The update from Amsterdam will start on Wednesday 7 November.
The first poster to successfully name the Masterclassics main event winner will win a £75 entry to the APAT UK Amateur Championship at the G Casino in Manchester on December 8/9.
To qualify, your post must be unedited, contain one player name only and be made before the tournament kicks off on Wednesday afternoon. Your first guess only will qualify, and deleted posts will lead to disqualification ;D Should two or more members guess the winning player correctly, a draw will be made to decide the seat winner. Good luck!

Welcome Djinn and Danafish and good luck with this assignment, which will no doubt be another odd tale to add to your live updating memoirs.
-
Thank you very much Mr APAT, it"s good to be here.
Greetings pokerfans from the Holland Casino Amsterdam! We are all set up in our makeshift curtained press cave, ready to update as far as the rather unusual press restrictions will allow.
So far spotted today are Julian Thew, eating off a heavy night at the cheapalicious Wok 2 Walk on Leidsestraat. Not spotted but I understand bought in in spite of misreading his flight"s arrival time as its departure time and therefore missing said flight is Mr Mickey Wernick. Spotted last night in the street and now listed on the player list as being Dutch is Mr Roy Brindley.
More news as soon as the tournament gets going at 3pm (2pm UK time), and photos as soon as we"re able.
-
OK! We"re set to bring you updates on probably everyone you think is playing today -the event sold out some hours ago - live from the Holland Casino in lovely Amsterdam. The new regulations regarding the press are stringent - we are not actually allowed into the poker area (i.e. between the tables) unescorted, and we need to take turns to be so escorted, so pictures and stories are mainly going to come from those lucky players nearest the rail and therefore most easily scrutinised. Lucky them!
Spotted loitering on the red carpet outside (literally):
Noah Boeken
Marcel Luske
Patrick Bruel
Nicolas Levi
Arnaud Mattern
Johnny Lodden
Mikey Tse
Simon Hennessey
Keith Hawkins
People are flooding in and it looks like the beginning of the tournament will be a bit frenzied - just logistically - as the structure of this one is one of the best around.
-
Noah Boeken to win
-
I"ll go for Johnny Lodden.
-
jonny lodden for me

Right I"ll go for J. Odman. Just because the surnames almost the same as mine.
;D
-
That was an exciting data entry style warmup for an afternoon"s updating from the rail (sigh) - please write in if you can fill out some of the players" initials we haven"t managed to, and also we welcome requests for your picks/friends/family. However, I must stress that we have no seating plan and you are going to need to give us a pretty good description if you want an unknown discovered and Updated. Sorry.
-
Well I don"t see my first choice on there so I"ll go for Pascal Perrault instead then
-
My picks for the day (not in the slightest bit based on how funny I find their names) are
Manfred Hammer
Y Dijk
J Fuchshofer
-
OK Updaters get three picks each. That"s just the way it is.
Henning Granstad
Peter Roche
Simon Hennessey (because he"s had a terrible time what with his ipod dying and running to buy a new charger and that not working and realising that it was his ipod that was dead after all - he needs a change of luck).
-
A Scandie is bound to win this one. So I"m going for Praz Bansi.
;D
-
Jan Sorensen
-
I am going to go for one of the following
I McDonald
T McDonald
M McDonald
Ronald McDonald
nailed on.
-
Jeff Kimber
-
By the way the official player list might be a little inaccurate, as I understand that a number of qualifiers have sold their seats for considerably more than their face value. It seems that people really, really want to play this excellently structured event.
-
praz banzi
-
I"m going to
bok pick Ramzi Jelassi, partly on poker playing ability and partly because he hillariously got under Phil Hellmuth"s skin at the WSOPE.
-
Seeing as Mr Slotboom ain"t playing i shall go for Andy Black.
-
don"t know if i"m too late for the competition here but i"m going on a random basis and picking
O De Zeeuw
C"mon O de Z!
-
Alex Kravchenko is my pick.
-
Right - the four chambers through which the tournament is spread, warren-like are scoured for familiar faces and big early stacks - and I am afraid hands are going to be thin on the ground for a little while as we are not allowed in next to the tables.
Quite a few which didn"t seem to make the list have gotten in - like Tony Bloom, JJ Hazan, Keith Hawkins, Nic Szeremeta and Rolf Slotboom. 42 tables of ten players are now in the mid to late stages of the 25/50 starting level, and there has been quite a bit of action already.
Mike Tse is one of the early action-ers who is down to just 2k after one huge early hand. It went like this:
Mike holds :as: qs and raises preflop with one caller (who checks in the dark).
Flop: qh 5s :2s: Mike bets 300 and is raised to 1,200. He re-raises to 3,600 and his opponent dwell-calls, surprising him.
Turn: 6h Mike now bets 1,200 and gets another dwell-call combo.
River: Qd The Opponent now bets a chunky 4k, and Mike reluctantly calls, only to be shown the 5d 5c for the boat.
-
Meanwhile Jerome Bradpiece only just got shown to his seat (in the most inaccessible nook of the outer ring of the balcony with no access whatsoever, unfortunately), due to having lost his entry ticket. About a third of level one was spent (sort of ) patiently waiting ringside by Mr. Bradpiece who finalled in this event last year before going on to storm the Walsall GUKPT event. He tried, "Don"t you remember me?" on the harried staff, who didn"t. "But I wore the same f***ing cap!" he remonstrated, only to completely fail to impress the floor staff.
"I"m going to be doing a Hellmuth," he resignedly said as he continued to wait.
Meanwhile a sleeping-in Praz Bansi has arrived, just now, although I still haven"t spotted Karl Mahrenholz. The third in the BlueSquare trio, Mickey Wernick, has the dubious honour of being seated straight away on the TV table, where it"s all lights-camera-action separated from the normal tournament areas and on a raised stage.

I fancy that Praz Banzi will go deep in this event.
I would also like to see the likes of Andy Black, Jonny Lodden, Noah Boeken, DC, Roy Brindley, Stu Fox and Donnacha O"Dea to go far.
But my fancy to take it down would be Alexander Kravchenko he had a superb WSOP.
-
Alright then so despite not being on the player list it seems my original choice still stands.
Although I"m feeling slightly less confident with this news that Mr Bradpiece may be feeling a little bit tilty. :-\
-
OK The first break is coming up and therefore our first chance to get in amongst those tables and count some chips, possibly grabbing a player or two on the way to the bar to scour for interesting information. I find the best way to do this is just to keep talking until they crack and tell you something. There"s always a chance they"ve made it up to get you to go away, but really, there"s no other option for detail here and it"s limpet-like perseverance which will add the only colour to this update. Wish us luck.
-
Alright then so despite not being on the player list it seems my original choice still stands.
Yes mine too
Rolf Slotboom is indeed playing and remains my original choice.
-
Disregard most of that previous post - they simply announced a level change to 50/100 and that there would be a break at 5pm. So chip counts delayed.
But I did see a hand on table Mehrmand/Devilfish, not between them, though. Matey1 (he"s back!) raised preflop to 350, and Matey2 called in the blinds.
Flop: 7c :3s: 5h Check-call of Matey1"s 700.
Turn: :3d: Matey2 now bets out 1,200 - called.
River: jh Matey2 checks this time, and Matey1 fires out 3,100. A bit of a dwell and call - only for Matey1 to show a pretty nice jc jd. Confident river bet, then.
I definitely know Matey1, but I am not going to put his name down yet in case I misidentify, but I believe he is British and now has a very nice stack. Another Job for the Ten Minute Break in 20 mins.
-
Here is Jerome Bradpiece shortly before taking possession of his seat.

Alright then so despite not being on the player list it seems my original choice still stands.
Yes mine too
Rolf Slotboom is indeed playing and remains my original choice.
He"s sat next to Martin Wendt, whom I nearly didn"t recognise sans enormous headphones. They appeared to be having a bit of a laugh about something - that can"t be good for Rolf"s extraordinarily weird table image...
-
How many runners?
-
How many runners?
Running at max capacity, 42 tables of ten...
420, I would guess :)

Praz Bansi -- 10,275
Nick Gibson -- 11,700

Incidentally Roman Yitzhaki fans, I saw him having to lay down his button-raised hand to a reraise earlier, although that in itself was not responsible for the loss of a third of his stack. It is mainly an excuse to post this photo.

Incidentally, I feel I should share with you that the Holland Casino is probably the most hallucinatory casino outside of Vegas that I have ever seen.
Exhibit A - Giant staircase with actual red carpet on it. Modeled today by Miss Jennifer Mason

Exhibit B - Inexplicable man in white suit and pink cowboy hat presiding over the proceedings.
Exhibit C - Some kind of Gambling Art collection on the walls, the highlight of which as far as I"m concerned is this lovely dress made out of cards.
Exhibit D - Chandelier made out of coathangers and fairy lights.
Exhibit E - the interesting lighting concept has somehow morphed Andy Black into something demonic. Look at his eyes!

What"s the prize structure, and what time are they playing through till today?
-
Funny Matey story from Mr. Bradpiece... He hasn"t really played much so far, but Matey on his table went crazy at the end of level one, like so...
Matey fires once on an 8-5-4 board - 600 - called.
Matey fires twice on an 8-5-4-7 board - 1,500 - called.
Matey fires three times on an 8-5-4-7-9 board, this time all-in for 6,500(!). Called with a set of Nines, and early bath for his A-Q. Crikey.
-
What"s the prize structure, and what time are they playing through till today?
Lots of Euros at the top, dwindling to around 10% of the field who get just over their money back. Er, they will play into the evening some time and then stop. It will probably be a multiple of 90 minutes.
We don"t know - not a lot of information coming our way, to be honest.
-
in the absense of gary jones, I"ll go for K SEVEVI
-
Some quality filler while we"re waiting for more actual access.

Ramzi Jelassi"s exit involved Kings (again; see: EPT Dublin, Jelassi, Ramzi, Kings lose1 in the Encyclopedia of Exits which I shall be publishing in the new year): This time down to around 4k he raised to 600 after a gaggle of limpers came in, and received a caller in the cutoff. The flop came 3-5-6 and he check-raised all in - up against 7-7 and the dirtiest looking out came straight away: 4. He was looking somewhat disheartened and headed, in all probability, for the airport.

There is actually a Fourth Chamber we just found up some stairs in the High Roller Niche ... here is where Karl Mahrenholz, Jeff Kimber, Noah Boeken and Nicolas Levi have been hiding, among others. Just four tables in there, but a lot of interesting play.
Just now Noah Boeken bet out 1k on a :3s: 6s 5d flop, called by the in-position Mantis.
Turn: 8s Check-check.
River: ks Noah bet 1,600 at this point, and Karl counted out the call pretty swiftly with his 8c 8d, just calling and being rewarded with a glimpse of the Dutch star"s :3d: 4h.

Thanks.

Last i heard he was on Noah Boekem table, he is wearing a balck shirt with paddypowerpoker on it and he is an ugly f*cker - any chance of an update on him next time your are in the room?
Thanks.
Hi there,
Sure, he"s in the Roller Niche - if he"s still in his seat will get him before the break.
-
Kinboshi is such an angle shooter!
Updates on the Camel pls, runs good in Amsterdam (except when I back him!! ::))
I am sorry to say he is 1.5 tables away from the rail and therefore we are unable to watch him play any hands. I can, however, verify that he is still in and must have played some considering his stack is very large but mainly made of blue 25 chips... I expect it"s around the 15k mark, but quite hard to tell anything except that he has been hoarding the old shrapnel.

Hey Dana and Djinn.....so glad you"re able to report from this event.
Can you please follow some of my favorite Americans and "one" Canadian.....
Michael Martin
Brandon Schaefer
Aurangzeb (Ozzy) Sheikh
Roman Yitzhaki
Chris Bush (Canadian)
Thanks so much....I look forward to following you all day.

Haven"t seen the rest of them yet, but Roman Yitzhaki is in a pleasingly accessible seat, right underneath the Money Wheel. He looks to still be around the 6 or 7k mark. Will do my best to find others...

We will do our very best to track your countryfolk and their Canadian neighbour... I must say that if they make it to Day Two it will all be a lot easier as they will be listed by location, and there won"t be four of them (locations, not your guys). As you may or may not have been able to tell from our picture, we know where Mr. Yitzhaki is, and I am pretty sure I know where Mr. Schaefer was sitting at the last break...
I am basically hedging here in case we can"t give you any interesting stories (this will be the case if they are sitting anywhere other than the periphery of the rooms which are off-limits to us lowly regular press people today).
Currently remaining are 346/428 players. Odds dictate most of them are still in. :) Sorry I can"t be of more immediate informative assistance.
-
Photo please? I googled it, but there are multiple bands called Creme Brulee and as far as I can see none of them look like Mr Moustache.
Sorry Dana
Creme Brulee area fictional 70"s crap band from the "Leauge of Gentlemen"
Ohhh, you mean this guy?
That"s a pretty tenuous sort of lookalikey if you ask me, but no matter! I have an excuse to post another photo of Mr Moustache himself (still unnamed, I"m afraid) as he"s just knocked out Peter Eichhardt, moving in on a qc 6c 9s flop and Eichhardt calling.
Mr Moustache - jc kc
Eichhardt - :as: ac
Turn - 7d
River - 8c
Pretty hairy there for a moment for Mr Moustache, but nothing he couldn"t handlebar.
Oh my God I need the dinner break.

Dwell of the Tourney So Far goes to Bruno Fitoussi after this hand took a few thousand from his 25kish stack...
On a flop of 6d 8c :2d: he bet out 700 (after raising preflop) and In-Position-Matey instacalled.
Turn: 7s Bruno bet out 2,000 - slightly less than insta-call, but call
River: 5s Bruno checks here, and Matey bets 1,500 - about a quarter of the pot. The ensuing dwell is what gives the suave M. Fitoussi the Prize... he says, "Two nines? I don"t believe that.." before thinking some more, asking for the pot to be spread, thinking some more and eventually saying, "I am making a bad call," making a bad call with his td ts and seeing exactly what he predicted - 9h 9d.

Chip Counts from the room which the spectators haven"t found in such numbers yet:
Mads Andersen -- 23,000
Jan Sjavik -- 13,000
Andy Black -- 6,800
Steve Jelinek -- 9,200
Julian Thew -- 18,000
Mark Teltscher -- 16,600
Pete Linton -- 23,500
Tony Bloom -- 14,150
Praz Bansi -- 13,200 (we hear this is a recovery after he ran KK into AA but only dropped his stack to Average somehow)
-
Seated on Table Andy Black is Mark Teltscher, who seems to be having some trouble stopping talking. He was really involved in an incredibly loud discussion with Mads Andersen about something completely incomprehensible when I wandered past.
Perhaps to block it out, Andy Black has donned headphones. For some reason he continues to have Demon Eyes. Please also note background norkage. Don"t tell me I don"t take care of you guys at home.

And further norkage comes in the lovely form of this lady. Her job, and that of the other half dozen or so like her in the casino, is to wander the floor, offering people candy. I love this place.

This has resulted in the unlikely sight of poker players sucking on lollipops at the tables. So very strange.

As we are about to go eat some dinner, I will leave you with the phenomenon that is Bitterballen.
Just as Jen and I were thinking a little snack might be a good idea, a lady appeared in the press room with platters of the traditional Dutch croquettes. Great, thought we, the fine people here have brought us snacks out of the kindness of their hearts, now we don"t have to queue at the bar for chips.
Jen bit into one first. Oh my God, said she. What does it taste like, cried we. Like hot, she replied, I think it"s made of gravy.
Actually we don"t know what they"re made of at all. They"re not unpleasant if you cover them in mustard, except for the texture, which closely resembles slightly meaty slime.
I spoke to my brother, a resident of Amsterdam, who informs me that a few weeks ago his Rembrandtsplein neighbourhood of the city was host to the world"s largest croquette. Here it is, along with the ones we have just eaten.

OK, is anyone else who hasn"t Googled it thinking that the "slightly meaty slime" could be the testicle of an animal ... ?
-
haha.... done the same.....Then thought better of it, as I was about to eat my tea...
-
Oh my god. I ate two of those.
Ok, after a dinner of something that was definitely not anything"s testicles, although Benjo did his best to convince us it was dog, we are now back in the press room, where it looks like JJ Hazan is OUT. Jen is getting his story even now.
-
Early elimination post dinner break in the form of an ever-upbeat JJ Hazan. Having come third in this event last year he was back for more, finding himself on a tough "mainly Scandinavian" table which put him to the test right from the start. From a high point of 12k he flopped a set of Threes on a 7c 5d :3h: board, but when his opponent re-raised his 2k bet on the 4s turn enough to set him in, he declined to call (and was shown a Six for his restraint).
Then "I went down to 4k - that was my fault," and then it was a suited A-Q which hit top pair against a K-T straight drawing. They hit, and he hit the rail.

Andreas Krause has been eliminated from the TV table...the announcement of an all in leads to 200 players pausing mid-hand and craning their necks at an often unsustainable angle to watch the plasma screens on which some of their fellow players have their last moments broadcast to the casino, and then the outside world.
Krause"s final hand: qd qh, all in preflop against an almost predictable ac kd. An Ace on the flop, and a new feature tablist is being selected...

Almost this exact logo on the back of his T-shirt is what pointed out Brandon Schaefer very handy for us updaters - he"s got around 12,450.
Also found Ozzy Sheikh, I think (he was very far away, spotted from standing on a chair next to a fruit machine until I was told not to do that any more) - he has 9,600.

I keep finding new people as they get circled into view on the edges of the rooms: Albert Sapiano "the honeyman" whose GUKPT winnings are being put to good use here in Amsterdam - on just under 10k but still in it. Also Rehne Pedersen, on 13,750 and Simon Hennessey, chip count unknown.
Mark Teltscher -- 22,000

The downstairs bit of the casino has a number of large bins in it, filled with small, shiny sachets of something. Sensing free stuff, I picked up a sachet, to discover that it was a slightly disappointing "Refreshing Towelett" apparently masquerading as a condom, or something. I guess they"re there to dissuade you from leaving the casino to shower. Most odd.

Hand from table Bansi:
Bruno Fitoussi raises in early position to 900 (blinds are now 150/300). Michael Martin (now pretty short stacked with just 4 chips - 11,00 - you work it out) flat calls. Then Praz in the small blind re-raises to 4,200 - enough to say, "I intend to commit your stacks" to both of his potential opponents, assuming the big blind wasn"t interested, which he wasn"t. Bruno then shoves resignedly for about 6k or so, Michael gets out of the way and we have a showdown...
Praz: :as: qd
Bruno: ac qc
Flop: 4c 5c 6h Everyone holds their breath...
Turn: 4h
River: jh
Chop chop.

I can totally outweird that towelett thing by the way...
While I was watching Jan Sjavik win and then lose back a few thousand on his table, I got shoved to one side accidentally by what at first glance appeared to be a man dressed as a knight (i.e. in armor). But no, it was a man wearing two large metal bins strapped to his waist, wearing a chainmail glove on one hand. Into this hand he was placing raw oysters in shell and prising them open with a knife, offering them to the crowd complete with small rack of bottles of sauce attached to a sort of breastplate, and then throwing the empty shells into the other bin. Candy girls I have seen before, oyster men...this is my first time. Dana is getting you a wonderful wonderful picture.

Hmm, not sure about the reporting of Jerome Bradpiece"s microstack, I just now saw him knock someone out, so if he was that short he"s not any more, barring last-ten-minutes disasters. Terribly sorry about the uncertainty, it"s incredibly difficult to see anything from the rail. We"re considering a mutiny and just wandering into the playing area.

Had a brief chat with Devilfish, who is still on more or less exactly his 10k starting stack after having to do annoying things like lay down a flopped set after the turn and river left four clubs on the board. He is also complaining about the smokiness of the casino. Myself, I have to say I am absolutely loving the novelty of being able to smoke a cigarette and drink a cup of coffee at the same time. This is truly the land of the free.

BREAK CHAT with your host, ME
Nic Szeremeta: "I have the mad Finn (Ilari Sahamies) on my left with about 60k and he"s raising, raising with any two cards all the time. I can"t get into a pot. He raised with K-8 offsuit, caught an Eight on the flop and after investing 7k called a guy all-in on the turn with the board reading 4-5-8-J for 17k! They guy had 4-5 suited for two pair - Jack on the river."
Rumit Somaiya: "It"s a LONG day. I just hope I don"t make any mistakes in the last hour - I"m pretty happy with how I"ve played today." He has 21,500
Jerome Bradpiece (back to 8k) lost a huge pot earlier with Aces (a hand he seems to be dealt at least once a round): raising on the button, he got the small blind calling 1,200 and check-raising all-in (10k) on the jc 5d :3c: flop. He called - his opponent held 6c 4c and it was the harmless looking :2s: on the river which took him down to 2k...
...Never fear! He only got Aces twice more, twice paid, and then some Kings and AKs which didn"t get so much action. I wonder why.
Simon Hennessey: "A big stack - possible chip leader - with over 80k just got moved to my table and has been going crazy - knocked two people out while I was getting Jerome a drink. I can"t believe I folded this..."
So what did he fold? Well, ad 5d in the small blind, he made it up after Crazy Big Stack limped preflop. A-8- 9c flop, and he check-called when Big Stack bet 2k. The turn brought the 8c - Simon bet out 2k, the big stack looked at his small stack and threw in 20k. Flush draw, said his brain, "fold" went his hand, apparently. Meanwhile a player on one of his earlier tables just wandered up to ask if he"d been correct folding Aces to Simon earlier. Yes, yes, it had been a set. "I had a feeling you were a nit." :D
-
202 players remaining - about a half hour of play left for today.

Mike Tse - about 20k.

Simon Hennessey is OUT, which I know because he came to collect his ipod charger from the press room before going home. "Queens versus Ace Queen," he kind of hysterically giggled. "He made a straight. Good for him." He nodded maniacally for a bit before heading off. Bless.

DC Finney is a scrap merchant from Birmingham. Used to play at the Rainbow. Filthy rich, dont need the money, plays the game for kicks. Can you tell Dave Finney, Shah the dealer said good luck.
-
On Table Bansi/Fitoussi I witnessed a hand involving the lovely lady previously photographed next to Praz.
She bet 500 on a :2s: ad :3d: flop, and the bejumpered gent below called. They both checked the 4h turn, and she bet 1500 on the kh river, which he duly called, as his A-Q was crushing her pocket Eights. Oops. The very next hand the same gent stole her big blind. She looks bullied, and short.

Roman Yitzhaki still around the 16k mark.
Previously unmentioned because I only just noticed him (must have been hidden on a far away table for most of today) Vampiric Vointto Rintala, as always winner of Contact Lenses Of The Day, on around 15k.

We have one minute of play remaining today. 199 players left in, average chips 21,507. When we return tomorrow the blinds will be 200/400 with a 50 ante.
-
Here"s a list of names spotted still at the tables in the last 15 minutes - probably all returning tomorrow:
Nic Szeremeta
Keith Hawkins (OUT)
Devilfish (OUT)
Alan Smurfit 20k
Mike Tse
Pete Haslam 15k
Arnaud Mattern
Paul Testud
Danny Ryan
Thomas Fougeron
Dave Colclough
Nick Gibson
Andreas Hagen
Brandon Schaefer
Ilari Sahamies 57k
Mark Teltscher
Karl Mahrenholz 22k ("I was tired of being a big stack anyway")
Rumit Somaiya
Praz Bansi 30k
Dave Finney
Jerome Bradpiece
Jan Sjavik
Johnny Lodden
Angelo Besnainou
Pete Linton
Michael Martin
And around 200 more (although I saw one go out with AK to AA on the very last hand of the night)...
We will most likely be starting at 2pm tomorrow (1pm UK time) so it"s off for as many hours" sleep as we can cram in before we do some more gentle elbowing aside of spectating hordes.
