

My recommendation now would be to pay the money and stay in a decent hotel but visit El Cortez and the like for the experience.

Quote
This place was built in 1941 and I not sure if they have decorated since ... it was a bit drab, smelly, smokey and probably completely unsafe

Erm, as I like my holiday hotels to be un-drab, nice smelling, non-smokey and most of all safe, I think I"ll pass on that one.

Interaction overload, I"m off for a lie down.

lol cool story - weird to see those beggars on streets in vegas, just think they prolly flushed all they had in the casinos....note that next timne u watch big stakes online - i used to wonder how good these people were sittin at 100/200 NL games or watever (25/50 etc) and i had a great deal of respect for them - my gf assured me that they are probably only playing to get out of debt or soemthing - well lots of research later i find that for the most part shes right, guys were down like 200k and sittin at a table with 40k while i think they are poker gods lol.  how misleading appearance can be.  id HATE to be so lost in the gamble that i play with borrowed money - poker is a hobby for me, when i can afford to play high stakes, ill do it, but never with what i cant afford to lose :)  poor homeless vegasites :(

Well April was quite quiet on the poker front for me.
Only 1 live tournament in Cardiff where I never really got above my starting stack all day.
No live cash at all as I have not had any time to visit casinos.

Online was limited due to AOL problems but sorted that now with a new ISP
8 online tournaments with a $122 loss and
4002 online cash hands with a profit of $169.99

Summary of results for 2009 to end of April:

Online cash                +$133.79

Online tournaments      +$81.00

Live cash                   -£150.00

Live tournaments       +£1070.00

For those that are into PT3

Cash only
VP$IP has gone down from 24.64 to 22.77, PFR = 12.40, AF = 2.28 (12,065 hands)
For April only (4002 hands) my VP$IP was 18.34 with PFR of 12.39

I think it is this slightly tighter play that has seen my -ve turn to +ve

I will post each month on here which give me the motivation to stick at it with the grind of low stakes cash. They say only 10% of online players are winning players and my aim for this year is to be in that 10%

Comments please.

Not had much time for poker in May, mainly due to work  :( and a holiday  ;D.

Gutted to have missed 2 APAT league games and the Irish National (my favorite venue) due to my holiday but did play a tourney on the ship and have the £550 Poker Masters to look forward to next weekend as well as the APAT Scottish Online Championship on Saturday.

Summary for May
No live games (other than on cruise ship but will include that in June results)
2 online tournaments with a $70 loss and
894 online cash hands with a loss of $10.23

Summary of results for 2009 to end of May:

Online cash                +$123.56

Online tournaments      +$11.00

Live cash                   -£150.00

Live tournaments       +£1070.00

For those that are into PT3

Cash only
VP$IP has gone down to 22.41, PFR = 12.15, AF = 2.28 (12,959 hands)

I will continue to post each month on here which gives me the motivation to stick at it with the grind of low stakes cash. They say only 10% of online players are winning players and my aim for this year is to be in that 10%

Not only have I had no time to update this, I"ve also not been playing much poker recently.

Anyway, I have had a fantastic holiday at the end of May start of June which was 1 week in Orlando and 1 week on a cruise. So 1 poker tourney on the ship.

I also had the no so nice experience of running QQ into AA at the Coral British Masters £500 main event so apologies to any of my backers who are reading this.  :-[

Anyway, the tourney on the Ship was basically a DS with 1 tournament each day with 1 or 2 (depending on numbers) going through to the final on the last day.

1st prize -  a Caribbean cruise for 2
2nd prize - sod all

So here"s the quiz:

1. Guess which position I came

2. Guess my exit hand

3. Guess the villians hand

1. As there is a Q2 and Q3, I"ll go for second?
2a) QQ b) AA c) AJ (LOL)
3a) AA b) QQ (won with a rivered Q or flush / straight c) AJ as well but he rivered a flush

Still doesn"t make the exit hand less painful though  >:(

Last 2 games got to HU on first table, first one I"m all-in with AA and get busted by 10 10, the next one I have KQ and the board comes KQx. I get all the chips in the middle and villan turns over the dreaded AJ. 10 on the river and its all over  :(

AJ gets me again at the APAT Scottish National. Not to damaging but bloody annoying.

Hit top 2 pair with A and J on board but with 3 diamonds and a straight draw made on the river I folded to a big reraise from David Blaine losing a few thousand early on in the event. - FML!

I did win with AJ on about the 3rd hand in when my AJ hit AAJ on the flop with another A on the river.
Quad Aces and I win about 800 chips - FML!

and finally, when playing a £10 SNG with Neil Dawson he raises and I fold Q7o. He turns over AJ and asks the dealer to run it anyway. Flop Q7x and another Q on the river. - FML!

Just watched the 1973 WSOP Main Event on Pokertube over lunch.

Love the comment at the start - "Due to the extra large field the players had to be split into 2 groups"

and how come you could get odds of 50/1 on 1 player with 13 runners yet I"m 100/1 on Bluesquare to win the APAT Main Event which as 300 ?

played against Lawrence a few times as he plays alot at DTD and in Leeds, very unorthadox style but likes to apply pressure postflop rather than pre.

unlucky Stuart and keep plugging away - not sure i like the limping with A-rag though!!

Teaching my 4 year old daugther how to play variuos cards games at the moment. snap, old maid, pairs, switch (and NLHE of course ;) ).

After a while tonight she asked if she could just play with the cards, to which I of course said yes.

2 minutes later she announces to me in a very disappointed tone.

"Daddy, there are only 4 aces!"

Just got an email from DTD depositing £10 into my account as they "haven"t seen me in a while".

Chatting to bigal about it and he tells me there is a satellite to the £300 deepstack tonight at 8pm. Great, that"s a good freeroll.

Log on and try and register to find I am 66c short after converting to Euros taking into account the reg fee. Damn.

Ok, still 30 minutes to go so I take 10Euro to 5c/10c cash table and spin it up (after 15 minutes!) to 10.80

Now sitting at satelllite with 82 other players.  ;D

Remember that a lot of card rooms change their regular schedules during the WSOP.

Binions are running their "Classic" festival again, plenty of $100 - $200 events, schedule here - http://www.allvegaspoker.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11579

This is tantamount to theft. You asked for $1000 to be wired, paid a $30 fee and so should fully expect $1000 to arrive. Legitimate expectations.

What does your bank have to say? Complain to CS and if that gets you nowhere write to the ombudsman.

That doesn"t solve the immediate problem of getting you in the tourney, unless they agree to wire the missing $25 FOC.

Good Luck.

PS Played at the Aria - it"s a v nice and well run tourney with a good clock. But would like to know if they"ve cured the horrendous drains smell outside starbucks on the link from the Monte Carlo. You can"t miss it if they haven"t!

2 weeks to go until we (missus and I) are in Vegas.

Early post of tourneys forgot to take account the the Venetian will be running their "Deep Stack Extravaganza III" so decided to have a go at that on the 5th July. Also not sure why I listed the Caesars event as $190 when it should be $150.

Wish I could fit in one at the Golden Nugget too, but can"t afford the credit card (no2) shopping bill!!

Had a nice easy drive to Gatwick today. If you are ever staying at one of the airport hotels I would recommend a thai restaurant by the name of Saigon Nights.

Teaching Amanda how to play Pai Gow poker on the flight tomorrow. I can imagine it now - "what"s the proper name for curlys again?"

Highlights so far:

Deep fried Oreo"s in Ice Cream

2 x $150 tickets to Blue Man Group for $4

Poker so far:

First planned tourney was Aria which they screwed up and didnt run. Played the Planet Hollywood $70 instead. Terrible tournament but fortunately so was the standard of play so managed to get 5th (5 paid out of 45) for $194

Well the exciting news of APAT season 5 has inspired me to post on here again.

This blog used to be called "How I made it to Vegas 5 times without the missus and how do I make it 6?"

Well, trip number 6 happened - this time with the missus and what a great time we had despite the fact the only poker tourney I cashed in was the one with the lowest prize fund :(

Trip number 7 was going to be with the whole family during a tour of the West coast of USA so the blog was going to be renamed - "Vegas trip number 7 - what do the wife and kids do whilst I play poker?", but we have changed our plans and are now going to Florida for 2 weeks, staying in a villa in Orlando.

So, the working title now is as you see it, know doubt it will need to change again soon.

Now, trip number 7 is going to be with APAT.......hopefully.

I could agree to it being the highest buffet on the list as it is similar to Caesars and Rio but in recent years the "Cafe" breakfast is by far better.

I haven"t tried the Aria (that"s 2 for my list  ;D)

"The Egg and I" is unbeatable though, if you haven"t tried it then do so and I promise you won"t regret it.

OK, we"ve had some breakfast so time for poker.

Top 5 Poker rooms in Vegas (according to me - feel free to disagree)

1. Caesar"s (high rake but best all round for everything else)
2. Venetian (Would be top every time except for the fact some tables are almost on the casino floor)
3. Rio (during WSOP, not played there at other times)
4. Binions (for the nostalgia)
5. Bills Gambling Hall (for the local drunk fish)

Can"t remember its name but the place with the strip view in the Palazzo did a fine brekkie (bit pricey though)

I"d put MGM grand down as my Bill"s

Can"t disagree with Caesers and Venetian at the top (though those that have been recently will say the Aria - maybe)

Bad experience at the Aria stopped me listing it.

Went there on my last visit for a tourney that was supposed to have 200+ runners. It got 9, due to some sort of cock up on the advertising. The room for the tourney was deep inside the hotel, about a 10 minute walk from the casino. Also poorly signed.

I guess it was very new then so wrong to judge on the 1 experience but it isn"t on my top 5 until I visit again.

Interesting week after getting my shoulder Operation last Wednesday. Was probably at my lowest point for a long time over the last few weeks. Pain and lack of sleep can get to you after a while. Anyway, my positive side said it can only get better and the following is hopefully a sign that I"m right.

When APAT announced that 888 was the new sponsor for Season 5 I deposited and played a few low stakes games to get used to the software etc. Then the APAT games began and future games were in the lobby for registration. So I duly registered for everything, league games, online championships, and also $122 for the Coventry live national. Leigh then offers up the Grand National freeroll so I stick $10 e/w on the horse I got in Wayne"s APAT sweepstake. This left me with $3 in my account.   :"( Having planned to play more online poker during my time off sick this wasn"t good.

So, I get 2nd in the National. This gives me entry into 3 bunch of fives tourneys as well as some cash in my account $40 or so.   ;D

Leigh then reminds me I haven"t bought in for the individual event in Newcastle. This was due to the fact I currently can"t get showered or dressed by myself and whilst my wife is joining me for the team event she isn"t available for the weekend. However, over the days following the Op my pain is managed through drugs (and wine!) and movement is getting better so I think I will cope. This leaves me with the problem of not having enough for the $122 buy-in.  :"(

So - 2 days of grinding later I have $129. Played 6-handed SnG"s, 10 handed Double or Nothings and a bit of Push or Fold cash.  ;D

Bought into Newcastle and now have $7 in the account  :-\

But I still have 3 Bunch o Fives tourneys and a $1000 National freeroll.  ;D

Didn"t play well in 1 of the Bunch O Fives, got unlucky in another, and min cashed in another which (almost) paid for the other 2 that week. I"m now back to $3 in the account and the Online championships are at the weekend so I need $77  :-\

So last night I play the $1000 Grand National Freeroll and get 4th place for $120  ;D

This morning I buy-in for the weekend events and I have have $46 in the account  ;D

Back to the grind!!!

Got an email from eh...another site that isn"t 888poker  ;D the other day inviting me to play a freeroll.

Played it (last night) at 7pm and reached final table at 11.30pm.

1532 runners and I finish 8th for 3 whole euros.

What I don"t understand is that sites surely give away freerolls to encourage people to play there. I have never hated winning as much in all my life. I won"t be playing it again and it"s put me off the site more than attracted me to it.

Compare it to the previously freeroll where I beat about 40 players and win $120 and I know which site I"ll be playing on in future.

3rd in the Omaha tourney tonight.

An early suck out against Ger with KKxx v AAxx set me on my way.

Had a rush of cards from about 25 out and was chip leader for a while. Then went card dead with about 13 left so went into final table about 3rd/4th in chips.

Some solid players on the FT and I was generally pleased with my play. Got lucky with 887Q double suited when I got it all in on the turn drawing to both suits on a board of 4974. Hit the 7 on the river to beat his AQQJ.

Then lost an AIPF 4 handed with AJJ8 doubled suited v Andrew T"s 78KK.

Rest was pretty standard stuff (I think)

Fought through the bank holiday traffic and finally back home in Leeds after collecting the kids from Scotland.

Gutted that I couldn"t stay in Newcastle for the weekend but have some fantastic memories from the team event on Thursday/Friday.

Some of the highlights:

Premature celebration
The first SnG"s were going well for Scotland "A" and it was only me left HU with Waz. I get it all in with A9 v J6 and with no help for England on the board my teammates congratulate me on the win. I then hear the words "he"s got change". Both Warren and I thought I started the hand with most chips but we sit back down. I have 15150 he has 850. All-in blind, he wins. The next few minutes are a bit of a blur but Warren won the next 2 also so and if he wins one more its going to be 9k v 7k. I had a King, he had a Queen and my heart sank when I see the Queen on the turn, what I didn"t see was i had made my flush - thank feck for that!! Hand shake number 2 and a good laugh all round.

SnG
OK, this wasn"t a Tighty run SnG and I regretted sitting at it about 20 seconds in. We agreed 15 minutes blinds, a starting stack and a buy-in (£5). No-one however mentioned what the game was. So an irritating man started dealing Omaha - epic fail and the cards are pulled back in. Ger snr then tries dealing Omaha - epic fail and we agree to play NLHE just to make it easier!

After the volume increased a notch or two and the poker decreased I decided to bail out and start pushing all-in. Ger jnr was dealing by this point. Ger snr was on my right and shoved the remainder of his stack. I look down at 53o but stick to my decision to bail and also shove all-in. Grant on my left is getting a headache thanks to irritating man so also shoves. Then the fun starts - first of all I tell Ger he is ahead - we argue this point for some time and eventually agree a £5 side bet on who has the worst hand. I can"t repeat Gers words on a public forum as he turned over 84s and handed over £5

Then Ger jnr deals the board and tries to work out who has won what. Grant won the hand and Gers 8 beat my 5 but Ger jnr pointed out that I started the hand with more chips. So after getting a ruling from the TD (Ger jnr!) Ger snr was out and I had change - lol. Well all I could hear for the next hour was cries of "my own fecking flesh and blood ffs!"

Tighty"s Tag Team SnG (TTTSNG)
I tried to persuade MrsSirP to play this as being female does give you a significant advantage in a Tighty SnG. However she was understandably nervous and in actual fact had gotten so frustrated at the other SnG that she was currently dealing it to a finish  :D

So I team up with Mary Martin and take my seat. Now I"m not going to even attempt to explain the rules of a TTTSNG but we somehow won the first hand by throwing away trip jacks and playing 72o.  ???

I then see our huge chip lead bleeding away as Mary is penalised for "Over enthusiastic Scottish squealing"
It was all made better by seeing Andy Overton complain about only being allowed 5 seconds to make a decision. Andy, if you are taking more than 2 seconds to make a decision in a Tighty SnG then you are over analysing the game - lol

anyway, thanks to all for a great few days, my fellow teammates Ian, Grant and Chris, my fellow Scots Grant, Louis, Mary and Shug, to all the other teams, to those that arrived early for the weekend and joined us, and of course most of all to Tighty, Leigh, James and Paulie and the staff at Aspers. Cheers all - see you next time!

Was a fantastic few days Stuart, but Tightys SNG was hilarious, and tbh I NEVER drink at APATs but unfortunately for u that night I decided to get pissed and was your partner, my shrill scottish voice was severely penalised by Tighty lmao but what a laugh...how we won with 72os after throwing trip J"s away I don#t know was so funny we looked at each other in amazement lol.  Thanks for being my partner in it, and MrsSirP is lovely was a pleasure meeting her.

I"ve concluded that I"m generally rubbish at blogging. I don"t do it regularly enough, I jump from one subject to another, and I don"t write particularly well.

However I think I need to get more down on here for the record as I have loads of things buzzing around in my head and perhaps writing them down will ease the burden on my poor brain.

Vegas this year was awesome. as anyone who has read this blog before will know, it was my 7th trip, the 2nd with the missus and my 1st with any sort of group.

Highlights I may or may not blog about include:

Poker: The softest games ever. I hit 2 final tables (Venetian and Wynn) but with a slightly better run good could easily have won both

The Venetian: Simply awesome. Worth every penny (and at sub £500 for the week I didn"t think it was expensive)

The Food:
I didn"t do the burgers and beer thing, I went out of my way to find some reasonably priced quality restaurants and I"m glad I did.

The Company: Mainly in the compnay of Brendan, his wife Trisha, Andy and Debs, and on occasion some other APAT"ers, and enjoyed every minute of it.

The Wedding:
Has to be the funniest ceremony I"ve ever attended and really enjoyed the JAPAT (although I have been told off for,  in the first few hands, not taking all the chips off the guy at my starting table who had never played before) I"m just too nice!

Pai Gow: OMG!

Shopping: I didn"t do any!

You fell for that old chestnut  ;)

Sunday night I did the same in Manchester, but only coz the guy dwelt for aaaaaaaaages and everyone else was already away for their break. I gave up, told the guy I had the straight and just wanted to get at least 5 minutes of the break. Seriously ridiculous, it was 8 minutes total and only for a bet of 200 into a 350 pot FFS  :D  :D  :D

Andy would"ve been proud of this guy  :D He did that above on the turn with a 5 in his hand on a 3/4/5/8 board. I had A2, showed it to Chas who was standing behind me and told Chas to confirm to the guy that I had a straight. It was so bad lol

Well it"s that time of year where veryone starts new blogs about resolutions and the like. or in the case of this forum it might be about poker goals for the year.

I don"t really make resolutions but I do set myself goals now and then (not just at new year).

This year however I"m struggling. Is that a bad sign?

Thinking of spending all my poker bankroll on tring to satelitte into bigger events, Genting and UKIPT being my preferred options but leaving myself enough to play the APATs obviuosly.

So the Genting Poker Series is £430 for a seat, the UKIPT £770. How much do I set aside for sats?

Do I play lots of £5+£0.50 feeders into the £55 for the GPS? Surely even I could win 1/10!

Now planning on winning the second time round.

My problem will come if I haven"t one a single ticket from 10 trys. Do I keep going to even out the variance or do I give up and accept I suck at Poker?

Serious answer.

You keep going because you don"t suck at poker and you should be able to win more than one in ten I would guess (I don"t actually know what the standard is like but would be surprised if it was high enough to make this -EV for you, it"s obviously possible to run below EV for 10 games though).

Obviously just binking one of the first few is the way to go, yeah actually do that :-)

TBH Stuart, what I really hate is the River bet. What is the purpose of your bet? I can"t see you driving away any 2P hand on that board. Or are you hoping for a call from A5 or A2 (the only A"s you are beating) or a J? Check behind with your showdown hand here IMO. I"d be very interested to know why you bet there.
Title: Re: Vegas, Poker, my family, and random other stuff.
Post by: TheSnapper on January 04, 2012, 00:45:53 AM
fold pre, you have 24 bb"s and there"s a 7bb and a 14bb stack yet to act, they will likely have a wide range for shoving versus an open limp.

No point betting the river as John has mentioned and probably likewise on the turn, there aren"t many worse hands that can call a bet. Which emphasizes why you should fold preflop tbh.

Thanks for the comments and honesty guys, the reason I posted the hand is because I know I played it badly and I also know the reason why. Posting it was sort of a punishment to myself to try and stop me being so stupid in future (does that make sense?)

Looking back at the hand I know I should have folded pre and I was thinking this part way through the hand also (another error). When it came to the river all I was thinking was what could he have called my turn bet with? At the time I was more annoyed with the river call than the bet but I agree it was the bet that was wrong in the first place. I couldn"t find a timeclock and only had about 2 seconds to make a decision. This brings me to the main reason for my mistakes - I wasn"t focussed  >:(

I am struggling to focus on a "£5 online game" rather than seeing it as a route to a £430 tourney that could give me a big score. It"s like the opposite effect of playing with scared money (does that make sense?)

Posting the hand, getting slated by 2 friends, then being honest in this post has helped a lot - no mistakes tonight  ;D

oh, and the fact Ger qualified gives me hope!  :o

Fair fa" your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o" the pudding-race!
Aboon them a" ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm :
Weel are ye wordy o"a grace
as lang"s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o"need,
While thro" your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An" cut you up wi" ready sleight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin", rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an" strive:
Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
Till a" their weel-swall"d kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
Bethankit! hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad make her spew
Wi" perfect sconner,
Looks down wi" sneering, scornfu" view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
as feckless as wither"d rash,
His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash;
His nieve a nit;
Thro" bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He"ll mak it whissle;
An" legs an" arms, an" heads will sned,
Like taps o" thrissle.

Ye Pow"rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o" fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu" prayer
Gie her a haggis!

I haven"t updated this blog for a while, mainly because I haven"t played ANY poker for the last few weeks. It"s not that I don"t still love the game it"s just that I"ve been doing other stuff.

Anyway, I guess I"ve got something to get off my chest now so here goes.

I am pretty upset by some of the comments made yesterday in the online league thread, mainly by people who are uneffected by the clarification Des posted yesterday morning. I don"t have a problem with anyone expressing an opinion on any APAT issue but some of the comments were direct critisism of me (at least I perceive them that way) for stating my opinion. I am refer to the "some moaning" "rules are rules" type posts. Am I not allowed to give my opinion when I think something is wrong? Have we all just said yes that"s great Des on all previuos rulings? I think not.

I have reread each of my posts in the cold light of day and can honestly say they are all mearly expressing an opinion or asking for clarification. Maybe you refer to others and I"m just paraniod or maybe I"m too emotional about the subject to see my negative comments.

I would also like to thank all those who messaged me yesterday with there support, by text, facebook messages etc. It was much appreciated and I understand why you wouldn"t want to post on a publish forum. You know who you are - thank you.

Des and I and others had healthy debate last night on the issue and I have said from the start (it"s in the thread if you want to check) that I would support Des after his decision whatever it is. I am just grateful that Des was willing to listen to my arguments and opinion and those posting should consider this before making some of the comments they did.

I would welcome feedback but please don"t turn this thread into another debate on the same subject - that is done and we shall move on. PM me if you prefer. cheers.

The only negative comments I have read over the past day have been the queue of people looking to "shout down" those trying to have a discussion.

Stealing this from Leigh as it sums up how I feel about this

The heated debate thread which was locked ended with someone saying "try just saying thankyou - not thankyou ,, but" & "Feels like being at home with a bunch of kids"
I wanted to reply to this because I strongly disagreed.

In some respects I am a neutral in the debate because I live in North West England and was born in North West England and of course I, like all Apat members appreciate all the work which has gone into organising the league, and added value etc.
The so called "soft" or "hard" rules don"t make a scrap of difference to me.

My view was that players with strong feelings of patriotism (country of birth)  and comradeship (Luton Club) had a valid point of view, and had as much right to air their views as anyone else before the final decision was made.
The most distasteful parts of the debate to me were the "put downs" aimed at the members with strong allegiances.
It is easy to be critical when the rule changes don"t affect you. It should also be easy to see things from another person"s perspective without trying to belittle them.

Many thanks for posting this Zozzy. Heathly debate is fine but I was saddened by those saying that I should just accept something I felt strongly about and voiceing my opinion was wrong.

There have been many many things about APAT that have improved over time because of debate but for some reason some people seem to think it was wrong to debate this one?

We"ve got a chart.  Anything east of Ipswich is in Europe.  That spans as far East as Ireland...

Why Doha?  That"s the blog post surely?

Been in Qatar for a month, back here until Friday then back in Qatar until the 20th May.

Missed Mother"s Day, and Easter (which is always a family picnic)

Will be missing Daugthers 7th birthday and Wife"s birthday.

First weekend back is the Welsh National, and my wedding anniversary.

Can someone please help me find a way to get to Cardiff alive!

My gosh it"s been a while!

As some of you will know I have taken a break from poker this year due to working in the Middle East for some of it. Although I wasn"t there that much (about 2.5 months) it did mean that when I was in the UK I wanted to maximise family time and therefore the poker took a back seat.

I have played a few live events though and thanks to some generous stakers on here I even took a shot at a UKIPT. Sadly I busted a few hands before Day 2 and didn"t give a return to my backers which hurt me more than you can imagine.

I recently signed up to the APAT poker room under a new secret alias and played the bunch of 5s week 4. Managed to finish 2nd after being the bubble boy in 3 of the 5 events. Unfortunatly Leigh outed me and any advantage I had by people not knowing they were up against such a fish has now gone. It was fun whilst it lasted and it was great to have conversations with Ger about if he liked a drink or not! what struck me most about those 4 days was how great the regular APAT players were towards an "unknown". If I had been new to APAT I would have felt most welcome.

Looking forward to playing a bit more and hopefully attending more events next year although I am heading back to Qatar on the 4th January for a couple of weeks.
