APAT European Amateur Team Championship
« on: August 02, 2008, 14:17:31 PM »
This event; the final event of Season Two, is being played at the Grosvenor Casino in Brighton, on November 1st & 2nd, 2008.

The provisional entry list features international teams from England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland and Wales.

Teams will be made up of 4 players and a playing / non playing captain.

The format of the Championship will be as follows:-

Day One - Saturday November 1st:

2.30pm - 4 x single table matches with each match featuring a player from each country.

6.30pm - 4 x single table matches with each match featuring a player from each country.

Points will be allocated as follows: 5 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 5th place in each of the 8 matches above.

10.30pm - 4 x heads up matches featuring 1 player from each country.

12.30pm - 4 x heads up matches featuring 1 player from each country.

Captains will choose which 2 of their 4 players should compete in the above heads up matches.

Points will be allocated as follows:  2 points for each heads up match win.

Total points allocated on day one will be 136 points.

Day Two - Sunday November 2nd:

2.30pm - 32 player multi table tournament featuring all players.

Points will be allocated as follows:  16 points for 1st place down to 1 point for 16th place.

Total points allocated on day two will be 136 points.

At the moment APAT is looking to charge an entry fee of £100 per player, with no registration fee.  In addition, Blue Square will add £2,000 to the prize pool, so in total there will be over £5,000 to play for and the Championship Cup and Medals for the top three teams.

The structure of individual events is to be determined.

Countries will have the ability to use team strategy and APAT will finalise the specifics of this with Captains before the event commences.

Captains will be announced during August.

In a change from the original announcement, Captains will be able to pick four players of their choosing but it is anticipated that they will choose (at least) their leading compatriot from the APAT National Rankings.  APAT will provide Captains with performance based information where requested.

Hi Des

The original announcement was that this would be an invitational for the leading 16 APAT ranked players from 4 countries (Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland).

This has now changed to 4 players + 1 captain from 8 countries, but these players do NOT have to be top APAT ranked.

Can you please explain the change in thought for this. Are you really going to get 4 players from France, Italy, Hungary and Germany travelling over to the UK for this?
In my opinion, i think that these countries will end up being played by UK APAT members who have some tenuous connection with these countries.
I looked upon this event as being a reward for doing well in Season 2 of APAT, with the teams being made up of the top ranked players from their country, with maybe the captain having a wildcard pick as well (similar to the Ryder Cup).

Totally agree with the newportlad... was really hoping i could do well in the remaining tournies to get a chance to represent my country... now no matter how well I do I may not get the chance...
