Title: Horse Experts ... (Aintree)
Post by: Honeybadg on March 10, 2009, 09:45:26 AM
... certainly not me (an expert) ... however I was reading the Metro this morning who made the case for the second favourite (Torphicen) in the Cheltenham @ 1.30pm.

Progressive 4 year old, won last two races in lower company - has 8 pounds on rest of field. Has won at the distance but not the course. Jumped very well.

Cousin Vinny is the favourite (unseated rider last - with some novicey jumping) - 10/3. It is a Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) but I don"t like reading that for the favourite.

Torphicen is currently 6/1 on Betfair hard to see that lasting ... not a massive bet but any thoughts?

... got a place in the first on Drumcovis which made a real mess of the 4th from home ... aside Parsons Pistol had a lot of pace but jumped terribly.

Won the second with Mikael D"H ... which made a mess of the second last ... Karabak unlucky ...

... going on What a friend - (owned by Alex Ferguson in the next)

Hard to see past Masterminded but I tempted with the 6/4 that it wins but by less than 13 lenghts.

... not got to the 4.00 yet!

Whooooa, a win and a place.   ;D

Okay, the win was obvious, but the place is a superb effort from a horse thats not run for ages.  Well pleased with that.

That surprised me a bit.  Romped it in the end.

I think I might go back to my Goodwood method of picking my runners the night before.  I tune into the morning line and have my mind changed by lsitening to the so-called "experts".

Small dent on winnings today, will post day 3 selections later.   ;D
Title: Re: Horse Experts ... (Cheltenham Festival)
Post by: Honeybadg on March 11, 2009, 18:28:47 PM
... I will try and look at this in the morning ... and not in running ... though a good day for me ...

Any thoughts on the National ...

I have been betting on Irish Invader with a view to laying (perhaps) for a free roll on the day ... starting at 109/1 ... average about 62/1 ... with most bookies 33/1 ... so when the market thickens up should be able to chop the down side.

Last year I "literally" rode the winner (Comply or Die) ... every step of the way ... brought back great memories of Papillion. I had had a good day on the earlier races so up the stakes and ended up £2k! (Woop Woop!)

Depending on the ground - Comply or Die has to have a shout to place at last - such a good jumper.

Have some of my bets sorted for tomorrow despite a fried brain:

13:30 Ring The Boss
14:05 Synchronised

14:40 Tidal Bay is the only one I feel could give Voy Por a run, but can"t bring myself to place the bet.

15:20 Torn between Fair Along and Punchestown - no bet yet

16:00 Perce Rock
16:40 Shouldhavehadthat

Have a few e/w"s thrown in for good measure on Shakervilz, Pop, Akilak & Le Duc. The kids picked Brooklyn Breeze for their e/w.

Good luck everyone!!! Fingers crossed for the lot of us.

Good choices Leigh and Laxie.

A friend of mine has told me to back ballydub, so I might have to have a go there. I think fair along is a top horse but its front running tactics are just not suited for the world hurdle IMO.

Good luck everyone

horrible day today...beating myself up for not backing cooldine, the form was there in black and white! also fancied dunguib all winter for the bumper, then decided to leave it alone as there were so many with chances (im such an idiot!)

on a big treble with master minded, kasbah bliss and voy por ustedes so they are my big hopes for tommorow... though a race fit tidal bay frightens the life out of me ( might have to have a saver)

i too wont be watching the morning line tommorow leigh!

3.20 kasbah bliss

... aside I got way-laid by the value on Ogilvy to win the golf ... I will start a separate thread for that ...

Finally made up my mind in those 2 races.  Have gone with Tidal Bay and Punchestown.

We go mad with the horses twice a year in this house...and Cheltenham is one of those times.  Should really considering watching the races at a friend"s...to stop me having more e/w"s before the day is out!  lol

To be honest Laxie, I don"t know why they don"t just uproot Cheltenham and ship it to Ireland for the week. ;D

The atmosphere is always incredibly.  As I said before, this and Glorious Goodwood are my two betting festivals for the year.  Cheltenham for the TV and I"m a member at Goodwood, so thats a weeks holiday each year sorted.   ;D

Good luck today.

Looking forward to the Eyes Wide Shut tonight ... my signature tournament at the moment ... 11pm - $50+5 - 1500 chips - 5 min levels - usually about 90 runners ...

Last 4 attempts (3rd,2nd,37th,5th) $220 in - $2000 out ... so I have 32 free rolls before back to even!

Not the most skillful event ... but great (recent) returns ...

Me and my mate are looking to have i little flutter on the horses today but the only problem is we havent a clue what to back!!!  :-\

It seems after reading this thread there is a few people who have a good idea!!!

My mate has said the fit bird on sky sports has tipped Kauto Star for the 3.20!!!

So any tips for today would be appreciated.

Still freerolling thanks to the first two days, but not by much.  Yesterday was a killer! lol  Need a good day today to make the week an overall winner.  This is what I have so far:

13:30
Simarian e/w - kid"s pick (they like huge odds...lol)
Lethal Weapon e/w
Ebadiyan - win

14:05
Sunnyhillboy - win

14:40
Browns Baily - e/w

15:20

16:00
Southwestern - e/w

16:40
Faltering Fullback - e/w

17:15
Valain - e/w

Haven"t decided what I"m doing for the Gold Cup yet and will more than likely have the odd e/w throughout the day.

Fingers crossed for the lot of us!!!

No rules as such, but obviously Blue Square sponsor APAT, so common sense prevails.

I"m starting to question my Denman choice.

Just think Kauto Star will flop.  I was stuck between Denman and Neptune Collonges.  I think too much has been taken from Denman"s last run out.

Fingers crossed anyway.

... fair play to Blue Square ... though I take the view that talking about gambling generates traffic ... which in reality is likely to be spread out ...

Aside - my mate who is having a cracking festival is going to have a "right go" at Madison Du Berlais ... about 11/1

The racing post is all over Kauto Star ... which means it will start short ...

Denman ... minor fitness doubts (as Kauto Star did last year) ... it is getting a decent price ...

denman has had a rushed prep...defo not going to win! ground going against neptune and kauto..im just not sure he is as good as he was.
really keen on barbers shop ew....step up to 3miles 2 will really suit, just think he has a chsnce of outstaying kauto up that hill!

rest of selections:
130 starluck
205 aachen
240 cape tribulation (chariot charger ew)
320 barbers shop ew
400 murphys cardinal ew
440 big eared fran (definately a pipe winner)
515 poquelin (andy stewarts best chance of the meeting)

With a parents evening last night followed by the City match I"ve had no time to pick my nags for today. Luckily I had a free period today and have now invested in the following

1.30 starluck, ebadiyan, reve de sivola (EW)
2.05 sunnyhillboy, raise your heart (EW)
2.40 Alpha ridge
3.20 Exotic dancer (EW) barbers shop (EW)

with the rest to follow once i get home

Currently have an ROI of 25% for the meeting after my late wins yesterday.

I have gone for a few trend busters today so the only selection that I really reccommend is Alpha ridge in the 2.40.

Good luck everyone. First off in 20 minutes

Zaynar annoyingly good ... to just beat Walkon (which I was on) ... I get the feeling it might become a day of 2nd places ...

Walkon ... a bit boxed in ... narrow win ... annoying.

Aachen in the next - I think I am happiest about for the day.

Star de mahaison e/w in the gold cup. 28/1 at present.

If Denman can get back back to near his best the 7/1 is great e/w value.

... GRRR Aachen tries to kick a fence over when handily placed ...

American Trilogy kicks ass ... hard to back that except for the Ruby Walsh factor ... his sixth winner of the festival ... very impressive 20/1 shot.

... let"s hope (from my point of view) same story on Kauto"s Star ...

I stuck a wee e/w on American Trilogy right before the race just because I"m a yank and was bored at the time.  GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That"s my day made now no matter what the rest do.

Meanwhile...the teens just walked in the door from school and and have made their picks of the day.  16 year old son picked Limerick Boy in the 4:00, but 13 year old daughter"s pick was a quiet giggle for me.  "Hangover.  That one HAS to be Irish.  Let me see the stats Mom."  Show her.  "Yep.  I KNEW it!  I want that one."  That"s my girl.  Sigh.  Soooooooooo, she has Hangover in the 4:40.  Dread to find out what the 11 year old will pick when she gets home in 20 minutes.

... so what are the big Grand National thoughts?

I started backing Irish Invader at 109/1 now 37/1 ... so this is my big winner.
Also on Rambling Minister 20/1 now 12/1 best ... and I think this is really my BIG TIP.

Comply or Die won big for me last year ... but has no form ... sentimental bet ... but hard to see it being any real value this year around.

Who is punting what?

Louis

War of Attrition 4 me each way at 25-1
Title: Re: Horse Experts ... (Aintree)
Post by: Swinebag on March 28, 2009, 00:01:08 AM
I have a great GN record (3 wins and a second in 4 years) but normally leave this untill final decs (missing out on value), but from what has been mentioned so far

war of attrition and comply or die seem too heavily laden
irish invader has serious stamina issues
rambling minster looks a great pick and ticks all the boxes (well done on getting 20/1 louis)
Title: Re: Horse Experts ... (Aintree)
Post by: Honeybadg on March 28, 2009, 10:24:18 AM
... when I punted Irish Invader it was with a view to lay (and take the free-roll) ... but there appears to be endless money for it ... so perhaps I will let it go and hope for good ground!

I may chop the Comply or Die bet ...

Rambling Minister ... getting pretty short now.

When I studied the form pre these bets - it didn"t appear there was an obvious choice.

I don"t really think Comply or Die has too much weight - just no form.

War of Attrition is nagging at me ... I do like it!

L
Title: Re: Horse Experts ... (Aintree)
Post by: Honeybadg on March 30, 2009, 00:41:41 AM
Irish Invader is now best priced 27/1 which seems nuts to me ... Paddy Power down to 16/1 ... all good news for me as I
can close for a hefty free roll on the day.

It does seem way to short given it"s lack of exposure over anything like the distance but does the money talk?

Really looking forward to the race on Saturday.

I dare say there will be more money for the Irish raider ... but Rambling Minister is the one for me ... best priced at 12/1
Hard to see it starting at more than 10/1.

Pondering.

War of Attrition out of the big race.

Took another proper look at this, this morning.

My Will is plenty short @ 8/1 - albeit under Ruby Walsh - Paul Nicholls defending his 0 from 40 record in the National.

Not many horses winning with 11 stone ... so I am defo binning Comply or Die (also no form).

2005 - Hedgehunter - 11 stone 1 W Mullins - R Walsh 7/1
1988 - Rhyme & Reason - 11 stone 0 D Elsworth - B Powell 10/1

Worth also noting Papillon 10 stone 12 (won easily) T Walsh - R Walsh 10/1

I cannot get excited about Butler"s Cabin.

But for the weight I would be getting involved with Black Apalachi. (E/W Value?)

So I am sticking with Rambling Minster (10 stone 9) and (stamina doubt but massively gambled on) Irish Invader (10 stone 9) ... trained by W Mullins ... the next Hedge Hunter!?

Irish Invader is now as low as 14/1 (25/1 still available and 28/1 on Betfair ... but I expect not for long)

not had a proper look at this and my record in the national is quite shocking (due to me always going for value bets)
i really like the look of 2 of nigel twiston davies". battlecry might just have the class to win this and knowhere, which i backed last year was going really well when unseating last year and is a fantastic price at 66-1

i think state of play will be my main bet though.

mind you after my cheltenham picks pls everyone ignore this post! ;D

LOL stuff really ...

Also amusing by Chilli Rose"s stearing problems ...

Most of the racing today looked more like greyhounds with bumping/barging, terrible jumping and horses that should be wide seeded ... oh well ...

My neighbour Siobhan called in about 2 races ago.  We"ve been sat having the old glass of wine whilst watching the races.

15 minutes before the off, a bit tipsy, she saw the list up and said "Put a fiver on Mon Mone".

"Ummmm, Siobhan, the horse is 100/1.  Maybe 2.50 each way would be a better idea because there"s every chance it"ll place, but sweet feck all chance it"ll win."

"OK, go on then.  2.50 each way."

So I placed the bet giggling mad at her wasted money.  Sigh.  GG WP

Laxie"s neighbour ended up blotto on 4 bottles of wine from the celebrations and Mr. Laxie had to carry her back to her own house next door.  Mrs. Laxie knew it was coming, so only had 3 glasses of wine over the course of the evening to keep said neighbour out of trouble up the village.  I"m now ready to meet Himself for a night out in the village.  Whatever about horses, forward planning for the win!  LOL
