Title: APAT Welsh Amateur Championship 2009 - Live Update - Day One
Post by: APAT on March 30, 2009, 15:41:57 PM
This weekend, journey deep into the Welsh valleys with the APAT Updating Team;  led by APAT's legendary split personality media director, Richard "Tightend" Prew.  One minute he"ll have readers in stitches with his dry witty commentary while the next, he could be launching laptops at the walls of Cardiff"s Grosvenor Casino, as witnessed by many at Grosvenor Walsall.  :D

With the tournament completely sold out, join Richard and team for updates on the fortunes of 160 runners and alternates; including defending champion Tim Magnus.

Once again APAT will be running our popular interactive competition which asks readers to name two of the finalists from three picks before the event starts.  We can only take your first attempt (which must be unedited!), but anyone achieving the task will get an option to purchase a seat for the Irish Amateur Poker Championship in Dublin ahead of the clickfest!

The prestigious Welsh Amateur Poker Championship kicks off at 2.30pm on Saturday with day one coverage live and exclusively through this thread.  Look out for news of your favourites, chip counts, video interviews and much more.

My 3 picks to final table Apat Wales are as follows:-

Darren Shallis,
Linda Iwaniak,
Rupinder Bedi.

I concede that duke3016 and Waz 1892 got in 2 of the picks first so as to avoid accusations of copying here are my reasons:-
Darren: 3 top ten positions in Apat national championships ( including a win and 4th), captain of team Cardiff ( online league) and lives 1 mile away from myself but more importantly is a formidable opponent.

Linda: having final tabled Apat national events in both 2007 and 2008 she is sure to reach a final table in 2009 so Apat Wales could be the one.

Rupinder: gala poker tour winner and several "big" online cashes including his latest which was only as recently as yesterday basically picks himself as the "player" to beat.

Post by: duke3016 on March 30, 2009, 21:06:50 PM
With a view to who will win in Cardiff, this is not a question that the strongest players want to answer. Spokespeople for APAT (the initials short for a phrase about poker or something) sat down with like people for a training session on covering the various bets. The parties are downplaying the differences between the various players. Kinfishy (OK no contest winner in 1886) AMRN recent winner (luckbox some say but I couldn't possible comment). HaworthBantam never making level 2, Duke staying sober, Sir percywhatsit trying to con the people with naff glasses, Technolog trying to blind people with orange hi viz jackets etc etc

The problems are the same, they say, however play will be similar. (I seem to find a whole lot more differences than they profess to) So different from on line, where, on stars at least, there is only one master, George stand up. However, every difference is as wide as a chasm. (Think about the debate between Chipaccrual & LukyBugur around AJ. The argument over who is right represents a significant philosophical difference, but when compared to the current system of live play, there are many similarities between the two problems. Can you imagine Lukybugur saying "there really are no major differences in our play, because we both have examined the same problem?")

One person is (mildly) claiming the mantle of change (versus experience). This reference is not lost on the APAT faithful, who have been carefully and critically watching the contest on the internet and the international news stations. But still.how will the APAT people chose? This is the challenge they face: how to help normal people make choices when the parties themselves seem reluctant to do so.

Cmon wee man one time -- LOL

I don"t want to go down the obvious Shallis/Auckland/Bedi route, but I do believe that these events are very similar to the Grand National and the best bet is each-way on those who have survived the course before.

On that basis, my three to watch in Cardiff are:

Anthony Williams
Mark Redshaw
Colin O"Prey

However, once he gets on or close to the final table, Mark will bust himself out by going all-in with 3 4 or 4 5, same as he did in Dublin & Walsall!

The players are on a ten minute break at the moment.  It looks as if the break came at just the right time for a shattered looking Leigh Wiltshire.  Leigh was one of many APAT members who had a great night in Cardiff last night.

turn Jack bet and called

River King check, bet by Steve, call by Darren

Steve has QQ

The players are on a ten minute break at the moment.  It looks as if the break came at just the right time for a shattered looking Leigh Wiltshire.  Leigh was one of many APAT members who had a great night in Cardiff last night.

Investors beware...

I took 33% of said "late night partyer". You couldn"t have issued that warning 24 hours ago ... ? pfffff!

I"m in a net cafe in Africa and am pushed for time so I don"t know how these guys are getting on but assuming they are still in (and in Matt's case actually woke up and made it to Cardiff) I"d like to wish good luck to:

Ian Brooking
James Newman
Matt Dale
Robyn Oneile
Stuart Pillinger

They all play in the Bristol and SouthWest Meetup group.

c) am inputting chip counts onto a laptop

d) Carlisle scored in the 92nd minute and

On my way into Cardiff this weekend I noticed Cardiff City"s new stadium nearing completion.

As I drove down the dual carriageway to the bay there on the vista to my left was new ground, Ninian Park right behind it and in the distance the Millenium Stadium. Quite a sight for football stadia anoraks.

I stopped the car on the hard shoulder, put the hazards on and stared into the distance, snapping the view of stands towering into the sky in front of me

I was in heaven.

and now, back to the poker

Curtis Ledger is OUT 77 into Col Oprey"s KK

Andrew Tracey and Jon MW played out a 35,000 pot

Jon raised on the button with AQ off, Andrew flat called in the bb with 10 10 and c/raised all in on a Q 10 7 flop two diamonds

Jon looked sick, but made the call, but no miracle came

Richard Rudling Smith is OUT 55 into 88 of Judi Edwards

Dan Owston was out earlier

Not a vintage comp for the Welsh to date

Adam Sharples doubles up to 21,900. He has a beard, which frankly, does not suit him. I didn"t think he was old enough to shave so his appearance looking like the lovechild of King Edward VIII (Contemporary reference there) came as a shock earlier

Andrew Tracey has exited.

A min raise, called on button, Andrew calls from big blind.

11k in pot

Flop comes A, T, 8

check, check, button bets 4k.

Andrew shoves all-in for 21k, button thinks and calls with AK.

Andrew has 6 7 os, and no help on the turn or river.

Caller 2 = mucks

He will win the BCPC "Last-longer" bet of £120.....IF Maxine McKinlay  makes the money tomorrow !

Good Luck to both Max and to Will Young who is another prospective new BCPC member. He came over and introduced himself after I was knocked-out and he had impressed me with his play during the evening session. I think this kid could be an outsider tomorrow in this tourney.

Commiserations to Steve, but he will be back.

Actually still had a (very small) handful of chips left at the end but have had to forfeit my seat due to a family illness. Had 38k going into the last hand, but suspected I wouldn"t be able to return for Day Two, so threw them in blind UTG in final hand.

So, even though the listing doesn"t show it, I have indeed made day two in every live national this season so far :)

Great updates Tighty but just for Ben"s benefit - I shoved with the new nuts (J7 suited) and got called by raggy AQo (as if...) and a weedy pair of Jacks.   No contest!  This was even more interesting cos after AQ called all in he then discovered some more chips in his pocket which had to be removed from the tournament.  In his confusion he then turned over his cards with the BB (with the Jacks) still to act. Well it was the last hand of the night and we were all hanging.  Man with the Jacks could see I was miffed at seeing the AQ and obviously thought he had me beat and with a race against the AQ it was deffo worth a call.

Having been down to one BB only an hour earlier I"m sure I"ll be just as cavalier with my chips on Day 2.  See you all later.  Judi xx
