Quite possibly.  Unfortunate for Richard, forced all-in and you"ve got Kings, I"d have been happy with that, even with an atc call coming.

Congrats all, poor hubby I had to hear it all from downstairs when he went out 11th :), he was very polite :D

Was going to play this and the Betfred freeroll but remembered at the last minute you can"t run both poker rooms on the same computer so managed to unregister just in time. With Richard using the computer upstairs I had to make a choice APAT or the Pokerplayer freeroll.

As I"m leading the Poker Player leader board with 30 seats available for the top 30 in the grand final in London I wanted to try and get as many points as I could.

But I"ll be there tomorrow c u all then. :)

Hi,

Leigh mentioned that the turn out for last night"s sat was somewhat poor at 78.

Coincidentally, I did not receive an email reminding me of the event, was one sent out?

I diarised the schedule when it was announced - but i guess that many would rely on the very helpful email reminders that you send.

There were 190 seats last year - have they remodelled the casino?

We got 220 players in the year prior, but there has been a shift in focus at that casino and 160 is this year"s magic number.

An hour to go until tonight"s satellite and there"s currently 50 players registered.

That"s 3 seats available + a bit of cash (what use is that to anyone  ;D )

So it is the top 10 ranked players that get the option of a seat for the Irish Championship not those that make the final table in Cardiff?

Obv might be too late for this one but again most are playing to avoid clickfest arther than satty in.

Steve,

It sure will.  I believe it took a little bit of chasing last time by APAT, but it was soon credited.

I managed to qualify last night. Not exactly clear what the process is. By the looks of it, I would assume, my seat is reserved now and all I have to do is turn up on the day and show some id. of sorts? I don"t actually have to action something?

Thanks Daz

RHABDO here ... Congrats to all who won seats in last night"s frenzied rebuy sat. After that manic 1st hour (with the #1 manic at my table = GB2Loose) the tourney was really tough. UL to the bubbler Cooste and also to LARAD. When the table folded I had been chipleader for quite a while and was so excited at the result that I immediately booked a twin for me and my poker pal Suzy666 (who won a seat on Monday) at the Future Inn. Good rates offered by phone but non-refundable. See you all in Cardiff - and GL  8).

Des - any thoughts on the structure for this event? I know you are reviewing after the late finish at Walsall, but hopefully you might be able to leave as is and give it another go, especially given the fact that there are only 160 seats for Cardiff (didn"t we have 200 last year?).

Personally I thought the structure at Walsall was spot on, and if only Walsall casino had managed to make the Sunday dinner break a little slicker, the finish would have been just after midnight.  Would be a shame to reduce the structure at this point.

I think there will need to be some element of change.  The antes need to align more with the big blind and I"m not convinced that the 500 / 1000 level is bringing a great deal.  At the end of the day, the structure needs to work for all of us, and I personally cannot take 7 to 10 additional days holiday per annum to facilitate Monday am finishes.  I would think the team are largely in the same boat.  That does not mean that a slightly changed structure would not be a great structure.  It might encourage a bit more play in the early stages also...

The antes didn"t affect me at all in Walsall.  In terms of the players, I wouldn"t change a thing.  In terms of Des, Rich and the others who make APAT possible it does need to be tweaked.

They"ll still be the best-structured £75 tournaments in the world.

totally agree with this. Cant have Des and the boys having their mondays wrecked again. It will still be a top structure for £75 buy in anyway
Title: Re: APAT Welsh Amateur Championship - Discussion
Post by: treydj on February 27, 2009, 17:48:26 PM
totally agree Des.

Just the antes need to be in the region of 1:4 of the small blind. This enduces play in itself. At Walsall some of the antes were 1:9 / 1:10, which encourages tight cagey play, ultimately resulting in an overun.

Cheers

what Treydj said, about the antes is spot on. Im looking at the structure right now and thinking about how it was in walsall when i played,

on level 6 with the SB at 200, the ante was 25 insted of the normal 50. I think that the antes should always be a 4-1 ratio of the SB if possible, this makes the game flow smoother (and it brings the slow death of the rock) as gus hansen would say.

At the 300-600 level 7. the ante would usually be 100. a 3-1 ration of the SB. This encourages people to actually get involved because there is so much more out there in the middle to steal now. An extra 1000 on a 10 handed table.

then on the next level of 400-800, the ante would usually stay at 100, bringing the 4-1 ratio back into play.

if the antes are sorted out so that they are mostly at a ratio of 4-1, then we can keep the 500-1000 (level 9) instead of the big jump.....

so there you have it. the structure is great anyway, and the best value of anywhere in the country probably for the £75, but just a tweak with the antes and it will be even better im sure..
Title: Re: APAT Welsh Amateur Championship - Discussion
Post by: AMRN on February 28, 2009, 18:01:11 PM
Remember though - the whole concept was to mirror the GUKPT structure, but with a shorter clock.

That said, I agree with decreasing the ratio of ante to SB - it needs to vary between 4:1 and 6:1.

Hey Des and Team,

The Walsall event was fantastic and I think there is only one problem.  The payout structure is crazy IMO.

I dont see how you can have prizes of the same value on a final table.  From memory I think 8,9 and 10th all got the same in Walsall and this needs to change to a standard increase.

The final table payouts are just one factor as to how a tourney should be attempted to be played.  The whole laddering up the prize money vs going for the win is a great thing of any final table however with 3 places geting the same money this is taken out of the equation.

What is the reason behind the same prize for finishing higher?
Title: Re: APAT Welsh Amateur Championship - Discussion
Post by: Jon MW on March 04, 2009, 06:47:32 AM
It was slow enough with that prize structure.

It would be even worse if there was a greater incentive to play even more passively for the ladder up.

1st place is the only payout any player on the final table should be worried about.

That seems a bit harsh Jon.

I agree that everyone should be focused on winning an APAT tourney, but if you asked anyone that cashed at Walsall if they considered themselves losers, I would be surprised if any agreed with you.

The only losers at an APAT event are those unfortunate not to be able to get a seat.  And they are not losers really, they just lost out on a great experience.  ;D

Does this mean you will be removing "2007 WSOP Razz 13/341" from your signature?

Why would anyone advertise the fact they were 12th-best loser?

My opinion for what it"s worth.

I was playing for the win at the final table. This was evident when my large stack went all-in against Steve"s large stack AK v 99. Steve won the hand and I was crippled.

At this point however there were 4 left and I was then playing for Bronze. I was well in the red zone but folding given that Noe was still playing for the win at that point. My strategy was correct in that Noe was knocked out and I secured 3rd minimum. At that point I could play for the win again.

The point I"m making is that it is too simple to say "play for the win at all times" it really depends on the circumstances at the time.

As for being a loser? I beat 202 players, WON a bronze medal, WON £1250, made some new friends, had a lot of fun, played good poker and even made it to TV. Nah - that doesn"t make me a loser!

To remind myself of the failure as inspiration to try harder.

I think what Neil is trying to say is by not having a payout structure which ladders it takes away some of the psychology of the situation and leads to people gambling cos there"s no extra jump in prizes

i see the point..u might as well come 9th if your gonna come 4th..surely then it becomes a gambling situation. one of the things i did wrong when i made the final table was to not adjust to the fact there was no ladder principle. I just then got short stacked and shoved in with rubbish!

as usual! :D

The prize structure is the worst thing about APAT imo, not that I"m gonna stop playing or anything but it could definitely be improved. If the FT is played optimally by everyone (Which I admit I wasn"t even close to in Walsall) then it should be a complete gamble fest, which given the deep stack nature of the weekend rather detracts from the brilliant blind structure.

It certainly influenced my play at  last years final table.  That and the knowledge I had a long drive home in some fairly awful conditions!  No such pressure this time around - booked into the Future Inn for Sat and Sun night.  A graduated payout structure at the final table would enhance play but would also contribute to a later finish than we already have with the current structure.  As mentioned previously people do have day jobs - and the overall tourney structure is excellent  for a £75 buy in.

I was talking to Annette a while back, and funnily enough this topic didn"t come up. Nor did Ivan Demidov, or in fact anything remotely related to this subject.

Actually I"ve completely forgotten what point I was going to make there.

Expenses should have been paid into your Blue Square account some weeks ago.

If you can double check both your poker account and sports betting account, and if nothing, then drop an email to customer@apat.com so we can follow it up.
