Hi Jack, GL with the blog. I look forward to enjoying this one as much as the others. Just a wee comment on hands above. Very similar starting hands but in my opinion the situations are very different due to the blinds and stacks.

The first one with 7/7 I believe (even without hindsight) you make the right lay down. I base this on the fact that you haven"t invested too much and been significantly re-raised by someone with a bigger stack who can potentially bust you with too many hands that are a/already dominating you or b/a coin flip

The second hand with 8/8 I"m calling. My reasoning here is that you"ve already raised the pot 25% of the guys stack and when he shoves there"s now 29k in the middle (please correct me if I"m wrong on that) and just under 15k for you to call and without risk of busting. In addition his range, with 10BB"s left and almost 9.2k to steal in the middle, could be pretty wide and i believe you"re probably looking at a coin flip. You"re getting 2/1 odds and If he has a bigger pair then you can still get lucky to bust him, but essentially I think the coin flip is more of a possibility.

Survival is more important than accumulation late in a satellite tournament. The payout is the same for however many players earn seats at the end of the satellite. So SAT strategy means we are no longer playing with a win in mind, but now its the goal of being one of several or whatever amount of seats that are awarded, our goal is to make the payout structure. SAT theory states because of pay structure it means we won"t make many of the moves we might make late in a regular tourney, because they are too risky for us to be able to make them profitably. You simply can"t play them like a normal tournament, have a look through the strat forum, someone posted a good article on satellite strategy awhile back..

edit - i better add that the approach changes according to how big of a buy in the SAT is or if its a winner takes all, how many seats [low buy in, hardly any seats] etc etc,,,,

In a normal tourney, I"m probably stacking off in both hands. (I"m not the greatest folder though ???)

In a satty, raise folding is fine for both hands, maybe fold pre in hand 2 (you are in EP and have a top 3 stack and are too easy a target for the shorter stacks to 3 bet you off marginal hands)

wd on binking a seat for the deepstack

Thanks for the input on the hands fellas.

I think I still fold the 77 in a regular tourney but probs ship with the 88.

Trivial question.

When recording satellite entries, do you record the successful sat pay out as £0 or (e.g.) £330? Then when the object tourney is played record the buy-in as £330 or £0 respectively?

Is the answer irrelevant? Are both options valid? If not, why not?

For recording purposes it would be either £0 for both or £330 for both I reckon.

surely if you record the payout as £0 from the satellite then the buyin for the target tourney is £0 as well?

FWIW, I record £330 for both

Of course, they would be the same. D"oh! Just got mixed-up - honest!

£330 for both it is then.

My resolve to take the poker more seriously isn"t going very well atm. I"m still playing 2 tournies without really concentrating whilst watching tv, reading forums and chatting on line!

The current fad for new diary threads isn"t helping  ::)

I"m spending more time than ever catching up on blonde.

I think I"m going to have to restrict myself to one tourney at a time to give myself more chance.

It doesn"t help that I"ve only only had about 17hours sleep since 1pm on New Year"s Day! Ashes"ll soon be over though :)

The people it"s been my good fortune to meet playing poker

An occasional series.

Phil "PHIL_TC" Tompkinson

To be honest, I don"t know Phil ever so well. We"ve shared the odd table and the odd pint. But there"s some folk that, as soon as you meet them, you know they"re good uns. Phil comes under this category. Yes, he dyes his hair. Yes, he wears sunglasses. And yes, he has an iPod. Luckily he also has a friendly demeanour and a ready smile and is good company. Looking forward to buying him a pint in Spain. Top man.

EDIT: I didn"t remember to buy Phil a pint :( it"ll have to be this weekend in Bolton)
