Title: Aintree
Post by: ThinkerJE on April 07, 2010, 19:05:04 PM
Grand National meeting kicks off tomorrow.  Not many runners and plenty of short prices about on day one, so hopefully winners will be easier to find than at Cheltenham.

Selections to follow after study of the formbook (why do I bother???).

Tips anyone?

Not me - If I recal correctly, last year in the APAT sweep my horse got shot.

15.10 Imperial Commander
16.55 Somersby

A nice double to start the meeting off.

My selections

2.00 no selection (no value in big bucks - gutted Time for Rupert has been withdrawn. I had him at 50/1 in this meeting last year)
2.35 barizan
3.10 no selection (no value in Imperial Commander who has never won over fences at any other track than cheltenham)
3.45 baby run
4.20 safari journey
4.55 the nightingale
5.30 black jack blues

btw - apart from the national, my record at Aintree is woeful

Not had much time to study.Saying that Super Kenny sticks out for me in the 2.35,Nicky Henderson though he was going to be a truimph horse, but the ground meant he could"nt get a decent run into him before Cheltenham. He has a decent record in this race and will be a fresh horse.
Somersby has a big shout in the 4.55

Small fields and not much value around (only 2 handicaps to get stuck into), but here goes;

2.00 Big Bucks (Bouggler to place)
2.35 The favourite (probably Sanctuaire, although Barizan should go well if not knackered from the triumph)
3.10 Carruthers (race has history of upsets and has come too soon for the Commander)
3.45 Trust Fund (Van Ness to place)
4.20 Pigeon Island
4.55 Mad Max
5.30 Silverhand

Can"t back Big Buck"s at that price and with only 7 runners the place terms are rubbish too.  However Big Buck"s will win, so have had him in straight forecasts with Bouggler & Possol.

Grand National looking very tricky to predict:

Watched the morning line - bit of a weird effort to claim Mon Mome was clearly a wonder horse before the race last year.

Lot"s made of 11 stone plus runners not winning it - but with 10-5 the bottom weight not really that valid a stat"

Comply or Die ran brilliantly with 11-6 last year - Mon More 8 lbs worse off - 12 lengths ... mmm

At the moment I am with STATE OF PLAY - 5 lbs less to carry - 4th last year - maybe enough said ...

But Super Competitive ...

Grand National

As always it"s The National is a difficult field. Obviously the favorite Big Fella Thanks is one to watch as he has decent form. I think however my money will be on Black Appalachi for the win. Priest Leap is good eachway value and I"ll have a crack at him at 35"s ew. Mon Mome seems to be priced above his talent as last years winner, really one to watch as opposed to backing. Good luck everyone, except the bookies!!!

I"ve backed 4. Maljimar e/w with Ladbrokes at 40-1 as well as three at big prices on Betfair"s win only market - Palypso De Creek at 100, Joe Lively at 150 and Vic Venturi at 42

The grand national is very tricky and wide open, but I have plumped for 4 against the field;

Snowy Morning
State Of Play
Character Building
Ballyholland

Now I need to get the staking right to ensure the maximum if one of them actually wins!!!

Also like Ellerslie George at a monster price, maybe to sneak a place.
