Title: APAT Central European Championships - Live Update
Post by: Chipaccrual on May 13, 2010, 16:22:29 PM
We"re all off on a European Tour.

This weekend, APAT hits mainland Europe once more for the APAT Central European Championships and we"re planning on bringing you all the details from the Concord Card Casino in Vienna, Austria.

Technology permitting and travel plans permitting (Myself and Tighty are on the same flight), we"ll give updates, photos and witty comments on everything APAT and Austrian, live from the cardroom.  It all kicks off on Saturday afternoon.

As is becoming the norm with these updates, we"ll run a pre-tourney competition.

Hard to say exact numbers that we"ll have in Vienna, but news from the casino is very positive for a large local turnout.

So, what about the APATers that secured seats through the holding tanks.

All you need to do is select which one of them you think will last longest in the tournament this weekend, and as a tiebreaker, what position do you think they will finish ?

Here"s your choices : -

David Llewellyn - Showing good APAT form this season, could a Welshman bring home the trophy ?

Don Logan - More used to overseas cricket tours than poker tours, will he make your selection ?

Gianluca Ragusi - Our Italian APATer has the shortest journey, will that make a difference ?

Philip Tompkinson - Stockton-On-Tees skipper, massive support behind him.  Must be in the top 10 for selection ?

Gregg Keattch - Chelsea fan, so high on confidence.  Will his concentration be on the poker or the FA Cup final ?

Gerard Smyth - Possibly the best poker player named Gerard Smyth never to have won an APAT Championship ?

Paul Davis - Win it for the Mods Paul.  That is all.

Don Roberts - Can the "hammerman" go one better than at The Vic ?

Paul McGuinness - This guy invented Hi/Lo Limit Omaha without the Ace of Spades.  One to be watched.

James Grimes - Joined the forum a month ago, booked flights and hotel, now playing in Vienna (Hopefully)

Post your pick and what position you think they will finish the tournament.

The prize will be something luxurious and expensive, if Des is buying it, or whatever I can find lying around the house that is poker related, if it"s down to me to sort.

Good luck.

Paul Davis - Win it for the Mods Paul.  That is all.

Out first I"d imagine...with AQ vs A7 as has become standard for me when they bink.

I fancy the Duke to pull one out of the bag this time...and he might win the comp too!  ;D

Gerard Smyth and 10th (assuming he doesn"t win it). He"s classed as tight-passive in European company. It might just do him some good.

Big GL wishes to all but especially Phil and Paul.

Good afternoon from Vienna

THe Concord card club is a spacious venue, 40+ tables, 24 hour cash action, and generally really nice.

Players are currently registering and our lot are at the bar.

My weekend began when I arrived home from other duties at 10pm last night. By mid-night I was ready for bed, all unpacked and re-packed.

My phone rang, and the boisterous tones of a Lady In Ireland cascaded down the phone

"Ger rang" she said

My heart sank for a moment. What could this be? Volcanic Ash over Vienna, Card-room closure?

"Ger wants you to know there is a club next door to the casino, pack your credit cards"

I did not know what to say, after all I am not that type of girl.

She went on

"Ger asked the taxi driver if he could get a dance in the club and the driver said he could have anything he wanted"

So here I am, looking forward to the poker and with credit cards at home!

My tip to win this should be Ger Smyth himself but he is the Jekyll and Hyde of Poker.

Early stages of a tournament he is loose, aggressive and talented. Quite the chip getter.

At about 7pm in any APAT though he is transformed. The sixth pint of the day is usually the inflection point where loose, talented and aggressive turns into loose, donkey and aggressive and the chips disappear in a haze of burning felt to his opponents.

Could today be different?

Probably not, but I will enjoy watching.

Play begins at 3pm

Leigh is off picture taking

Venue notes

Half the tables are smoking tables, half for non smokers, you specifiy which you would like in the seat draw when you buy in

After not being able to smoke in UK public buildings for 5 years or so, I think, this is quite a shock to us as the air is thick and foggy!

There is a dealer here from Dartford, living in Vienna!

The plaque on the wall besides me displays the winners of the Austrian Poker Championships since 1997. Amongst them Simon Trumper, Pascal Perrault and Peter Roche

This venue is owned by the renowed tournament organiser Thomas Kremser, he of LNP fame, EPT TD fame etc. Superbly run if early evidence is anything to go by.

David raises with Ace Ten, gets one caller.

After a very hectic start to this tournament, things have certainly calmed down a lot this level.

Descriptions at the break from the UK players, involved the words,

Bonkers, BONKERS, and BONNNNNKKKKKKKKERS

We have 79 players left, and maybe they are starting to realise just what they are playing for.   ;)

Don Roberts is the leading visiting player with over 30,000

Earlier he was on 25,000 then down to 6,000 when his 9-7 lost to A-7 on a A-9-7 flop

Paullie D 20,000

Don Logan 11,000

I see that we have players in this comp who have travelled from Hungary, Germany, Italy and Slovenia to play

APAT is spreading. Next stop, the world.

Don Roberts news.

Don"s got AK on a flop of K K 3

Now, all he needs is some action.  In this cardroom ?

Bound to happen.  Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, a player had limped with KQ.

Turn and River bring nothing and Don"s up to 52k.

A Day In The Life of Paul McGuinness

It"s been an interesting day so far for our friend Paul.

It started this morning on his flight from Manchester to Vienna via Zurich.  On the flight ot Zurich, he met an old work colleague.  Small world hey !!

They got chatting, which carried on off the plane, and through transfers.  His new friend was going to Athens, luckily for Paul, his departure gate was just next door to the Athens one, so Paul said his goodbyes, and started to queue with the other Italians (save this for later) at the next gate.

It was a long queue, and Paul was getting desperate for a call of nature.  Not being able to wait much longer, he made the dash down the departures corridor, following the signs.  This went on for a while, until he eventually got to some toilets next to Gate 67.

Gate 67 he thought, that"s my gate ?  What a spot of luck.  He"d joined a queue at the wrong departure gate, and it was only the need for him urinate that meant he wouldn"t have missed his flight.

Anyway, Paul eventually makes it to Vienna, and after getting fleeced 40 pounds (which is odd, as we are in Euroland), Paul arrives just a little late at the Casino.

Well, his tournament didn"t last too long, partly due to the fact Paul had been rushing around, and he certainly hasn"t been feeling too well lately.

So, he decides to cheer himself up and play some cash.  Two buyins later and he finds himself at the bar with Ger and Dai.  So things are picking up.

However, Paul is not really sure exactly where he is.  For the tenth time this afternoon, he has confused Vienna for Venice.  Dai has asked him did he not think it was a bit weird that he hasn"t seen much water or any gondola"s yet ?

Even the barman is laughing at this, and I think he"s German.  Paul has now moved off of the beers, which we all think was a sensible idea and he"s made a new friend.  He"s called Jack.

On a positive note, things can only get better for Paul.  He"s rooming with Ger, and we may be stuck in Vienna for quite a while.

I"m sure further chapters of this story may well follow...............................

Don Roberts is out.

After doubling up a player when holding  qc 6c on a flop of  ac qh :2c: , oppo had an ace and Don didn"t hit, he was down to 25k.

He then lost a couple of hands and was down to 15k.

Finally pushed that stack preflop and was up against AK when he had AQ.

So, Don leaves the updating areas.  His final words to us being how tired he was and needing a good nights sleep.  He was hoping that the taxi driver would at least know where his hotel was.

To be honest, he looked totally drained after a long day of travelling and poker playing.

Even the thought of another poker tournament tomorrow didn"t seem to liven up this tired shattered man.

More Don news

From afar, we heard a shout from one of the tables.  We looked up to see Don Logan with his head in his hands.

Phil Thompkinson was railing, and he just looked away.

Don has walked straight to the bar, so Phil picked up the story.

AK v AQ.  Don had the AK.  Ace on the flop, Queen on the turn.  Don was on about 30k and all the chips went in preflop.

We are all a bit down at the moment.

We have 26 players left, we are playing down to 18 (The money) or 3am, whichever comes sooner.

Once we have our day two players, we will ask them who they are, and how many chips they have.

Apologies to anyone who"s picking up on the thread and is wondering on the lack of details.

We could provide hands.

It would go something like this.

Local 1 raise UTG to 9k.  Local 2 flats from late position.  Local 3 goes allin for remaining 43k from big blind.

Local 1 calls and Local 2 gets out of the way.

Local 1 has AK, Local 3 has JJ.

Board comes 7 8 Q    Turn   9     River  K, and we lose Local 3 in 25th place.

Down to 21 players.

That"s 3 tables of 7.

Blinds are now 2k/4k/300

A few short stacks around, but it is very tight play.  Surely this cannot be the same players that were chucking their chips around in the first six levels ?

Latest Ash Cloud News - Courtesy of Sky News

A "rapidly encroaching" volcanic ash cloud has forced part of Britain"s skies to close again, beginning another dreaded round of flight disruptions.

The ash plume is currently reaching heights of up to 25,000ft.  A no-fly zone has been imposed above parts of Northern Ireland since Saturday night after the "high density" cloud approached the province from the North West.  The restrictions apply to Belfast International, Belfast Harbour & Ronalsdway (Isle of Man) airports until at least 1pm.  The Irish Authorities have also advised of restrictions on airfields in the north west of Ireland from 7am. Dublin and Shannon airports will remain open until 1pm.  UK air traffic body Nats said while there were "no other restrictions within UK airspace" at present, it could change if the ash blows above Britain later in the day.  The Department of Transport has warned more planes could be grounded, with restrictions potentially stretching as far as Tuesday morning.

Furthermore I have picked up a brochure for tomorrow, assuming I am stranded, off to the Spanish Riding School. Bet they won"t let me have a go.

It was either that or a museum on the Hapsburgs. Off to google the Hapsburgs.

I am funking for Antigua to win today, as it would represent the first country to win an APAT event. As their sovereign is our Queen, it might also mean a trip to Buckingham Palace for Mr Duffy to present Her Maj with her trophy and medal. In 2013.

The ten euro tourney has started.

First hand I saw, 3 minutes in.

K3 gets his chips in on a 7 3 2 board against JJ.

River is another 3.

This is a 5k starting stack with 20 minute levels.

The UK boys should be fine.   ;D

General blank looks when I ask if they can put the 20-20 Cricket final on the telly. That is the downside of going European for APAT

Meanwhile, 100k each in pre-flop, board 9-4-4, 2x hearts, gerhardt bets 200k, all in from Christophe

Gerhardt tank dwell cogitate calls

Turns over 2-2

Christophe A-9 to double up

1.4m pot

Situation completely reverses

Hey guys!

This is Gerhard (the runner up from vienna). Thanks to APAT for a great tournament with a very good structure. That was real poker, not the usual, push push push after 3 hours of play.

Congrats to Christoph for playing a good tournament. Mine was fine too, I was quite satisfied with my play. Only the 22-hand was played poorly. Flop was 9 4 4 though and not A 4 4 ;-) Makes a difference imo. But still silly to lose that many chips when the best I can expect is 50:50 :(

Last hand, setup obv for Mr runngod.com ;-)

Cheers

just read this blog and i am very happy to see that this tourney is pretty famous in britain.

i d also would like to thank all the guys who cheered for my win :)

here some thoughts about the tourney:

day 1

the structure for this buy in was really really good. i guess u cant get more for this amount of money.
my tourney started out really bad. i was tired and was not in the mood for poker honestly.
the first table was VERY tight. i guess there was no one busto in the first 4 levels.
i tried to make some silly plays and got called with A high on the river as i must have had a really bad image.
i was like down to 3k in chips pretty soon i was worried to be the first to bust :(

gerhard - the runner up was at my first table too and i thought he s a pretty good player from the first hand on. at the end of day 1 and during the breaks we chatted a bit about poker. we even had a beer before going home after day 1. we didnt even think about we would play heads up the next day for 7000 euros. alltough he was one of the chipleaders after the first 11 hours of play i had just 15BB or so. and i didnt give me good chances.

day 2

the payout structure was pretty flat and with my 15bb stack and starting in the BB of course i only had 2 words in my mind: ALL IN. i think i was all in like 15 times the first 2 or 3 levels. i can remember 3 calls when the oponent had 3 outs and they all held up...one time the cutoff pushed as a shortstack and i snap called with AJs. he had KJ. it held up.
one time i was a bit lucky as i open pushed in the SB with some weak hand like Q4o....
BB also shortstacked called with some hand like A3 and i sucked out the first hand in the tourney after like 13 hours of play...
so far so good. after that hand i had like 200. with an average of 140 k or so. chipleader had like 350k i think.
at his time i d started to really like my chances cause i hate to play shortstacked. i love to be table captain and in order to be that you have to have a solid stack.
but i really didnt plan to give my new chips away so my plan at this point was grinding it up and pick up small pots against weak oponents. i thought when we are down to the final table i will think about a new strategy depending on the players and stacks and so on.

final table

at the FT there where 2 really huge stacks and i was like 5th in chips i think...there where some shortys around so i thought i dont have to get too agressieve at the beginning cause i can earn way more money by folding medium hands.
till there i was so ****in carddead it was really sick. i think i have never been so carddead in my live in a tourney.
till there....i got like KK QQ JJ AK like every orbit.
after having the 5th or 6th monster hand preflop and everybody always folded i really got pissed.
than i got my call as i pushed with JJ...TT called with less chips than me and of course the river was the fkn T.
i was down to 4 blinds or so and i thought it was over....but how do they say? a chip and a chair (i won a live tourney 2 years ago with 1 SB left when we where down to 4 by the way*g*)
after some up and down and a suckout from me where i open pushed and the guy left to me called with TT i was in bad shape with my baby ace. but as the ace hit the turn i was back with a pretty healthy stack.

down to 4 i really got in the zone. i gained more confidence and played pretty solid imho. the shortstack wasnt really good, gerhard was left to me as chipleader and left to gerhard was a russian guy who had pretty big stack. but gerhard picked on him every hand so his stack shrunk and shrunk. as i gave him the final hit with a hand very well played by me as i think. the situation was perfect to me as he had position and he was reall agressive. i hit top pair with a king kicker and let him hang himself with his pocket pair lower than the 9 by check calling till all was in the middle. after that there was the biggest pot in the tourney so far. it must have been over 1 mio chips. gerhard and me went all in on a 8 high flop on a dry board which was pretty sick cause of the shortstack in third place. as we both had 89 it was a split. pretty nice hand and it showed pretty clear gerhard and me wouldnt give the other one a single chip for free.

the shortstacked guy was out pretty soon as gerhard an me had like all of the 1,8 mio chips in play.

heads up

i hope this post doesnt get too long or boring for u but i really wanna mention the heads up battle. not only that there was 3k euros at stake in heads up play. we where 2 good players who REALLY wanted to win this match.
the chips where: gerhard: 1.2 mio - me: 700k

as i already played many hands heads up online i gave me a little edge over gerhard. i would never say i would give me an edge on a full table....maybe i would say i come close to him if i have position.
but heads up is a whole different game and i saw a little advantage for so i didnt give up at any point even as he was chipleader 3:1 most of the time. my plane for the HU play was pla a lot of small pots and be really patient cause there was much money at stake.
i asked him before starting play HU if he wants to make a deal. we had already won 2500 euros at that point. but with my HU experience i know it can really change fast expeacially with 2 agressive players like us. we both played big bluffs and wherent afraid to pull the trigger if we had the right feeling.
i suggested to take 3000 euros each and play for the remaingn 780 euros and the ticket worth 1200 euros.
he didnt agree so i wished him a good match and we played.

my stack was up and down about 500k to 900k. lots of small pots i had really good hands.....hit some monsters but didnt get payed off.

next hand was the key hand of our match. as we played a common minraise strategy preflop in the heads up i openraised A9 to 40k he 3bet 110k i called.
flop was 944. he cbets 125k and i was pretty sure to be ahead. i tried to make him think i bluff and tried to look pretty confident and 3bet 300k with just 300k behind.
we put all the money in and he had 22 so my plan perfectly work.

i was chipleader the first time and i guess we played like an hour heads up but it felt like 3 or 4.
than we talked about the deal again cause i thought just one setup for him could change everything in one hand.
he agreed now for the previous discussed deal. a few hands later there was the last hand....pretty sick heads up...pretty lucky for me.
as i had 9Ts on a 8JQ flop and we put all the money in on the flop with gerhard holding QT which he can never get away from with our history my floped nuts held up and i shipped it!

end

that was it i wanted to make it shorter at first but when u play 17 hours u got some things to tell :)
i hope u liked it and i ll follow on this blog.

thanks for the team of this tour they did a really good job.
i m looking forward to play the 1k pound event maybe in a few months.

what is it with the 20k package????? i m really curious now :)

Hello Christoph

To answer your final question;

An end of season Champions final will identify our player of the year and what a prize he or she will win.  A £20,000 APAT sponsorship package for 2011.  This event will feature the best of our players from live and online and it should prove an incredibly fitting end to a superb season.

So considering the fact you have won one of the events, It puts you in the frame to be one of the best players and you may get the chance to play for the package. (I don"t know the criteria for "best")

I don"t have any more details of the package, but I am sure someone more knowledgable than me will add to the thread  ;D

Congratulations by the way. Hope to see you at a UK event soon.  8)

Not back home yet, as I have gone to Paris for work.

Just wanted to say what a cracking weekend it has been.

Arrived Friday evening and met up with Phil TC at the airport, before getting a Taxi to the Hotel.  After a quick freshen up we headed to the casino to check out the surroundings for the next day.  Next door caught our eye, Golden Time was the name, I have been informed by one of my Austrian work colleagues this evening that this is actually a Swingers club, so much for a Sauna club !!

Phil played a bit of cash and i dabbled with what looked like Blackjack, but was actually called Concord Aces (22).  Took a bit of getting used too, but left with a profit.  Beers were had with Ger and Paulie D and Dai, before we all left for an early night so we were fresh and ready for the poker ahead.

Remainder of the guys turned up on Saturday, Paul M, Don R and Gregg, we were underway !!

First exit after 3 minutes I think and then a shout was coming on a regular basis from the tables, this was the tournament to have been that 30th Alternate, you"d have been in !!! Amazing number of limpers on a table, and amazing number of limpers who call a raise, it was wait for the nuts before betting  ;D else you were likely to be cracked !

It was a yoyo tournament for me up and down, then up, then down, down a bit further and then up again.  The locals were a good bunch of guys, lots of smiles, winks, raised eyebrows, but not much banter.  Some was had with the dealers who were excellent, all spoke good English, apart from Bill from Scarborough.

Was gutted to go out and it could have been the hand to make my tourny, unfortunately wasn"t, but with the poker gods leaning my way I could have had approx 70k and been in a good position with 30 left. Wasn"t meant to be, departed to the bar and doubled up the long lastest bet that the 8 UK guys had paid into on the 22 table.

We eventually departed after an entertaining Saturday of Austrian poker, a tremendous card room, great hosts, great dealers and some genuine nice guys and gals at the tables.

Will finish off tomorrow.  22 for the win  ;D

Gianluca finished 24th.  Now, who would have predicted that ?

Hopefully we"ll see Gianluca in Nottingham for the WCOAP.

TD  :-*, dealers, bar staff, waitresses, fantastic staff all round in fact. Do I need to say how well Rich and Leigh did as well? Well done fellas. .. even though Leigh missed that I was still in during the Sunday tournament ;) Excellently run all round IMO.

Congratulations to Christoph, well played sir, the number of times you were all in (stand up and walk away FTW) at the start of day two as well. You did excellent. To Gerhard, we chatted at the bar afterwards and I know you were disappointed but its an excellent achievement mate, well done. Hopefully see you both in Estonia.

Thanks to the other Austrian 9 who made it (dad, uncle, cousin, grandad, robin hood etc), top top craic. Throughly enjoyable. And in the end slightly gutted to have to come home. Stupid ash cloud getting hopes up ;D

See whoevers off to Estonia over there for a beer in July....

The question was asked and then answered, but no news of my prize. I would like to think it might be a buyin to the next UKIPT event, or if that is beyond the budget, then maybe a buy in to the Worlds ME at DTD? Now that would be nice! I am actually still waiting for my last Tighty prize, a APAT hat I think, maybe it"ll come with my medal! ;)

Hi everybody, sorry it"s been a while since the end of play.
Work, tiredness and bad chest have had me so as i couldn"t be bothered posting up until now. Well i say bothered i was bothered actually. Anyway, Vienna or "VENICE" depends which part of the thread you read. I have not yet had time to read this thread, so sorry if i repeat something obvious.

Great flights to Zurich and onto Vienna, although i nearly boarded plane to Venice(can you see the link Yet)?
40 Euro"s to the Concord card casino(I keep singing hotel California now everytime that place is mentioned)
12 Euro"s to hotel(shared the biggest bed i have ever seen with Duke in his exec suite) I rolled over did a cartwheel and still we never touched ;D ;D Paulie shared the taxi"s with Ger and myself.
Richard, Leigh and the staff at the CCC all did us very proud indeed. Everything flowed with such ease, just what you"d expect from pro"s and they delivered 100%
Although a smoking card room, i can say with all honesty that until i smelt my shirt the following morning it really never bothered me at all.
The food was of a vey good standard, and a big mention to Feruz behind the bar who had actually offered to show us around Vienna(nearly typed Venice then) on the Tuesday if our flights home were cancelled. How good is that?
My tourney began with me folding 22 on the very first hand after a 6 x bb raise, all my bones said call but i follow my brain and fold. Obviously to a flopped set. The betting got more aggressive and a massive river bet was folded to with 3 spades now on board, so who knows i could have lost tons there. Tons i did lose three hands later with KK, J-Q off called the raise with 2 others. Flop Q38 Q bets i raise two fold, Q calls. J on turn for 2 pair, i bet out, she calls.
I bet 1800 on rvr and 2 pr calls?(Did she think i had the set) why call? If not why not raise rvr with top 2 pair??
On it went, i hit set and bet to rvr where caller has made gutshot and i have to pay small value bet(10% of pot) :"(
This was pretty much the theme for my tourney, exit hand i push all in Q-8 on 10 9 7 flop and get called by 10-8 :P
10 on turn, JAck on rvr FTW, no a Q for two pair just to stick it both my eyes........ >:(
Onto the cash tables where i got a lot more of the same, betting to rvr and getting rvr"d by 2 pr undercards, insiders etc. Now then small ball made hands and now allow them to hit :o Decide to wait until Sunday.
Sunday sees an upturn in cash games. Play sun night tourney, being a great structure and 2.5k euros gauranteed.
I go out to Heir Ubergressive. 88 v my AK, all the money goes in on an AK3 flop, and he turns an 8...Back to cash tables. O.K. here no great shakes, profit then lost profit made profit and left level after 3 to 4 hours. At least by now i had adapted to these crazy Europeans who were actually applauding some of my let"s say weird strange and definately dangerous plays that got me paid off ::)
We had some great chats and drinking sessions filled laughter all the way, So to not yet mentioned Don, Don Phil Dai and all the others thank you for a very memorable and pleasant weekend. All the support for evryone was astounding.

Prob missed tons out here but here"s to the next one i can make.

Cheers Paul Mac
