Title: Cricket Query!
Post by: Honeybadg on July 10, 2009, 15:52:25 PM
Is there actually a Welsh cricket team?

As it is the English and Welsh Cricket Board - should the team be called England and Wales?

im pretty sure there is no national cricket team, glamorgan however play in the championship. i just think that the volume of players playing in wales wouldnt allow for a team, maybe with the game rising in wales and the national exposure to the ashes game, more kids in wales will be playing, therefore seeing one in the future.

I think the fact that glamorgan play means its the england and wales cricket board, without them it may not be

Yep there is a Welsh cricket team, I have played against them in the Minor Counties competition a few years ago. I was playing for Cumberland in the one day MCC trophy, and we won!

... right ... but they don"t compete in the ICC ... as Wales is part of England ... (apparently)

Simon Jones wins the Ashes ... for the England and Welsh Cricket Board ... but the team is called England ... weird ...

They are known as Wales Minor Counties, and you are correct in the fact that they do not compete as a nation in any ICC competitions.

... aside ... I was thinking about Pat Pocock (another great Welsh/English cricketer) ... apparently he took 6-79 vs Australia in 1968 and got dropped ... enter Monty P ...

Did you live in Cumberland?

My house in Scotland is in Dumfries and Galloway.

Aside in 1086 (Domesday Book) most of Cumberland in Scotland!

I actually live on the Yorkshire/ Lancashire border, but was playing cricket as club professional in the Lancashire Leagues around Bolton mainly, and also played a bit for Worcestershire CCC, so when that finished I ended up playing at Cumberland for 10 years. It was great fun, good cricket, good craic, and met and played with and against some of my heroes, including Derek Randall, Graham Gooch,David Lloyd, Mike Gatting, Mark Waugh, Phil Simmons, and Eldine Baptiste to name a few.

Nice Hall of Fame!

Eldine Baptiste ... forgot about him ... "quick!" (Played 10 tests - won them all!)

Funny the way these names bring back the memories ... Mike Gatting especially ... his famous black eye in "84 (via Malcolm Marshall) ... Shakoor Rana and then the intro of Shane Warne to test cricket ...

I loved watching Malcolm Marshall bowl ... terrible that he died so young ... bizarre that he played for Scotland in 1995!

The West Indian quicks were awesome, I fancied myself as a bit of a Michael Holding, but was actually built more like Marshall. Marshall was incredible, as he got older he learnt the art of bowling, and became a master of swing and seam, as well as bowling the skiddiest bouncer in world cricket!
Then there was Joel, Curtley, Wayne, Colin, Andy, Patrick, Ian, Winston,Sylvester, and Courtney to name a few. Wow how good were they!

Decided to take a trip down memory lane ... viewing the "84, "86, and "88 series England Vs West Indies.

Here are Marshall"s figures.

"84 : 24 wickets for 437 runs : Average 18.20 : Best 7-53
"86 : 27 wickets for 482 runs : Average 17.85 : Best 4-38
"88 : 35 wickets for 443 runs : Average 12.65 : Best 7-22

I forgot how ridiculous his figures were ... strike rate 46.7 balls per wicket ...

Ten test 50s with the bat ... fair play to the chief ... defo my favourite bowler of all time.

I think Richards my favourite batsmen ... I forgot he scored that 110 not out in 58 balls in St Johns (1986)

1st Innings - Holding 73 off 63 balls - Marshall 76

Then to rub it in Roger Harper bowls 12-8-10-3 ... GENIUS
