Title: APAT Advent Calendar 2010
Post by: Chipaccrual on November 30, 2010, 11:47:48 AM
This year has flown by and it"s nearly December, so that means it"s time for another APAT advent calendar.

Every day, I"ll put up a new post, highlighting something around the APAT year that has just gone.  No planning has gone into this so far, which could make for interesting reading over the next few weeks.   ;D

If you have any threads, pictures, youtubes or stories that you think should be included, please drop me a Personal Message (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=100) and i"ll try and get them in at some point.

It"s the first of December tomorrow, so thank god for Brian Martin  ;)

And behind door number 1 is............................

A lasting memory from Season 3.  Not many people will have seen this photo.   ;)

From left to right :-

Andrew Duncan, Stuart Oliver, Will Young, Wayne Parker, Sara (Grosvenor TD), Myself, Steve Redfern, John Murray, Brendan Byrne.

Note how Des beautifully has cropped the original photo from the banner on the forum, so no one would know that the trophy had become detached from it"s base.  As for the trophy, well, that was the last we saw of it.

We understand if you ever get invited to Duffy towers for dinner, brandy"s will be drunk in the drawing room afterwards, where Des will regail you with the story of how he won that trophy.

It truly was a great weekend in Manchester, and Team APAT winning the event was a great end to the season.

We move on to season 4, and we"re just about ready to announce the team lineup for this years event.

And if you fancy your chances at matching the achievements of those above, the captain for this season, Steve Roderick, would love to hear from you.

It should be another cracking weekend, this time in Bolton, on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January 2011

Hope to see you all there.

It"s been a great year for APAT, supported by the considerable added value that Betfair Poker have added to the season.

Whether it"s been the added value seats, the free massage, drinks vouchers or one off freebie seats, Betfair Poker really have given a lot back to the APAT members.

And the giving doesn"t end.  You can still sign up to get yourself an APAT/Betfair tshirt as worn by Richard King in Coventry last weekend (Not his actual one, but one very similar)

(He"s the one in the middle  ;) )

Sign up details are here (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7190.0)

Then there is the ipad giveaway happening after Christmas.  You can qualify throughout December.

Full details here (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7394.0)

Just please remember to opt-in before you start playing, I know it sounds silly, like, who would be stupid enough to play the qualifying number of STT"s and then realise they haven"t opted in yet.  ???

Welcome to Tightyanory

One of the best things about an APAT weekend for me, is getting back to the venue on day two, and finding out what Tighty got upto once he left the venue the night before.

One thing is for sure, Rich knows how to tell a story.  Here"s a few of my favourites that were posted on the live update threads this year.

UK TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS, Manchester, January 2010

I had to leave my hotel room by 11am, and I just managed to do this despite waking up at 10.30am and thinking it was 6am such was the demands I placed on my weary body yesterday.

I had missed breakfast. Timed to conclude at 10am on a Sunday morning, the establishment clearly was not used to catering for people, such as myself, for whom before 10am on a Sunday is anathema.

I was thus faced with a dilemna. Hungry, which to be fair is not an unusual state, and with time to kill I headed for the Salford McDonalds. I am not proud of this, but my hankering for ready fare overcame any sensibilities of healthy eating.

I arrived at McDonalds, and negotiated my way into the drive through. At the first window I was met by the silhouetted figure of the server, behind a mesh grill and specially reinforced perspex. Royal Windsor and Eton, this is clearly not

I placed my order, repeating three times because the young lady could not understand my dulcet tones, and gingerly handed over my £10 note, except that my hand got stuck in the small area to pass such money, such is the protection afforded to staff in this area.

Extricating myself from my car, one handed, I yanked at my trapped hand whilst a manager came out to observe the commotion. Behind me a couple in a Ford Capri, with no fewer than four children huddled in the back, were it seemed to me trying hard not to titter. Behind them a gentleman in a Kit car was blaring out Urban music from what appeared to be bountiful speakers.

My hand was still trapped, and the manager re-emerged and poured some washing up liquid over my hand and told me to wiggle. A strange request I thought, until I realised he meant my hand

A few minutes later my hand was free. My face was bright red from both embarrassment and exertion.

I moved onto Window three. My gast was flabbered when the male youth behind the next grill and eprspex said "Your order will be two minutes, please park in Bay 2"

"Hold on my good man" I said "I have been stuck at Window One for 7 minutes 30 seconds"

"I need to park in Bay 2?"

He said something to me which may well have been a foreign language such was the strength of his accent, but a point towards Bay 2 and a grunt later, I parked up and waited

A knock on my window followed. Not a word, merely a grunt and a hand thrusting a bag of food in front of my face. I accepted the proferred food, and settled down. The mixture of Radio 4 and McDonalds offered a bewitching cultural menage, but soon I was sated. By Radio 4, not the food.

I moved onto the casino, where within a minute of settling down I was offered my first bad beat story of the day.

My hand is still hurting. My pride is hurting more, and next time I am in Manchester I intend to make it to Hotel breakfast.

APAT Welsh Championship, Swansea, March 2010

I had set off for Swansea at 7am Saturday, and by 2am on Sunday morning when I left for my hotel, I was on my last legs. I walked out of the front of Aspers and enquired of a bouncer, six foot wide and eight feet tall, as to where I might find a taxi rank?

He gestured me to the bottom of the road where I "turn left and you can"t miss it"

I looked in front of me. There stood, and swayed approximately 100 of the human detritus of a Saturday night in Swansea. Resisting the temptation to extract my camera phone and take shots of assorted young ladies who might have been wearing skirts, though I wasn"t sure, I began to wend my way to the rank. I reached the end of the road . No taxi rank in sight

"Oi, mate" said a young man worse for wear in front of me, as he thrust his hand in my direction "want a bit of my kebab?"

"No thank you" I replied

"F****ing Hell, lads, he"s bloody English!!" he cried as his mates looked in my direction

I immediately felt a shiver down my spine and had to think on my feet

"er, actually I am half Welsh" I said, meekly and rather pointlessly I added "on my mother"s side. She"s from Aberwystwyth"

The man giggled, and began to move on with his mates. Phew, I had escaped.

I reached a gaggle of people, mainly female

"Hello love, are you a taxi driver?" one young lady asked me

I looked down at my shirt with APAT badge

"No I am not" I said rather sternly

"Oh" she said "you look like a taxi driver"

There was no sign of a taxi rank. Or any taxis.

A friendly pair of policemen walked past. The question had to be asked

"Excuse me where is the taxi rank?"

"It"s closed mate, roadworks"

"Where are the cabs then?"

"Well you won"t get one now for at least an hour, too busy"

I was stuck. Too far to walk to the hotel. I was just about to go back into Aspers when I explained my predicament to a very pretty lady of an age more appropriate to my own demeanour

"Don"t worry love, why don"t you come into the club for an hour, then get a cab when it is quieter?"

I looked at the building. Emanating from it was the insistent beat of house/techno music. I looked at my new companion. I must have looked a bit hesistant

"Don"t worry, we"ll look after you" she said so, for a bargain £8, I entered the club.

Inside it was dark, dingy and loud. Strobes flashed across the floor. I didn"t like the music. Hayley, my by now having established her name, led me to a table and sat me down. All I wanted was a taxi and my bed. Neither looked likely in the immediate future. The vague promise of being on a promise was beginning to sustain me.

After a few minutes Hayley went off for a dance. I was left alone.

She returned, with friends and she said I should go and request some music

I thought to myself that they were unlikely to have either of Five Star "Rain or shine" or Duran Duran "Wild Boys" so declined.

After half an hour I made my excuses, having been on my own for twenty minutes, and left.

In bed for 5am, I slept fitfully the banging beat a backdrop to my thoughts. How Hayley slept, I do not know but in my trouser pocket this morning was a phone humber and the letter H on a piece of paper.

I leave for home as soon as the APAT event is finished.

WCOAP, Nottingham, August 2010 (Morning of Day 2)

Half my life is spent in hotels. Corporate jobbies, and I had begun to live my life like Alan Partridge in a Norwich Travelodge.

For this five day stint I decided to do something a little different. A scour of google, a look at a brochure and I decided. I was going to do a bed and breakfast, and try a few home comforts.

I spotted a place half way between Beeston and Long Eaton, a few miles to the West of Nottingham.  A working farm had a sideline of a guest house, annexed to the yard. £29 a night, and it looked nice.

I rang up, it not being on t"internet, and spoke to what I imagined was a ruddy faced farmer"s wife on the phone. Five rooms she confirmed, home cooked breakfast every morning in the farm kitchen and I booked on the spot comforted that I would be spared trouser presses, teasmades, Central Nottingham and Premier Inns.

Last night, having already dropped luggage off in the morning, I arrived at the farm at 1.30am. I squelched across the farmyard, dimly lit by a intermittently flashing outside light. I was asleep ten minutes later in a double bed the size of Uzbekhistan with nice clean white sheets and Pillows with more feathers than a Liberace tribute gig.

Sleep came quickly, until seemingly ten minutes later I was awoken by two distinct sounds. A Cockerel crowing. Then cows moo-ing. I crawled out of Uzbekhistan and looked out of the window. My room is on the ground floor and imagine my surprise, and that of the Friesian too, when we met face to face only seperated by a double glazed window. The cow"s breath frosted one side of the glass, and mine the other. The cow was not alone. She and her cohorts were leaving their pens for the day and into the fields. It was 6.15am.

Suddenly I realised my folly, because of course the farmer"s working day is long, and begins early.

I went back to bed, wide awake for ages, and made it for breakfast early.

Sitting in the kitchen, the children readying themselves for school, I settled down to my cooked breakfast.

Ruth, the farmers wife, not at all ruddy, enquired

"Cows didn"t wake you did they? They"re milked before 6am every morning then let out. Do you want to help out tomorrow, some of our guests love it?"

I didn"t want to appear rude in the face of their hospitality so merely said it would depend how long today was, because I was working late etc etc.

Now, sitting in DTD, three events ahead of me today, I am haunted by the prospect of having to milk udders tomorrow purely for politeness" sake. I am English after all. Half Welsh though. Perhaps that Welshness will allow me to grow a pair and say "No" to Udders before breakfast on a weekend.

WCOAP, Nottingham, August 2010 (Morning of Day 4)

My landlady is a very pleasant hostess, and her breakfasts are to die for.

Yesterday morning, replete with bacon and toast, she asked me a propos of nothing

"If you are getting in late, I can always bring you some breakfast to your room tomorrow?"

I jumped at the chance of breakfast in bed, told her what I would like, we agreed on 9am and last night, returning to my room slightly earlier than the night before at 2.15am, I fell into slumber knowing that I would awake to the wafting of breakfast at the end of the bed.

Fast forward nearly seven hours and I must be in a deep sleep. I wake with a start at a banging noise on my door

"Richard, Richard!"

I am disorientated, you know that happens sometimes when you are sleeping in an unfamiliar place

I composed myself

"Yes?" I answered at the door

"I have your breakfast, shall I come in?"

This was slighty difficult as I was sleeping without my customary Harrods Pyjamas, monogrammed with APAT's insignia.

I stuttered

"C-C-C-an you leave it outside please, I will pick it up when I am dressed?"

"OK then" came the cheery reply of the lady, no doubt already up for five hours.

Now at this point dear reader, I no doubt should have got dressed. Trousers at least. Maybe a T-Shirt.

But no. No indeed. FML.

I decided in my half awake state to wrap a large bathroom towel around my midriff, and open the door to pick up the breakfast.

I opened the door. The Breakfast tray was to the side of the door, just out of reach.

Now at this point dear reader, I no doubt should have gone and got my room key.

But No. No indeed. FML.

I decided to hold the door open with one foot, whilst reaching down to pick up the tray, dressed only in a towel.

I am of course built for gymnastics, indeed  i represented my country in the Parallel Bars in the Moscow Olympics, so a breakfast tray held no fears to me.

I reached out, one foot in the air holding the door open, both hands outstretched. I unbalanced, and found myslef on all fours in the guest house corridor, staring at a pot of tea, wearing a towel..but with the door slammed shut behind me.

It is quite difficult to retain one"s sang froid when on all fours in a hotel corridor wearing nothing but a towel.

Now then, what to do?

Eat Breakfast and think about it later? The thought crossed my mind.

Knock on another room and get them to ring the Farmhouse kitchen? No, the thought did not cross my mind

I decided to tiptoe to the guest house entrance and Peek Out. After all, no doubt I could attract the attention of a passing chicken or Cow. FML.

I opened the guest house door. I let out a plaintive "Hello...." the word losing itself on the breeze of an Autumnal August morning.

I tried again, at which point the 4-5 year old son looked up from his play on what appeared to be a ride-on tractor

"Excuse me" I proferred politely "Can you get your mum?"

He walked towards me, and I feared the worst

My fears were confirmed when he came up to me, looked at my bare top half and said

"Why?"

I explained, and he ran off giggling.

A couple of minutes later Ruth returned smiling. She brushed passed me with the efficiency of a hotelier of some distinction used the master key to open my door and, a cruel touch this I thought, held the door open for me to walk past back into my room. As I sat down on my bed again, she carried the tray in, set it down on the table and wandered out.

I was sure I caught the sotto voce tell tale "Tut" as she did so

Breakfast was very nice indeed.

From (http://www.worcesterindoorplay.co.uk/images/little-acorn-large.gif) grow (http://whatdidyoubringme.homestead.com/files/Tshirts/Plant/images_lg/MightyOaksX3E.jpg)

APAT is becoming the breeding ground for big scale poker success.

Two seasons ago, this lady

was sat at an APAT final table in Cardiff (getting a poker lesson or two from Tim Magnus)

This year, she won the EPT San Remo for a cool 1.25m euros and has since signed a sponsorship deal with Pokerstars.

Not a bad effort, and just shows what is possible. She even made it onto GMTV, something Tim is still trying to achieve.  ;)

Well played Liv Boeree.

Sat waiting for the clock to strike midnight, to see if window 5 was added to the calender......As per usual you didn"t disappoint.   16 seconds past midnight and there it is.

Great job Leigh.

And behind door number 6 is............................

This means nothing to me,  Ohhh Venice

That"s right, APAT headed for the European Mainland again this year.  And first stop was Vienna, well it was for 8 intrepid APATers, Tighty and Myself.  Paul McGuinness spent the weekend thinking he was in Venice.   ;D

It wasn"t the best of poker trips for the UK players.

One by one they would head to the bar. We got to make some new friends along the way.....

But not until we"d crowned Christoph Kreindl as APAT Central European Champion. (And we"ll see him again in Bolton this January)

Of course, for those that were fortunate enough to make the trip, there is one significant memory, that will stay with us for a very long time to come.

Whenever a particular The Eagles track comes on the radio, I can"t help but sing along with the Concorde Card Casino lyrics.   ;D

Every Kinfishi has their day, well would you Adam n Eve it, the cash grinding nit only went and won the DTD Deepstack event in August this year.

Many hands make light work, and in APAT's case, that statement is so true.  APAT seems to have it"s own circle of life when it comes to members willing to offer support, and as one persons available time diminishes due to other life commitments, so another is always willing to step into the breach.

So many people to say thank you to this year, so in no particular order.

But more about James and Maylis in a later door, me thinks.  ;)

And of course, there"s all the folks that once they have got knocked out of the event, been over to the update area, told their badbeat story, had either Tighty or Myself nod sympathetically and been offered a caring "Oh well, that"s poker", who will then roll up their sleeves and either grab a pad and pen, a camera, or scarely sometimes even the microphone and help the update for those unfortunate enough to be at home.

And here is where I am bound to forget some people, so sorry in advance if I do.

Dafydd
James
Phil
Martyn
Amanda
Sian
Dawn
Tikay, Simon Trumper, Rob Yong

Not a bad lineup of support for the main acts, and without them APAT wouldn"t be anything like as popular and successful.

Cheers Guys.  :)

Oh, i didn"t realise we were supposed to help out?!

I thought the process was....

Get knocked out.
Go and speak to you. "So, what happened was....", "and then the flop was..." "and then he re-raised", "i must be ahead" ...... 20 minutes pass ......... "so i 4-bet", "he shoves, i snap him off and the river comes a feckin J and he hits his miracle 32 outer!. Donk!"
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Tell fellow BCPC members "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Tell random APAT player "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go back to Leigh "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer. Tell bartender "So, what happened was...."
Listen to Phils advice and decide to play in the "deepstack" Sit And Go for just £20, plus £10 reg fee.
Get given 500 chips and told the blind levels start at 25/50 and last 48 seconds.
Lose 500 chips.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, get beer bought for you by James Edwards after reminding him how he knocked you out of your first ever APAT when he hit his 2 outer on the river. "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into wife .. "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into wife again .. "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, get beer bought for you by random guy who you let go in front of you in the queue. Tell him about what happened was ...
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into wife again. Tell her how much you love her.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into Brian Yates. Tell him how much you love him. "So, what happened was...."
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into Tony Trippier and tell him that yes, you did know about his bronze in the stud.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer. Tell bartender you love her.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Bump into some random bloke you met as some APAT last year. Tell him how much you love him. "So, what happened was...."
Bump into wife again. Get told you"re leaving.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, drop beer.
Go to the bar, buy beer, lose beer.
Fall into wife.
Wake up feeling somewhat worse for wear wondering where you are.
Bump into wife again. Get told she"s leaving. Tell her how much you love her.
Head back to casino.

Go to the bar, buy beer, drink beer...........................................................

I do apologise Leigh. It seems i haven"t been doing my duty as an APAT member.

Next time i"ll bring a pen.

And behind door number 10 is............................

It"s been a pretty decent year for the Welsh.  A number of individual performances along the way, but the one that sticks out happened across two days in August at the WCOAP in Nottingham.

They say that a picture tells a thousand words.  Well in this one, Dylan is clearly thinking "I can"t believe we"ve picked Dan as our spokesperson.  The least he can do is put his shades on the right way round"

Meanwhile, Rudders is already on the phone discussing the significant media exposure that always comes with any APAT champions.  No messing, he goes right for the big guns.

Yes, the best 48p you"ll spend in North Wales, allegedly.

However, Rudders rather foolishly left the final negotiation of the copy celebrating the teams success in the capable hands of triumphant skipper, Paul McGuinness.

Paul is a proper APAT man, and from day one has been all about Team Cymru.  He took great pride in being asked to captain the side, and diligently scoured the whole of Wales for the right blend of poker player that would work and support as a team to take down the title.

There was no room for individuals in this team.  They would face the troubled times together, back each other to the bitter end, and most importantly when that trophy was secure, they would bask in the sunshine of success together.

So, anyway, back to the Daily Post, dated Thursday 2nd September 2010, flick through the first few pages with the headline news, then past the article about someone selling a guitar for charity. Hey, John Williams Conservatories are doing 25% off and pay nothing until 2011, 0% APR.  Not a bad deal.

Still flicking through, past the Private Annnouncements, quite a few Jones and Williams deaths.  There"s a story about knife crime, with a picture of Judge Niclas Parry, who carries a passing resemblance to our own Brian Yates.

You eventually get to page 15, and there above an advert for Lidl supermarket offering you a Bishops Finger for £1 is the story celebrating the teams triumph.

Yes, that"s right, "Poker face takes title - Paul Leads Wales To World Success", you have read that correctly.

Let this be a lesson for you all, when you swim with the media sharks like the North Wales Daily Post, they will spin your story any which way they choose to sell more copies.

You have to feel for Dan, Rudders and Dylan.  They get a mention in the small print, but when it comes to grabbing the headlines, they were only after one face.  ;)

Well done lads.  You"ve done APAT proud, you"ve done your country proud, and most importantly, you did yourselves proud.

NEVER HAPPENED it was just a very very very bad dream
oh and that has to be the gayest national anthem off all time

What"s the betting Paul has got that blown up in a gold frame so it"s the first thing you see as you walk in his house?

Alongside his framed picture of Judy Garland and his collection of the worlds greatest musicals on CD.

Sorry Paul.   ;)

Is this the youngest WCOAP winner ever ?

Can"t be bothered to check, and even if he isn"t by age, he is by name, as it"s Ben Young.

Although there was also this chap

Colin Young, who won the 6max side event at the WCOAP.

So Ben in the youngest Young to win at the WCOAP.  I haven"t checked that either, but going by the photos above, I think it"s a safe bet, and Colin would look more shocked than above it if were proved different.

And no, they are not related.  Ben is from Wales (I sense a theme here), and Colin is from, well he"s not from Wales anyway.

I feel that the research is going well with this one.

Ben picked up the title of World Amateur Champion, along with the trophy, gold medal, thousands in cash, GUKPT Grand Final seat and significant media exposure.  Although I understand he was gutted not to make the North Wales Daily Post, but that"s what happens when you come from Cardiff.

Ben got high praise from the watching masses that weekend, and rumour has it, he might be planning on taking this poker lark a bit more seriously.

Watch this space, we may just hear a lot more about Ben Young in the future.

Many hands make light work, and in APAT's case, that statement is so true.  APAT seems to have it"s own circle of life when it comes to members willing to offer support, and as one persons available time diminishes due to other life commitments, so another is always willing to step into the breach.

So many people to say thank you to this year, so in no particular order.

and not forgetting our resident travel and seat exchange mod

Paul, who worringly has his name on his shirt, so he doesn"t forget it, yet we trust him to give us travel tips and suggest the best hotels to stay in for each venue.  ???

Then there"s these guys

I would just like to personally thank all of the guys mentioned above and Leigh and Tighty for all that they do for APAT.

I think APAT has changed the face of the game for recreational players in the UK since launch in 2006 and it simply would not exist without the many hours that these guys put in.

Awesome job team, huge respect to each of you.

Regards,

Des.

You will probably know this player as "THE PREST1GE" on Betfair

He is Warren Jones, and he has just finished top of the APAT Online Rankings for Season 4.

It was nailbiting stuff though.

Going into the final two events, Tony Trippier led the rankings with 55 points.  Tony finished 9th in the PLO event, meaning 56 points was the target to beat.

Meanwhile in the NLHE Main Event, we were heading towards the points at 18th place, with Frank Bailie (53pts), Warren Jones (47pts), Steve Bayliff (40pts) and Charles Mason (38pts) still in with a shout.

By the time Frank Bailie exited in 13th place, the new target to beat was 59 points, meaning only Warren could beat him by finishing in 6th place or higher.

As the final table started, Warren had 50k, with blinds at 1250/2500.  Not much room for error, but players kept dropping out, and although his stack was now down to 30k, there were only 7 players left.

Warren was then allin twice.  First time with pocket kings, but no callers.  The second time with AQ and was up against AK only to hit a queen third card out and another fourth card out.

It wasn"t long after that we lost Ant Williams in 7th place, and that meant the Warren Jones has hit the top of the online rankings for the season.

Warren wins a seat at the Champion of Chamipions event being held in Bolton in January, where someone will walk away with a £20k sponsorship package courtesy of Betfair Poker.

You forgot .....

Fall over surinder Sunar and tell him you love him after first swearing "no way is that Surinder"

Invite yourself to mine for curry - Again!

Mmmmmm   When will I learn?  "Never  trust a poker player".

It was my first ever APAT event.  DTD, Worlds - Heads up.  I was as nervous as hell.   I sat at the table, and after feeling total panic coz there appeared to be no amounts on the chips.  I turned one over and realized with great relief that I was saved from looking a fool, in having to ask the dealer what the amounts were.

I played the first round, totally shocking myself, beating my opponent and making it through to the second round.

As I made my way to the table for the next round, I was introduced to my new opponent.

"I have never played live before"  he tells me.   New to the game and being an innocent young lady, I believed him.  I relaxed a little, and knew if I remembered everything my two great teachers had taught me, I would be fine.

I never made the third round......But my opponent did, and went on to win a bronze medal.

Thanks Warren.  It was a pleasure to play against you.  When you got third place, I didn"t feel so bad, the fact that I had gone out to you.

I did learn one very important lesson from you.....I will NEVER trust a poker player.

Good Luck in Bolton.

Tomorrow"s adent calendar (Hopefully available from midnight tonight) will have a guest editor.

The last time I let this happen, Des was in charge, and this got posted.

Could it be a revenge mission ?

Or am I going to get stitched up like normal ?

Or could it be neither of the above ?

Whatever happens, it"s over to the Right Honorable Mr Tighty of Tightend, for one day, and one day only (Unless it"s really good, which it probably will be, and then he can fill a few more days for me until the 24th  ;) )

and behind Door Number 14..............

It is the Winter of 1980 and a precocious three year old is sitting down to tea at the Kitchen table. Beside him is an abacus and a pen and notepad and a small computer is on the floor alongside.

A plate of Fish fingers, chips and beans is laid in front of him, and the toddler glances at it, dismissively. For now, his mother says nothing, watching her son writing notes, pushing balls in the abacus from one side to another whilst copying out a games programme onto his ZX spectrum with his right foot.

Eventually, the mother"s patience runs out and the familiar refrain is heard

"Leigh. Tea, now. You can do that after your bath"

"Awww Mum, I"m just working out the scoring system for the nursery school British Bulldog Team Challenge tomorrow. We selected the teams at first break today and I was appointed captain of the Blue team. With my random pick I chose Ben, and now I have to work out who chooses which path from the school block to the Monkey bars so as to maxmimise our points haul compared to the other four teams. I also need you to sew our team name badges onto our kit to make us look like a cohesive unit"

Leigh's long suffering mother looked at him. Outwardly a normal child, it was only at the age of 18 months when Leigh insisted that she adopted a different system for stacking the family ironing so as to minimise transfer time from board to pile that she thought she could have a problem on her hands.

Fast forward to 2010 and Leigh has not changed. His car boot is a veritable treasure chest of APAT paraphenalia. In he walks to the casino and via several trips the following emerge

1x Laptop

Laptop has six spreadsheets for the weekend"s event, photo software and sixteen email accounts active for last minute player communications.

3x boxes of APAT store merchandise. Sorted as to size, colour and item.

1x Printer. Bought at the WCOAP this August because DTD could not print out his spreadsheets fast enough

1x Pack of Haribo. He knows it will only last seventeen minutes once he puts it down next to me, but its part of his routine anyway.

From two hours before the start of an APAT competition until after it ends on a Sunday the Chipaccrual whirlwind is in operation. Updating, commentating, spread-sheeting, photographing, printing, sorting and liasing, all with incredible good humour and relentless organisation. He even puts up with the grumpy old git sat in updating corner alongside him, when Des shows up that is.

Then when he gets home, there is the APAT day job to do...the Online games to sort and the Satellites to arrange. There is Betfair to speak to, and Betfair to speak to again, only this time more slowly! All this too done with patience and considerable sang froid.

As measures of his immense contribution to the APAT forum alone, over 6,200 posts and 140 days spent online on here tell a tale.

Leigh is the nuts and bolts of APAT. His efficiency and dedication allows for what you, the players, see to appear seamless and professional. He also has a wicked sense of humour. As evidenced by deciding to leave 63 medals and cases at home for several months before reminding Des that he had them to send to members, at which point George Michael Trippier was more combustible than the asbestos in the roof of an old Grosvenor casino.

Leigh of course "played" the first three seasons of APAT, reaching the top 15 of National championships three times. He has appeared in forum challenges and national team events. All this despite being Welsh.

When Leigh got knocked out of APAT events, which was frequently, he was the main volunteer amongst the APAT army of contributors to a live update over a weekend and this extended to organising Online events as well as forum moderation through seasons 2 and 3.

When Season 4 was taking shape, with its scope and complexity leading to greater demands in managing APAT coinciding with calls on Des" time and with myself frequently having four or five live events in various stages of planning, Leigh was the natural choice to adopt a more formal role within APAT.

An accountant by profession (now there is a surprise), in his spare time Leigh and his partner Jen look after twenty seven rescue labradors at their home which consists of half of Hampshire.

The poor labradors may have been rescued, but I doubt they regard it as that, as each morning before work Leigh lines them up in age order for rollcall having already measured their precise food servings the night before and listed them on a spreadsheet.

Leigh's other hobbies include Manchester United, a natural choice as he has never been to Manchester except for APAT, F1, the Foo Fighters and staying up too late. No wonder he occasionally looks tired

As we near the end of Season four, and begin to think Season Five, APAT, Des, myself and all players and members owe Leigh, APAT stalwart to end all stalwarts, a debt of gratitude.

And behind door number 15 is............................

Remember this bloke ?

No, I don"t mean Des, I mean Paul Pitchford.  In 2009 he appeared out of nowhere and won the player of the WCOAP in Nottingham and collected a very smart APAT polo shirt for his effort.

Very well played that man.  Not bad for a first time APAT effort, but let"s be honest, consistency is another thing altogether, and everyone gets a bit of luck, especially when it"s their first APAT events.  We won"t be likely to hear much about this guy for a while I"d errrrrr, ahhhh, okay, so I may have got this slightly wrong.

Roll on a year and Paul is back in Nottingham at the WCOAP, and he"s really moved up in the world.  This time he"s with Tikay.  And for the second year running Paul Pitchford is player of the WCOAP.

And this time he"s won a Betfair bag.  Boy, no expense spared there then.  What"s that you say ?   The bag contains a seat in the WSOPE event #3 worth over £1k courtesy of APAT's sponsors Betfair Poker.  Who"d have thought it ?

What great added value, and I"m sure Paul will really enjoy a trip to the capital of England.  He can mingle with some of the superstars of the game, maybe get a few autographs, and when he gets knocked out, he can do a bit of sightseeing.  It"ll be a lovely experience for him and a great few days away.

Afterall, he"s only an amateur poker player.  Up against all those pro"s, he"s likely to fade away quiet quickly.

Doesn"t he look smart on day one in his nice APAT shirt ?

Sorry, what"s that ?    This was day three.    You are kidding me ?

And he won £40k for finishing fourth.  If only he"d written a blog about this for everyone to read.

Ahhhh, okay, I get it now.  Paul"s WSOPE Blog (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7004.0)

In last year"s advent calendar, A star was born (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=4816.msg83818#msg83818), this year that star is heading for legend status, can"t see how he is going to top that for next year ?

What, really ?    He"s only been picked for the APAT Team (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7404.msg125677#msg125677) in the UK Team Championship in Bolton this January.  So there is greatness above cashing in your first WSOPE event for £40k.  ;)

Perhaps the best is yet to come.

Yeah that was a helluva railing thread!!

For those who don"t know, Paul wanted to play the HeadsUp tourney at WCOAP, and as I had secured a place in the team champs (won"t dwell on that!) I had a HU and Stud seat for sale. For obvious reasons, I said I would only sell them as a package - the Stud seats weren"t in the same demand as the HU seats.  So, Paul took both seats off me, and played the Stud tourney "for a laugh, having never played Stud before". He ended up doing rather well in the Stud tourney, which contributed to the points total that won him the POTY title.

So Paul - £40k.... very nice. Now, about my cut..... :D

Well played mate!!

Steph "The Mole" Boyd

Our first ever APAT Pro League champion, and a thoroughly deserving one at that.  It did go down to the last game in Coventry though where James Eccles was still in with a shout of grabbing the £20k sponsorship package courtesy of Betfair Poker, but it wasn"t to be.

Steph won two of the seven legs of the tour and was consistent throughout.

Ahhhh, Tallinn.  What a weekend.  I couldn"t make it myself, but agents Tightend and Sweeney headed off to Estonia to sample what the locals had to offer.

The live update (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=6535.0) was, errr, live and updated.

Oh, but boy did it deliver.

APAT's very own, Three Musketeers.

Except this won"t be a case of one for all, and all for one.

With one leg of this season"s tour remaining, these three players are left fighting it out for top spot in this seasons rankings.

1   Steven Roderick      46
2   Darren Shallis      42
3   Jack Prime      32

And where better for this season to reach it"s climax, than the Costa Brava.  Luckily we have quite a rail making the trip in early January, and it"s not too late to join them.

Best of luck to all those heading to Spain, but most of all to Steve, Darren, and Jack, may the best Welshman win (Sorry Jack  ;) )

APAT tv

It"s caused a lot of discussion this year, but whichever way you look at it, there"s a whole new dimension created for those sat at home railing an APAT event.

When you are relying on technology, it can be totally hit and miss.  Wifi signals, or 3G signals, have all meant that we have had an intermittent service at times, but when it"s been working, it does the trick.

Not that we would know.  As it"s all streamed live, so we have to take the word of those at home watching.  And if you weren"t at home watching then you missed out on lots of chat, such as :-

Tighty naming every possible Everton player that Carl Lybert should win the Welsh event on behalf of.

Des and myself discussing whether the cupping of testicles at a final table is a sign of a strong hand.

The guess what chocolate bar Maylis had bought in Aberdeen.

The Tikay interview at DTD, and the Rob Yong one for that matter.  Great insights.

The lovefest that was James Edwards and Martyn Sharp, commentating on the final table in Coventry.

Oh, and any Tighty singing that you may have heard along the way.

Much thanks must go to the technical wizardy of James Roberts throughout the season, he even managed it one handed in Luton.  Top Man.

And as for Maylis, she"s really become part of the team, and has befriended most of you on Facebook by now.   ;)

What happens with APAT tv for next season, well, we"ll have to wait and see.

As long as it doesn"t effect the forum updates (due to lack of staff) I think the live stream is a great asset.

When Ian (Haworthbantam) was winning his medals (sorry...Had to get it in there) the kids were at home and thought it was fantastic that they could rail him.

Great job guys.

Yeah great that people actually get to see what"s happening when you"re away and they"re back home. Think my girlfriend - for the first time ever - actually had a bit of interest in the game thanks to my appearance and Maylis" commentary on the feature table at Coventry.

James and Maylis seem to be doing a wonderful job by all accounts so more of the same for season 5 would be the biz  8)

Funny that.

I thought about making sure I spelt Martyn right, and then go and type a different surname.

I"m putting that down to a serious case of man flu affecting my ability to type, or think straight for that matter.

Maylis"s Diary-includes private photos taken on my phone from the weekend (http://www.apat.com/forum/index.php?topic=7418.0) - The most cleverly named blog title to make you read it to only find out that the photos are mostly of APAT players in the bar afterwards.

Betfair Poker are currently running some festive added value tournaments, and although it"s late for an APAT Advent Calendar Competition, we"re going to add some value to tonight"s tournament.

The tourney is the "One shopping day left Turbo" at 8pm.  It"s a $10+$1 NLHE Turbo event with 20 x $50+$4 tourney tickets added to the prizepool.

On top of that, we"ll add some APAT last longer value.  Whichever APAT member lasts longest in the tourney will win an APAT hoodie.  Whichever APAT member lasts longest without winning any of the Betfair added ticekts will get an APAT T-Shirt.

All you need to do is register for the tournament, and post on here to claim your prize if you think your finishing position is a winner (Prizes definitely won"t make it to you for Christmas  ;) )

Mod Edit..snipped really long and unnecessary quote yeah totally agree  ;D Cheers

To be honest Leigh I"m sure mine was a nervous smile as I surveyed my potential table opponents and discovered Alan McBride, Rupinder Bedi and James Edwards to my right and Gary Peniket a few seats to my left.  I might also add, that i can"t fail to tip my hat to James, who was involved in the first 2 pots of Saturday with good cards, the second hand running his AK into my AA on a K high rainbow flop. He shipped a fair percentage of his starting stack within those 2 hands and still made it to the cash on Sunday, fantastic play James and very well done  8)

Top job Leigh.
