No pass for Greenie this winter Rob, so it"s solo once more.  Should give me more time to the blog as it was a struggle to update daily in South Africa.

Yes, you are correct Phil, the first two references will be documented for Brisbane and Adelaide, with perhaps the bonus of Hong Kong airport if I can locate one.

This could be an epic publication  ;D

After finally discovering which hotels in Brisbane and Adelaide that I"ll be staying in I decided to investigate the evening entertainment options, in particular Casinos.  One from a point of view of actually playing a game of poker on my travels and secondly to find something to keep me occupied and out of trouble in the evenings, casinos and out of trouble don"t really go I know  :)

Found an option in Brisbane for a casino, although it doesn"t seem to specialise in any poker games or tournaments, just the standard casino table games, hey ho Blackjack for the win I guess in Brisbane.

Doing a similar search for a location in Adelaide comes up trumps ! It seems Texas Hold Em is fairly popular in Adelaide, and I find the Adelaide Casino, similar looking website to the G Casinos in the UK and it has a poker section.  Daily tournaments running, a freezeout on a Wednesday and Friday evening.  If I"m lucky and get organised in Adelaide and the Casino isn"t a big trip from the hotel I will hopefully get a couple of games of poker in.

Do a quick look up of my hotel in Brisbane, discover that the Casino is adjacent, hmmm, might actually keep me in trouble whilst I"m in Brisbane !!!  At least I won"t have far to stagger home at the end of each day  ;D

Well, the trip is finally upon me, one more day to go, a few hours at work in the morning and then the final packing of the suitcase before heading off to Heathrow Terminal 3 for my 22:05 flight to Hong Kong, connecting flight to Brisbane the next night, the one bit of the trip I"m not looking forward to is the length of journey.

The England team have found some form in the warm up games, a much more professional approach than the the last Ashes tour.  This time the Aussies seem to be in a bit of disarray and hopefully we will be able to take advantage of this if we hit the ground running.  As per the last series in England, a lot of the results may be determined by the toss and the decision taken by the Captains.

Here"s to hoping for some good calls and decisions by Captain Strauss !

Wednesday 24th November

Finally arrived in Brisbane after departing the UK late on Monday night.  Journey consisted of two flights, a ten and a half hour journey to Hong Kong on a 747.  Got a small amount of sleep, but not much as I always struggle to sleep on planes, watched a couple of movies and played a bit of blackjack to help the time past.  Flight was pretty smooth, can"t actually remember any turbulence at all.  Unfortunately was stuck in the middle section so no views of Hong Kong as we flew in, which was a shame as I was hoping to see the skyline.  Couldn"t see anything from the airport and it got dark rather quickly as well.  A pint or four were had waiting for the connection flight to Brisbane, another late one.  Plane was delayed slightly in Hong Kong, but eventually we set off for Brisbane this time on an Airbus A330.  Another smooth 8 hour flight until we started the descent into Brisbane, a couple of pockets of still air hit and it was like a rollercoaster for a couple of minutes, certainly woke everyone up  ;D

We were transferred over to the hotel by Ross, who was showing a lot of bottle in front of us with regard to the Ashes, they seem to be convincing themselves that they are still the number 1 team to beat !!

Hotel room is spacious and ideal for relaxing in, a 50 yard walk from the hotel is the Treasury Casino, quite renowned locally apparently, I will have to make a visit to check it out, although I think I"ll be struggling this evening as the lack of sleep is slowly catching up with me.

A little further past the casino is the view over to the Brisbane Southbank, looks a little familiar, not sure where they have modelled this on.  A few good bars located over there so I"m sure some evenings will be spent sampling the entertainment on offer.

Well Brisbane seems a nice place, although the smoking laws appear to be a bit draconian to say the least, they even have smoking police by all accounts, must remember to not stub a ciggie out on the ground !!

First test starts tomorrow, weather forecast is ok according to the locals, could be an interesting toss, perhaps both Captains might actually want to lose this one  :-\

Off to find a club sandwich, will provide a report on my first sample later.

Great blog...are they big on Meatball Sammiches in Australia?  Is there a Subway near your hotel?  You couldn"t try one for me could you and report back?  I"d quite like to visit Australia one day, but it really depends on how they prepare meatballs.

Well it"s 6:30am here, have had a reasonable sleep although I was awake about 5am, not a bad change over to the new hours.  The sun is out at the moment although some showers are forecast, toss could be the clincher with this one.

Off for some breakfast and to find the free transport to the Gabba.

COME ON ENGLAND !!

Brisbane Test Day One - Session 3

After a couple of blips and some solid partnership building the England fans were starting to get positive, Bell who had come of age in South Africa last winter was looking on great nick. He was continuing where he had left off due to injury in the summer.  If Cookie could slowly accumulate and support Bell as he picked and chose the right balls, we could be in for a good score and take a grip of the first day.

Then we got to the 66th over  :-\

This could be the defining moment in this Ashes series, from a fair boxing match that was probably being matched punc for punch, England suddenly and unexpectedly found themselves on the ropes as Siddle ripped through the batsmen and took the first ever hat-trick at the Gabba and I was there to see it !!

First Cook succumbed to a wider ball for the first time today, edging to Watson at first slip, then to a huge roar as he ran in beat Prior all ends up to what could be questioned as whether he was actually playing a shot, it certainly wasn"t a shot I"ve ever seen documented in the history of cricket.

As Broad stepped out to the wicket he was greated to a wall of noise, I"ve been in a few sporting venues in my life but I can honestly say the noise being generated as Siddle stood at the end of his run up was blood curdling.  The Gabba was a cauldron and it must have been difficult to comprehend what Broad was thinking as he stood there.  Siddle bowled a great hat-trick ball, straight, quick and pitched up, wrapping Broad on the foot as he tried to get his bat on it, the whole ground seemed to appeal as one, the Aussies anyway, and Aleem Dar raised his finger !!!

The ground was rocking, the Ausies were bouncing and shouting all over the place and they certainly let you know they have just taken the advantage. One of the most amazing sporting experiences I have experienced  !!

To be fair Bell did well to guide England to 260 all out, and after 5 lacklustre overs at the close England will need to pull their socks up and get back into this game.  One over has put England on the ropes, can we fight back ??

Tomorrow is another day............................

Ian Bell - very impressie

KP - Looked like he might be coing back, then messed up

Trott - Same as Kp

Cook - NEVER confident that he is gonna do well, decent enough knock, but still looks like he is struggling.

One good bowling display tore the heart out of the batting line up, hopefully one of our lads can find an early breakthrough and get us right back in it.

The Marque Hotel

The Deluxe Club Sandwich

This afternoon I tried my first Club Sandwich in Australia, the menu quoted the option as the "Deluxe Club Sandwich" and I was hopeful that what I had ordered was going to be of high quality.

After waiting a short while my order arrived at my desk and on  initial looks, it seemed to be anything other than deluxe !!

The use of only two slices of bread raised eyebrows immediately, which were also very lightly toasted, still white which was a slight let down for starters.  The sandwich contained a nice fried egg and some tasty bacon, which were the most memorable part of the sandwich.  A fundamental lack of some decent chicken or turkey seriously let this sandwich down, which also included a shade too much guacamole sauce an obvious Aussie twist added, although it didn"t really work that well as it made one slice of the bread slightly soggy.

Highlight of the order had to be the chunky chips, very tasty with a slightly spicy coating. But the chips just highlighted what was wrong with the sandwich from a quality perspective. So a slightly disappointing first sandwich to review in Australia, not a place I would recommend for a great club sandwich, but certainly somewhere that delivers an adequate one.

So my rating out of ten is a mid range one:   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The search for an improvement will continue.

FFS I"m sat here about to go to bed, just finishing the last of a glass of scotch and sweeping the crumbs from the dairy milk wrapper..... and I saw this - bloody hungry again now!!

Will update with stories and photos from the tour over the next few days.  Sorry I wasn"t able to deliver, a bit like the Aussie bowling  ;D

Adelaide was awesome, who"d have thought 3 wickets in the first 3 overs of the day.  Brilliant win and a brilliant time.
