And behind door number 1 is............................

Ever wondered what Des and Tighty get upto when they are not running the very popular APAT poker weekends ?

Well, they are always hard at work, planning future events for season 4 whilst taking time out to reflect on what"s been a succesful season 3 (With a few events still to come).

And behind door number 2 is............................

A Hotel Room

Accommodation is an essential part of any APAT weekend and the logical thing to do is find someone to room with and share the costs (+ev).  It seems a simple decision, who to room with and where to book, but, get this wrong and it can have a huge impact on how your weekend may go.

Take this scenario for example that happened whilst at the APAT Scottish National Championships.  For ease, let"s call the two individuals involved Brian and Steve.   ;D

Steve takes up the story...........

My travelling companion, Brian Yates, and I were sharing a room at a small B&B about a mile from the casino. We had one set of keys which opened the front door and the bedroom door. Brian who wasn"t feeling so good left the casino early evening, and suggested I call him when I arrived back at the B&B so he could let me in. At around 11.30, feeling dead tired, I trudged the mile walk along the Glasgow Road and rang Brian"s mobile....... the conversation was along the lines of:

Brian "Hello"
Steve "It"s me. Let me in please"
Brian "I"ll throw the keys out of the window"
Steve "Don"t be a t&@t - just come and let me in the door"
Skylight window opens and Brian appears...
Brian "Here you go - catch"
Steve "Make sure you throw them far enough - mind the gutter"
Brian "Oops, they landed in the gutter"
Steve "Daft t&@t"
Brian "Sorry mate"
Steve "It"s raining, cold, and I can"t get in"

A mile in the rain to get back to the casino to find Paul McGuinness (he was staying in the same B&B). Waited til 2am for close of play and walked back with Paul. Another mile!

It was an interesting conversation next morning when Brian had to ask the old boy who owned the B&B for a ladder to get on his roof!!

Every APAT weekend seems to have an accomodation story of some sort.  Whether it"s the Orange Wings in Vienna, The Fitzwilliam Townhouse in Dublin or whatever went on with the Scottish and Irish teams in Brighton.  Most are probably not fit for a public forum.

So make your choice wisely, and if you need help, you can always try  (http://www.apat.com/images/laterooms_advert.gif)

lol, had to chuckle at that, well up to the mention of Orange Wings anyway.   :D

APAT weekends often take people into a strange twilight zone.  In Luton last week, I arrived back at the hotel at 4.30am to find my key card would not work on my door.  So I headed back to the lift on the 2nd floor on my way to reception, only to pass Tony Trippier heading the other way.  "Hi Des", "Hi Tony" - lol, 4.30am on a strange square of land, not another soul in sight and it all seemed completely normal.

Oi!  Was the one and only time I"ve ever done a room share.  It was my duty to show appreciation for the last minute acceptance of a female in a room with 3 Lads.  What better way to show appreciation than to drag him by his toes (kicking and screaming) to the nearest strip club?  In all fairness...chicka was just trying to be one of the Lads.   ;D

I wanted to add that story, but your blog stopped mid-Edinburgh.  I was waiting for you to finish it.

If I remember rightly, the quote went something like

"How much did you pay for the room lads. Wow thats good value, and it"s right opposite the casino.  Hang on, is that the cricket on the telly.  What you get Sky Sports aswell.   Kevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv !!!!!!!!!! "

WPT Poker Magazine

APAT's partnership with WPT Magazine means APAT members get to read about the APAT events on a regular basis.  Through the partnership, members will be able to subscribe to 13 issues of WPT Magazine for £11.99, a £27.01 saving on the cover price over the same period and a saving of £6.00 off the annual subscription price via WPT"s own website.

Well, here"s a christmas advent calendar special.  How about getting 13 issues of WPT Magazine for £9.99 (http://www.wptmag.co.uk/festive)

Struggling what to get someone for christmas.  This subscription seems the perfect answer.  To add that "personal" touch, why not win an APAT event next season and get your name and photo in a future publication.  They"ll love it.

A star is born

Back in August a big APAT story unfolded.  Here it is with a slight "advent calendar" twist.

Paul had been looking for a place in the WCOAP Omaha event, but had been told there was no room at the inn.  Not feeling too worried, Paul decided to head to DTD anyway and stumbled across a friendly looking innkeeper.

This innkeeper said that he knew a lot of the players and was convinced it wouldn"t take long for a space to become available and Paul would be able to settle in for the night.

And so it was proven, Paul got the second and last available extra seat and he got himself comfortable for the night.  It wasn"t your usual nativity type scene.  No donkeys or other animals, well apart from plenty of fish.

(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SpbtO8HiZnI/AAAAAAAAa1g/6h4L0zUPVAk/s288/IMG_1052.JPG) (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SpbtWJ13PqI/AAAAAAAAa2E/HHMWPN53kJM/s288/IMG_1056.JPG) (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SpbtWshV3NI/AAAAAAAAa2M/jVMrMtEpnDU/s288/IMG_1057.JPG)

And what a night it was for Paul.  He was an APAT virgin, and struck gold.  Not content with this success, he decided to come back two days later and try his luck again.  Did a deal with the innkeeper from above, and got himself a space.

Once more he was lavished with gifts of great cards and chips being donated from everywhere and he made enough to return for day two.  However, this is where it all went wrong.  He was visited by three wise men, who instead of bringing gifts, decided to take away Gold, Silver and Bronze.

(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SqQu8IldR1I/AAAAAAAAdBk/d_ZzHVScFMQ/s144/IMG_1803.JPG) (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SqQu93TudFI/AAAAAAAAdBs/eH1cLPHfz9E/s144/IMG_1808.JPG) (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KJLieIUxMJY/SqQvBhKrS4I/AAAAAAAAdCA/dU3aYfq73b4/s144/IMG_1813.JPG)

So Paul had to be content with 10th place and a bubble.

But at DTD an APAT star was certainly found and Paul went on to repeat his success in the English Online Championships.  Was there no end to the poker talents of Paul Pitchford.  Well, this is what he had to say on the whole subject.

Paul will be playing in the Champion of Champions event at the G Casino Luton on the 5th and 6th of December along with all the APAT champions from this year.

So good luck to you all, follow the thread HERE (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=4832.0)

Steve "AMRN" Redfern ended the season top of the rankings with a superb 32 points, these were made up from :-

1st - UK Amateur Championships (18pts)
10th - Irish Amateur Championshiops (9pts)
5th - WCOAP Omaha Championships (5pts)

It was a close run thing, with a couple of players battling all the way into day two of the final rankings event of the season, but Steve was able to follow representing England in the European team championships by confirming his position top of the rankings after the event in Luton.

Steve goes on to play in a GUKPT main event courtesy of sponsors Blue Square.

You remember when Fabio Cappello and Tony Blair turned up to present Charles Mason with his trophy and medal after winning the main event at APAT's WCOAP held at DTD in August ?

What, you don"t remember ?     Maybe you were tired after four days of fantastic poker, or perhaps you were focussing on Jon MW and AndrewT still playing the HORSE event.

Well it"s a good job I captured the moment for all to see.  I think the photo ranks up there with some of these other genuine photos that have appeared on the forum this year.  It"s a bit of a Tony Hart moment really, so here"s the gallery.

Just another boring Sunday

APAT member, Rob Swindells had an incredible Sunday to remember in June this year.  By a twist of fate, an injury meant he was unable to play cricket for his local side, so instead played poker and qualified for the Sunday Warm Up on Pokerstars with a $215 buyin.

A field of 3690 runners started this high profile Sunday tournament, and Rob was one of them.

Rob, who is captain of the Manchester Poker Club in the APAT Online National League, managed to battle his way through to the money and was then joined by a number of APAT railers who witnessed the rise up the prizeladder.

Rob was pretty much around average stack for most of the tournament, but with less than 100 players left, he started working through the gears.

When the tournament was down to 30 players, Rob found himself in 3rd place and perfectly positioned to make the final table.

And that he did, at around 2 o"clock in the morning.  The final table appeared to be an inexperienced one at this level and without needing to get too involved, players were getting knocked out.

An hour into the final table, Rob is heads up with Dennis2410 from Herning.  A deal is done and they play out for the win.  The luck went against Rob heads up and so he had to settle for 2nd place and $95k.  It"s a tough life.   ;D

I managed to interview Rob prior to the Scottish National Event this year as part of the podcast, you can listen again HERE (http://www.apat.com/wordpress/index.php/2009/07/14/apat-radio-show-scottish-special/)

Rob also writes a regular blog on APAT which includes his recent trip to Vegas.  You can read that HERE (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=1502.0)

And behind door number 12 is............................

Ever wondered who does the real leg work at APAT live events?  Who actually counts the two million chips in play several times over the weekend, to facilitate the popular live updates you follow here over tournament weekends.

I give you, Leigh "Chipaccrual" Wiltshire; the creator of this APAT Advent Calendar thread, Moderator, Regional Controller and captain of the APAT team for the upcoming UK Team Championship.

Leigh's a suave sort of guy who can turn his hand to anything, so I got to thinking, maybe there is more to the life of a live updater than immediately meets the eye.....

APAT PUBLISHING PRESENTS:

LEIGH WILTSHIRE IS 008 - LICENSED TO COUNT

in the Amateur Poker Association & Tour"s

G CASINO ROYALE

008 takes up the story...

Liverpool, January 2010

Working at the European Amateur Championship had been an intense operation from the outset but it was still with a heavy heart that I left Luton, bound for Southampton and some much needed rest.  As with all APAT missions, no expense was spared on the details and I was excited to find a large wooden crate in my hotel room, which housed a "titanium enhanced projectile human transport unit with indicators".

As I travelled through the English country side, I though back to the previous evening where; on celebrating the success of my mission with several Vodka Martini"s, I was lucky enough to meet and gain favour with a beautiful Hungarian updater, Natasha Feckovyou.

As the morning sunlight bathed my penthouse suite at the Days Inn, I awoke to find the beautiful Natasha sleeping peacefully beside me.  Nursing a Duke sized hangover, I packed my bags and left the room bill by her mobility device.

Just as I was about to leave the room, I noticed the flashing red light on the room"s answerphone machine.  I"ll leave that I thought.....

.....on picking up the receiver, I heard "T"s" dulcet tones redirecting me to a meeting in Liverpool, where details of my next mission would be conveyed.

Oh **** I thought.  Now what?

Despite the high-tech nature of the "titanium enhanced projectile human transport unit with indicators", I was looking forward to getting it off.  It was also quite a relief to have gotten to the port area of Liverpool; where I was to meet "T", without attracting too much attention from the locals.

Off in the distance, I could see "T" enjoying a paddle in the North Atlantic, and I wondered what treats he had in store for me on this occasion.

"008, we want you to go to Manchester and lead a crap crack APAT unit in the UK Team Championship.  Second best is no good in this one.... we want you to bring the the big old jug eared mug home."  Striking the image of Natasha from my mind, I accepted the challenge willingly.

"Bantam"s been busy in the lab" "T" said, "you"ll be needing this".

"Jesus wept! "T"" I said, what do I need a gun for?

"Forget the gun 008" he said, "take the straight flush cards, you"re up against the Black Country Poker Club and even with Redfern in the APAT team, you"ll need them."

A little over two weeks later I found myself waiting at an agreed rendezvous point but despite a cryptic text saying "soon", my contact never showed...

Despite the disappointment, some hours later I was staring my chief adversaries down, in a winner takes all final table.

First to go was Oddjob McKinlay, when my sevens cracked his pair of woops.

I continued to use charm and good wit to entice Pearly Gates Yates to put his chips into the middle...my straight flush cleverly concealed.

Now there are a number of ways we could conclude this tale, but the most appropriate would have old Pearly tabling the Royal Flush to take the chips and the glory, leaving 008 to contemplate the trip south in "that suit".   :D

Although Leigh was a focus of this post (such an easy target lol), he along with fellow Regional Controllers Neil and Ian and our other volunteer helpers like Mary, Jon, Daniel and others have contributed a huge amount to the development of APAT over the last year.  As in our story above, they don"t do it for the "chips", but this organisation just wouldn"t be what it is without them.

Tighty, Tikay and I are extremely grateful for each of your contributions, as I"m sure thousands of APAT members are also.

A big thank you to the APAT volunteers!

The European Team Champions

The 2009 APAT European Amateur Team Championship was held at the G Casino Luton and attracted international teams from twelve countries, each vying for the European Amateur Team title to succeed last year's winners Ireland.

The event was held over two days, with each of the teams comprising four players, battling it out over a series of 80 Six Max Sit & Go and Heads Up matches with points awarded according to finishing positions.

With two matches remaining France and Poland were neck and neck for the title, level on points and each had one player in the final two Heads-Up matches. If one player lost, whilst the player on the other team won, the title would be decided. In front of a huge railing section, Franck Viollett of France beat his German opponent. Now Arie Sinkewiecz of Poland had to beat England to take the event to a play off. After a tense match he achieved this, taking France and Poland into a three match heads up tie break to decide the Championship.

In a rollercoaster finish, Poland achieved the two crucial wins, to secure the 2009 European Amateur Poker Team Championship title.

It was a great two days in Luton with lots of great memories.  Cue the (new!) Des montage special........

Another Top Ranker and he"s not a Brummie

Brian "BOINGBLITZ" Yates ended the season top of the online rankings with a superb 35 points.  Brian, pictured above when winning the Irish Amateur Championships in Dublin this year, collected his online points from :-

1st - Welsh Online Amateur Championships (18pts)
2nd - WCOAP Online Championships Main Event (17pts)

You thought the live rankings were close, well that"s nothing.  The online rankings came down to the final table of the final event.  Grant Cook had already bagged 34 points with a 1st and 3rd earlier in the season.  Both Brian and Alan Armitage had already won an event and knew that they needed to match Grant"s 3rd place finish at least.

So, the WCOAP Online Main Event had gone from 150 players down to three left, and eventual winner Tod Wood was joined by both Brian and Alan.  This really would go down to the wire.  Brian eventually finished 3rd to end the rankings in joint 2nd place with Grant, whilst Brian"s 2nd place finish meant he topped the rankings by 1 point.

It was the end to an incredible season for Brian.  He became the first player to win a live and online National Championship in the same season, he represented England and finished in Bronze Medal place in the European Team Championships and then topped the online rankings.

He will be captaining his all conquering Black Country Poker Club in the UK Team Championships in January 2010.  If you haven"t heard about them, they have had an alright sort of season  ;)  I"m sure Brian would be happy to fill you in on the details.   ;D

Brian goes on to play in a GUKPT main event courtesy of sponsors Blue Square.

I interviewed Brian for the podcast after his online win in the Welsh Championships earlier this year.  You can listen again HERE (http://www.apat.com/wordpress/index.php/2009/04/02/apat-launch-member-podcast/)

His Royal Dukeness

Ger is a regular at APAT events live and online.  This season was a very proud one for him as he has been joined on the tour by his son.  Ger also has the most replied to and the most read thread on the forum.  It"s just about to register it"s 25,000th view.

When Ger started Duke attempts the Impossible (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=1515.0) he stated :-

Given that my brain cells are shrugging off their mortal coils at an alarming rate, I must be mad to start this.

I will attempt to put into words experiences that are encountered at the poker table (and off it). If I type something in within 24/48 hours of it happening I might have a chance. Also I might need to take a few notes during the action because for some obscure reason recollection after some of them is sketchy, to say the least.

Well, what has followed covers poker, growing up, the Turner Prize, drinking, Chezger homegames and his views on APAT, oh and just about everything else in between.

It truly is a great read and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.  We are very fortunate to have a number of excellent bloggers on APAT.  In my opinion, Ger happens to be right at the top of that list at the moment.

Keep up the good work.

An APAT medal

Everyone wants to win won, most want to know when it will be delivered  ;), but for those lucky few that win a medal in a live event, they get to shake a hand, have a photo, grab the medal, and take it home with them to sit pride of place and say "look people, it"s been a good weekend"

The picture above is a very special medal though.  Quite possibly, this could be the most cherished APAT medal in the world.

So who does it belong to ?

Well, it was won this year.

It is of the bronze variety.

It now lives in the "Central" part of the country with a true APATer.

Got it yet ?

Yep, it belongs to Ian "HaworthBantam" Burnett.  Regional Controller for the Central Division Online league, moderator and all round top APATer.  I don"t think I"ve ever seen a player hugging their medal with more affection than Ian did in Bolton this year.  He couldn"t stop saying "I"ve won a medal, the money was nice, but I"ve won a medal"

In your own time

Simon Auckland was starting to become the "nearly man" of APAT.  Final table after final table, but no trophy to show for it.

In season 2 he finished 9th in Scotland, 4th in Wales and 3rd in the UK Championships.  Then finally, he got the win that his consistency deserved with his win in Wales this season.

That now means that the new "nearly man" of APAT could well be John Murray.

Although John has had success as part of the triumphant Irish team in the European Team championships in season 2, his individual record shows close, but not close enough.

In season 2 he finished 5th in Wales and 6th in Ireland and this season he finished 6th in the recent Europeans.  Add to that, two other cashes and numerous day two appearances.

Will season 4 be John"s year, well we"ll find out, soon......

Where"s Tikay ?

A question that has been asked a bit lately.  Well, apart from his usual workload and keeping up his poker legend status, Tikay has been sent on a mission by Des for season 4.

Using the remaining season 3 sponsorship budget, Tikay has been scouring the globe, looking for potential venues for APAT season 4.

His quest had him searching high,

and low,

but the list of possible locations provided by Des were all getting a bit confusing for Tikay,

and one or two even made him question whether Des was winding him up,

so instead he tried out a few locations for himself,

and an old favourite, could this be a possible venue ?

If you"ve seen Tikay on your travels, feel free to post a picture to let us know about other possible venues for season 4.

In the meantime, Merry Christmas Mr Chairman, I"m sure the fruits of your travels will be revealed soon.........

What a double act

Christmas is reknowned for great performances from double acts.  Morecambe and Wise, Del and Rodney, Noel Edmonds and his christmas jumpers, but APAT has a double act up there with the best.

What Richard and Des do for APAT is quite simply extraordinary.  Their time & effort, wit & wisdom, organisation & sheer drive makes APAT tick along in what normally appears like a smooth motion from one event to another.

Well, they do that because they are not just good, they are the best.  We always say that APAT is about the players, and that is very true, but these guys work tirelessly to ensure that APAT's reputation within the poker community is as high as it can be.

I hope you both have a fantastic christmas and a successful 2010 season 4.
