Title: Amsterdam Masterclassics - DAY 2 - Live Update (At a glance)
Post by: Djinn on November 08, 2007, 13:02:47 PM
Welcome to Day Two of the Masterclassics €5k main event.  Nearly 200 players remaining, but there will be far fewer than that by the end of the day.

This is the At A Glance thread - info only - please feel free to request/harangue on the Interactive thread, should you so desire.

Extraordinarily, no chip counts or remaining players lists are available to any of the press currently at start of play.  You"ll know when we do.

did pete linton make day 2?  good luck wishes for him and Dave Colclough.

Yes he did, with about 12k or 30 big blinds left. Should be plenty, although at the bar last night he was bemoaning the loss of a chunk of his stack - apparently he was an early big stack yesterday. Will keep you updated, if he"s near enough the rail, or will at least check in with him at breaks.

I have to say, it seems that the tournament organisers are going out of their way to make actually reporting on the tournament difficult, which is really odd, as the press room conditions are most excellent. Very strange. Very strange place.

Well, like a special morning treat, I got 10 minutes inside the rope in the Main Room (which was enforced to the second, despite there being a juicy all in going on right in the middle).  So I know a few people"s current counts:

Mike Tse -- 36,000
Pete Haslam -- 11,425
Paul Testud -- 14,500
Arnaud Mattern -- 19,300
Nick Gibson -- 40,000
Dave Colclough -- 27,000
Rolf Slotboom -- 19,000
Bruno Fitoussi -- 8,500
Keith Hawkins -- 17,000
Johan Storakers -- 30,000
Mickey Wernick -- 38,000
Alan Smurfit -- 26,000

Also, killed by the turn and resurrected by the river was shortstack Dutch poker icon Rolf "Ace" Slotboom.  My attention was attracted by a surprisingly high-pitched noise coming from his table, as it appears he"d gotten it all in with  :as: ks against  ac  qd, and the board had come  6c 9c 4c qh.... kd and he doubled through to his current stack.  "Wooo!"

_________________

Meanwhile Arnaud Mattern faced an uncomfortable situation having raised on the button to 2,500 and found mid-position limper Paul Testud moving in for 7,225 total over the top.  He thought for a while before calling with his  kh td - and faced one of the worst case scenarios:  :as: kd.  No help and one Frenchman doubles up another.

Mark Teltscher is OUT... saw him doing the slow walk out of the downstairs room, and that was definitely the final exit type walk.  JJ Hazan has popped into the press room with some stories crossing the years of the Masterclassics, and noting the Teltscher leaving, remembered that he was responsible for knocking him out in 2006...

Incidentally, there are at least four of last year"s finalists still in this tournament.

I caught an actual hand while I was leaning over the slot machines to get some aerial photos of the main pit. After a veritable bunch of preflop raising, a flop was dealt -  :2c: :3d: 4c

Carl Hostrup bets 3k, and the gentleman in a cap makes it 6k. To which Hostrup moves in; call.

Hostrup -  :as: td

Cap Man -  8c 9c

Turn -  :2d:

River -  qs

And Hostrup doubles up, leaving Mr Cap very short. Someone at the next slot machine along from me shouts to Hostrup, "You are SICK man!" There follows some kind of odd handshaking ritual that I don"t pretend to understand. Cap Man looks as irked by this as by the loss of most of his chips.

Meanwhile downstairs, Karl Mahrenholz, currently on about 45k, is sharing a table with Johnny Lodden. Also on their table is a gent in an extraordinary 10 Gallon hat. Karl dropped a few chips to him when he raised from the button, was called by Hat Man on the small blind, and then folded when Mr Hat bet out on the  9c ah qs flop. Mr Hat obligingly showed the  ad as Karl folded.

Squinting into the distance in the downstairs room I could see Pete Linton move in before the flop, and thus steal the blinds and I think a limp too, after some considerable dwellage around the table. Have to say he looked incredibly relieved when everyone folded.

After a short argument about how much the player in question does or does not look like Christopher Lee, the ever-helpful Benjo has informed us that the cap-wearing gent who some posts back became involved with Carl Hostrup is in fact French player Eli Marciano. Thanks, Benjo!

He does look like Chrisptopher Lee.

You know when you see a player in front of one of the TV cameras that they"re on their way home (or to the cash game).  The latest stars of the small screen (i.e. eliminatees) include Rolf Slotboom, who said, of the rail, "I shouldn"t be here."  I didn"t press him for outdraw details, just congratulated him on a good week at the Festival, having come 14th in an earlier Hold'em event and finalled the Omaha for good measure.

Also OUT are Pete Haslam, Casey Kastle and a gent on Praz"s table whose shortstacked limp/call-an-all-in combo with  7s 7h found  8h 8s in the all-in player"s hand to take him out.

Nick Gibson"s had an adventurous sounding day.  It didn"t start off well, with Jan Boubli apparently re-raising him for fun all the time and dropping his starting 50k down to 25k a moment ago.  "I was his bitch," admitted Nick.  But then a hand helped him back up, when, "I tried my hardest to bust myself."  Here"s what happened:  An under the gun raiser raised, Nick made it 5,100 with  ac ks, one caller.   The flop came Six-high, perfect, and Matey bet out 6k.  "All in," says Nick - for 20k.  A very long genuine dwell ensued, at the end of which Matey called with his  qd qc!  But an Ace on the turn got Gwibbo out of jail and he"s back in the tournament in spite of himself.

Just before the break I saw Jan Sjavik take some chips off of this young lady whom we mentioned in yesterday"s update. Her name is still unknown, I"m afraid, owing to the seat she"s currently occupying being listed as empty on the seating plan. Anyway, there was a flurry of preflop raising, and then Jan checked the  5d 6c :2h: flop. Lady bet 5k; Jan called.

Turn -  6d - check check

River -  9c

Jan bets 10k and Lady passes. She has about 30k left.

Having a good day: Johan Storakers - starting today with around 30k and enjoying around 80k at the moment.  One large pot won was a three-way-er with short stack Danny Ryan moving in for 8,900, called by a French player just when Storakers had  :as: ac... he promptly shoved over the top for 25k and received a call with  tc td.  Ryan"s  ah qh looked in bad shape - and it was - he busted and Johan shot up in chips.

Having a bad day:
Jerome Bradpiece, who played badly (I paraphrase) today, losing his chips in two dodgy hands.  Firstly, he called a Jan Sjavik raise (there are lots of those) in the big blind with  8c 5d ("I wasn"t having that any more") and seeing a flop:
ah jd 8s.  Check-check.
Turn:  6h  Jerome checked again and got another check behind.
River:  8h  Jerome bet out 2k, and Jan Sjavik quickly raised another 4k.  Jerome thought it through carefully - he didn"t have a house; why check behind twice...run into backdoor flush draw...?  "Having put him on the hand I call anyway," and sure enough he was facing  kh qh.

So he"d dropped to 7k, and it was announced that his table was about to be broken.  An aggressive player raised to 1,200 on the last hand, called by Jan Sjavik.  Jerome decided that now was the perfect time to make the squeeze with K-9, and while the first guy passed, Sjavik called with A-K and that was that.  I like the fact that he makes no excuses about his play - you"d be surprised how many people have never told me a story where they"re the villain or the donkey, or where their superlative ability hasn"t run into the brick wall of either someone else"s inability to pass a hand or lucky lucky outdraw.  Refreshing.

On rollercoaster ride - Mike Tse

He started today on 36k, which he managed to turn into over 50k without showing a hand. He somehow drifted back under the 50k mark, until a new player was moved to his table. He three-bet the new player with pocket Tens and the guy folded, thus donating about 18k to the Tse stack. He"s now on around 60k, and looks a little manic.

Also inhabiting the cash tables and is therefore OUT is Frenchman Thomas Fougeron.

Um, is this Steph Boyd? If so, he"s on maybe 28k. He"s also sharing a table with moustache hero Dave Finney, Paul Testud, and a gent (also below) who is probably our new chip leader with an absolutely monstrous stack. Apparently the monstrous stack was acquired all in with 7-8o on a 9- tc- jc flop against an  ac kc that never hit.

Hell for Heller:

Adam Heller, having had a stack to contend with for most of this tourney, has just removed about half of his remaining chips in a couple of hands just now.  First off, a short stack min raised under the gun (blinds 400/800 ante 50), and Heller on the button made it 5k.  Back to Shortstack Matey who shoved, call from Heller, who showed  ac 9d to Matey"s  ah kc.
Flop:  jc qc 9h.  The table gently sucks its breath in in a disapproving manner.
Turn:  ad
River:  qs  And Matey doubles through after all.

Then.. chip leader Norinder calls Heller"s preflop raise to 2,500 in the big blind.
Flop:  ac ah :2h:  check...Heller checks too.
Turn:  7h Norinder checks again, Heller bets 3k....call
River:  qs  Check a third time - Heller bets 6,000 (over a third of his remaining chips)
There is a great mutual staredown at this time, and eventually Norinder makes the call, while Adam Heller taps the table, shows a bluffing  6s 9s and lets his opponent"s  6c 6d take in the pot.

Down to 100 players and they are all being converged in the one upstairs Poker Pit.  Sadly the break order for tables from here on in seems to be exactly that - starting at the rail (our only point of contact) and moving in.  One table still nicely visible has both Praz Bansi and Karl Mahrenholz on it now - the former on 45,000 and the latter around 33,000.

Mickey Wernick, according to Jon Raab, is "on life support...no cards all day, been pushed off a couple of times.  Plus there was a big hand Jacks vs. Fours which he lost 15k on."

Rumit is on around 30k.

Caught Pete Linton as they were streaming out of the Poker Pit - he said he"d peaked for the day on 27,000 by doing things like limp-re-raising with J-6 etc. but it all went wrong on the last hand before the dinner break.  He picked up  ac qc, and Mike Tse raised for the third time on the trot preflop.  Pete raised to 9k, but then found a big stack to his left re-raising to 25k, committing both players, pretty much, to a hand involving their whole stacks.  Mike thought for ages before passing (he said it was Queens) and so Pete got out of the way too.  The re-raiser showed a lone King, which probably put him in horrible shape in any case.  Back to a short stack for him, although he"s getting to the point where the money is almost visible - I heard they were paying 49 places.

Is Marcel Luske in....

Nope, sorry, I"m guessing not from his presence a couple of hours ago in the restaurant.

And we, obviously, have now returned from our own cowalicious restaurant excursion. We ate Brazilian steak. Tomorrow we may go for Uruguayan steak. Or Argentinian steak. Don"t know yet.

But forgetting steak for a moment, we"re legging it back up the stairs to get some more stories and whatnot.

After a full circuit of the room (pictures to follow) it has been ascertained that one very excellent to watch table (featuring Praz, Karl, the Camel and chip leader Micke Narinder) is right next to the rail allowing viewing IF you can get past the four-deep crowds.

Those guys chips:

Narinder -- 220,000
Keith Hawkins -- 75,000
Praz Bansi -- 58,000
Karl Mahrenholz -- 50,400

Keith just took down a pot after raising to 4k preflop and receiving one button caller.  His 6k bet on the  ac 5d 8h flop was enough to increase his stack a little ways.

Pete Linton is OUT - having nursed around 16k for a while, he picked a bad time to re-raise all in with  ts th - after an under the gun raiser to 6k turned out to have  kc kd... "I want to go home," he admitted, sharing the sentiment of many a near-but-not-quite knockout.  Play, as usual, took off after the dinner break, with the many stacks under 20k gambling to get back up to average.  Unfortunately, we could only see the results of most of these stabs at busting or gloriousness - people standing up and either sitting back down or doing the Slow Walk.  Two tables have broken in quick succession, and there are just 70 players remaining.

They"re down to 68 and there is a rumour that they"re playing down to 60 today, but as with most things here, it is as yet unsubstantiated.

I believe though that Jen may have spied some kind of payout information at last. Cross your fingers now...

Blinds are 700/1400 with a 200 ante. Average is 63,880.

There is a sort of balcony, officially attached to the restaurant, from which it was possible this afternoon to view a couple of the tables at the side of the pit. This balcony has now, however, been filled with small tables occupied by dining couples. They don"t seem to appreciate me interrupting their romantic tete-a-tetes leaning over them with a camera. Nevertheless, I took a photo of Rumit acquired that way. He shouted over his chipcount too, which the dining couple found most distasteful. He"s on 40k.

No one wearing a suit upstairs by the pit which is now seething with cash game players as well as the remnants of the tournament will give me any kind of hard copy of the prize payouts.  They are really busy - this place seems always really busy - and I can"t find our media liaison anywhere.  The only information I have gleaned is that the total prize pool is €2,140,000 making top prize €620,400.  I know that tomorrow they will start flashing the payouts at the bottom of the plasma displays, so it"s going to be good old fashioned stare at screen, try to remember as many numbers as possible, write them down, repeat.  Apologies.

Finally, after the elimination-fest that most of today became, the action has slowed.  It"s not like they"re all playing tight, though - there are still raises, re-raises and god forbid steals going on, but each player has taken the seriousness of the couple-of-tables-away bubble to mean that they should take their time in creating any action, or even folding.  It"s not exactly stalling, just very considered play.  Two to go before the end of play tonight...

One man clearly not afraid to steal is Keith Hawkins. He raised from the button, and after some consideration the below gent, unnamed but I heard him chatting to his friend in Hebrew if that narrows it down any for you, folds. Camel shows 5-6 offsuit. "You bluff me, I bluff you," he says. There follows some arguing over the nature of the earlier Israeli bluff, which I must admit I don"t really follow because I"m trying to line the guy"s head up with the lamp.

Well, while watching slightly depleted ex-chip leader Narinder re-raise The Camel off an 8k raise preflop, someone else went out, and with 61st place Matey gone, play has stopped for the day.  People flooded in with plastic baggies, railers crowded the entrance ways and our last vantage point was gone.  We shall be as excited to learn of the chip positions and in fact full list of names of survivors tomorrow as anyone else.

Play restarts at 2pm here (1pm UK time) and we"ll be back to glue one of us in position at the front of the rail.

Also still in is our friend Lady. Really, I"m amazed, because I"ve seen her play I think three hands over the past two days, and each time she"s lost about half her stack. She must be doubling up at at least the same rate, though. She"s currently sharing a table with Rumit, whose viewable-from-the-restaurant table has now morphed into a cash game.
